This is the "Bible" for NPD professionals. An excellent addition to the guides by Cooper and Crawford.
PDMA - Handbook for new product development.......2007-01-12
Haven't read from cover to cover, but proving to be an excellent reference. Good examples from industry reinforce key messages. Haven't learnt anything groundbreakingly new, but it has been a good confirmation or fine-tuning reference when needed.
Product Marketing Professionals - BUY THIS BOOK!.......2002-03-14
The PDMA Handbook is one of those rare and valuable books that characterizes a "body of knowledge" for a professional discipline. It was produced by the preeminent industry organization for New Product Development (NPD) professionals, the PDMA .... This text describes current, best practices in NPD and includes contributions from knowledge leaders in academia, consulting, and industry practice. If you are a CEO, COO, CTO, Marketing Manager, Product Manager, Product Planner, Engineering Manager, Project Manager, Program Manager, or any other professional involved in new product development (especially for technically complex products like hardware and software) you really need this book.
Product Managers (should) perform the nitty, gritty, roll-your-sleeves-up: opportunity analysis, business case formulation, and requirements management for new products. Research shows that judicious performance of this critical pre-work is a key determinant in the ultimate market success of new products and is usually performed inadequately. Unfortunately, most professionals in such roles have had no formal training beyond an MBA (sometimes). The PDMA Handbook provides a comprehensive treatment of virtually all the subject areas new product development (business) managers need to understand to drive the success of their endeavors. Want to know the key success factors for new products, understand value proposition, differentiation, features vs. benefits, uniqueness, sustainable competitive advantage, the fuzzy front end, pipeline management, how to plan a new product launch, manage a product portfolio, and more? This is the book you need. The PDMA Handbook is the Gray's Anatomy of product management. Buy it and READ it at least twice.
This book should have been read when it was published!.......2001-08-19
This book seem to be written by persons who really know what NPD (or NPI) really is. All those described mistakes possible to be done is made by me during last five years...this is a good book.
The area of NPD is large. Luckily people in PDMA have come to the right conclution: it is not possible for one person to handle the whole area throughly. Every chapter in this book is written by expert on his/her own area. Unfortunately the maximum size of one book restricts the possible space per one writer to include only the most vital parts into this book.
To whom I can recommend this book? --- To anyone who will to increase his/her own scope of NPD and especially to a person who already have gained some experience on this field and is able to compare his/her own experiece to this book.
Wonderful!.......2000-02-02
I purchased the PDMA Handbook on the strength of a review and have been very glad I did so. After quoting a few passage to my staff they began to borrow it, and now the Handbook has made the rounds of the office. It is worn and dog-eared, and quoted from on a daily basis.
The message of "treating each other with respect and dignity" by author Holahan et al has really struck a chord around here. Many of us believe she must be staunch Christian, one who lives her faith on a daily basis.
The PDMA Handbook has provided guidance in mapping out strategies for new services we hope to bring to market as well as the way our organization is managed. It has changed the way we do business and the way we percieve the world.

Book Description
Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get a Life
This is not your typical self-help book. You won't find any motivational platitudes or cute business parables here. This is more of a "get off your butt and get to work" approach that can help you achieve more success, make more money, improve your business, and have more fun.
Larry Winget doesn't pull any punches here. He believes that business gets better when businesspeople get better through personal growth. And it works the same way in your personal life-husbands and wives improve each other when they improve themselves, and kids improve when their parents do. In other words, everything in life gets better when you get better, and nothing gets better until you get better.
This book can make you better, but it will probably tick you off. Winget is direct, caustic, and controversial. You won't like or agree with everything he has to say. Yet his advice is full of wisdom and truth that can't easily be argued with.
Words from Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get a Life that prove that this book is anything but typical:
"If you don't have much going wrong in your life, then you don't have much going on in your life."
"When you work, work! When you play, play! Don't mix the two."
"What you think about, talk about, and do something about is what comes about."
"When it quits being fun-quit."
"Time management is a joke."
And that's just the beginning!

Practical steps to take control of your life and get results
He might seem harsh from time to time, but Larry Winget's unique approach to personal development-combining blunt truth with irreverent humor-is really based on love of self and love of others. Life is serious, but that doesn't mean we should always take it so seriously. Larry's message is simple: life isn't as complicated as it seems and most people would find more success, and more happiness, in their lives if they'd do a few simple things-take responsibility for their actions, lighten up, and start doing the right things instead of the wrong things. By forcing readers to look truthfully at their own lives, this refreshingly honest approach to self-improvement leaves readers nowhere to turn but the mirror-and proves that when we stop making excuses we start succeeding.
