Book Description
Descriptive and analytical, the text is designed to offer undergraduate students a balanced and up-to-date overview of who the police are and what they do, problems related to policing, and the many reforms and innovations that have been attempted in police work. Divided into four parts, The Police in America begins with a compelling analysis of the foundation of law enforcement, including the underlying purpose of police in society, the history of American police, as well as the contemporary law enforcement industry. It goes on to cover everything from the critical role of the beat cop and the fundamental problems in policing to the career path of police officers and a level-by-level overview of police organizations. Using timely articles and excerpts, the author takes readers beyond the headlines and statistics, to present a comprehensive and contemporary overview of what it means to be a police officer.

Customer Reviews:
Good Purchase-137 Score.......2007-09-13
I used the Professional Responsibility Law in a Flash Cards along with some other study aids and my score on the MPRE was 137!out of 150. This product is a very good investment. While there are many cards to go through, the cards provide a comprehensive review especially for someone like me who did not take a professional responsibility course while in law school.
Exactly what you need to know.......2007-03-19
I used these cards because I was in the middle of taking Professional Responsibility and wanted to cover the things we hadn't gotten to before taking the MPRE. I started reading the cards 3 days before the test and probably spent 10-15 hours going through them.
After reading a few cards I realized that they were also useful in refreshing the things I had already learned.
I basically read all of the cards and pulled out ones that were new to me or that I wanted to review more. Then on the day of the test I went through the cards I had pulled out.
The information on the cards is very clearly expressed and easy to understand. Most importantly the sample questions seem to be in the same format and approach as the MPRE questions.
While some may find that this set is way too much information, it's easy enough to skip over sections or cards you already know or are comfortable with.
My only (minor) complaint is that some of the party and attorney names are extremely corny and tend to distract from the actual question. But if you are prepared to roll your eyes at "Donald Chump" references, these cards are really useful.
OK, but overkill.......2007-03-09
The MPRE doesn't take this much studying. There are like a million cards in this set. They are helpful, but I didn't have the time to get through them all before I had to take the test. If you are the type that needs to overprepare for everything, then these may be your solution. If you think that ethics isn't too tough and you just need something to refresh your memory before the exam, get something else.
I Passed with these cards!.......2007-01-10
These cards were a good review! Got a 91%.
Great prep for the MPRE.......2003-12-11
I scored 126 using this and the Strategies book. I read all the cards twice over a 4 week period and used the sample questions in the book as practice. I did not attend an American law school or take a course on professional responsibility at any time before taking the exam. I found the book good as an introduction to the style of the examination but the cards really cover all you need to pass in style.

Customer Reviews:
dont rely on this book for MPRE.......2006-11-07
This book is a great overview to professional responsibility and very interesting but if you rely on it to take the MPRE you will fail. only write this for people out there like me who are taking a second Bar and MPRE after moving to another state, years after completing law school, and looking for MPRE study materials online. There arent ANY MPRE TEST QUESTIONS IN HERE - you have to do old tests, tons of them, to pass.
Saved me!.......2006-11-06
This Examples & Explanations supplement saved me! My current textbook was literally just crap and I just wasn't sure what I was supposed to be getting out the readings. But reading this book through, it made it so much clearer. I delayed getting this book, because the review below me mentioned that portions were out of date. It is not completely true, however. Yes, there are some sections where the Rules are misnumbered (due to the 2003 amendments), but the author corrects it by telling you what the new Rule number is. I was very careful when reading this chapter because of the warning of the other reviewer, but I have yet to find anything incorrect with the information. Yes, maybe the author could have taken the time to just change the numbers of the rules instead of adding footnotes, but the book does the job anyway. I highly recommend it.
Warning! Portions out of Date.......2005-12-08
I am generally quite a fan of the Examples and Explanations series and this is generally true of PR. The book provides a good overview of the various topics, including a integration of appropriate concepts from the Federal Rules, common law, the Model Rules and the Model Code. In terms of overall concept-based teaching, the book does a fine job.
