This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build.......2007-04-09

I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.

This book is a good tool for anyone, do-it-yourselfer or not, to grasp how North American homes are put together. An excellent tool to learn the nomenclature of houses and house construction. I missed a discussion of the the reasons for and the pros and cons of the various methods. On the other hand, the lack of text is a strongpoint of this book, at least for those who want to quickly get up to speed on home construction.

If you are new to Blender and 3d animation, this book will help you to "open your mind to the possibilities". You will learn to build and animate your own character step by step. Easy to follow and very well explained. The included DVD has a lot of animation samples and source files used in the book. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Blender Intro and Character Design.......2007-08-17

Of all the books I've read on 3D, this is the first that actually has been useful and direct to me. I have been using Blender 3D for a year now, but I found that there was alot of cool features that I missed that I then learned from this book.

Besides a great introduction, this book flows smoothly with the creation of a face from only a reference photo (with all the intermediate steps to get there), and then the rest of the book is showing how to build a a fully rigged (ready for animation) character from scratch. I am so amazed with this book.

This is a definitely a worthwhile book. I teach Blender 3D for a organization at Texas A&M University, and I suggest this to them all.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed........2007-06-01

I've been learning Blender for a while now, piecing it together from stray tutorials and such, but with this very affordable book, I've found exactly what I needed. I already knew a lot of what the book covers, but it helped fill in some gaps that most online tutorials take for granted, and gave me a whole, more complete view of how to go about my business with Blender. I would definately buy another book from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Original and intelligent way of understanding human abilities.......2007-05-16

In one sense what Howard Gardner does in this book is expand our sense of what the human mind is and the human being actually does. For instead of accepting what had long been the standard model in which there are essentially only two different kinds of Intelligence, verbal and mathematical he takes note of other sides of our action which were not connected with the theory and study of Intelligence.
Gardner suggests that there are seven basic kinds of Intelligence. These kinds of Intelligence were defined by Mark K. Smith in Infed Encylopedia as follows.
"Linguistic intelligence involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to accomplish certain goals....
Logical-mathematical intelligence consists of the capacity to analyze problems logically, carry out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically....
Musical intelligence involves skill in the performance, composition, and appreciation of musical patterns....
Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence entails the potential of using one's whole body or parts of the body to solve problems. It is the ability to use mental abilities to coordinate bodily movements....
Spatial intelligence involves the potential to recognize and use the patterns of wide space and more confined areas....
Interpersonal intelligence is concerned with the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people. It allows people to work effectively with others. ...
Intrapersonal intelligence entails the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate one's feelings, fears and motivations..."
Gardner also suggests that there may be at least two other kinds of Intelligence, a form of intelligence which enables us to connect with, understand relate properly to the natural world. And a spiritual intelligence .
This theory of Intelligences which Gardner sees as a new theory of human nature has its primary importance as educational tool.
It is also developed in some sense to overcome the straitjacketing of the standard model of Intelligence Testing.
As a layman I cannot say much about the scientific weight and value of this theory. It seems to make sense on common sense terms. But one might also want to ask if there is not a certain heirarchy in value , importance relating to the various kinds of intelligence.
What is clear is that this work is of major importance for all those who would study human abilities, and their development.
By broadening our understanding of what Intelligence is Gardner would also seem to have the goal of widening the circle of those people who we ordinarily think of and define as 'intelligent'. And also more importantly eliminating for many the sense of stigma at not necessarily being the most successful at the standard kinds of Intelligence Test.

2 out of 5 stars Nice start, but not an adequate theoretical model for intelligence and learning.......2007-03-04

While it is an admirable attempt to create a more complex description of human intelligence than the traditional I.Q. measures, Gardner's theory is still pretty crude. He proposes that there are discrete types of intelligence that operate independently of each other--cognition is a lot messier than that, and if one thinks about it for awhile it is impossible to neatly separate different kinds of thinking.

