5 out of 5 stars Sixty Second Motivator.......2007-09-19

This is a great little book. It is written in a light style that makes it easy to read and digest the principles that Jim spells out. If you have ever tried to make a change and been unsuccessful in accomplishing your goal this little book will help you to understand why you failed and how you can increase your chance of success. I found it to be helpful both with my own personal goals and in better understanding what may help to motivate my clients to achieve their stated goals.

5 out of 5 stars It Really Works!.......2007-08-08

Forget the motivational seminars, DVDs, and CDs. This little book has more insights into motivation than anything else I have seen! No hype here.

The author has taken complex concepts and made them easy to understand in an entertaining way. I use the practical tips not only to motivate my patients, but also to motivate myself!

5 out of 5 stars The Sixty-Second Motivator- Book Review.......2007-06-12

Both my husband and I enjoyed this book a lot. We found it to be a neat, well organized little book written in an easy-to-understand, straight-forward style that is genuinely enjoyable while at the same time providing valuable insights about why we do or do not do things. While we found it quite analytical about key factors concerning motivation, the book didn't make us feel intimidated or "preached at". The tone of the book came across to us as friendly, low-key, very helpful, analytical and a valuable "keeper" to refer to in life's future situations.

This is an excellent read and one book you will finish reading. They say that most poeople don't finish books they buy, but this one is soo relevant to our lives that you will want to read it cover to cover several times! Keeping it in my day planner for a random quick read infusion throughout the day helps keep me on track!!

5 out of 5 stars The missing link!.......2006-09-19

Having read Jim Johnson's No Beach No Zone weight loss book, I knew WHAT to do, plain and simple, and WHY it was important. So why wasn't I doing what the book laid out as a proven plan for weight loss? It's all about motivation. There's even a chapter on motivation in his weight loss book - but this book takes it one step further, into the science of motivation. Personally I think both books dovetail into one another well, especially if your lack of motivation happens to be in the field of losing weight. The science of how to lose weight permanently, and the science of motivating yourself to do anything. Once again, this is all based on research and not what one guy thinks.

One of the best surprises about this book is the way it is written. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this book is more of a story than a collection of facts, and reads almost like a mystery. One thing's for sure, it's extremely engaging. I read the whole think in one sitting; the research and strategy don't take volumes to explain or lay out. I'm not one to read huge volumes, and Jim Johnson always makes a concise read devoid of medical mumbo-jumbo. The actual motivation chart takes up one page and really makes you think about what makes your own self "tick". The only excuse for not getting motivated is if you aren't willing to give up one hour of your time, and a little more time spent thinking straight.

Book Description

Here are the practical, proactive tools managers need to get a handle on today's best change management strategies and ensure the success of their business improvement and turnaround efforts. Each of the change management strategies spelled out in this guide is firmly grounded in the extensive experience of Coopers & Lybrand, a Big 6 consulting firm with a dedicated change mangement practice. Each one has been company-tested in such organizations as Agway, New York Life, Prudential Direct, and the Office of Naval Intelligence. The result? Comprehensive analysis of the global changes confronting today's business leaders. Plus proven strategies for managing major change, creating an organizational culture conductive to change, and leading change effectively.

4 out of 5 stars A Bit Dated, but Still Useful.......2007-09-19

I wouldn't really call this a "field book," but it is certainly a good account of organization change management. It comes out of the mid-90s, so its orientation is toward the learning organization (Senge) and business process reengineering (Hammer and Champy). An update would doubtless align itself behind Balanced Scorecard (Kaplan and Norton). If you have any background at all in strategic planning or workflow analysis, you will find the basic concepts familiar and usefully applied.

The core observations make sense:

* Change is an ongoing reality of the modern enterprise, and so is change management.

* Change management must involve both the technical and the people sides of the organization.

* Managing change starts with planning, but planning isn't sufficient, so don't get bogged down.

* The leaders of change are the leaders of the organization: top management. Of course, they must commit to the change, but, more importantly, they must show that commitment in behavior: being the managers that the change requires to be successful, and actively involving themselves in selling the change to the troops.

