Book Description

Reclaiming the Great Commission describes a biblically based model that can restore the missionary power of first-century Christianity to twenty-first century denominations and their congregations. Based on shared vision and mission, the model can guide the members of any congregation or denomination into deeper and broader evangelism, an enhanced experience of community, and a renewed hope of personal and spiritual transformation.

5 out of 5 stars THE place to start the discussion about mainline renewal.......2005-10-24

In the last fifteen years or so there have been a zillion books written about mainline renewal. Most of them were written by consultants like Lyle Schaller or academics like Will Willimon. Most of them show a lack of real world concreteness. Payne and Beazley provide an cure for that problem

They take the changes made in the ministry of the most hidebound, change resistant group in the Protestant world-the Episcopal Church-and show what they did in Texas. They deal with real world problems and real world solutions. They call the organizational structure of the church to again become responsive to the needs of local churches and communities and work to accomplish the ministry of the church instead of perpetuate the structure at any cost. The one particular tool they developed that caught my eye was Team 1000 a plan to raise $1 million yearly for church development. Also important was the reminder that some churches we start will never be self supporting, but we as a church have an obligation to support them because the ministry is the right thing to do. Further it shows how important it is to have a leader who is willing to expend his/her leadership capital to accomplish what needs to be done

I highly recomend this book for anyone who has an interest in structural reorganization of denominations, or for those who have given up on the possibility of reform within their own judicatory bodies.

4 out of 5 stars Church as mission outpost.......2005-08-19

This is a literate description of how the Anglican Church in Texas turned several hundred Churches into successful mission outposts. Well-written and helpful for the would-be mission Church.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2003-06-03

In a time of "Church Growth" gurus, books, and workshops - it is very refreshing to have a book that doesn't focus on bells and whistles and technological ways to manipulate, but calls the church back to the mission given by Christ - to go into the world with the transformative Christian faith. If only those of us in mainline denominations would be willing to lift our eyes off of agendas, useless meetings and other distactions and consider "Reclaiming the Great Commission." Mission, not maintenance, is the call of this book, bringing the focus of the church on God, people, and relationships. Shared vision founded in Biblical faith is the key for the local congregation and the larger church. I recommend this to pastors, priests, lay leaders, bishops, and all who are interested in sharing the Gospel.

1 out of 5 stars Building the church of Christ or building a denomination?.......2003-05-04

The author says the present generation church can be like the first generation church, but how can that be? The first church had 'the same' gospel, there was only 'one denomination' at that time and they were simply called Christians. There was no need for denominations in the early church because disciples all believed 'exactly the same things'. To say the present church can be like the first is to not understand the first.

The teachings in this book merely show how to run a successful corporation for that is was this present generation of many churches has become.

5 out of 5 stars Every Church Vision Should Model This Book.......2001-10-22

Our church is using this book as a model for its vision for the year 2001. Our Daughters of the King prayer group is using this book as its study for the coming year.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Cumbersome reading.......2005-10-19

The book suffers from an over-abundance of references. Let me be clear that I can appreciate it when an author cites references, but when this is done too frequently and directly in the text, it breaks up the flow and makes the reading more tedious and un-interesting. So that you understand what I am talking about, consider that the author often cites independent studies. Sounds good, but I would be happy enough to hear about the results of the study rather than be forced to read detailed information about its authors, co-authors and dates of the study directly in-line with the text. This is how the text SHOULD read: "A recent study concluded that bla, bla, bla." The study could be referenced with a numbered footnote. Instead, this author might use: "In a study conducted by Anderson et al.(2002); Smith and Rupp, 2002; and Zhu and Kraemer, 2002; (see also Appendix 2A in this book) it was shown that bla, bla, bla." After reading the first 10 chapters, I actually began to count these endless references and taking chapter 10 as an example, there are approximately 114 instances of another author being referenced by name and publication date directly in the flow of the text! I am not kidding. The reader begins to get the feeling that nothing in the book actually came from its author(s) but from the other 114 dutifully cited references. Although this is certainly not the case, I cannot overstate the degree to which this becomes distracting and makes the text read somewhat like a legal brief! Most authors use a small superscripted number to refer to either a footnote or a bibliography, but that is not this author's style and the book is definitely the worse for it. An additional un-numbered reference section, typically spanning several pages, is also found at the end of each chapter! ENOUGH with the references!