Larry Winget (Paradise Valley, AZ) is one of the most successful professional speakers in America. He is known as the Pitbull of Personal Development(TM), speaking worldwide to corporations and associations over one hundred times per year, delivering hardcore self-help that's funny.

Inspirational!.......2007-10-08
This book is fantastic! I love to listen to audio books on the way to work. A good audio book almost makes you want to get stuck in traffic!
Of course, if you listen to Larry Winget, you will find out that the traffic jam is your fault!! Shut up! Stop complaining about the traffic jam! Get a life! If you didn't want to be stuck in traffic jams on the way to work than you should write entire books based on one sentence and make a great living off it! Also, trumpet your seminars from the tallest buildings or thickest books or most annoying audio books to get interest and tour, tour, tour!
That's true! Listen, if you don't want to buy this book, let me sum up what you need to do. Larry's right. Shut up. Not making it? Not paying the bills? House not big enough? Don't hate. Find out what your skills are and see how that can make you money and bust your butt. I have two start-up businesses that may go nowhere but sitting and watching idiotic televion won't improve my lifestyle, I guarantee it. Hey, I did it! And without insulting you! Just go do it. And Larry, stop contributing to global warming with all that hot air. Just give your seminars and don't hate. That includes the fat people you hate so much. I'm not fat but I'm not bigoted against them as you say you are.
Questionable Advice.......2007-10-04
I like Winget's approach -- we all need a kick in the butt once in awhile, but his information is questionable in too many areas.
On Health: Winget insists all physical problems are our own fault. I agree with the theory, but it shouldn't be presented as a blanket statement. My wife was born with a defective heart and has to live with the problem. How did she "create" that?
On Stress: Winget tells us that stress happens when we know the right thing to do and choose to do the wrong thing. Excuse me, but how does that apply to being caught behind a traffic accident on the way to work, a loss of faith, the death of a loved one . . . what are the "right" choices to make when you come home to find you've been robbed?
On Relationships: Winget, on his second marriage and an admitted adulterer (with an adultress as a wife) claims he always likes his wife but doesn't always love her. I don't know what planet he's living on. I've been with my wife for thirty years and, although we don't always like each other, we've never doubted our love for each other.
Those are just a few of the problems I have with this otherwise entertaining book. It's a good read, and makes you take a look at yourself, but please don't embrace it as your new bible. The information is too simplistic and general.
Kick in the butt!.......2007-09-23
I love this book! He has a very direct and no nonsense method for delivering the message about getting it done. You may wince while reading some sections of this book because of the truth of it.
Standard Material, Different Approach.......2007-09-10
Larry Winget is terrific. He's in-your-face and irreverant (which, to me, comes across as funny). If you're a self-improvement junkie, however, you'll recognize literally everything in this book as originally coming from another source -- everyone from Buddah to Wayne Dyer to Julius Fast. Larry Winget is Tony Robbins with a different physical image and approach, although both are enthusiastic, funny, entertaining, and full of information.
As a self-improvement junkie for over forty years, I don't agree with everything Winget says. He's sure he's right and I'm sure he's wrong. My biggest argument concerns the idea that we create every medical issue we have. I've heard this one many times before . . . all from self-improvement gurus who have never really been sick a day in their lives. Yes, I agree that people can create ulcers and migranes and even cancer, but I'd like to ask Mr. Winget and the rest of the "experts" how my husband manifested his bayonet wound from Vietnam, how I created the extra heart nerve bundle I was born with, or how Michael J. Fox (great attitude, careful with his health) caused Parkinson's Disease. Or how the always-upbeat, active, and cautious Luciano Pavarotti created pancreatic cancer. Unlike Winget, I believe some things do Just Happen. It's hard for me to believe my daughter's seat belt magically released during an auto accident, leaving her with a concussion, because she had a bad attitude.
Aside from a few personal problems such as the health issue, this book will get you motivated. But once you're motivated, you need to be able to use that motivation or you'll just be enthusiastic for awhile and then fall back into your old routine. Even Winget declares that you have to know what you want and have a plan before getting all fired up.
For those who have run up against this problem in the past, I suggest the audiobook "Before You Hire A Life Coach . . . Heal Your Problems With Pyramid Problem Solving." Pyramid Problem Solving will (finally!) lead you to what you honestly want, bottom line. It does not stop with what you think you want, what you wanted ten years ago, what someone else has convinced you that you want, or what you think you should want. It gets right to the bottom, THEN you can use motivational material and finally find success.