However, the book is out of date. Though it carries a 2004 copyright date, it omits some serious changes to the Model Rules in 2003, notably changes to Rule 1.6 (see, e.g. page 164 of the book if you bought it). In the introduction the author notes changes made in 2003--which might lead the reader to believe such changes were included in the text of the book, though that does not appear to have happened. No errata is offered on the publisher's website (listed in the book as www.aspenpublishers.com), nor on the author's law school website. Such errors often make me question the basis of the rest of the book.
Furthermore, for those using the book primarily to help understand the Model Rules, there is no index or table indicating where specifc rules are discussed. Yes, the index contains a topical listing, but a rule-by-rule lising would be very helpful for this topic (the BarBri PR supplement, for example, contains such a list). So if you know, for example, that you need help undertanding Rule 4.1, there is no way to find those pages in the Examples and Explanations book.
Hopefully the author or publisher will take note of these issues and correct them in an upcoming version or include a note about needed changes.
Great Prep for the MPRE!.......2005-10-22
I took the MPRE in NY (where the minimum passing score is 85) without having taken a course in Professional Responsibility either through law school or one of the bar-prep companies. I read this book once, took a practice examination available at the MPRE website, and scored 108. As with most of the Aspen E&E series books, this is a great introduction to an area of the law that you have to know. It is easy to read, and works well for MPRE preparation.
Great.......2004-10-31
This is an excellent supplement for professional responsibility. An excellent summary of the ABA Rules. The examples were also very helpful in preparing for the final examination.

QBQ! by John G. Miller is a motivational primer aimed at purging the "blame, complaining, and procrastination" from the workplace. Miller believes that one of the hallmarks of today's business culture is a lack of personal accountability; he prescribes the cure in this series of short stories and personal observations drawn from his years of experience running his organizational development firm. His main point is that positive change begins with individuals changing themselves: "Instead of asking, 'When will others walk their talk?' let's walk our talk first." The result is choppy (39 chapters in 115 pages), and at times Miller's advice boils down to truism and cliché. Nevertheless, managers whose workplaces demand remedial, straightforward advice should find a useful tool here. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
Have you ever heard questions like these?
"Why do we have to go through all this change?", "Why don't they communicate better?"
"When is someone going to train me?", "Who dropped the ball?"
"When is that department going to do its job right?", "When will someone share the vision?"
"Why is this happening to me?", "When will we get more tools and better systems?"
If so, QBQ! is the book for you and your organziation.
In today's business culture, the lack of personal accountability is a problem that has resulted in an epidemic of blame, complaining, and procrastination. No organization -or individual -can achieve its goals, compete in the marketplace, fulfill its vision, or develop people and teams without personal accountability. The solution is an entirely new approach - characterized by new thinking and behaviors - where we no longer give lip service to teamwork, but ask, "What can I do to contribute?" and "How can I make a difference?" John G. Miller helps us make this happen. This new, hard-hitting book from the author of Personal Accountability shows us all how to become more effective and successful. Using succinct, light-hearted stories and easy-to-read chapters, Miller gives us a practical method for putting personal accountability into daily action, which can bring astonishing results: Problems get solved, internal barriers come down, service improves, teamwork grows, and people adapt to change more quickly.
In QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, John G. Miller presents a winning handbook you'll want to keep close by for situations requiring personal accountability. It's a terrific resource for anyone seeking to learn, grow, and change. Using this tool, each of us can add tremendous value to our organizations and our lives by eliminating blame, complaining, and procrastination.