My next specific fault with the book has to do with examples. Yes, examples. I once thought that you couldn't have too many examples, but the author borders on the ridiculous with perhaps as many as 10 examples of relatively minor points! This adds an element of redundancy that bores the reader.

The text also contain minor technical errors. As an electrical engineer with actual design experience of microprocessors on the circuit-level, I only notice those that fall into my area such as the mix up of mega-bytes and giga-bytes, and technical details of systems such as RFID. More errors would likely be noticed by other readers. In fairness to the author(s), these mistakes are minor and do not detract from the point being made, but they should be corrected by the 5th edition. Are my expectations too high?

Finally, the web-site for a book is an important consideration and holds the potential to significantly enhance the learning experience. The associated website for this book contains many things but is well below average.

Overall, I would not have given the book any stars, but the rating system wouldn't let me. While up-to-date, it is expensive, full of distractions and not of the caliber to which I am accustomed. It did not meet my expectations. Other readers with whom I am familiar seem to agree that the text seems to be written more as a display of the author's undeniable academic prowess than as a vehicle for learning. Sorry, NO STARS for that!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing Great.......2001-12-05

I bought this book as requirement for an MIS class. The book has good graphics, but the authors have tried to cram in a lot of information. As a result, things have'nt been explained systematically. One has to move to a later chapter to look for things discussed earlier. The quality of writing leaves much to be desired. In a nutshell, the book is only ordinary. It is much like a glossy story book for children, certainly not worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Full of Information on Information System.......2001-08-19

If you want make a decision whether you apply a new Information System or not to your organization, buy this book. There are lots of real world examples and reasons to go to IT. It is an excellent book for all those who are in the any level of management position with little or no IT background. If you are going to develop a software product and be a multimillionaire, buy one. It will inspire you. It is also a marvelous book for IT professionals who want to know real world of business and its relationships with what they are doing. As usual, every good thing has it own short falls. This book is not organized well enough to balance with the weight of subjects it discusses. For example, Chapter 2.1 INFORMATION SYSTEMS: CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS does not have any concepts and definitions of IS. Rather, you can find them in Chapter 1 (page 17). It also contains same concepts in different places and repeat similar explanations.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best textbook!.......2001-08-09

This is one of the best book in IT Management (for upper level undergraduage or graduate level course). I have found that the book has been very updated in the pace of the current trend, and is providing one of the best and balanced treatment (for very broad field, but with fairly in-depth coverages in each critical area of IS and IT management) with the solid managerial and profound organizational groundwork. Some of the chapters that I enjoy reading is Ch.3 (Strategic Information Systems), Ch.4 (Business Process Reengineering and Information Technology), Ch.6 (Electronic Commerce), and especially Ch.12 and Ch.13 (Planning for Information Technology and Systems, Information Technology Economics) for Managing IT. My appraisal about this book is its well-balanced and insightful critiques (to rescue and enpower many of the simple and naive, or stubborn, from many of the crafty propaganda, illustions and deceptions of today's "rise-and-die-quick" empty promises and sales pictchs in this field). This is one of the main reason that I have adopted this book for my students.

Book Description

"Action inquiry" is the process of transformational learning that individuals (and even whole organizations) can undertake to better assess current dangers and opportunities, act in a timely manner, and make future visions come true. Through short stories of leadership and organizational changes in the areas of business, politics, health care, and education, this book illustrates how this process can increase personal integrity, improve relationships, and lead to company profitability and long-term success.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Unique ideas that work, but some shortcomings...........2007-02-03

ACTION-INQUIRY is a great book with lots of useful concepts. The editorial and other reviews focus on the content and I won't repeat a lot of that. However, I have some other comments to make that may be useful and I can describe my experience applying the ideas in daily life.