I wish everyone who reads this book (or any other self-help material) all the success in the world. It's taken me a long time (and a lot of energy and money) to finally get to my own honest "This Is What I Want," and I'm in my fifties.
More yelling from Larry.......2007-08-16
This is a very honest, in your face book. I liked it alot. You have to like getting yelled at though. The author puts it right up there for you to understand. There are no doubts where the guy is coming from: Either you do what you already know what needs to be done, or you don't. If you don't care enough to put in the effort, don't bother whining because NOBODY cares. There you go...I just saved you $10.00.
Book Description
In the Simplicity Survival Handbook: 32 Ways To Do Less and Accomplish More, Bill Jensen, author of the best-selling Simplicity, offers step-by-step techniques to running your business more successfully and getting more accomplished in a shorter amount of time. In today's extremely fast-paced world, Jensen's user-friendly-and often hilarious-survival guide is an indispensable guide to workplace survival.
In a world of more-better-faster, the challenges and stresses in the workplace have never been greater. The new rules seem to be too much to do and not enough time. Time is at a premium and the pace is always increasing. And in an economy where worker talent (things like know-how, energy, attention, commitment, and creativity) is at a premium, everyone is trying to maximize personal productivity.
In The Simplicity Survival Handbook, Jensen offers the antidote you're seeking: a practical guide to doing less in a world of more. He also demonstrates how to make your time count. A few of the daily struggles that Jensen addresses include how to:
* Deal with Bosses Who Don't Get It
* Delete 75% of Your Emails
* Clarify Your Goals More Quickly
* Decide: Stay or Go
From "How to Write Shorter Emails for Better Results" to "How to Use Your Mentor to Help You Do Less," Jensen offers proven strategies for communicating more effectively, setting priorities, and balancing the competing demands on your time, while avoiding the time-sinkers. He also takes on corporate foolishness, walking you through how to be more productive and take greater control of your workday and, by extension, your life. The Simplicity Survival Handbook is an indispensable tool for anyone struggling to succeed in today's take-no-prisoners business climate.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book to save time.......2006-12-23
This is a must read for anyone who uses a computer for their work. The book suggests the reader skip to the summary in the back and save even more time by not reading the book - great idea. Since what Bill Jensen has to say can be said in so few words because he know what he wants to say, how he feels about it and what he wants the read to do.
Read it or at least the summary; then just hand it to a co-worked, family member or anyone you just want to help out.
I have deleted more e-mails without opening them then ever in my life. Since I read this book it has handed back hours a day to me that I was wasting on work and e-mails.
The original "Simplicity" is a must-read companion.......2005-09-26
Bill Jensen's ideas and tactics have crystallized my ability to be effective. I read "The Simplicity Survival Handbook" before reading Jensen's original "Simplicity", and for me, "Simplicity" is superior because (1) it explains the rationale behind Jensen's ideas and (2) offers invaluable guidance on effective presentations. "The Simplicity Survival Handbook" 's examples were not as helpful to me as the initial wisdom and suggestions in "Simplicity". Read them both!
WOW! Buckle your Seat Belts. .......2005-05-13
What I like about this biz book:
1) Its fun and challenging "If your boss doesn't get it, and has a high likelihood of never getting it... time to say "goodbye". Pretty simple right?
2) Attitude of "You don't have to be a victim of corporate crap"... reminds me of a refrain I have heard from my husband when he talks about his day job "They can't even run their own life, I will be damned it they run mine"
3) Respect yourself more. Your time is valuable. Push back.
4) The complexity starts from within. From within my own company, within myself.
The How To Section(s)
Email
Scan incoming subject and author, if not relevant hit "delete"
Scan email for 1) action to take 2) deadline date.
In sending messages use the 3"x5" space constaint.
If it is simplier it is more likely to be done. Make it easy.
Remember the key: what do you want them to know, feel and do!
Presentations:
Turn the one point you want people to know into a question. Provoke conversations. Give everyone handouts. Use of Stories is a good thing.
1 hour presentation = 20 slides MAX!
Meetings Big Idea!! When you agree to chair a meeting approachit as if you have just been handed a portion of someones life. Because you have. Run a meeting like one that you wish you had been invited for.
Helpful hints 1) get only the important people 2) get the right people 3) define what success looks like 4) Mentally see the successful meeting 5) Put the objective of the meeting up front
6) Be passionate about the people and reason of the meeting.
