Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.
Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

It's an OK book.......2007-10-04
Just like most of the people, I got this book from my employer (I hope it's not a sign of restructuring :)).
I'm afraid that I do a too good job of reviewing the book one would no longer need to buy it anymore. In essence, the whole book can be summarized in about 10 statements. In all fairness though, these are insightful and worth meditating on statements.
So, like I said... An OK book.
Thought Provoking.......2007-10-03
The book is an easy and quick read but the story will put thoughts in your head that you will think about for years if not a lifetime. Life brings us all challenges so this book is for all of us... That is, unless your life is perfect.
Genuinely Insulting..........2007-09-29
Genuinely insulting to the independent thinker. Yeah I know, it's been said countless times but I felt the need to reinforce that notion. If you're someone that's more comfortable being a follower and having your life and work environment structured for you then you're more likely to enjoy this book and find something meaningful in it. If you're someone that uses logic and reason to guide your decisions then don't waste your time or money on this rehashed brainwashing manual. This is a book written for unquestioning, mindless followers, not a book for leaders. But a tool that leaders would use to try and control their subordinates.
who moved my cheese.......2007-09-21
Light, but nevertheless thought provoking reading. Good for an hour or so by the fire.
Overrated.......2007-09-17
This book has been considered a classic by many and used widely in the corporate world. In my opinion, however, if you are seriously considering reinventing yourself or improving how you manage life, this book won't get you there. Change doesn't come about with a superficial one-hour read. Consider a book like "The Path of Least Resistance" by Robert Fritz. It will take more time and effort, but I think it's a seminal work in the field of human motivational theory. If you give it a chance, it might transform you.

A Combination of Motivational and Practical Advice.......2007-08-13
Much of the stress we experience comes not from the workplace but from our reactions to our workplace. Most of Carlson's little book focuses on how we need to change our attitudes in order to minimize stress. For instance, work should be seen as something that we get to do rather than something that we have to do. Enjoy life now--don't wait for retirement!
Problems should be seen as speed bumps to negotiate gracefully, not barriers to be resented. One should recognize that life is full of hassles, and that these should be handled in stride. One should lay off the ego, because constant comparison with others will only raise one's stress. Workplace meetings, instead of being stewed at as unnecessary or boring, should be seen as challenges to learn something new.
Carlson also gives some practical pointers for minimizing work-related stress. For instance, if we feel hurried in the morning, we should get up earlier to give us more time to get ready for work. Long commutes to work, instead of being hated as a waste of time, should be profitably spent listening to books on tape. To avoid the stress caused by constant phone calls, we should have a "no phone" time when we don't answer the phone. Voice mail should be used more often. To dissipate general stress, we should spend ten minutes each day doing absolutely nothing. And, since vacation trips themselves can be stressful, we should spend more of our vacations puttering around at home or visiting local events and places.
Simple Advice.......2007-05-03
Some of the "advice" is a good, although it is presented in a very simplistic way. I guess the author wanted all audiences to understand the meaning.
Some of the advice is redundant, other is good.
I purchased this for myself to if I can learn how to reduce some of the stress at work, but now we are using it in the office.
I have to say that the chapters that really pertain to you get you a bit upset. (truth hurts I guess). I found that applies to more people than just me when we started reading in the office. :-)
If you are looking for a brake-through book this is not it. If you are looking for some simple self-improvement advice as it pertains to the work environment, you may find some guidance in here. Don't read too much or expect too much from this book. Although it is somewhat helpful if you accept it for what it is.
Too Focused on an Office Enviroment.......2007-04-08
I've enjoyed the other Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Books and thought this book would be helpful in helping me to reduce some of my stress at work. I find that almost all of the suggestions assume an office type of atmosphere and aren't really well suited to my work enviroment - a high paced retail enviroment. Making use of break times is nice if you get breaks, i.e. I just found the book sort of narrowly targeted to a certain type of worker.
