Book Description
Amid mounting concern over the loss of jobs to low-wage economies, one fact is clear: America's prosperity hinges on the ability of its businesses to continually introduce new products and services. But what makes for a creative economy? How can the remarkable surge of innovation that fueled the boom of the 1990s be sustained?
For an answer, Richard K. Lester and Michael J. Piore examine innovation strategies in some of the economy's most dynamic sectors. Through eye-opening case studies of new product development in fields such as cell phones, medical devices, and blue jeans, two fundamental processes emerge.
One of these processes, analysis--rational problem solving--dominates management and engineering practice. The other, interpretation, is not widely understood, or even recognized--although, as the authors make clear, it is absolutely crucial to innovation. Unlike problem solving, interpretation embraces and exploits ambiguity, the wellspring of creativity in the economy. By emphasizing interpretation, and showing how these two radically different processes can be combined, Lester and Piore's book gives managers and designers the concepts and tools to keep new products flowing.
But the authors also offer an unsettling critique of national policy. By ignoring the role of interpretation, economic policymakers are drawing the wrong lessons from the 1990s boom. The current emphasis on expanding the reach of market competition will help the analytical processes needed to implement innovation. But if unchecked it risks choking off the economy's vital interpretive spaces. Unless a more balanced policy approach is adopted, warn Lester and Piore, America's capacity to innovate--its greatest economic asset--will erode.

More Interpretation, Less Problem Solving Helps Innovation.......2005-10-13
I work in a business that struggles to be innovative. There's many very smart people who are superb problem solvers. This book explains why a problem solving mindset may actually interfere with listening to customers and stimulating new ideas.
By thinking "who else should I invite into this conversation who might have another perspective," and "how can I get these people together and stimulate a deep conversation," I've begun to see another way to work with my colleagues that may help our organization push the envelope more. The authors offered very specific examples of these kinds of interpretative conversations.
This book has good case studies about garment industry, cell phone industry and biotech. Their economic argument pushing for more public spaces where interpretative conversations can occur was of less interest and I thought weaker than their company examples.

Book Description
Wars are fought on the battlefield, but the technologies that enable 21st century warfare are developed in research laboratories. Within the walls of corporate, government, and academic labs, researchers are probing the edges of science to uncover technologies that will make warfare more efficient -- and more deadly.
This book looks at the people behind the curtain, and at the next generation of tactical, information, communication, vehicular, biological, and cryptographic systems. Featuring in-depth interviews with the project directors and scientists performing this groundbreaking research, The Geeks of War also examines their scientific, political, patriotic, and financial motives, as well as the implications these technologies may have for the future. Presenting the views of numerous respected military, business, and technology analysts, The Geeks of War takes readers inside America's leading military technology research facilities -- exploring a clandestine world that few people ever see.
Customer Reviews:
Broad spectrum but lack of depth.......2007-03-01
The Geeks of War attempted to cover the next generation military technologies in many aspects such as tactical, information, communication, cryptographic systems and etc. it's a good listing of what have been developed in the government and academic laboratories for people who are curious about cutting-edge technologies and wanna know a few things they had never heard of.
However, I can only give this book 3 stars because I felt the author had dedicated 80% of this book on trying to cover everything but very little on each technology described. The real content of each technology he attempted to describe reads very much like abstracts of conference papers or just a little bit longer and more detailed than that. It provides you information just enough to forget about them after finishing this book, let along the space taken by all those jargons and abbreviations.
The so called in-depth interviews with the project directors mentioned on the back of this book are merely simplified overviews given by those researchers who are trying to give you an idea but won't bother to go into details in case you start getting lost. When a new technology especially military related technology is developed, there're many political, economical or environmental considerations have to be taken into account. Various approaches would be taken at each stage based on those considerations till the new tech start taking shape. I didn't see much of this side of the story in this book.
A fine analysis of the next generation of weapons and communications systems.......2005-10-06
Military technologies of modern times may be viewed as primitive tomorrow: that's the message of The Greeks Of War: The Secretive Labs And Brilliant Minds Behind Tomorrow's Warfare Technologies. New military techniques are born in not just government labs, but private and academic labs as well: author Edwards gained access to individuals at these institutions and conducted interviews with the scientists, analysts and program directors involved in battlefield technology. From how weapons are developed to other lines of wartime technology, Geeks Of War offers fine analysis of the next generation of weapons and communications systems.
Fascinating Insights into Military Technology.......2005-06-30
A nation at war focuses media attention on the technology that protects our warfighters, provides an advantage over the enemy, and protects the homeland. Interest in the development of technology to improve our lives is intense, and in demand. "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we......?
In Geeks, John Edwards, a veteran business technology journalist, takes us on a fascinating ride through a rich resource of developments. While these inventions, creations, products, and emerging technologies are initially designed to enhance military effectiveness, a large proportion have civilian applications that can significantly improve our quality of life.
Readers will enjoy an eye-opening tour through seven (chapters) technological arenas. After a relatively slow start through the introduction-interesting, but not exciting, we begin with a look at tactical systems. Finding things and breaking them is the way the author describes this aspect of war-an apt description. With our imaginations tickled by the creativity and possibilities of these almost-science fiction advances, we continue our journey with a look at how information is gathered and applied. More and more of the civilian applications leap from the pages. We begin to wonder how many of these hi-tech (OK, geeky) ideas are actually reality already, and how many are still in the design phase.
The book explores developments in telecommunications (like ad hoc wireless networks), reconnaissance (a robot that can fly), disaster relief (mass casualty treatment), and easily transferable health, medicine, and biotechnology advances (QuikClot to stop serous bleeding). Logistics, security, and clothing are covered in the final three chapters. As you near the end of the book, your eyes-and mind-may glaze over in amazement and intellectual overload. The intriguing research into intelligence and high-tech clothing will hold your attention.
A valuable glossary follows the text, a welcome tool. The book is well-indexed, a helpful feature when you want to find something to discuss with someone else. And you probably will! The surprisingly enjoyable book-I didn't expect such an imaginative work that was highly readable at the same time-will be of interest to young and old, military and not. Innovators in all fields will find the text stimulating. You won't find political statements or innuendos, just straight reporting.

