Fantastic.......2007-08-20
Let's start with a warning - this is not a book for beginners. To appreciate it (apart from the "coffee table" usage someone else mentioned), you have to know a lot about CSS, HTML and have decent knowledge of JavaScript and DOM. But once you're there and have a few web design projects behind you, you'll really appreciate all the nuggets in this book. The ideas presented in it, as well as the explanations (in a juicy voice that was obviously not bowdlerized by editorial policies that so many other publishers have) are simply priceless. I also highly appreciated the approach of not going into meaningless details; the text is full of URLs containing background information, additional articles, design guidelines, CSS tricks etc.
To all the authors & the publisher: Congratulations !!! This is one of the Web design books I've seen ... why can't I give you 6 start?
nice, but there is better.......2007-07-26
This book arrived the day after I returned home to NJ after the "An Event Apart" conference in Boston.
Compared to the large volume of texts that have come out before it, this was a little bit of a disappointment.
If you're new to using CSS, then maybe it will be more helpful to you, but if you already own/read CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions, Bulletproof Web Design: Improving flexibility and protecting against worst-case scenarios with XHTML and CSS, DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model, and the like... I wouldn't bother with this one.
Great Book!.......2007-07-26
This is one of the best web design problem solving books I've read to date. This is a great buy and keep book! I loved it and I'm sure you will too.
Excellent Web Standards reference.......2007-07-20
I spend my time flipping from designer to developer in the assignments for my classes and projects I pick up on the side. I am facing a semester full of Asp.net so I wanted to use the time between Summer classes and the fall semester to shore up a couple of things on the design. So I have been spending the nights sharpening my flash skills and improving my markup with web standards in mind.
I had been interested in picking up Web Standards Creativity: Innovations in Web Design with XHTML, CSS, Dom Scripting since it was released and I came upon the opportunity to obtain in exchange for reviewing the book. This is not a bad deal if you spend as much money on books as I do.
Most of the books I have picked up regarding web standards have been very basic and contain very vague examples. It seemed like I would always end up a little short of my learning goals at the end of these books. Friends of Ed assembled some of the premier web designers in the world know for not only their creativity, but their belief in web standards as well. Ok let's dive in and see if the book was worth the wait.
The book is divided into ten chapters and each author has his own chapter. In that chapter, the individual authors bring something different to the web standards table and provide their own little learning experience. The book was laid out a little differently than I thought it would be providing colorful pages which made the reading experience more enjoyable and was welcome break from the black & white of most technical books.
What I liked about the book
I thought every one of the authors brought something the table that I could use in my own projects down the road. The coverage of CSS in this book is top notch and anyone looking to learn a few new tricks will enjoy the first three chapters. Chapter four Jeff Croft makes light of the fact the .png file format is a viable choice for web graphics. His commentary really explained the advantages and limitations of the different image formats. Another highlight of the book would be the DOM scripting techniques presented in the third section and I felt all three chapters provided useful techniques. I found that the text size section of Evan Marcotte's chapter very useful and I cannot wait to use this technique. I found many of the tips given by the authors simplified things that I perceived as too difficult to pull off and after discovering the ease of use I cannot wait to experiment on my own projects. I thought the color of pages in the book made for a more interesting read. I also enjoyed Rob Weychert's chapter on Typography because it refreshed my knowledge of font types and techniques that I have failed to use recently.
What I didn't like about the book
I wish it would have been a bit longer as it was only 288 pages. The second part of the book focuses on bringing print techniques to the web maybe it is because I have limited experience with designing print publications and I wish these chapters would have be a little more detailed. I would like to have seen a couple of more chapters on DOM scripting, but Friends of Ed has another book that really dives into this area.
Conclusion
I really enjoyed reading this book and working through the examples. This is one of the better technical books I have read in awhile the presentation is clean and concise. I took many useful tips away from this book and I can't wait to experiment with them. I came away from this book hungry for more examples from the author's which lends itself to the quality of the content. I hope Friends of Ed will come out with a sequel and expand open the topics presented even further.

Highly inspiring.......2007-07-12
The authors of this book have really done a wonderful job. The cases they discuss are as original as they are useful for real-world application.
It was refreshing to read a book about web standards that started not completely at the bottom. The authors will require some knowledge of HTML and CSS prior to reading this book, and that's good, since there already are so many beginner books available out there.
What struck me mostly was the inspiration I got from various examples in the book. It made me want to test the code and experiment further with the explained principles.
I can recommend this book to anyone who is already familiar with web standards and would like to have an entertaining read to broaden their thoughts on certain design problems.