* Change management must incorporate metrics, especially on the people side, so you can know if you're making progress.

Etc. There are lots of lists that can usefully be turned into checklists, and there is an appendix of excerpts from interviews with change leaders.

The negatives aren't really serious. The C&L methodology is so general as to be either obvious or useless, depending on your point of view. C&L doesn't share its tools, but it does name them, so you should be able to find some that are functionally comparable.

In sum, this is a good starting point for building a change management function and/or understanding your role in the process.

5 out of 5 stars A useful, handy & concise reference book........2000-12-19

A very useful book especially if you are a change agent within your corporation. In relatively short and sharp chapters, the three authors address key issues in managing change. The underlying theme that change is all about people comes out relatively clearly. Though the book is based on much of Coopers & Lybrand's approach to change management, the first six chapters are fairly generic. By learning from the Coopers & Lybrand's experiences , you can craft your appropriate change strategy for your particular situation and circumstances. Recommended reading for all those involved in managing change and transition at the workplace.

4 out of 5 stars An important contribution.......2000-04-04

An important contribution to a critical subject. Change management consulting often suffers from "hack" approaches. Whether change can in fact be managed is another issue.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership Wisdom.......2006-06-25

This is a good introductory book into the principles and practice of leadership. It teaches about the leadership skills that are critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment where change is the only constant. In this case, it is essential to have leaders (rather than managers) who can provide the vision for the organization, show the direction and motivate people towards the realization of the vision.

The author clearly explains the critical attributes of a leader which include team building, good communication skills, decision making ability, and the ability to motivate and coach others for the effective accomplishment of goals.

The book is a good investment for those who in leadership positions, particularly those who are at the beginning of their careers in this field without much experience or previous training. The author gives useful tips which are excellent guide readers. The checklist at the end of each chapter is a useful tool to reinforce what the reader would have studied in the text.

2 out of 5 stars Common Sense Stuff.......2005-10-24

I found this book only provides common sense stuff, not very insightful. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout this book.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2005-04-04

If this book were an entrée, it would mostly consist of meat and potatoes. Author Marlene Caroselli accompanies her valuable handbook on the basics of leadership with insightful quotations and anecdotes. "Basic" is the operative word here. The book makes no pretense, for example, of delving into the theoretical side of leadership development. Nor does it prepare managers for specific business tasks that they're more likely to encounter as leaders, such as budgeting and strategic planning. Rather, this book is specifically tailored for current managers who have leadership ambitions, and for newly minted leaders who need a little expertise to seize control of their new roles. We recommend it as a solid menu option with lots of good advice for that eager-to-lead audience. The book is thoroughly crafted to achieve its purpose, though more experienced readers may find themselves asking, "Where's the gravy?"

5 out of 5 stars High on the "must read" list.......2001-02-06

Leadership Skills for Managers(published by McGraw-Hill) provides some unusual slants on the topic of leadership. For example, the assertion that "leaders form strategic alliances" was something I hadn't considered before. The Prism of Partnerships showed exactly how to form such alliances. Thank you for some new slants on an old subject.

5 out of 5 stars Real Asset.......2001-02-06

This book is a real asset to any business manager - a must read- easy to follow - great tips for sound management.

    Book Description

To say that businesses today must contend with constant change is an understatement. New technologies, new competitors, new markets, new products, new employees--if your company is not already anticipating their impact you've fallen behind the curve. And yet, as managers acknowledge, and even embrace, change as a reality of organizational life, the success rate of change efforts is perilously low. In The Manager as Change Leader, Ann Gilley examines the complexities of change from the manager's perspective, providing readers with the tools to help themselves, their employees, and their colleagues successfully engage in the change efforts that will propel their organizations into the future. In a challenge to traditional approaches--which presume that change will occure once an initiative has been launched--Gilley focuses on the obstacles that managers face when others resist change before, during, and even after the process has been implemented. From wholesale re-engineering to the installation of a new software program, she explains that resistance to change is natural and inevitable, and offers practical approaches to overcome organizational inertia, focusing on the specific skills in leadership, management, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal relationships that contribute to successful change. Featuring a wide array of diagnostic and development tools, worksheets, and references, The Manager as Change Leader will become and indispensable resource for any manager faced with leading or navigating a change program, whether large scale or small.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Guidance to Prudent Growth and Real Achievement.......2001-03-17