Book Description
The aim of this book is to contribute to the understanding of product innovation - how it takes place and how it affects firms and the economy. It links product innovation to interactive learning and to the performance of firms. It studies the interconnections between these three elements on the basis of unique data sets and detailed case studies. The book will prove helpful for managers, employees and policy makers as well as for scholars and students who want to understand the role of product innovation in the economy.
In the book it is shown that product innovation is of major importance. For the economy as a whole, the introduction of new products is fundamental for economic growth. Process innovation without product innovation would sooner or later result in economic stagnation and in what has been called technological unemployment. In turbulent sectors product innovation is necessary for firms to survive and grow.
The book also shows that product innovation is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. In order to capture this complexity authors combine different theoretical perspectives, different levels of aggregation, and different methodological approaches.

A Guide to Building Sustainable Businesses.......2007-05-11
I found NAON to be a encyclopaedia on Sustainability and ideal for manufacturers that can not afford a Sustainability Expert... the book is a great way to learn and/or review all the key concepts and programs that are moving the world of Sustainability. It is a guide on how to position your company to profit or at least not lose out in this new world of manufacturing.

Efficiency and Least-cost, end use.......2007-04-05
Amory Lovins, et al., focus on solutions, not problems. Alternative "soft" pathways, from an international perspective provide the first of many blueprints for sustainability through effiiciency. This discusses, in detail, examples from other countries and shows how US arrogance is leaving us behind, costing more and limiting alternatives. We are lagging in every sector - industry, transportation, farming, construction, energy, housing and our global impact.
At present the US has the highest greenhouse gas emissions. India and China are close behind and will soon surpass US emissions. It will take an international effort to mitigate global climate weirding. This provides constructive pathways that apply to individual and regional lives on a personal level.
Reader reviews.......2007-03-27
The book (The Natural Advantage of Nations) shows a lot of good arguments to convince skeptics. To highlight those who have profited from sustainability is a good strategy. I hope the book will be an eye opener for at least a few of those, not yet occupied by sustainability.
Frank Zimmermann, City of Heidelberg, Head Agenda 21-Office
Emerging from Australia, this (The Natural Advantage of Nations) is a tightly textured textbook packed with detail and coming from a multidisciplined source of experienced voices, it is a treat to read, knowing that this is youth at its most powerful - focused, aware and fully integrated in their points of view. It is supported by the CSIRO, which in my small opinion is, with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), one of two Australian organizational Jewels - both now part of the public commons.
....I'm jumping out of my chair to tell you more detail from this book because there is so much excellent material in it for students of any subject.
A reader, Web-of-UNME
I recommend an Australian inspired book "The Natural Advantage of Nations" to anyone who is seriously interested in a sustainable form of capitalism to give all people the chance to enjoy the quality of life of the West.