Fix my job......please!.......2004-05-15
With a title like this, Jensen's book should be flying off the shelf. I know it caught my eye when I first saw it. We all want to "do" less and "accomplish" more and there are some excellent ideas in this book to help you do just that.
Nothing in this book is easy, though. Someone as inclined to follow the rules like myself will find it difficult, if not impossible, to implement the more demanding recommendations. This is a shame, as these people are those who would probably benefit the most.
Even if you don't think of yourself as a rabble-rouser, you should still read this book and take heart that there are some possible methods of extracting yourself from business situations that leave you feeling busy, but not very productive. There are ways of escaping the bureaucracy and yet keep your job.
The cutest, yet still effective, idea in the book is the "Less-O-Meter" associated with each chapter. These graphical gauges give you an "at a glance" reading on how much Courage you will need to put this tip in place, how difficult it can be and the possible yield to your productivity and happiness.
You may be ready to take on your whole company and engage in full-scale "pushback", but implementing even one idea from this book could do a world of good for you, your job and your career, while helping your company, as well.
Excellent Book.......2004-04-03
I think this book is the best book ever written for dealing with the business world today. I feel like it was written for me. I wish I had access to this book 5 years ago, I could have used it.
Thank you for your contributions for helping to make a healthier more informed work environment and employee for those who take a long time to get there.

To paraphrase the Rolling Stones, you might not always get what you want from this short 'n' sweet little guidebook on strategic thinking and planning, but you just might get what you need. That would include concise and handy visual and verbal tips on gathering and analyzing key information, setting short- and long-term objectives, developing your team leadership skills, predicting future trends, and maintaining a flexible approach throughout. It also covers the essential tools of strategic management, from SWOT (strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats) analysis and feasibility studies to budgeting forecasts and contingency plans. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance--say, how to do strategic thinking in a particular field, like biotechnology, or a particular division, like human resources--you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basic steps of strategic planning, both individually and in a group setting, this may do you just fine.
It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

Customer Reviews:
Basic, essential, and very well-presented.......2007-06-26
During a recent business trip, I stopped by an airport store and saw a display of several volumes of the "Essential Managers" series. I purchased this one as well as John Seymour and Martin Shervington's Maximizing Performance, read both while en route home and was surprised, frankly, to find each to be remarkably comprehensive within a 69-page narrative. Obviously, the subject of strategic thinking is vast and complicated. No single book could possibly cover everything, nor do Bruce and Langdon make any such claim. What they offer is a focus on fundamentals, as do the volumes that comprise the Harvard Business Essentials series.
First, Bruce and Langdon share their definition of strategy, examine the strategic process, suggest how to balance pursuit of both short- and long-term goals, prepare for strategic success, and anticipate what may lie ahead. Next, they explain how to analyze the given situation in terms of influences, customers, competition, and the given organization's available resources (e.g. the skills and capabilities of its people). Then Bruce and Langdon focus on the strategic planning process itself (definition of purpose, determination of competitive advantage, setting of operational boundaries, selection of points of emphasis, and estimation of probable costs of implementation. They conclude with a series of observations and suggestions concerning strategy implementation.
As I read this book, I was again reminded of Oliver Wendell Holmes' comment, "I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity." To me, that comment suggests the essential value of the "Essential Managers" series, at least of the two volumes I have read thus far. Here's another point. What Bruce and Langdon have to say about the fundamentals of strategic thinking is consistent with what other experts on the subject suggest, notably Peter Drucker, Henry Mintzberg, and Michael Porter. As I read this book, I was also reminded of what Drucker observed in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."
However different they may be in every other respect, all under-performing organizations fail to formulate an appropriate strategy and/or do not implement it effectively. One key word is "appropriate" because a strategy that was appropriate only a few years ago (or yesterday) may no longer be appropriate now. Another other key word is "effectively." With all due respect to the importance of knowing what to do and how to do it, former Texas football coach Darrell Royal is right: "potential" means "you ain't done it yet." Credit Andy Bruce and Ken Langdon with providing a remarkably comprehensive discussion of what to do and how to do it. It remains for those who read their book to apply what they have learned.
I wish I had this book when I was a young corporate rat........2001-03-13
I bought this book actually out of curiosity. It was pocket-size, and also visually very appealing. After perusing it, I have this feeling that this book is more intended for very young executives and/or new supervisors.
In terms of basic steps, the book is just fine. In a nutshell, there are some two dozen of "strategic thinking" topics, which have been artfully rolled into the 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with colurful boxed tips, 101 of them to be exact. It is designed for easy reading. There is even a simple but fun test at the end pages.