Great Gift for Employees & Co-Workers.......2007-01-15
I gave this book for Christmas to give to my fellow supervisors at work. Since we are having issues at work (What company is NOT), the gift was well timed and was the perfect size for timely reading. I struggle to find gifts for my employees as well so this is what they are getting for Christmas this year!
Not very deep, nor very helpful.......2006-11-24
This book would have worked much better as a wall poster or forwarded email: "150 Ways to Lighten Up at Work" or something like that. It's like a really, really dumbed-down, touchy-feely version of Baltasar Gracian's "The Art of Worldy Wisdom," and just made me realize I should re-read that book instead. (No offense meant to Gracian!)
Each chapter is skimmable in 30 seconds or less, and far too many chapters offer mediocre advice that makes you question whether the author has worked in a typical modern office in the past twenty years, instead of making you feel like you just received a fresh perspective on an old problem.
If the positive reviews for this book have left you thinking maybe it's worth a read, I strongly recommend you browse through it at a bookstore first. It's so lightly written that most people can scan it in 7-10 minutes at a store and save $12.
Books like these are what make me distrust self-help gurus and think that they're all con artists.
Book Description
This guide offers computer users who suffer from repetitive strain injury an effective program for self-care. It explains the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of RSIs and also addresses the often-overlooked root causes of RSIs. This holistic program treats the entire upper body with ergonomics, exercise, and hands-on therapy, increasing the likelihood that surgery and drugs may be avoided.

If you want to buy just one book.......2007-01-12
If you want to buy just one book on this subject, then this is the one
Excellent book on RSI.......2006-11-10
This is by far the best source of information and guidance on RSI that I've ever seen. It's the only book (along with dr. Pascarelli's books) that explains the true causes of RSI symptoms. It will help you understand what's happening to you if you have RSI, and it will help you manage your symptoms and find appropriate treatment. It's a must-have book if you live in an area or country where RSI specialists are hard to find.
Career saving.......2006-07-13
When I was managing a software development group, a programmer on the team showed up at work one day with wrist braces. Turns out typing had become agony for him. He read this book, then diligently and conscientiously followed some of the recommended practices (strength training, yoga, serious workplace ergonomic changes). The wrist braces are gone, and his career has been saved.
You can't fix anything just by reading a book. You *can* fix things when you understand the problem and have some ways to combat it. This book can give you both.
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-20
I bought this book after all the glowing reports and am happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Just improving my posture (one of the suggestions) has helped with my RSI.
Don't Want To Know Where I'd Be Without This Book.......2005-10-15
I have been putting off writing my review because I have so much to say and in the meantime my hands are not yet a hundred percent. BUT it is thanks to this book (in conjunction with THE TRIGGERPOINT THERAPY WORKBOOK, which I found later) that I am not disabled today. The doctors I went to were not only shockingly unkind but dangerously misinformed...so I feel it is my duty to pass the info. on ASAP and I will revise this review later.
It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! is the very best book out there dealing exclusively with repetitive strain injuries. What is great about this book is that it alerts you to the potential severity of the problem without terrifying you - it puts the time frame for healing easily at 6 months and possibly longer. Until I read this book, I had NO idea what was going on.
It offers charts to help you determine if you are a 1st degree, 2nd degree, or 3rd degree sufferer. It divides injuries into two basic categories: muscular and nerve. I would like to add that in my case there was also ligament injury, which was not discussed in this book. It also profiles the personality type that can become more vulnerable to this kind of an injury: perfectionist, obsessive, passionate about work.
My advice is that when it comes to books about this topic, read ABOUT them all carefully and then get all of the ones you need -even if you have to put them on a credit card, your HANDS are at stake! That being said, if you could only get two books this should definitely be one of them. Thank you so much Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis for illuminating this mysterious problem and analyzing it from a new angle.
Other Books I used and that you must look into to get a clear picture:
THE TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORKBOOK by Clair Davies. Okay, finding IT was basically a miracle, because it provided the missing piece that NONE of the other books on RSI really explore. It is the only book that helped me even more than It's not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I won't describe it here but the look inside this book feature on Amazon allows one to read the introduction. Basically, Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis got me through the first half of the healing process, and Clair Davies got me though the second half.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY by Emil Pascarelli: informative but terrifying, only read it AFTER you've read the others to better understand the dangers. But know this: braces can occasionally cause great damage, and a condition called RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Unlikely but horrific and important to be aware of so if the symptoms show up you can do something about it.
