5 out of 5 stars A must for any clinician treating the Cervical Spine!.......2001-03-06

Dr. Murphy has produced the state of the art text in the conservative management of the Cervical spine. Covered are the basic sciences, most common clincal syndromes, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, this book serves Chiropractic physicians, Physiatrists, physical therapists, Osteopathic physicians, and all clinicians with a need and interest in understading conservative Cervical spine care.

Among therapeutic approaches covered are manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, the Mckenzie protocol, sensorimotor rehabilitation, cervical stabilization, exercises, psychological management, and surgical.

Clinical conditions include Cervical trauma, motor vehicle collisions, headaches, Cervical radicular and pseudoradicular syndromes, joint dysfunction, myofascial syndromes, vertigo, disequilibrium, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, and neuropsychological dysfunction.

Of all the fine information contained in this work, my favorite portions consist of the quite frequent "Clinical Pearls" interspersed thoughout each chapter. These are Dr. Murphy's own personal commentaries, practical clinical tips, and observations. They add immeasurably to the usefulness of the information in daily practice.

3 out of 5 stars Summary of intros.......2007-05-09

Well, a book serves as a summary of optical systems intro.
Formulas pop up without derivations, some chapters are just a few pages long. Published 7 years ago, some pictures are hard to see the details or even the sketch..

5 out of 5 stars Optical System Design.......2006-03-09

This is the exact book i needed. It is an excellent summary of optical principles, and their utilization in optical systems. The design examples are great for illustrating the underlying principles. The level is great for professionals (as a review), or for anyone wanting to learn the principles of optics design. I highly recommend this book, there are lots of references for deeper study. This would be an excellent textbook for a class in optical design.

5 out of 5 stars Practical words of wisdom for optics.......2000-09-28

Fischer gives me good advice that I can look up in a book. For example, I found answers about diffraction efficiency in diffractive optics, and a lens design case study about digital camera lenses. I also enjoyed the bloopers section. This information will help me do my job.

How to Read a Paper is one of the bestselling texts on evidence-based medicine, used by health care professionals and medical students worldwide. Trisha Greenhalgh 's ability to explain the basics of evidence-based medicine in an accessible and readable way means the book is an ideal introduction for all, from first year students to experienced practitioners. This is a text that explains the meaning of critical appraisal and terms such as 'numbers needed to treat', 'how to search the literature', 'evaluate the different types of papers' and 'put the conclusions to clinical use'.This third edition places more emphasis on patient perspectives, contains increased coverage of qualitative research in evidence-based medicine and also includes new information on literature sources and search mechanisms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars outstanding text.......2007-07-16

This book fills a gap in my library.
I think that it applies well to our everyday practice in internal medicine because it summarizes the knowledge without being shallow.
It is very interesting the section about statistics with some pearls that really have an influence in the way we consider the analysis of data in papers we are used to read.
A must read book!

5 out of 5 stars Paulo Carvalho.......2007-01-10

It is a concise and understandable book covering all that is important for concise critical appraisal of the literature on health and medicine. It is a very good start point for undergraduate and postgraduate students who want to get knowledge about this subject. I would like to remember you; if you can not do a critical appraisal of the paper you are reading probably you are buying cats thinking it is a rabbit...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent EBM tool !!!.......2006-11-10

If you want to learn about EBM in an objective, practical and friendly way, this book is an excellent tool.

4 out of 5 stars Good guide to EBM.......2001-07-15

Greenhalgh's book is a great read for someone familiar with medical and research terminology. As a med student, I loved it and found it very practical. It contains a great deal of material on how to evaluate the type, methodology, and statistical methods of research papers. There is no glossary, and in places the layout is hard to look at.

3 out of 5 stars Short on Substance.......2001-06-12

"How to Read a Paper" reads more like a short essay than a book. While it is well written and often full of spirited discussion, this text is somewhat short on substance and generally too simplistic. The author rarely delves beyond the surface when explaining and exporoing this field, leaving me, at least, unsatisfied. Whereas a simplistic approach to any field may be useful, the amplification of themes once introduced is where real learning occurs. This book falls short, where several other excellent texts in this field carry on. I do like the author's style, and would encourage her to scribe a more thorough text... but if I were you I'd wait for that effort before buying this one.

Book Description

As a primary text, Analyzing the Curriculum provides the backbone for a basic curriculum course at either the senior or graduate level. The book shows how the parts of a curriculum fit together and how to identify assumptions underlying curricula. In doing so, students develop the ability to determine why a curriculum proves better for some students than for others; what approaches to teaching are compatible with a particular curriculum; what difficulties a curriculum is likely to encounter during implementation; and what kinds of changes in the curriculum parents, students, and administrators are likely to demand. These are valuable skills for evaluating, selecting and adapting existing programs to suit particular situations.