The authors introduce the idea that every action is an inquiry and every inquiry is an action. The premise of the book is that you need to be in inquiry in every moment at different levels to make the best choices and approach decisions with full awareness. This is a useful concept and it is illustrated throughout the book with many real-life business examples.

As a former director in a large company, I can say that these are practical ideas that if applied could be very transformational to an organization. The challenge is to really impliment them and not just pay lip service to the concepts. This must begin with the leaders. If they don't buy into the model, it will be difficult to get other people onboard, but not impossible. The book is about each individual being a change agent through action-inquiry.

What I didn't like about the book is that I found there were too many examples to illustrate the same basic concepts, there was also quite a bit of repetition of concepts and an unnecessary use of jargon where plain everyday language would have done just fine.

I think this book could have been half the length and been just as effective. I also think the author could have presented his ideas more clearly and concisely. In places, he uses different language for the various levels of inquiry and this tends to make the flow more confusing than it has to be. In the next revision, it would be good to see some of these issues addressed.

However, I still recommend this book to business and other leaders. In fact, it is useful for anyone who wants to live with more awareness and choice through tuning into various levels of inquiry in the midst of action. Basically, we are talking about taking a systems approach to life where we have practices that give us access to better quality feedback. This is the essence of the book.

4 out of 5 stars "Action inquiry" is the process of transformational learning .......2005-08-05

Action Inquiry offers a fresh approach to helping individuals and organizations learn in the midst of the cut and thrust of daily action. Bill Torbert and Associates detail a highly accessible process for transforming power into action. Through real-life examples, they illustrate how action inquiry increases personal integrity, relational mutuality, company profitability, and long-term organizational and environmental sustainability.

5 out of 5 stars The Art and Science of Transformational Leadership.......2004-08-02

Does everyone in your organization do the best they can, as they see it, yet the organization still fails to achieve its desired results? Action Inquiry shows why this often happens and how to convert this seeming paradox into a transformational change, taking everyone and the organization to the next level of performance.

Whether we look at the level of the individual, project, organization, network, or society, we each follow a path of development over time. For example, I think about the world in a different way today than I did when I was 10, 20 or 30. Likewise, my organization sees the world different after 10 years of success than we did as a startup. Based on over forty years of observation in the field, Bill Torbert and his associates find that we often get stuck in early levels of understanding of the world, even as we grow older. While it's obvious that it is appropriate to act like a teenager when you are 16 and not when you are 30, when we apply this same developmental logic to organizational life, the authors find that most organizations get stuck in early levels of development (like the teenager) that were appropriate in the first years and not in later years.

To show us what can be done about this and its implications, the authors provide many examples of how the action inquiry approach helped these individuals and organizations grow to the next level, taking on a broader understanding of the reality that faced them, which led to greater value being created for all.

We can see that the evidence is mounting: those leaders who understand and work with an action inquiry approach to leadership and development create significantly more value for their organizations in the short term for the long term, sustainably. Based on rigorous theory and scientific evidence, this is the art and science of transformational leadership for leaders who can handle the truth.

Book Description

Because they're doing the day-to-day work, front-line employees see many problems and opportunities their managers don't. But most organizations fail to realize this potentially extraordinary source of revenue-enhancing ideas. The authors of "Ideas Are Free use real-world examples from their work with hundreds of organizations to show how to exploit the virtually free, perpetually renewable resource of employee ideas. The book explains how sustainable competitive advantages in areas ranging from productivity and responsiveness to cost reduction and quality assurance are only possible with the attention to detail that comes from getting and implementing large numbers of ideas from employees. Subjects include how to make ideas part of everyone's job, how to set up and run an effective process for handling ideas, how to help people come up with more and better ideas, and how a strong flow of ideas can have a profound impact on an organization's culture.