There are several reasons why I think this is one of the most important business books I have read in recent years. Here are three. First, it is the best single-source I have as yet encountered which prescribes and explains a cohesive program by which create growth and high performance in an organization. Also, this program allows for all manner of adjustments and modifications to accommodate the specific, sometimes unique needs and interests of any organization. Finally, it is extraordinarily well-written. In fact, this edition combines two books in one volume because the original version has since been expanded to include "The RCL's Handbook for Action."

To gather the information they needed, Katzenbach and his associates at McKinsey & Company (the "RCL Team") examined more than 30 different change situations and interviewed more than 150 change leaders. In the Introduction, they discuss seven common characteristics among the RCLs and then cite three shared beliefs:

    1. "Tough standards of performance, but not just financial performance; customer value and workforce rewards are important as well.

    2. "A set of democratic principles that tap the creative power inherent in every person; but they also enforce consequence management, believing they can truly empower people only by requiring results in return.

    3. "The essence of self-governance is joint accountability (among leaders and constituents alike) for creating new opportunity; the basic approach is open dialogue and interaction to resolve conflicts by working to obtain the best contributions from multiple points of view."

The material is organized within three Parts: People-Intensive Change, Engaging the Organization, and Leadership Capacity and Growth. Throughout the book, the reader is provided with immensely informative as well as convenient charts (eg "Differences Between `Good Managers' and RCLs) which feature key points. I have already noted "The Real Change Leader's Handbook for Action" (pages 341-391 in the softbound edition) which, in effect, gives each reader a template as well as a frame-of-reference to implement whichever combination of concepts, strategics, and tactics is most appropriate. The "Handbook" offers comments, suggestions, checklists and frameworks "for getting started in areas where change leadership help is needed."

For me, one of the book's greatest values is derived from its response to the question, "What distinguishes a real change leader from traditional managers?" The answer may in some ways surprise you, as it did me. For example, "Real change leaders do not care if the change effort is fast or slow, empowered or controlled, one-time or recurring, cultural or engineered -- or all of the above. They only care that it is people-intensive, and performance oriented....Simply put, real change leaders learn how to survive and win in the delta state, while traditional managers can only survive in the current state or the future state." The real change leader is committed to delivering results beyond the bottom line and instilling a working vision in the hearts and minds of associates while doing whatever is the right thing to do. They help others to perform above expectations (especially their own), constantly nourishing relations with customers while developing and applying the skills needed to remain flexible. Over time, they achieve results with a no-excuses mindset.

If you share my high regard for this book, I urge you to check out O'Toole's Leading Change and Hamel's Leading the Revolution as well as Buckingham and Coffman's First, Break All the Rules.

    3 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2000-02-15

Reading the introduction, one is promised that the McKinsey team has hit upon a totally different type of leader: a real change leader (RCL). In reality, this book does not break any new ground. To be frank, much of the book concerns the difference between regular middle managers and RCLs. This can easily be rephrased as the difference between leaders and managers, a territory pioneered and well worn by Warren Bennis. Katzenbach does not add much to Bennis's past work. I agree that courage, clarity of vision, and risking failure are the heart of good leadership, but it is also nothing new. What is good about this book is two things: 1) It concerns middle managers and it is nice to read about people other than top managemers 2) The examples are good and should be helpful to any mid-level change leader. Otherwise, this one is skippable.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book - down to earth examples.......1998-10-13

This is a very good book about the practical issues of Change Management. You should read it together with Smith's "Taking Charge of Change". These two books will give you advise about the "how to" side of Change Management. Highly recommended.

After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.

With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.

Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.