Highly recommended for all beginners into the management field, as well as for older kids, who wants to learn how to think strategically. I wish I had this book when I was a young corporate rat.
For a deeper treatment on the subject, I would suggest a quick browse of books in my Strategic Thinking Bookshelf (listmania).

Refreshing, insightful & entertaining read!.......2007-09-30
"The Power of Charm" shows you how to create "extraordinary rapport" that makes other people feel exceptional. Authors Brian Tracy and Ron Arden contend that "the most valuable commodity in the world isn't gold or diamonds-- it's charm."
The authors suggest that charm is a proven method for interacting with people that makes them open to you and receptive to your message. As a result, they're more likely to have personal and business relationships with you, and think of you in positive terms. Your reputation, how people think and act towards you is your most valuable personal and professional asset.
From start to finish, this book is entertaining and fun to read. The tone is always upbeat and optimistic -- not like etiquette or manners books that point fingers and shame you into compliance. You'll find yourself smiling and laughing as you read this book, especially the little personal stories and insights that the authors share. There are also some sly techniques for getting someone's attention (such as the "flick technique") that you probably haven't considered before. I found myself stepping back from the text, and thinking about my own communication and interaction style.
Some parts of this book are so awesome that I memorized them. For instance, the five ways to boost another person's self-esteem--- this is something I used at the gym today (mentally recalling all five points) when I was struggling to make a good impression on someone.
The book includes:
Five ways to boost another person's self-esteem
Four keys for effective listening
Why women are better listeners then men
How to charm a woman by meeting her three core emotional needs
How to charm the socks off a man in conversation
Why looking into a man's eyes (& finding him valuable & important) is irresistible
How to change the way you act (by changing the way you think)
8 signals for creating rapport (and much, much more)
I loved reading `The Power of Charm" and would recommend this book to anyone who wants to brush up on their interpersonal skills. If you really want to connect with people on a deeper level (and who doesn't?) this book is for you.
I'd also recommend this book for anyone who is shy, lonely, looking for love, suffers from a broken heart or failed relationships. The book would also be helpful to anyone who comes across as harsh, overbearing or insensitive. Whatever your disposition, the gentle and lighthearted nature of this book will win you over, and help you realize that change is possible, one small step at a time. Yes, this book has the power to transform your life-- but only if you read it and apply what it says.
The reviews posted here on Amazon don't give the book justice--and I don't understand why anyone would badmouth this gem of book. "The Power of Charm" is a heartwarming book that made me smile from ear to ear.
An effective dose to enhance your charm real quick.......2007-09-17
I agree with the positive reviews that this book really helps. I concur with those negative reviews that there is nothing new in this book, especially to readers who had read three or more books on communication. However, I am obliged to rate it a four star for the authors excellence to vividly present so much useful stuff in only 134 pages. Very concise and definitely helpful! A good reminder/shortcut for veteran readers and communicators as well. The special bonus section "The Power of Charm on the Telephone" is for sure a bonus. Highly recommended!
p.s. Below please find some of those IMHO not so common sense passages for your reference.
The flick suggests the depth of your involvement with the person and in what she or he is saying.....Flicking is the simple act of shifting your gaze from one person's eyes to the other while you are listening......create a triangle of flicks between his eyes and lips, making her eye contact very intimate and very sensual. Pg 42
Smiles that appear genuine don't switch off abruptly. Real smiles seem to linger for a moment or two. A smile that doesn't linger really isn't a smile. Pg 73
The best way to create a feeling, if you have it not, is to act on every occasion where that feeling is desirable as if you had it already, and you soon will have. - Aristotle pg 78
The true spirit of conversation consists more in bringing out the cleverness of others than in showing a great deal of it yourself. - La Bruyere pg 104
Have you ever tried to talk with others only to find yourself out of step with their mood?...You have to find a way to mesh gears, to make sure that you and the other person are in sync, so that no matter how different you are, you can create rapport....mirroring and matching. Pg 119
Don't forget, a smile can be heard and felt in your voice on the phone. The listener might not smile, but you must! Pg 130
The Power of Charm.......2007-07-29
This is another mind enhancing book that makes you want to be better at what you need to do. But it's been written by several other authors already with different titles. Smile, nod and make eye contact. OK, borrow someone elses to read and save the bucks.
Excellent.......2007-06-14
This is the only charm book you'll ever need. It's a very fast read, which is great, because you can read it, learn the techniques, and start applying them immediately.