Stemming from research in their previous book, Managing for Excellence, David Bradford of Stanford University and Allan Cohen of Babson College have developed a new "leadership system" based on reciprocal behavior between managers and subordinates. In Power Up: Transforming Organizations Through Shared Leadership, they diagram this model and show corporations how to adopt it. Blasting the fundamental assumption that leaders are responsible for everything within a company (and any unit therein), they suggest that management actually is the responsibility of everyone and offer ways to encourage such behavior even when resistance exists.

Book Description

"Cohen and Bradford give both leaders and followers the tangible tools they need to create high performance. Their transformational leadership system is both sophisticated enough to capture the realities of life in today's organizations and simple enough to be immediately useful to managers in any part of the world. This book will be read, re-read, and sent to bosses everywhere."--Rosabeth Moss Kanter, author of Rosabeth Moss Kanter on the Frontiers of Management

"In Power Up, Bradford and Cohen not only convincingly argue the benefits of leading by building a shared responsibility team, they also describe in detail how to do it. Loaded with many powerful examples and detailed cases that bring their concepts to life, this book will inspire any leader."--Jerry Porras, coauthor of Built to Last and Lane Professor of Organizational Behavior and Change, Stanford Business School

"Traditional assumptions about the roles of managers and subordinates are barriers to long-range success . . . Bradford and Cohen provide practical insights into how to transform the leadership systems of modern business organizations, and these insights should be shared among employees and managers at all levels."--Yotaro Kobayashi Chairman and CEO, Fuji-Xerox

"Post-heroic leadership and shared responsibility teams have made a big difference in how we operate at Autodesk. Power Up is critical reading for every manager in high-tech." --Carol Bartz President and CEO, Autodesk

"Power Up's message is clear: in today's business arena, global players must rely on shared leadership, not a single voice. Post-heroic leaders place responsibility where the knowledge is: at every level. Siemens is committed to this new way of working."--Dr. Heinrich von Pierer President and CEO, Siemens

Countless articles and books have called for an end to "heroic," command-and-control management. In principle, at least, business has heeded that call. Acknowledging the need for employee leadership and shared responsibility, companies worldwide have invested heavily in every variety of employee-empowerment program. Yet, such reform efforts seldom have any lasting effect, and managers and subordinates quickly slip back into old follow-the-leader patterns of thinking and behaving.

Does this mean that the skeptics were right all along? Are participative management, self-directed work teams, and other popular empowerment programs just part of a futile effort to change "human nature"? Not at all, say David L. Bradford and Allan R. Cohen in this practical follow-up to their international bestsellers Managing for Excellence and Influence Without Authority. They show conclusively that to believe this grossly underestimates human capabilities and sacrifices any chance for success in today's fiercely competitive global marketplace.

Drawing upon close observation of successful leaders and followers, Bradford and Cohen reconceptualize shared leadership to show how it requires tough and decisive behavior from managers and those who report to them. The authors provide a blueprint for making it work personally and in your organization, whatever your position or formal power.

Exercising their critically acclaimed talent for translating complex concepts into actionable advice and guidance, they show how to create a dynamic, supercharged organizational culture of shared responsibility. Using many real-life examples and vignettes, the authors reveal the mind-traps that keep organizations locked into outmoded concepts of leadership. A pathbreaking contribution to the new leadership from two pioneers in the field, Power Up arms managers with the concepts and tools to release the potential of employees for greater heights of productivity and performance.

5 out of 5 stars God is in the details and this book captures the key ones.......2004-03-17

I am biased in my report in that I know the book intimately. I can only say that I am aware of no other leadership book that has captured the correct essence of where human leadership is and where it could go.