More than a pep talk, it's a how-to manual for comfortable survival........2007-03-26
This book is for everyone who is despondent about humanity's chances of living past the next hundred years. Crucially, this book is both for those who view saving the planet and ourselves as a moral imperative and for those who ask how, and when, and even can we afford it. Lovins' "Natural Capitalism" sketched out how businesses could enhance their profitability by changing their paradigm towards something that thinks beyond the next quarter.
This book differs from Natural Capitalism, another brilliant read, in that it moves past the concepts to look at the nuts and bolts of a movement that encourages business to mesh the pursuit of profitability with environmental security through innovation. This book throws light on the structure behind the sketch of Natural Capitalism.
Previous books such as Suzuki's `Good News for a Change', Benyus' `Biomimetics' and even Lovins' Natural Capitalism describe success stories without ever really detailing what you need to do to make one of these success stories yourself. You won't see much in the way of "this requires...", "they should..." or "they shouldn't.." in other texts; you will in this one. In short, this book is also a "how-to" manual written by people who have experience of `making a difference'.
The section on how to use industry cluster development to reorient firms, communities and government towards long term profitability, or in many cases simple survival, is a case in point. The guidelines on processes and institutional frameworks mesh seamlessly with revolutionary work done by organizations such as ZERI (Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives) to provide a sustainable, fruitful, profitable and socially just future for all of us.
My recommendation is that if you're one of those people who say "I'm concerned but what can I do?" then start by buying this book for your political representative, your boss and any concerned friends you might have.
Excellent project, but book is a disaster.......2007-03-08
All the contributors, projects and initiatives mentioned in the book are indeed worthy of applause.
However, the book is simply a hodgepodge of references, difficult to read, and flows poorly.
Finally, Amory Lovins is NOT the author! He contributes a brilliant forward to the publication, but is not the author.
Basically, you're best served buying the books by Lovins and McDonough, then following progress on the topics they discuss via RMI website and the site mentioned by this book's authors.

Book Description
At the beginning of the twenty-first century it is common sense that science, technology and innovation will be of increasing importance to the well being of all. Nobody can turn a blind eye to the penetrating ways progress in communication technologies, new materials and biotechnology revolutionise our lives.
Although the conversion of science and technology into marketable products that cover societal needs is largely a matter of the private sector, the public sector has its role to play. European integration and liberalisation promote the interaction of various actors in science and technology. Also the perceived arrears with the United States and Japan has prompted the European Union to step up their R&D spending to reach 3% of gross domestic product by 2010. Individual Member States have taken concrete measures to promote their R&D, and Belgium is one of them. But there is a long and bumpy way to go still because of the slow growth rate the economies are currently experiencing and the tied budgetary constraints policy makers are confronted with. In the face of this it has to be acknowledged that many differences exist between countries. Differences are part and parcel of the internationalisation process and, within it, small open economies are confronted with specific opportunities and problems of their own.
This volume aims at informing and stimulating the debate on policy issues relating to science, technology and innovation. For those not acquainted with the subject it offers an introduction to the pallet of issues that play a role in the current state of affairs. Others might find the guidelines to policy more instructive. It is by no means the final word on the subject.

Book Description
This volume provides a collection of cross-country analyses of innovation, showing that the effects of innovation upon firms vary from one country to another. Incumbents perish in one country, while they thrive in the same industry in another country. Startups thrive in response to new technological breakthroughs in one country and struggle in another country. Drawing upon studies of semiconductors, disk drives and biotechnology, and examining institutions such as patent systems and venture capital, this volume takes issue with predictions of convergence, and convincingly demonstrates the multiple paths that technologies and innovations can follow.