Musicians, for instance, must constantly employ "kinesthetic intelligence" as well as "musical intelligence" just to manipulate their instruments or voices. There is also often a tremendous amount of overlap between "musical intelligence" and "linguistic intelligence"; the great tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, for example, stressed the importance of "playing the lyrics", or using the words of a composition to guide the way he played. Certainly for blues, folk and rap performers it is impossible to separate language from music. Conversely, great writers use musical elements such as rhythm, repetition and assonance in their work; the same elements are an integral part of spoken language, and it was the ability to use them so powerfully that made orators such as King and Roosevelt effective.

There are many other examples of how inextricably bound Gardner's proposed modes of thinking are. Einstein stated that in addition to being able to move numbers around and think abstractly, it was his ability to visualize concepts, to "think in pictures", that enabled him to develop his theories.

On the other hand, Gardner also oversimplifies the enormous complexity that involves each type of intelligence he lists. Visual processing, for example, takes place in so many different parts of the brain that one can hardly consider it a discrete operation. Language is also dizzyingly complex.

Rather than focusing entirely on the kinds of intelligence needed for specific disciplines--a horizontal model-- it might useful to consider a more vertical understanding of cognition. Explicit (conceptual/factual/critical) intelligence is quite distinct from implicit (procedural/intuitive) intelligence--they employ separate parts of the brain and require different approaches to learning. ultimately though, they are also very interdependent processes that constantly complement each other.

Gardner also states that people who are gifted in one type of intelligence are usually not gifted in others; there is certainly no shortage of examples that contradict this assertion. Leonardo is the most obvious one-- aside from his accomplishments as an artist and scientist, he virtually stopped painting between the ages of 20-25 because he was in such high demand as a musician! Michelangelo, Cellini, Rubens, Blake and Newton are a few other multi-talented giants throughout history who come to mind. More recently, there was an entire generation of rock stars who started off as visual artists during the sixties and seventies--Lennon, Bowie, Eno, Ferry, and Byrne were all gifted in more than one mode. It is true that very few people become GREAT in more than one field, but few people become GREAT at anything-- that does not mean they are not multi-talented. Tony Bennett is an excellent painter--better than many professionals-- even though he is far more memorable as a singer.

My hunch is that the very opposite of Gardner's statement is true: most people who are gifted excel in more than one of his dimensions of intelligence. The human brain is a restless organ and, if encouraged, a creative child will voraciously explore and combine different kinds of thinking. There are examples, such as Mozart, of astonishing highly-specified talents but I think these are not the norm. Ultimately, it is the ability to think metaphorically and see relationships and structures that allows us to create important work in any discipline, even though we might be attracted to particular avenues of expression.

Finally, self-esteem, identity and other emotional factors are obviously crucial elements in all learning--Gardner's approach to teaching creates the risk of prematurely labeling students as either gifted or limited in particular areas. many people are told at an early age that they are not good at math, art, writing, etc., and end up permanently stunted in their development. this is the classic "wizard of oz" scenario--we get a notion that we are dumb/heartless/cowardly and this becomes who we are until someone tells us otherwise. it is extremely important for teachers to make children aware of what a magnificent, versatile organ the human brain is and how great their potential is in many possible fields of endeavor.

3 out of 5 stars A Classic, But Debatable, Pedagogical Concept.......2006-02-20

If you do nothing else with Gardner's book, please read it. It will impart ideas that you have not heard before in a clear, but scholastic, voice. Beyond that, please read with a suspecious eye.

Even though he presents the theory thoroughly, it resides within idealism and, in my opinion, removes itself from diverse cultural content.

I mildly disagree with his opinion that Piaget's cognitive thrust for logic-mathematical thinking does not apply readily to other domains (like musical intelligence). On the contrary, I think he uses that logic in reference to those individuals who learn other disciplines using the same order and precision that remains the hallmark of the mathematical discipline. If one forgets classical learning and allows it take on an aesthetic persona, I believe Piaget's assimilating, accomadating way of thinking allows anyone (the mathematician, artist, writer, athlete, etc.) to "construct" his environment. It's not an exclusive logioc-mathematical domain.