CONQUERING CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME by Sharon J. Butler: very nice exercises that seem to help a lot of people (though I was too injured by the time I found this book). Sharon Butler also has an online book dealing with DeQuervain's (a thumb injury) which was good and the only book out there specifically about this particular injury.
THE CARPAL TUNNEL HELPBOOK by Dr. Scott M. Fried: if you suspect nerve damage, this book is very encouraging about your prospects for recovery - and is the only book I found to deal exclusively with nerve issues. Also gave me the idea to just buy my own paraffin unit rather than pay for physical therapy every week.
FREE YOUR BREATH, FREE YOUR LIFE by Daniel Lewis.
LIGAMENT HEALING by William Weintraub.
FINALLY: PRISCILLA'S YOGA STRETCHES is an incredible TV program I discovered that comes on at 5:30am weekday mornings in my area on one of the PBS stations (apparently Priscilla Patrick has had exercise programs on PBS since 1980). Supposedly it is shown or can be requested all around the U.S., and it too played a critical role in helping me to heal and also maintain- better than any exercise class I've ever taken. Her videos can also be ordered (I plan to get the one called Stretch and De-Stress which targets neck, back, arms, shoulders) but I have not done so yet because with the TV show it's not really necessary.
Well, good luck and please, please, please get ALL the information you need to avert a potential disaster! Go sit in Barnes & Noble and look through these books if you're not ready to buy. But save yourself NOW. Also don't fall into despair! I was messed up for well over a year but once I had the right info I healed quite quickly! Without the work of all these amazing people I don't want to know where I'd be.

great office companion.......2007-07-15
this is not hard core yoga, but really who can do that at work anyway? this book has nice, effective yoga moves that can be done at work without changing clothes or drawing alot of attention to yourself. the book is small but hardcover, i have mine on my desk and it always grabs peoples attention. i've reached for this in stressful moments and was glad i had it. the book would make a nice gife. i also have the lovers' yoga and i really, really like that one!
Office therapy.......2007-04-12
When do you need this book ? Got buried by hundreds of unread e-mails and a project deliverable deadline closing fast.
Just one simple pose, fold yourself down, you will feel "hope". That ! Is the greatest benefit from this book.
It works for me and my co-workers, it probably can work for you as well, as long as you mind your physical limitation, don't push too much or get hurt.
Steve.......2007-01-04
Office Yoga is a wonderful book for just about anyone. If you sit at a desk, at home in front of the TV or fly I recommend this book to stretch your muscles and mind. The simple to follow techniques can be done anywhere and in a short period of time, and what a difference they make. I carry this book with me when I travel...its like having your own private yoga instructor!
Perfect for folks who spend time at their desks.......2002-09-23
Sometimes, I'll come across a little book that will
surprise you . . . such was the case with OFFICE YOGA by
Darrin Zeer . . . though only 93 pages (in a smallish 4.5 x 6
binding), it nevertheless contained many useful techniques that
make it the perfect desk accessory for busy professionals.
I also liked the accompanying illustrations by Michael
Klein . . . they made it easy to follow Zeer's advice.
Among the ideas that caught my attention were the following:
* Red Light Rejuvenation
This also works on planes and trains.
Sit back, relax, and gently roll your head in circles.
Shrug your shoulders up and down, breathing in rhythm as you do.
Become on with the traffic flow.
* Antidote for road rage
Stop-and-go traffic make you nuts? Loosen up your windpipes
and sing your favorite song. Imitate an opera singer and
come from your belly with the sound.
* E-mail meditation
While you are reading your e-mail, remember to breathe slowly
and focus your attention on your breath. Make the out-breath
two times longer than the in-breath. This will immediately calm you.