Yes, read the stories, and the author's words, but I challenge you to look beyond all that they have thankfully given us as simple stories and realize the potential of the type of leadership that they call post-heroic leadership. Forget the label of this leadership they communicate and instead listen to underlying message of Power Up.

John P. Kotter once wrote a poem that goes something like this..."beyond the yellow brick road of naiveté, past the muggers land of cynicism, there lies a narrow path whose entrance is hard to find and poorly lit. Once found staying on such a path is even harder. Undertaking such a path is a moral undertaking. We need many more to take such a path...many, many more." Power Up describes a way that might help you see your way down your own path better and a way that is good for all mankind.

I have always said that this book will never be a best seller, because that just means that a lot of people read it, but I believe that hundreds of thousands of years from now it will still be revered as a great work in promoting the understanding of improving human leadership. It will get there I think, because of those few souls who read it and understand.

I will fight by your side if your purpose is good, and I follow you if your path is pure.

Thundering Eagle

1 out of 5 stars ugh!.......2002-02-07

This book is one of the worst business books I have ever read. The authors are clearly on the gravy train trying to sweep up some more consultancy dollars.

This book basically breaks leadership up into two schools, the heroic school and the post-heroic school. The way it works is really simple. Anything bad, belongs in the heroic school, and anything good is post-heroic! WOW! This book is very one-sided and does not even try to entertain the notion that the most effective style of leadership can vary depending upon the situation. It continuously hammers home a certain style of leadership never exploring the situations where different approaches are effective.

I strongly recommend that if one wants to learn and think about leadership, read about leaders!....and by the way, the kind of leaders that we all admire do not even fit into this post-heroic category! This idealistic kind of approach recommended by academics lacks practical real-world substance, and only has value in a classroom.

I am considering using this book to prop up my dining table!

4 out of 5 stars Can't be this simple?.......2001-09-26

The authors make the impossible seem very possible in this excellent book. The differences between heroic and post-heroic leadership is well defined through stories involving real people. Can an organization switch from heroic to post-heroic leadership, sure, but it is not easy. Somehow this book and its ideas make that ideal a bit more reasonable. Only for managers and leaders who are ready to go out on a limb and turn everything they thought they knew upside down. Good luck.

        Product Description

The authors have provided us a practical guide on how to transform the antisocial behavior of emotionally disturbed and behavior-disordered children and youth into prosocial behavior. They do this through what they call Transformation Education, an organizational philosophy designed to transform a child's world-view through changing how the staff, not the children, think and act. This way of thinking is designed to be congruent with the mission of child-serving organizations. It also employs the latest understanding of how the brain operates and uses the understanding to create a brain compatible organizational culture.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Transforming Church Boards- An Idea Whose Time Has Come.......2007-02-06

Having been in the ministry for more than forty years I have found the book Transforming Church Boards into communities of spiritual leaders an idea whose time has come. Though the idea is not new-it is what the early church was all about-it is something that can transform the culture of the congregation because influence flows downhill.

4 out of 5 stars A pragmatic and transforming process of new thinking........1998-10-11

Charles M. Olsen awakens new thinking for the Church's traditional mode of organizational operation. He sees the primary objective of a church board doing its necessary business, but in a format that is fresh and new. Leadership is encouraged to take on a new objective, that of becoming a core of Spiritual leaders within the body of people for whom and with whom it is making decisions, that is, the congregation. He proposes that the format of worship become the church board's business format. Devotions, the traditional meeting opener, becomes a brief worship service that sets the mood. Worship then continues throughout the meeting. Committee reports are transformed into an offering. Prayers, seeking God's discernment on issues, are interspersed throughout the meeting. Closings become a blessing and an encouragement as guidance for the journey that lies ahead.

If there is a criticism of this writing it is the redundance of certain thoughts. Some work could be done, in a revision, to improve the flow of the words. On the other hand, these recommendations become secondary to the theme and its potential effectiveness as it is outlined by the author.