His entire idea of intelligence in general does not pay thorough enough homage to other cultures' values apart from the Western Hemisphere. "Solving problems" and "creating a prodcut" in the United States stand in the same genius shoes as recognizing faces among rainforest dwelling natives. It depends on who establishes the standard defintion of the word INTELLIGENCE.

I hold several other questions about his theory, but, in the end, how it applies to my teaching represents the whole purpose for reading it.

For me, I think this theory somewhat rationalizes and makes excuses for parents who do not prepare their children for school. It may act as a way to diversity teaching, not learning. The lack of skill in paying attention and maintaining proper decorum in the school gets written off as "teachers not teaching the child's learning style" rather than parents not preparing their children for formal education.

If parents guided and trained children to trust, explore, develop initiative, and be self-reliant, we would have not need to discussion "multiple intelligences" for most children would develop into competent contributing learners and citizens.

That's why this book is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars The solution to all educational problems.......2005-06-15

Currently, educational studies are being revealed, which are showing that students of minority heritage (particularly Black and Latino) have an affinity towards InterPersonal learning and Tactile learning

Interpersonal = learning through being social and group work

Tactile = learning by building or constructing things

Our current educational institutions, especially high school and below, cater to Auditory (hearing) and Intrapersonal (introverted, little group work) learners

So in total, poverty and language barriers are likely not the biggest culprit towards our low school scores, in areas of economic problems ----- rather, it is the fact that teachers are not teaching to the strengths of our children - as a matter of fact, most children are being taught within the areas of their learning weaknesses

With that in mind, FRAMES OF MIND is one of the first books to distiguish the way we learn and how to cater to it

Within this book lies the best solutions to our educational system, and its only a matter of getting the teachers to facilitate their lesson plans differently

I highly recommend this book - especially to those who are interested in seeing what the future of America is all about

1 out of 5 stars Nice theory, application is the problem.......2003-10-30

On first glance, much of the rhetoric on "multiple intelligences" does not sound particularly unreasonable, which is part of why it is so dangerously insidious. But a deeper look reveals three profound problems:

1. The core problem with this fad is the utter lack of any suggestion as to how such supposed "learning styles" might be OBJECTIVELY and QUANTITATIVELY identified or assessed, or how any of this would translate into effective teaching practices. Ultimately, there is a complete absence of even the slimmest quantitative evidence that any of this has any utility.
2. In an attempt to provide different kinds of exercises and projects for the different "learning styles" of the students in the classroom, spectacular blocks of precious time are wasted that could be better spent.
3. If the education industry really took to heart the notion that different kids require different approaches, then the obvious conclusion is that it's nuts to require all of the students in a geographic district to attend the same school. A student should be sent to the school that best addresses his or her needs, not merely according to which side of the street he or she lives on.

There are many good sources for true "critical thinking" and commentary about Gardner's theories. Try looking on the web for the "Illinois Loop" and going to their page on Multiple Intelligences.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Handle with extreme care.......2007-07-16

I have enormous problems with this dated, confused and 'gappy' book, and advise would be readers to exercise _extreme_ caution with it, particularly with the examples, a great number of which are a long, long way from currently accepted best practice.

I don't believe that "Programmer to Programmer" describes this book well. The author's confusing and patchy descriptions of language fundamentals are not useful to those readers who are highly experienced in other programming languages such as C or C++. Neither does it seem that the author has clearly identified the target reader, as I imagine that the book will bewilder some beginners too. For example, for reasons unknown the author seemed to feel the need to embark on a "fundamentals of OOP" tutorial, a subject quite inappropriate for a "programmer-to-programmer" text as it should be taken as read, and one which is in any case too large to be adequately covered in a few pages. I imagine this may merely succeed in confusing novice programmers, who really do need to consult a proper introduction elsewhere. And why on earth did the author feel that a quick descent into UML was appropriate at the start of the third chapter? Another short section is devoted to explaining bit pattern operations, a subject that is arguably best left to real textbooks on programming fundamentals for beginners. At the same time, in many, many cases discussions of basic topics that experienced programmers would expect to find are simply absent. Javascript is in many ways highly unusual as a programming language, and because of the familiar syntax, C, C++ or Java programmers may be initially led to believe that its behaviour will be close to their expectations, yet this is not the case. For this reason it is crucial for a reference text to take care to tick off these crucial language-conversion issues properly.