This is truly a must have.
Not Tracy's best.. An "OK" book.......2007-05-30
I usually read everything from Brian Tracy. His books have a lot of interesting stories to illustrate his points and they give the reader the impression that some research time has gone into them. "The Power of Charm", however, leaves the reader with a feeling that not a lot of time went into the writing of this book. The book does have some good ideas and for anyone that has not read Dale Carnegie's books or many others on the topic of relationships, this might be a good book for you to pick up. For others, check out many other books by Tracy that have a lot more meat in them.

Good Value For Time Invested in reading.......2006-12-29
If you're a startup or an entrepreneur...you have very little time and/or few sources of quality information.
This book gives you the big picture, it also gives you many details that are hard to get...it's the best investment you can make with your time.
Reads like a great novel for the Entrepreneur.......2006-10-05
If you are like me, you read a lot of books to help you become a better Entrepreneur, looking for those tasty morsels that give you ideas or methods to succeed in growing your business.
This books is one of the few of its kind that I could not put down. Each section was interesting and most were relevant. I am sick of reading about pure high tech and software only plays. This book is not only very educational, it is a reference manual that never leaves my desk. The Database of funding sources is invaluable.
Excellence in Grwoing companeis.......2006-04-13
Whether you are a start-up, growing a business or just interested in business reading, Kenneth H.Marks provides a clear insight into topics and issues required by any business person. Thought I understood finance until I read this book and located gaping holes in my understanding. Would recommend this book for any business course- it fills in the knowledge gaps that business schools leave.
This handbook should be on every entrepreneur's bookshelf.......2005-10-19
This book is truly incredible! As the co-owner of a full service commercial finance intermediary firm, we are always looking for valuable and concise resources to draw upon for in-depth information regarding the very vast world of corporate finance. This book is it. It doesn't matter if you are an entrepreneur, student, or financial professional, this book covers every aspect of corporate financing options. I have used the "Financing Source Directory" numerous times to locate finance companies based on area of expertise and required funding. Our job as financial intermediaries is to not only educate our clients based on the best source of financing according to their respective needs but to also have a vast database of finance professionals to call upon in order to successfully facilitate our clients funding requirements. The "Financing Source Directory" and the material in this book provide just that and more. The investment price for the book is worth the directory alone. If you're trying to locate funds for your company or if you would like to have a better understanding of how to finance a growing organization, go buy this book.

Excellent business book!.......2007-05-08
This is an excellent resource book for the small business owner. I highly recommend it to anyone who intends to grow their small business!
Elementary, No Impact.......2007-04-27
This book, while giving a decent overview of practices that are known to be effective, does not provide "how to be a shining star" or how to ACTUALLY grow beyond just being a simple start-up.
This book is elementary level, at best. The core concepts here are commonly, well-known and easily visible in the world of business from your neighbor's convenient store to your local Wal*Mart.
Don't clutter your bookshelf.
Has a great message for wanta-be entrepreneurs to read and hear........2006-08-24
I'm a SCORE counselor and the mission of SCORE is to help wanta-be entrepreneurs and actual small business owners either successfully start a business or maintain/grow an existing business. Typically "clients" come in to the face-to-face counseling sessions with questions, lots of questions. If the client is a wanta-be entrepreneur, then one of my first questions is: Have you written a business plan? If the client is a small business owner and having problems or is interested in growth, then one of my first questions is: How does this relate to your business plan? Interestingly, both types of clients usually answer that they don't have a business plan, or at least they don't have a written business plan.
Mr. Little's book covers what I have to tell my SCORE clients when they tell me they don't have a business plan or don't use a business plan. It sure would be nice if I could just hand the clients Little's book and call it an evening. However, the clients probably prefer to hear it from me verbally instead of having to read it first.
Wanta-be entrepreneurs and actual small business owners must:
1. Establish and maintain a strong sense of purpose behind their idea or business
2. Research, analyze and fully understand the industry in which their business operates and the market in which it serves and competes
3. Write a sound business plan, and use it to operate the business
4. Be customer-centric, i.e. stay in touch with the customers, their wants and their needs
5. Systematize operations, planning, and use technology whenever possible
6. Build a team of good people to run the business
7. Be something of a visionary so the business can prosper (everything gets old that stays the same for long)
By getting this book and reading it you will see the importance of writing a sound business plan and using it to manage and grow a successful small business. The "rules" mentioned are supported by real-world stories and provide insight into what makes business work. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone involved in small business strategy. A must read! Get it, and prosper.