Standard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900.......2007-04-11
This publication is essential for anyone buying, selling or evaluating coins.
Been reading it for 49 years.......2007-03-12
This is the most comprehensive coin catalogue and when put together with Catalogue of World Coins 1901 - 2006, it really gives you an accurate picture and value report of what you have in your collection or are thinking about adding to it.
Standard Catalog of World Coins:1801-1900.......2007-01-10
Material is horribly dated. Publication date apparently 2004, using 2001-2003 price date. Effectively useless.
You MUST show date of publication in description of item.
Not likely to buy again.
Content Missing (contained in previous editions)........2007-01-10
Readers will find missing the following (there is probably more):-
Philippines silver 1880-1885
Large amounts of Indonesian &/or Neth. E. Indies.
Egyptian 5 Ghirsh AH1293.
Getting Off to a Good Start and More.......2006-03-22
This is a publication of note. Highly informative for the beginner or seasoned collector there is a certain lure for these magnificent looking coins and abundant information on them. I will have to admit that I was certainly intrigued by this publication and spent several hours rummaging through the information contain herein. I have collected coins on and off for years and this was a good place to start and jump back in to that rewarding and enriching hobby.

Customer Reviews:
Nearly useless price guidance.......2007-07-04
The new edition of this catalogue is an extremely disappointing effort in terms of keeping up to date with price developments. A majority of the countries covered in this update have not been reviewed at all, resulting in a very misleading guide to collectors. If you have the previous edition, there is little incentive for you to buy this new edition. Editors should really put much much more effort in updating prices, or simply stop printing updates of the catalogue altogether. Changing the cover picture does not justify a new edition.
A must for banknote collectors.......2007-04-10
An excellent catalogue. The only disturbing problem is that there are several mismatchs between pictures and descriptions. Unfortunately more frequent than in earlier issues.
The best catalog for paper money.......2007-02-21
This catalog is the most useful and professional catalog for worldwide
paper money. As a serious collector you can not be without this catalog.
Amazing guide not book.......2001-07-29
this is a very helpful and amazing book for any money collector, and I really happy with that book
A complete guide(BUT Not Attractive) , wrong picture of note.......2001-06-19
here some comments
1) spelling mistake found in the book(e.g. Sweeden)
2) paste the wrong paper note of picture (page779, 1961 issue, 10 dollars) this SHOULDN'T BE the NOTE...
my opinion of this book is: NOT PROFESSIONAL enough to handle such a silly mistake...

Book Description
The power of the Web lies in the fact that anyone and everyone can access it, and this should also extend to users with disabilities. Accessibility is about making websites accessible to those with aural, visual, or physical disabilities, or rather, constructing websites that dont exclude these people from accessing the content or services provided.
This isn't difficult to accomplish and doesn't require anything more than your normal tool set-HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, or whatever else. This book gives you all you need to know about web accessibility, whether you are a web designer or developer who wants your sites to be accessible, or a business manager who wants to learn what impact the web accessibility laws have on your websites.