Returning to the code examples, I have many problems with their poor quality. A sizeable number do not conform to current "unobtrusive" best practise. I can understand why this might have been done for reasons of brevity, but that doesn't excuse the poor example this sets. There is no discussion of accessibility, which is unforgiveable. And some of examples feature outdated, broken or deprecated techniques. The discussion of hacks to bolster up browser support for addEventListener, for example. Browser-sniffing, a deprecated technique features far too much, indeed a worrying number of examples rely on it. The author of this review is nowhere near competent to comment in detail on the quality of every code example, but the poor techniques clearly visible in some have the effect of casting doubt on the whole.

Despite being published in 2005, the book is simply too old to cover the recent tidal wave of high quality libraries which are now available, and which properly deal with some of the most difficult issues in basic javascript development, issues which this book simply does not acknowledge. The book deserves criticism for being yet one more contributor to the vast amount of poor quality javascript code on the web, yet of course it has to be said that any paper book will inevitable be vulnerable to the problem of obsolescence, since javascript support in browsers is so poor currently and techniques are changing rapidly right now.

This review is unapologetically harsh, yet I am not going to say "do not buy this book" outright. Although dated and harmful for beginners, there is a lot of material in this book, and for very experienced programmers in other programming languages who are forewarned about the book's unreliability it will at least give some idea of the issues and will provide a starting point for gathering a list of topics to be researched. But many readers may be simply better off consulting the blogs of the various acknowledged javascript gurus instead. Reading Brendan Eich's own articles would be a start.

5 out of 5 stars Javascript Overload.......2007-04-06

This book is perfect! I have been needing a book that gives a complete study of Javascript as a programming language and this is it. Where most books discuss how to make a popup window, this book explains objects and inheritance and other concepts that take Javascript from being a basic dynamic script into a full featured one that is capable of doing practically anything you want.

The book is well written with both hypothetical and real-world examples. For each example there is a discussion about what is going to happen, the example that is notated for what is going on, and a post-example where it explains what basically happened.

If you are trying to learn on your own instead of taking a class, you may want to buy this book as it will probably meet/exceed your needs.

5 out of 5 stars Best Pro JavaScript book on the market.......2007-03-06

JavaScript has progressed from a nice little scripting language for some neat effects to a widely used programming language that is used in internal and external web applications. Not that it happened over night, but it eventually did happen and knowing and learning JavaScript is a desired skill in the web community.

This book by Nicholas Zakas goes language concepts such as ECMAScript basics, using objects, inheritance, the DOM, regular expressions and events. Basically everything you need to know about JavaScript to get a good handle on practical implementation such as form validation, browser detection, image roll-overs, sorting tables, drag and drop, error handling and XML handling, and flash embedding. This is a very complete book on almost every topic you can think of when dealing with JavaScript and current uses.

Chapter 1 - JavaScript History
Chapter 2 - ECMAScript Basics - Variables, Reference types, Operators, Statements, and Functions. ECMAScript - The core language JavaScript is based on.
Chapter 3 - Object basics - Working with objects, Creating objects, and Practical examples
Chapter 4 - Inheritance - Foundation of an object oriented language
Chapter 5 - Using JavaScript in the browser; basic JavaScript objects: window, document, location, navigator, screen
Chapter 6 - DOM basics
Chapter 7 - Regular expressions - Simple and complex patterns, understanding the RegExp object
Chapter 8 - Browser and Object detection
Chapter 9 - Events - Event flow, listeners, types of events, and cross browser events
Chapter 10 - Advanced DOM techniques
Chapter 11 - Forms and Data Integrity
Chapter 12 - Sorting tables
Chapter 13 - Drag and Drop - Learn how to simulate Ajax techniques
Chapter 14 - Error Handling - Try/Catch/Finally
Chapter 15 - XML in JavaScript - XPath, XSLT and support in browsers
Chapter 16 - Client-Server Communications - Cookies, HTTP requests, hidden frames, GET/POST differences
Chapter 17 - Web Services - SOAP, WSDL, practical examples
Chapter 18 - Interacting with Plugins - Embedding ActiveX, Flash, Applets and plugin detection
Chapter 19 - Deployment issues - Security and international concerns
Chapter 20 - Future of JavaScript