You can do Yoga at work.......2002-02-05
This book is a great light introduction to Yoga. It breaks up activities for morning, work and after work. The work activities are not to difficult, time consuming or attention getting.

Book Description
Like the first edition, the second edition of the
Encyclopedia of Stress covers nearly every conceivable aspect and ramification of stress including a wide range of related topics such as neuroimmune interactions, cytokines, enzymatic disorders, effects on the cardiovascular system, immunity and inflammation, and physical illnesses. Over the last decade, scientists have presented convincing research showing that psychological stress increases vulnerability to disease. They now understand more clearly that stress may be the thread tying together illnesses that were previously believed to be unrelated. Bone loss, increased abdominal fat, and damaged memory cells in the hippocampus have been linked to elevated cortisol levels.
Building on the success of the first edition, this completely revised work surveys the vast amount of research generated in the past five years, resulting in a substantial revision with over 30% new material and over 100 new entries. Expanded sections include Animal Studies, Anxiety and Depression, Drugs, Depression, Disasters, and Psychological and Other Therapies.
Also available online via ScienceDirect (2007) featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. For more information, pricing options and availability visit www.info.sciencedirect.com.
* Timely update on the topic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder taking into account events such as terrorism and middle east wars
* Includes expanded coverage on anxiety and depression
* Incorporates entries on the advances in our knowledge of immunology, cytokines and cell mediated immunity involved in stress responses and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Type I diabetes

Book Description
Today's workforce is experiencing job burnout in epidemic proportions. Workers at all levels, both white- and blue-collar, feel stressed out, insecure, misunderstood, undervalued, and alienated at their workplace. This original and important book debunks the common myth that when workers suffer job burnout they are solely responsible for their fatigue, anger, and don't give a damn attitude. The book clearly shows where the accountability often belongs. . . .squarely on the shoulders of the organization.
Customer Reviews:
A useful framework to address burnout........2006-11-06
"The Truth about Burnout" was written a decade ago, but its analysis and recommendations may be more valid today than they were when the book was published. The first couple of chapters are a bit tedious, but the book takes off once the authors start digging into causes of burnout and laying out ways to overcome burnout.
The authors describe the causes of burnout in terms of six mismatches between people and their jobs: "work overload, lack of control, insufficient reward, breakdown in community, absence of fairness, and conflicting values." These six mismatches provide a framework for developing interventions to address burnout and build employee engagement.
For me, the most encouraging feature of the book is the authors' suggestion that the intervention can be bottom up as well as top down. The authors provide roadmaps for both kinds of intervention.
One of the Best Books on a Pervasive Problem.......2006-02-21
Christina Maslach is well-known in psychology as the person who has championed the problem of burnout over more than two decades. For quite a time she was something of a lone voice.
Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic physical, emotional and interpersonal stressors at work, leading to exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy. In a memorable term the authors describe it as erosion of the soul.
Burnout has to be seen in the larger organizational context of people's relationship with their work: it's usually the job and the organization rather than the individual, although there are clearly differences in individuals' resilience to burnout.
There are many symptoms of burnout, including trouble sleeping, constantly worrying, feeling unappreciated or "used" at work and feeling less effective or competent. Many people find that they easily becoming angry or irritated and altogether too many start drinking or abusing other substances.
Burnout is immensly costly, not just for individuals, but also for organizations. I agree with another reviewer who lamented the paucity of data on just how costly burnout is to a company's bottom line. But judging by the number of corporations now asking epxerts to go in and help them deal with the burnout problem, I think that the message is getting through.
This is an excellent overview of the problem nearly ten years ago. If anything, the situation is becoming worse, and Maslach, and now an expanding band of other psychologists has continued to do empirical research on the problem, and have been coming up with ever more sophisticated solutions.
But even with the passage of time, this book remains highly recommended.
VERY VALIDATING.......2005-10-04
tretise on what most of us already know about bureauracracies. I've not finished reading the "what to do about it." yet, but already know my first questions when contemplating a new job will be "How many people were fired or quit in the past 6-9 months?"