- Testing against WCAG (including 2.0) and Section 508
- Retrofitting inaccessible sites where necessary
The book concludes with an in-depth analysis of accessibility law around the world. If youre concerned about the legal and moral implications of web accessibility, then this book is perfect for you. It is written by some of the world's experts on accessibility, leaving you in good hands.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding. Absolutely every web developer and website owner needs to own this........2007-07-17
This text book is of very high quality and an engaging read. Apart from the expected target audience of web developers, I will suggest that website owners and non-developers should consider getting hold of this vital textbook.
The fact that it leaves you wanting more is a compliment to its quality. Even though it is bulky, I wished it had covered certain areas in more detail.
One small criticism relates to the javascript examples. The discussion of events refers to techniques that are questionable in terms of robustness and re-usability, issues that, to be fair, the author does point out. [Background; search for "addEvent considered harmful" in your favorite search engine.] Yet no definitive solution is given, and the reader is left hanging. More serious is the very poor quality javascript code sample given for the cssjs() utility function, which is poorly designed (needs to be repackaged, should be a class), is inefficient, and is fragile as it contains (at least) two immediately apparent critical bugs.
But such small gripes should on no account not put you off buying this text. The overall verdict, "Outstanding."
Anyway, the numerous authors are to be congratulated. Indeed, given the size of the field and the rapid pace of developments, a second "part II - advanced" volume would be a very good idea indeed.
A Strong Book.......2007-03-23
If you are serious about accessibility (and you should be), this book will not dissapoint. The authors know what they are talking about, and do a good job and presenting both the facts and their opinions in a clear relavent way.
The only reasons I do not give it 5 stars is many items within the book are redundant (I think due to the great number of authors (11!), and perhaps they wanted the book to serve as a reference also), and because the presentation is generally dry. Good information, but not coffee-table reading.
Still in all, as a web developer I would highly reccomend this book to any other developer weather you just want a little understanding of accessibility, or a big dose.
Awesome book.......2007-01-24
This an awesome book. This book is the to have for all web developers.
Web Accessibility - It's all in one place!.......2006-12-23
Web Accessibility: Web Standards and Regulatory Compliance is the
perfect reference for any site development team. Everything you've
wanted to know about Accessibility and the Web is here in a single text.
Each member of the team will find necessary information and practical
solutions in one or more of the thorough discussions here. For the
designer/developer who works alone, Web Accessibility: Web Standards and
Regulatory Compliance is the all-in-one reference with the most
up-to-date information and techniques. Thanks to the clear organization,
two tables of contents, and index, all information is easy to find as
well.
For those of us who like background and theory, the book contains lively
discussions of accessibility standards, of the intent of the standards,
and suggestions for using the standards. For me, though, the heart of
the text is in the practical discussions and how-to guides in order to
improve accessibility of every common web technology -- from PDF to
Flash, from javascript to data forms. In addition, we finds clear
descriptions of the law and web accessibility. Importantly, these
discussions are international in scope.
The collective experience of the authors of this text is impressive.
These are the experts to whom we've turned to assist us with accessible
design and development for years. In this text, we have a collection of
the most knowledgeable voices on the subject of accessibility, who speak from a real-world
perspective. They share freely their best techniques, so that we can
create the "best possible experience for the greatest number of
visitors."
For me, Web Accessibility: Web Standards and Regularory Compliance is a
must-have.
Must-Have Book for Accessible Technology .......2006-12-05
Web Accessibility: Web Standards and Regulatory Compliance, written by eleven experts and released in July of 2006 by friends of Ed, is one of very few books about web accessibility. It is also the best. The writers include luminaries and pioneers in accessibility - Jim Thatcher, Cynthia Waddell; and technical experts - Christian Heilmann and Andrew Kirkpatrick, to name a few.
The book is an overview of accessible best practices in web technology, and the legal landscape it inhabits. It was compiled with several target audiences in mind.
Certainly, it is intended for developers - newcomers as well as veterans. This is the group that most needs to understand the technology, and unfortunately, seems to "get it" the least.
Another audience is the managers and administrators; that group that should be most adverse to risk and whose responsibility is to keep their government and corporate employers out of the courts and headlines (like those that have embarrassed [Target retailer]). Covered in some detail are the ADA section 504 and section 508 requirements, and in lesser detail international laws.
The technical information is very current. There is a chapter on accessible JavaScript (most would consider that term an oxymoron) even though it has only recently seen coverage in articles and blogs online. Likewise, there is good information on making Flash content accessible.
A book assembled as a compendium of contributions begs to be updated frequently. The next release, for example, could add much needed chapters on AJAX and Web 2.0, podcasting, and learning management technologies. Regardless, all practitioners of accessibility will find this book valuable.

Customer Reviews:
Getting Better, But Not There Yet.......2007-08-13
Having been a major collector of banknotes for 40+ years, I find the SCWPM series of banknote catalogs invaluable, but far from complete or accurate. This volume has improved graphics and updated pricing compared to the previous edition. The numbering system is chaotic, pictures misplaced, signature charts missing or incomplete, latest issues missing, etc. Mr. Cuhaj needs some help.
Arghans.......2007-07-19
I was very disappointed by the latest issue of the 'modern issues' catalogue. There are at least two instances of incorrect page-headings, which are confusing, and one group of notes missed out completely - which suggests carelessness in editing the book. However my main disappointment is the number of issues which were new in 2005 or the first half of 2006 which have not been included - which, for a book dated and published in 2007 just is not good enough. If Krause Publications are going to make an annual out of the modern issues catalogue, then they must make the cut-off date for the inclusion of new issues much closer to the publication date. Why could they not put in the front a prominent note saying something like 'including all new issues up to July 2006'?
I feel a bit cheated by Krause.
Keith Potter
Another poor attempt.......2007-06-28
Well yet another year passes and Krause gives us another inferior catalog. Inaccurate prices, incorrect pictures, notes two and three years old still not in the catlog. Since this is the only real catalog we can use for our hobby it has to do but i think that as hobbyists we need to let Krause know they need to take this book more serious and put a little more time, effort and professionalism into it. I know in years past I as well as many other hobbyists have sent Krause email after email with new pictures, errors in the catalog only to see the next catalog with out the changes. So it seems to me they do not take the us or our hobby very serious. It would be very nice to see another publisher get into the race and perhaps come out with the type of catalog we hobbyists deserve.
Best of the best ...........2007-06-27
This catalog is a must for all banknote collectors, even for small collectors. It contains accurate information, is very comprehensive and is easy to use.
Simply the best of the best.
if you are a collector, you must have one.......2007-05-12
This is the catalog you need to have a approximate price for your notes. It is the most serious one, and the most accepted expertise.