I've never seen a more complete book on JavaScript to date. If you are new to JavaScript or need a great reference or need to learn some advanced techniques (DOM, drag and drop, XML, web services) this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars JavaScript Professional.......2007-01-20

I purchased Beginning JavaScript and learned a lot even though I have a good programming background (Java, C++, Q-Basic, HTML, CSS, PHP). The Beginning JavaScript helped learn all of the quirks of the Browser Object Model and Document Object Model (the basic programming skills lessons did were too easy). The Professional JavaScript is great because it gets to the point with the "basic" programming and then teaches you some of the more advanced concepts/methods. It also goes into more depth of the BOM and DOM. There are NOT a lot of coding examples like the Beginning JavaScript (which I like because they take up space making the book large and are often too easy or obvious). Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the leading software tool for the creation of Web sites and other HTML interfaces. It's remarkably capable, able to deal intelligently with everything from fonts and images to JavaScript for client-side data validation and embedded Java applets. In most cases, Dreamweaver will save you time over hand-coding--and yield better-looking pages to boot. The program's learning curve, though, isn't trivial. That's why Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual is worth having on hand as you learn to use Dreamweaver, and worth keeping within reach as you tackle increasingly difficult Web development work.

David McFarland wrote this book, but the influence of esteemed series editor David Pogue is obvious in the careful coverage of features and frequent touches of humor (books about applications can be whangingly dull; the books in Pogue's Missing Manual series consistently manage to avoid this problem while maintaining comprehensiveness). The two men treat Dreamweaver's numerous features (and the even more numerous ways of putting them to use) cleverly, with a combination of procedures and side information that clarifies many oddball situations as well as straightforward conditions. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to create HTML (XHTML and CSS, strictly speaking) documents using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. In addition to the basic stuff (text, images, links, and frames), the book shows you how to build forms for data submission and embed Flash movies and Java applets. There's also a lot of helpful emphasis on Dreamweaver's productivity features, like snippet libraries and file transfer utilities. A special section shows you how to do some server-side work with databases.

Book Description

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 offers a rich environment for building professional web sites, with drag-and-drop simplicity, clean HTML code, and dynamic database-driven web site creation tools. It comes with everything except perhaps the most important feature of all: a printed manual. Enter Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual, the book that enables both first-time and experienced web designers to bring stunning, interactive web sites to life. What sets this new edition apart is the crystal-clear writing, welcome humor, and exclusive features like these: With over 500 illustrations, a handcrafted index, and the clarity of thought that has made bestsellers of every Missing Manual to date, this edition is the ultimate atlas for Dreamweaver MX 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver Manual.......2007-04-11

Fantastic, really simple tutorials and suggested websites for further info. Deals with the basics to get an extemely powerful website online.

There are many more aspects to web design but anyone from the total beginner to intermediate should find this book helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-11-10

Better than Dreamweaver MX 2004 "Training From the Source". This is a step by step book for beginners thru experts. I found it easy to follow and understand. It is also a good reference book for the experienced, which I am not. Why Macromedia could not furnish a book like this with there software I will never understand. The same goes for the new Dreamweaver 8. They want you to buy there product but not show you how to use it. This is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very good manual.......2006-07-13

So many software books are so confusing and difficult to understand, I really appreciateone that is clear and truly helpful, which this one is.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-03-16

I have read this book cover to cover. You can read it in front of your computer and perform the tutorials or you can simple read an look at the illustrations. Both provide you with a very accurate experience. The online web site allows you to download all of the necessary files to perform your labs if you desire. It is simple, elegant, and well thought out book. You can't walk away from this book and not say that you did not truely learn to use Dreamweaver MX 2004. I struggled to learn this program, after reading the book, I have built several complex websites, complete with dynamic database integration. This book is that good!