A Good Read!.......2004-03-02
Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter's groundbreaking book debunks myths about burnout and holds organizations accountable for this epidemic, which has swept the work world. The authors detail how organizations can treat and prevent burnout, and take a critical look at its deep-rooted causes, including lack of engagement and conflict between employees' values and their jobs. Conversationally and with great impact, the authors support their points and suggestions. We recommend this book to executives, managers and employees. Now go home and get some rest.
A REAL CURE FOR A MODERN DAY PYCHOLOGICAL EPEDEMIC.......2003-06-02
In the Truth About Burnout Drs. Maslach and Leiter propose the first real cure for burnout and the key to releasing peak potential in the workforce.
Much of the past advice on the topic of burnout focuses on how to help people cope with burnout. These techniques are useful and come in handy, but unfortunately they do not position or fortify people to reach higher levels of performance. Simply treating the symptoms of burnout is like giving someone a medicine that provides temporary relief from external signs that they have a cold. After the medication wears off, they still have a virus raging through their body that's slowing them down. Likewise the "virus" that causes burnout is disengagement with work and no matter what temporary relief solution we provide to ease the pain, in the form of workshops on how to cope and "employee assistance programs" at the end of the day the "virus of disengagement" is still alive and well and impairing performance.
This book is for anyone manager or individual contributor who has decided to stop coping and "sugar-coating" and instead seek a real and practical solution to burnout. I highly recommend it.

Changing the way you look at work.......2001-12-29
Barbara Glantz has written a life altering book--at least a life at the workplace altering book. It is easy to read and filled with hundreds of big and little things that can change the way you spend 40 hours a week. Very positive, super ideas.
There are better books on the topic..........2001-01-07
This book is just okay. There are a lot of examples of how to improve morale at work, but the writing isn't that great, and the book isn't very well organized. There are much better books on the topic...try Managing to Have Fun by Matt Weinstein or 1001 Ways to Energize Employees by Bob Nelson.

Life-saving psychological help with diabetes challenges.......2007-07-03
With diabetes, there is no walking away from the difficulties of the illnes; it can't be laid aside when the going gets tough. This great book helps look at and deal with the everyday difficulties that are real parts of living with diabetes. Dr. Polonsky is like a friend who understands and furthermore, has good suggestions for how to handle what you feel you can't live with any more. Great tone, helpful information, comforting message. Great book!
Diabetes Burnout.......2005-08-09
EXCELLENT book for those living with diabetes. Diabetes burnout is very common. This book is full of tips, suggestions, and even tests, to help you in dealing with diabetes.
Golden empathy at first but it only goes so deep.......2004-05-14
When I first saw the chapter for "Werewolf Syndrome" I knew I had to buy this book. It makes for an interesting read at first to learn about others' experiences. Though one thing the author fails to do is provide instruction on the process of motivation, and only provides a very shallow surface, if any, of scientific insight into why people get "burned out". I would suggest going to the book store and skimming this book to feel better about yourself but don't take it home with you.
One chapter he could've included would have been MY GENERAL PHYSICIAN HAS MISDIAGNOSED ME! I was burned out on my diabetes type II management. I couldn't get my sugars down! I would go to my GP and get the advice of take these pills and eat right. Then come back in three months we'll see if you're better. After two years I finally went to an endocronologist, *slap-slap*, and he is convinced I am type I LADA diabetes. Sure enough after a couple of insulin shots I am feeling normal! (Well, normal feels like a drug after having hyperglycemia for two years.) This is my chapter for the burnout book, sc$&@ the GP and go to an endocronologist.
This book tells it like it is.......2004-01-19
When I picked up Diabetes Burnout, I was truly amazed. Dr. Polonsky understands that there are "barriers to self-care," real life problems and situations that get in the way of doing what's best for our bodies.
He knows that people make a cost/benefit analysis when it comes to self-care. If the behavior is too hard or too unpleasant, and the rewards don't seem worth it, we're not going to consistently exercise, check sugars, or eat what we're supposed to.