Good wireless programing book; ok treatment of other topics.......2001-10-06
"Wireless Internet & Mobile Business How to Program" contains a good discussion of the various elements of programming for wireless devices. The reader will come away from the programming chapters with a solid understanding of how to implement simple structures. The chapter that introduces algorithms is clear and concise; the chapter that introduces control structures is easy to understand (if somewhat odd in its ordering). The chapter that introduces Object Oriented Programming provides a clear introduction to objects. This approach, using several real-world examples, is a good way to orient the non OO-minded to the use of objects. It covers the different aspects of objects in the abstract well. However, it could use a clearer explanation of why developers should use objects instead of the regular, top-down structured programming they've (possibly just) learned. For those new to programming, this is essential.
The book is not really just a "How to Program" manual, as are some of Deitel & Deitel's other similarly named texts. (Their excellent C++ and Java books come to mind.) Some of the chapters, like the one on employment opportunities, are in danger of becoming obsolete quickly. However, overall this is a solid text with good treatment of wireless programming and other loosely related topics.
Book Description
After years of using spacer GIFs, layers of nested tables, and other improvised solutions for building your web sites, getting used to the more stringent "standards-compliant" design that is de rigueur among professionals today can be intimidating.
With standards-driven design, keeping style separate from content is not just a possibility but a reality. You no longer use HTML and XHTML as design tools, but strictly as ways to define the meaning and structure of web content. And Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are no longer just something interesting to tinker with, but a reliable method for handling all matters of presentation, from fonts and colors to page layout. When you follow the standards, both the site's design and underlying code are much cleaner. But how do you keep all those HTML and XHTML tags and CSS values straight?
Jennifer Niederst-Robbins, the author of our definitive guide on standards-compliant design, Web Design in a Nutshell, offers you the perfect little guide when you need answers immediately: HTML and XHTML Pocket Reference. This revised and updated new edition takes the top 20% of vital reference information from her Nutshell book, augments it judiciously, cross-references everything, and organizes it according to the most common needs of web developers. The result is a handy book that offers the bare essentials on web standards in a small, concise format that you can use carry anywhere for quick reference. This guide will literally fit into your back pocket.
Inside HTML and XHTML Pocket Reference, you'll find instantly accessible alphabetical listings of every element and attribute in the HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 Recommendations, as well as every property and value in Cascading Style Sheets, Level 2.1. This is an indispensable reference for any serious web designer, author, or programmer who needs a fast on-the-job resource when working with established web standards.

Easy to Use.......2007-09-05
After I figured out there structure of displaying information, this tool has become a valuable asset. Definately recommend.
No index?.......2007-03-31
What kind of a reference book doesn't have an index? Sure, the tag reference is in alphabetical order, but that only helps if you remember what the tag is. Also, I had a brain fart this morning and couldn't remember the exact syntax for a comment (I work with way too many languages)- couldn't find it. That's what a pocket reference is supposed to be for, the little things you can't remember!
DSM IV Made Easy.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent text and well illustrated. I am sure an updated edition will come out soon.
No index?.......2006-11-07
I'm a big fan of the O'Reilly Pocket Reference series, but this one was a bit disappointing. While the basic content is there, the book is less than 100 pages and seems to only be a wrapper for three tables defining the common elements, character entities, and colors. Only the first five pages attempt to provide any foundation for the tables. Missing are more general references on forms, tables, scripting or even techniques for relative/absolute addressing. Probably most surprising was the lack of an index. For a pocket reference, that seems a pretty major oversight.
Great Book!.......2006-10-01
Hi there,
This is really a great book!
I needed a reference for HTML to help me work on my "invention" which is an HTML parser...It goes to web-sites, parses each page and finds the URLs embedded inside the HTML tags.
The main part of this book, HTML Elements, which covers 70 pages, is extra-ordinarily well made. It gives you all the information those monster +500 pages do but it is only pocket-sized and easy to carry.
I will use this book so that my "invention" knows the HTML syntax; and any other HTML projects I begin.
Big thanks to Jennifer Niederst Robbins and O'Reilly Media, Inc.!
'til next time,
Charles Darakdjian