Download Description
"Who Moved My Cheese? showed readers how to adapt to change. Fish! helped raise flagging morale. Execution guided readers to overcome the inability to get things done. QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, already a phenomenon in its self-published edition, addresses the most important issue in business and society today: personal accountability. The lack of personal accountability has resulted in an epidemic of blame, complaining, and procrastination. No organization-or individual-can achieve goals, compete in the marketplace, fulfill a vision, or develop people and teams without personal accountability. The solution involves an entirely new approach. We can no longer ask, ""Who dropped the ball?"" ""Why can't they do their work properly?"" or ""Why do we have to go through all these changes?"" Instead, every individual has to ask the question behind the question: ""How can I improve this situation?"" ""What can I contribute?"" or ""How can I make a difference?"" Succinct, insightful, and practical, QBQ! The Question Behind the Question provides a method for putting personal accountability into daily action, which can bring astonishing results: problems get solved, barriers come down, service improves, teamwork grows, and people adapt to change. "
Customer Reviews:
It should be required reading.......2007-09-05
The book is thin and it is a simple read. My 6th grade daughter would understand every concept in the book. While this would all generally make for a low rating, I instead give it the highest rating. Why? Because although it does not present many original ideas, the vast population of American at least, do not follow the QBQ. If it takes a book that can be read in an hour and that can be understood by someone who reads at a 6th grade level for people to start taking responsibility for their actions and thier lives, then I am all for it.
This is not to say that the only people who will benefit from this book are the young and irresponsible. Many of the points, while not rocket science, were new ways to look at old ideas and as the book says "repetition is the motor of learning."
Personal accountability is fine in theory, but more should be said about what to do when others do not.......2007-08-22
Personal accountability is fine in theory, but enormously difficult in practice. This is because it will only work if the overwhelming majority of people practice it. It is a fact of life that it takes only a few people engaging in selfish behavior to slow down the progress of everyone else. If you hold yourself accountable for what is done and those you work with do not, then the group, including those that are unproductive, will collectively get the credit.
I am not saying that you should avoid holding yourself accountable for what you do; just that one must be reasonable about doing it. You must keep your expectations to a manageable level and understand that there might be times when only you will know what you have accomplished.
Personal accountability of course starts with the actions of each and every individual and from that perspective this is a good book. Miller discusses what questions or statements should be said rather than what is actually being said. By using the singular pronoun I in "What can I do better?" rather than "What do I get out of it?" each person can take an enormous step towards success and personal achievement. However, as has already been stated, the actions of others may render your achievements down to a much lesser height than they could have been. Miller largely ignores this segment of reality, which lowers the value as you ramble down your lane of the rat race.
Outstanding!.......2007-08-14
In a word, OUTSTANDING! This book is an inspiration and a guide for me every day. I share it with my students in EVERY class. It is a quick read and full of simple insight.
Buy this book!
Motivational.......2007-07-27
I think every business owner should require their staff to read this book. "what happened to personal accountability", this is the main theme of this book. Amen!!!!! Our generations view things so differently, however I think we can all agree on the information presented in this book. This is another required read for all of my new staff.
Nice quick and concise read for personal accountability.......2007-07-10
I had the pleasure of hearing Mr Miller speak to my organization and felt his message in personal accountability spoke volumes about how to make small changes create a large impact.
Mr Miller speaks eloquently about his topic and is obviously passionate about the role QBQ takes for everyone, be they a leader, parent or any human being. The book is an easy read and the concept is not a stretch to understand, follows similarly to "Who Moved My Cheese" or the One Minute Manager series. This is the type of concept that asks you to think about what is the right thing to do, and more importantly, complete it. The procrastination concept is powerful and impactful, again, very simple, however a concept all need to follow and practice...practice being the root of all habits.
Mr. Miller has one example of a cashier at Home Depot that lowered the rating from 5 to 4 stars; this example is too far fetched and the litigious results that potentially could arise from other customers feeling slighted is too over the top. I understand what Mr. Miller is presenting, and why he purposely ignores the repercussions of such an act, this example only degrades the message he is presenting.
I look very forward to reading "Flipping the Switch" and putting these concepts into action, along with re-reading this series annually to ensure I continue to practice personal accountability.

It is useless book and just waste your money........2007-08-14
This book just waste paper and guide you nothing. I used the free outline from pli site and watching its vedio together giving me a basic solid understanding on the subject. But I do not get that from this book. Two weeks ago, I got the Examples and Explanations on the same subject which give me a good understanding on the subject. If you need to buy one, I recommad the one from Examples and Explanations, and NOT this JUNK.