This problem is not just true for people with diabetes. It applies to anyone with chronic illness, or really, to anybody at all. I knew about this from living with multiple sclerosis, and I wrote about it in my book. But I didn't think anybody else had developed these ideas. I was sure Dr. Polonsky must have some kind of chronic condition himself, because he knows what it's like. But he doesn't have an illness. He's just very insightful.
I really like the humor in this book. I know some reviewers accuse him of being "cutesy" or Disneyfying diabetes, but I think being able to laugh at your situation helps, even when it's really painful. His description of "werewolf eating" and "Diabetes police" are highly evocative -- they get the point across. I don't think he's talking down to anyone -- he has compassion for people's struggles and wants us to feel better.
It's true that Diabetes Burnout does not cite its sources very well and doesn't contain a lot of specific info on diets or other self-care practices. But that's not its purpose. He is giving tools for identifying and overcoming our barriers -- social, practical, psychological or economic. This is important -- some of those barriers may have been with us for decades, and overcoming them can change not just diabetes management, but also entire lives.
He also inspires by telling stories of real people he has worked with, who have made great strides in difficult circumstances. It's entertaining, inspiring and educational (just like my book :-). What more do you want?

Excellent book for ANYONE with a chronic illness.......2003-04-17
He makes some really stellar points and has already helped me begin changing over to a more "problem solving" approach, rather than my previous approach to type 2 diabetes, which could best be termed "denial and despair".
I think that removing the 'stinger' from long-term diabetes care requires a bit of pseudo-professional detachment. Rather than seeing my diabetes as a great dramatic production, with me as the tragic heroine, his book is helping me to see it as a series of discreet problems needing solutions (where possible) and acceptance (where no solution is possible).
You'd have to know me to know what a drastic change this is from my normal way of being: 'Drama Queen' just doesn't do me justice!
Anyway, I recommend his book to ANYONE with a chronic illness, diabetic or not. In fact, one could just replace the words 'diabetes' with 'obesity' and instantly turn his book into the best thing I have EVER read on the subject of long-term, permanent weight control. His approach speaks to any long-term health struggle even though it is explicitly (and skillfully) directed at diabetes and diabetics.
Book Description
If you'd tried to control problem anger before with little success, this book offers you a new approach to try. Instead of asking you to struggle even harder with anger, this book helps you to drop the rope in your tug-of-war with anger using a new set of principles and techniques: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
You'll start by learning how to accept your angry feelings as they occur, without struggling to alter or impede them in any way. Then, using techniques based in mindfulness practice, you'll find out how to watch your anger without identifying with it. Value-identification exercises help you decide what matters most to you and then commit to short- and long-term goals that turn these values into reality. In the process, anger simply loses power over your lifein the process, you'll gain the most profound control, accomplished by simply letting go.

A great addition to psychotherapy or mindfulness meditation.......2007-02-06
This book could be a great addition to anyone's therapy or meditation practice. For some, it can be therapy in itself. Anger can be the most troubling and still elusive feeling to understand and deal with. The more you try not to have it the more you will as so many of us have seen and experienced in our lives. The authors of this book guide our minds with simply and effectively while based upon current research. Once the reader can accept anger as a normal and natural but uncomfortable feeling, then the path to living life more fully opens up. The authors teach us that observing without acting out on these feelings helps us to gain control by letting go. The exercises are challenging but essential to the reader's success in using this profound little book. There is a wealth of wisdom and compassion expressed here so gently and deeply about all of life's challenges.

Destructive anger destroys lives. Here's what to do about it........2007-01-24
With so many people acting destructively under the influence of anger these days the need for the methods and concepts outlined in this book is urgent. Of course anger is a normal human emotion that serves a real purpose. The problem is not anger itself but the dysfunctional expression of this common emotion. With the huge costs associated with the destructive expression of anger -- for the individuals involved and society as a whole -- it's hard to believe there's no mention of pathological anger in the DSM-IV, the medical establishment's bible of psychiatric diagnoses. This glaring error of omission means anger research doesn't get funded and therapists are ill-equipped to effectively treat clients presenting destructive anger. Eifert and co-authors present a wonderfully simple and effective approach based on the principles of ACT. This book should be required reading for all mental health professionals (and especially the individuals on the advisory committee for the DSM-V).