5 out of 5 stars The Dreamweaver Missing Manual Rocks!.......2006-03-15

I admit I'm biased because I've had Dave as a teacher and he's a great one, but his book is like his teaching -- clear, comprehensible, practical and most importantly, funny. Who wouldn't want to work on the National Exasperator pages? His tutorials are excellent, easy to use and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great homes.......2007-02-07

After reading the book I concluded I have zero hope of building one and I need to contact the author to build it for me. Brilliant brouchure for his company. I would take off stars for the flagrant selling but you know what it is just that good a book on the subject and the fact is its hard work and he is good at it. Hell just buy the book and have them build it.

3 out of 5 stars A book about very, very big houses.......2003-02-05

This book contains wonderful pictures of homes that are mostly 5,000 sq ft and larger. With one exception it completely ignores fine smaller timberframe homes. I was reminded more of ski lodges than homes by the places featured. But the pictures are nice and if a 5,000 sq ft plus size house is what you're interested in I suppose this book has some interesting ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A Must if you are thinking of building a Timber Frame.......2001-08-06

Whether you are going to act as general contractor, or hire it all out, this book is a great over view of all of the aspects of building a Timber Frame. While not dwelling in great detail, it has lots of drawings, photos, and descriptions, to acquaint the reader with construction techniques, electrical and plumbing considerations, and room layouts in a typical Timber Frame home. Definitley another fine book from Mr. Benson.

5 out of 5 stars An honest and complete.......2000-06-09

This is by far the best of several books I purchased on building timber frame homes. I started with a list of questions about shrinkage, sound proofing, electrical, plumbing, etc. and found clear concise answers to all of them through text, drawings, and photos.

I trust experts (like this author) who talk about the mistakes they've made and show me how to avoid them. He presents options and if you decide to pick the lower rated ones, he describes the likely consequences and how to minimize them.

5 out of 5 stars great resource.......1999-12-24

This book is an excellent guide to the craft of timberframing and complete house design and finishing. I have just finished building my own red oak timber framed house in Tedds back yard here in New Hampshire and found many valuable hints and tips throughout this book, especially liked the sections on plumbing and wiring which can be a challenge in a timber frame house. I also agree with another reviewer that the quality of the book is excellent and deserves a place on your coffe table for guests to peruse. To top it all off Tedd is a very honorable and genuine person who espouses the inherent charms of living in a well crafted timber frame house better than any other books or articles I have read on the subject. Every day in my new home is a real delight and I never get tired of viewing the fine joinery throughout the house. Benson Woodworking also has an excellent web site to examine much of the steps in building a timber frame house. Also for those of you who enjoy the photos in this book , Tedd has a brand new book out showing dozens of homes they have built in the past in beautiful photographic form.

In the first of his three debates with George W. Bush, 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry argued against the war in Iraq not by directly condemning it but by citing the various ways in which airport and commercial shipping security had been jeopardized due to the war's sizable price tag. In so doing, he re-framed the war issue to his advantage while avoiding discussing it in the global terrorism terms favored by President Bush. One possible reason for this tactic could have been that Kerry familiarized himself with the influential linguist George Lakoff, who argues in Don't Think of an Elephant that much of the success the Republican Party can be attributed to a persistent ability to control the language of key issues and thus position themselves in favorable terms to voters. While Democrats may have valid arguments, Lakoff points out they are destined to lose when they and the news media accept such nomenclature as "pro-life," "tax relief," and "family values," since to argue against such inherently positive terminology necessarily casts the arguer in a negative light. Lakoff offers recommendations for how the progressive movement can regain semantic equity by repositioning their arguments, such as countering the conservative call for "Strong Defense" with a call for "A Stronger America" (curiously, one of the key slogans of the Kerry camp). Since the book was published during the height of the presidential campaign, Lakoff was unable to provide an analytical perspective on that race. He does, however, apply the notion of rhetorical framing devices to the 2003 California recall election in an insightful analysis of the Schwarzenegger victory. Don't Think of an Elephant is a bit rambling, overexplaining some concepts while leaving others underexplored, but it provides a compelling linguistic analysis of political campaigning. --John Moe