4 out of 5 stars Curriculum Review from Hawaii.......2006-08-13

Mr. Posner's writing style infused both a sense of the practical, with enough theoretical background to create a readable textbook. As I traversed through the chapters, I slowly began to ccomprehend the true complexity of writing and interpreting curriculum. And, once I completed his book, I felt as though I had learned an entirely new way of viewing curriculum, not as a static document, but rather, as an active voice, and constantly evolving essential component of the professional educator's toolbox.
Many Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Best Primer on Curriculum Available.......2003-09-13

After you get over sticker shock on the price of this book, buy it if you are in need of a basic understanding of how curriculum has been organized and developed in American education. No other publication is comparable to it for its succinct overview of the curriculum process and those who have most profoundly shaped it. However, it does not provide in-depth commentary on the movers and shakers in this field. Likewise, those seeking a detailed history of curriculum development are advised to look elsewhere. I used this book in a curriculum course I taught and students found it quite accessible.

4 out of 5 stars A good start to understanding curriculum changes, and fights.......1999-12-10

Posner's field is curriculum development, and he has written extensively about how teachers, administrators, supervisors, and ultimately the public thinks about curriculum and curriculum reform. In this book, Analyzing the Curriculum, he presents tools to understand the conflicts within education and education reform, by underlining the implicit assumptions in all forms of curriculum reform. These assumptions include (1) how learners learn, (2) how teachers teach, (3) the locus of reform (university-based, collegially based in the school); (4) the political contexts of reform. He provides several detailed examples of curriculum analysis, ranging from Jerome Bruner's Man: A Course of Study and Jerrold Zacharias' Physical Science Study Committee (both university-based reform curricula) to the "whole language" movement. In each case he is fair to the merits and demerits of the curriculum in question.

This is the kind of book you can imagine teacher education colleges use. It has a steep price and apparently is not discounted.

"What is evaluation-specific logic and methodology? This book answers that question in a way that is persuasive, accessible, and understandable. It presents a set of principles and procedures to guide the task of blending descriptive data with relevant values to draw explicitly evaluative conclusions. The book makes a significant contribution to positioning evaluation as a unique and special field of inquiry and judgment."
—Michael Quinn Patton, Union Institute and University

“Amidst the wash of methods books available to evaluators, Davidson’s book provides powerful techniques for asking and answering the important foundational questions in any program evaluation.”
—Doug Leigh, Pepperdine University

“This is a very well written book that offers a unique perspective on long-practiced evaluation techniques and presents several new, potentially very useful, techniques that return “valuation” to the evaluation process.”
—Greg Roberts, University of Texas, Austin

Evaluation theorists for years have advised evaluators to “take into account” all relevant values as part of an evaluation. But especially for the relatively new evaluator (even one who is knowledgeable and experienced in research methodology), there is not a lot of guidance about how this is done. Evaluation Methodology Basics: The Nuts and Bolts of Sound Evaluation provides a step-by-step guide for doing a real evaluation. It focuses on the main kinds of “big picture” questions that evaluators usually need to answer, and how the nature of such questions is linked to evaluation methodology choices. Jane Davidson explains how to combine a mix of qualitative and quantitative data with “relevant values” (such as needs) to draw explicitly evaluative conclusions.

Many students and evaluators find it difficult to visualize what evaluation logic and methodology “look like” in practice. To address this, Davidson presents readers with useful rubrics and flowcharts that may be used during each stage of the evaluation. Many of the concepts presented in the chapters are illustrated with specific examples from a range of disciplines. Exercises and “pop quiz” questions help reinforce the key points covered in each chapter, provide homework assignments for those teaching an evaluation course, and allow learners to develop slices of an evaluation plan as they work their way through the text.

Evaluation Methodology Basics is an ideal text for students of evaluation and students in programs that have evaluation course requirements, such as education, health, sociology, psychology, and many others throughout the social sciences. It will also be essential reading for practitioners who find themselves thrown into evaluation roles without the benefit of specialized evaluation training.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Important Book.......2006-01-10

Jane Davidson's work finally makes possible the creation of the 'Evaluative Organization'. We've been told for years that the highest performing companies learn and adapt to changes in their environment or customer needs. But no one until now has given us the 'nuts and bolts' regarding how to become such an organization.

Davidson offers exceptional insights and step by step guides for implementing these techniques. She begins by clarifying the different theories of evaluation in plain English. But more importantly, she lays out in startling detail how one goes about executing these theories to address the most basic but crucial questions confronting any business: 1) What should we be doing and 2) How well are we doing it? One of the most important books published in the last five years.

    1 out of 5 stars Weak Content.......2003-08-06

Unlike other reviews, I am disappointed with this book which I bought based on the hype of other reviewers! ... And the writing style is cheesy, spouting-off some loosely defined quality terms in attempt to add some technical merit to subject matter. Having read the book (forced myself to stay the course), I can honestly say I took-away nothing of value.

    Skip the book. ...

        Book Description

Evaluation Basics is the perfect tool for individuals wishing to build or enhance practical training evaluation skills from frontline trainers and designers of training to subject matter experts who occasionally function as a trainer. The four carefully constructed chapters on each of Kirkpatrick's classic four levels of evaluation offer you a clear path to success. Plus, you will find two invaluable chapters on how biases creep into all levels of evaluation and a chapter on how to communicate evaluation results effectively. Practical examples, worksheets, checklists, tips, and notes are included throughout the book.