Transformational.......2006-04-13
This highly readable book is so much more than simply a resource for transforming the reader's relationship with problem anger. It contains a wealth of insight into what life is like for the vast majority of human beings, whose daily struggle with painful thoughts and feelings obscures the truth about their deepest sense of self. The good news is that people's most fundamental sense of self can eventually become successfully untangled from burdensome thoughts and feelings, to make possible a meaningful life enriched by the pursuit of freely-chosen values. With clear, accessible prose, engaging illustrations and carefully explained practical exercises, this work is infused with the dynamism and excitement of specialists who are aware of the potential for their truly original approach to transform the quality of the reader's life, whether in the realm of personal psychological experience, relationships with others, or meaningful actions. Through the experiential development of `willingness', `cognitive defusion', the identification of values, and the development of self- and other-directed forgiveness and compassion, the reader is led to the discovery of a new and invulnerable source of identity that can act with unfettered freedom and restore to the suffering individual a fundamental sense of dignity and power. I am convinced that the development of emotional intelligence should have an equal place in the school curriculum with the development of academic intelligence, and an accessible book on anger of this kind has the potential to really challenge and transform the thinking of the (many) adolescents who (understandably) spend a lot of time struggling with angry feelings and ceding to the impulse to act on them, sometimes with devastating consequences. There is a wealth of wisdom and potential to improve human experience in this book.
Don't let anger destroy your life and your relationships!.......2006-03-21
This book will help you release from the anger that's ruining your life.
Many of the patients I've worked with have let their anger destroy their lives. And then the harder they fight to control their anger, THE MORE ANGRY THEY GET! It's easy to see how this can quickly become a self-destructive cycle.
What I love about "Act on Life Not on Anger," and what my patients find so helpful, are the techniques drawn from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). If you're like my patients -- and me -- ACT will help you relax, learn to become an observer of your own mind, and help you develop skills to avoid getting hooked into every anger-provoking situation that comes along in your life. 'Cause lets face it, there's certainly a lot of them, and in the end, the only thing that any of us can really control are our own reactions to those situations.
Awesome book for people dealing with anger.......2006-03-12
Yes! I am really glad this book came out. As a clinician, I have been hoping for a good "self-help" book for my clients dealing with dysfunctional aggression and anger problems. The area of anger is so under-represented in applied psychology, and I am glad to see these authors offering a digestible self-help approach using contemporary and effective psychotherapy principles.
It's a good read. I recommend it for people dealing with anger issues in their life, and also for counselors.

Excellent!!!.......2006-06-28
This is a must-read for every working person in America. I'm going to buy it for everyone on my team and the senior management at my company (along with Julie Morgenstern's 'Never Check Email in the Morning', a more clinical approach). Joe encourages the blasphemous idea of putting ourselves and our lives first, which in turn has a positive impact on our work productivity and health. My inner dialogue has already changed dramatically at work and I'm not even done with the book. Brilliant!
Indeed!.......2005-11-20
Stressed? Spending too long in the office? Been working so hard, but can never catch up with everything? This book will really open your eyes and make you question your priorities in life. Too many people are defining their self-worth by the quantity of work time they put in at the office. This is especially a problem in Japan. People just can't say no. This book will teach you about setting sensible boundaries, work-life balance and give tips for restoring sanity to your life.
A Book for Leaders.......2005-06-10
I recently finished reading this book and hope that managers and corporate leaders read it as well. Overtime in this country is quite out of control and we as leaders have to start looking at how we treat people that work for us. Joe Robinson is a pioneer for the work/life balance movement and I agree with everything he says.