    Book Description

Don't Think of an Elephant! is the definitive handbook for understanding what happened in the 2004 election and communicating effectively about key issues facing America today. Author George Lakoff has become a key advisor to the Democratic party, helping them develop their message and frame the political debate.
In this book Lakoff explains how conservatives think, and how to counter their arguments. He outlines in detail the traditional American values that progressives hold, but are often unable to articulate. Lakoff also breaks down the ways in which conservatives have framed the issues, and provides examples of how progressives can reframe the debate.
Lakoff's years of research and work with environmental and political leaders have been distilled into this essential guide, which shows progressives how to think in terms of values instead of programs, and why people vote their values and identities, often against their best interests.
Don't Think of An Elephant! is the antidote to the last forty years of conservative strategizing and the right wing's stranglehold on political dialogue in the United States.
Read it, take action-and help take America back.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this Book.......2007-09-09

I've read this book twice now, and each time I read it I gain a better understanding of my surroundings. Lakoff does a great job of first describing what he means by "framing" and how it applies to nearly every aspect of life. He then applies his idea of framing and cognitive dissonance to political affiliations. This book does an excellent job of explaining almost all the issues that ail our political system today. The book explains timeless dialogue between the left and right over the last 25 years.

I've bought four or five copies now, and it's one of my favourite books to give to graduates. Definitely a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for progressives and liberals.......2007-08-05

I appreciated the way Lakoff provided a frame for progressive values. I purchased a copy for several friends and family members.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Think of an Elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate.......2007-06-27

Lakoff's book is truly a guide for progressive values in the United States. His diligent work as a linguist really informed me of the concerted and deliberate efforts of the ultra conservative politic right to control the debate, messaging, and election outcomes. I am a moderate and was shocked into action after reading this book, and more than once. It is a quick, informative, and provacative statement on what we as individuals need to do to get this country back on track and in alignment with the Bill of Rights and The Constitution. Lakoff educated me and it has had a profound impact on my life and involvement in our democracy.

5 out of 5 stars A concise primer on what really makes political messaging work........2007-05-30

This is a great primer on cognitive science as it relates to political messaging. Lakoff has done a lot of ground breaking work in illuminating how verbal metaphor dictates cognition. And here he presents this idea in simple, concrete language, with plenty of sharp examples, to explain how these same principles dictate how we perceive political messages.

Some have posted negative reviews of this book by criticizing its politics, which are unabashedly liberal and progressive. But the value in a book like this lies not in whatever its political message might be, which is really quite vague, but rather lies in the insights it provides anyone into how a prospective audience will receive a message, and how best to construct a message to gain broad acceptance.

Lakoff "decodes" the value politics of the past several decades to show how conservative politicians, by employing the right verbal metaphors to "frame" their objectives, have had great success. While liberal politicians have largely failed to appreciate how these "frames" create and manipulate the values that voters will support.

Buy and read this book if you want to be a more responsible and informed citizen voter in a message saturated political environment.

    1 out of 5 stars Can I give it 0 stars? .......2007-04-18

Actually, I'll give it 1 star because it is important to try to understand how the radical left (who get passes in the media everyday) really think. This book is nothing but propaganda, BUT is surprisingly honest about the secular left's intentions, tactics, techniques, and procedures for undermining American culture and economy. If you're not concerned about creeping Socialism or secular pressure from the left, then read this book. It will be eye opening to finally see how the Michael Moore, Al Franken, Ward Churchill, Nancy Pelosi crowd REALLY think. Go to a library and check this one out. Then get out and fight these guys to the death (figuratively, of course). If you follow the pack mentality of the aforementioned clowns, then by all means buy this and feed your misguided preconceptions that the America that championed the world in battles vs communism, fascism, Nazism, slavery (you heard me right... Frederick Douglas, John Brown, the Quakers et al came from America (and England), NOT South Asia, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Africa or Arabia- where eunuchs were still acceptable at the turn of the 20th Century BC) is an awful, immoral country. Oh that's right... Lakoff says us Americans are the terrorists. Or is it little Eichmanns?