I'm not so sure the appendix material was relevant or necessary. I can't say I would have liked the book better without it, but I saw no point in including it. There is a fair amount written about personality types, and which personalities are more included to be entrepreneurs versus being W-2 employees. I think it is a shame that stereotypes are created since those classifications seem to keep many people from ever trying to be an entrepreneur.
Down to Earth. easy to use information.......2005-12-02
I attended Steven's seminar in Greenville, SC and found him to be very knowledgable on the subject of small business growth. Small business (less than 500 employees in the eyes of the SBA) is the backbone of the country and more and more are failing each day. I found this information to be very clear and easy to read- helpful to me even though I have an MBA. This book is highly recommended and should be a part of your business library!
Good title - book falls flat on its face........2005-07-21
Title is good for the author. For the customer, you, not. Buyer beware.

The Handbook of Large Group Methods.......2007-09-12
Trust Alban and Bunker to use their social science prowess and rich professional experiences to create an eminently pragmatic handbook for leaders of systems change. To their credit, the entire construction of the book also employs the very principles espoused by the contributors: inclusion of stakeholders, engagement of multiple perspectives, search for common ground, transparency, and appreciation for diversity. After soliciting cases from around the world, the authors organized them into helpful categories of interventions around "six challenges for the 21st century" and added their views on the issues created by those challenges. These chapter inputs are perfect executive summaries for clients who are mired in these dilemmas daily and are looking for solutions and they will help introduce the large group engagement methods the consultant is offering. Also invaluable is the authors' matrix of each case that delineates the organizational sector, the situation addressed, and the methods used--truly makes the text handy.
Although the book stands on its own merits for the sophisticated organization consultant, reading their previous Large Group Interventions (Jossey Bass, 1997) would give the appropriate context for the creative adaptations of the original methods that their latest book so well describes. The Handbook has not only added new methods (Appreciative Inquiry Summit, World Café and AmericaSpeaks) but, more importantly, it describes combinations of traditional methods along with new twists which are thoroughly described. Appropriately, there is a greater reliance on engagement principles for a change process instead of previously prescribed recipes for events in their prior book.
The consultant contributors have been generous with details, for the most part, so that seasoned organization development consultants will feel comfortable employing these tested methods of engagement. On the other hand, there also could also be a warning sticker that reads: "Don't Try This Alone in your Ballroom!" because much of the success comes with years of experience working with diverse groups and learning what doesn't work. Partnering with such experts is the wisest way to dive into whole system change.
As a trainer of large group principles, I particularly appreciated the enhancement tools this handbook describes--Polarity Mapping (B. Johnson), Gestalt therapy, coaching theory, using professional actors for storytelling, graphic facilitation and more. I look forward to the 2017 iteration Bunker and Alban offer to keep us on our toes!

Carlotta Tyler, OD Consultant and Executive Coach.......2007-03-18
This Handbook is a valuable, broad scope look at public and private sector systems currently engaged in change iniatitives around the world. Relatively free of jargon and untried theories, these field-tested case studies will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers from organization leaders and HR professionals to business school students. I came away with some important new ideas for my work and avoided a few pitfalls after reading the book.
An excellent combination of practice, theory and new ideas.......2007-02-03
Through the many cases presented, Barbara and Billie were able to present to the reader how the different Large Group Methods actually can be applied, and, specially, how they form part of a larger roadmap for systemic change. Interesting also how all cases have a reflections session, which is very usefull in giving actual or to-be practitioners concrete tips for implementation.
The combination of cases with theory about the methods and innovative ideas (for example, on the use of Technologies and Graphic facilitation)resulted in a superior learning experience and complements very well their first book ("Large Group Interventions: Engaging the Whole System for Rapid Change").
Last but not least, I was happy to note how there was a shift in attention from method to challenges that organizations or communities are facing - so a focus on impact and change. A book worth reading for those that are facing or will face large scale changes.
Substantive and Provocative.......2007-01-16
In the complex, interconnected, global environment that most organizations work in daily, it is no longer possible for a few people "at the top" of the organization to have all the knowledge, expertise, and perspective needed for its success. At NovaLearning, we have used large group methods with colleges and universities for about fifteen years. I have constantly seen how institutions become better -- more focused, more strategic, but also more humane -- as they incorporate ideas and insight from across the system into their operation. When Bunker and Alban's earlier book was published, I was delighted because it captured well the range of large group approaches that had developed by 1996. This new handbook goes much further.