Another book that should be given to all Americans for free!.......2004-10-12
I finally found the time to read Mr. Robinson's book Work to Live. But, it isn't because I've been working. Au contraire. I quit my job in August 2002 to go answer a few questions I had about life, and to make a life change (I don't like that word career). While I've been back for 5 months as of this review, that was after 7 months straight of traveling Asia (Thailand, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Singapore, among others), and a loop around Australia, and parts of Arabia. That was a follow up to 3 months driving around the US, 6 weeks in S. America (Rio Carnaval!), and 3 weeks in China & Taiwan. I'll be on the road again soon! My change in life was fueled by personal events and only reconfirmed by Sept.11th. I may not have quit if I had more time off (Though I am vey glad I did in retrospect!). Our antiquated vacations laws are something I became consciously aware of (And mad!) when I traveled to Europe for business or when I met fellow travelers in other places.
In the eye of the storm, it is difficult to see the truth. And that is what applies to the masses of the USA in regards to work. We can't see the forest for the trees. Mr. Robinson discusses so many ideas that I have come to on my own - including the distortions of our productivity reporting. I may someday write a book that takes these ideas even further.
So many "difficulties" our country faces are ripple effects from our lack of time to see the big picture. On this fact alone, Mr. Robinson's work is in my list as one of the most important books of the present for Americans. Read it!
In the book Mr. Robinson quotes Hewitt Associates a number of times. Hewitt is the #1 benefits consultant in the US (World?). They have a reputation as a great place to work. So much so that supposedly they were no longer ranked, they were consultants to the "Best Companies to Work For" list. Funny thing is, I worked there for 9 months in 1997 as a system consultant and there was a very high employee churn rate. Of the 6 people that interviewed me (One a company veteran of almost 20 years and my mgr), all but 1 were gone within a year of my leaving. One of the reasons - they counted face time, not productivity. It was a pressure cooker for hours, it was like a cult. Maybe it has changed. I doubt it. I even have a PDF comparison chart of vacation time that Hewitt posted on their website not long ago!
I agree with almost everything Mr. Robinson is talking about. I just think he could have cut the book by 25-33% to get the same point across. The first half of the book especially just seemed to be a rehash of the same thing over and over. The 2nd half of the book is more concise.
Work to Live Works.......2004-04-29
At a time when the relentless drive of the corporate profite-imperative has swept up so many of us in a mindless labor habitrail-whose only reward seems to be more and faster-paced work-Joe Robinson has done some hard thinking and insightful research and come up with a number of unique solutions to help us break the dysfunctional employer-worker relationship that's quickly eroding life in this country. (If you're the type who blames MTV and other red herrings on societal woes, stop and think how much time away from family mothers and fathers are forced to spend these days just to hang on to their paychecks.) It's interesting to me that an author calling for basic rights in the workplace-things that labor unions supposedly won for the work force decades ago-can be viewed in some quarters as an extremist. I've read some of the reviews that equate Robinson's ideas with socialism or that accuse him of somehow being oposed to "the American way." This is knee-jerk reaction at its worst: "Robinson wants fairness so be must be socialist!" "Robinson enjoys vacations so he must hate work!" Granted, debate in this country has become dangerously polarized, Still, it's depressing to see how easily people can twist nuanced, reasoned argument into black and white polemic. I can't say I agree with everything Robinson says in this book, but I do recognize much of what he describes in the fact that I work harder than my father ever did, with far less time off, and probably a slightly lower overall quality of life. I certainly live in a smaller house and spend less time with my family than he did. Americans are fond of believing we have "the highest standard of living in the world." Guess what? We don't, even though we now work more and have less time off than even the famously workaholic Japanese. Check the health stats-this country's human machines are breaking down. And if you think our current obesity problem is simply a lack of self-control and an insidious fast-food industry, ask yourself when the last time you said, "I'd love to get in shape, jog every night after work, but I just don't have the time." That's the point. Fewer and fewer of us have the time any more to take care of our basic human needs for mental and physical and spiritual rest and improvement. Robinson doesn't want a life of vacation. He doesn't advocate the end of capitalism. He just wants us to fix the machine, so we can improve our lives, keep our economy strong before our own ignorance and insatiable demands for more, more, more break it down completely. This is an important book, a step toward a more prosperous and fulfilling United States.