These are substantive case studies exceptionally well framed by Bunker and Alban's insight and experience. The diverse case study authors are generous in sharing at a level of specificity that makes real learning from their experiences possible. Each chapter is organized around the presenting challenge, the context and methodology (and why chosen), a detailed description of what actually happened, and perhaps most importantly, a set of reflections and insights that give the reader the chance to share in the authors' learning. I also found valuable the examples of how the innovative use of communication technologies can provide new opportunities as well as sometimes create unexpected limitations. I strongly recommend The Handbook of Large Group Methods to consultants who use or want to use large group methods. Individual chapters will also be important and provocative for corporate, academic, social, and political leaders and change agents.
How These Methods Actually Work In Practice.......2007-01-08
The strength of this book lies in the fact that it not only provides methodologies and resources for creating change in organizations in the 21st century; but also identifies how these methodologies actually work in practice.
A series of case studies ranges from addressing business issues at American Airlines and the BBC to managing change in organizations in Mexico and Indonesia. The reader is taken on a journey by those individuals who were responsible for implementing large group methodologies in their respective organizations.
By reading about these success stories and the methodologies they employ, you will be able to develop a plan for you own organization that will ensure a higher level of success that would otherwise be possible.

weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2006-10-19
Author Jay Rifenbary is a former West Point cadet, sales professional and corporate manager. As a professional speaker, consultant and president of a training and development center, he has a powerful message for readers of this book. Stop making excuses and begin to accept responsibility for everything you do. No Excuse! is enjoyable to read because of the raw energy and enthusiasm that it imparts. Rifenbary writes well and provides his personal philosophies to help the reader discover their ability to achieve success and fulfillment. His philosophy is a variant of servant leadership principles including the deep desire to serve others, accountability and valuing people more than wealth or power.
No Excuse! begins with one of the most dramatic prologues I have ever read. It not only introduces the book extremely well, but the author returns to his "special experience" in the epilogue also. The underpinning of his philosophy is borrowed from his days at West Point when "No Excuse, Sir" was one of the few answers a plebe was allowed to utter as a response to an upperclassman. Rifenbary exclaims, "We may get down on ourselves and use certain excuses to relinquish responsibility. That's exactly what excuses are used for; to avoid doing something or to "pass-the-buck". I dare you to make a list. Then when you hear yourself or others making an excuse, simply say, "No Excuse!''"
The book is divided into 2 parts comprised of 14 chapters. Part 1 lays the foundation of the author's no excuse philosophy with a discussion of the principles of self-responsibility, purpose and integrity. He considers this an important preparation for what he coins the Staircase-of-Success or THESAURUS factor presented in Part 2 of the book. Rifenbary takes each letter in the word THESAURUS and uses it as a step to teach an important point or principle. A total of 9 steps take the reader up the Staircase-of-Success. For example, the first step is "Totally Forgive" (Chapter 5) and it ponders the liberating influence that complete forgiveness allows when we forgive others and ourselves of faults and transgressions. When someone embraces total forgiveness there is no longer room for complaining or blaming because the person takes charge, and gains greater control over their life. No Excuse! is not simply a book to read, but it employs many tools to stimulate thought and action from the reader. Rifenbary uses many parables or stories to highlight his points. He also provides an Action Plan at the end of most chapters along with some charts and his own personality indicator.
No Excuse! is an enjoyable book to read. It may not break new ground or provide a radical new leadership philosophy, but it is certainly encouraging to read. As a result of Rifenbary's gift of clarity and printed energy, you will believe and know that change is possible in your life. If you are interested in discovering servant leadership principles presented in a dynamic and motivational book, you have no excuse... you will want to read this book.
Heavy on the military references but a good book.......2003-03-21
nevertheless. I found myself unable to relate to a lot of the military examples but the lessons taught are powerful. Good book but I think my husband would enjoy it more then I.
Now, more than ever!.......2001-09-18
Jay's message needs to be heard and read by everyone, NO EXCUSE! I wish he would write another -- there MUST be more he has to say!
A MUST READ FOR FAMILIES AND PROFESSIONALS.......2000-07-26
After seeing Jay Rifenbary at a recent conference in Newport Beach, and crying through the entire speech, I purchased the book. This is the most exceptional man and he will change your life by the words in this book. I no longer will live my life with excuses for every bad moment and blame everyone else for what I alone created. This is a must read for professionals and families. No Excuse! Buy this book!
Awesome-should be required reading for teenagers!.......1999-05-15
