Book Description

Forensic Pathology: Principles and Practice is an extensively illustrated reference book that contains more than 1800 color photographs accompanied by well-considered text that thoroughly explains representative topics, and also provides abundant, up-to-date references for further reading. This well-written volume uses a case-oriented format to address, explain and guide the reader through the varied topics encountered by forensic pathologists. It will benefit not only the experienced forensic pathologist, but also the hospital pathologist who occasionally performs medicolegal autopsies. Doctors in training and those law enforcement officials investigating the broad spectrum of sudden, unexpected and violent deaths that may fall within the jurisdiction of medicolegal death investigators will also find this an invaluable resource.

* Large, colorful photographs which beautifully illustrate the concepts outlined in the text.
* Sample descriptions of pathological lesions which serve to aid pathologists in reporting their findings to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and others involved in investigations of sudden death.
* 'Do and Don't' sections at the end of each chapter which provide guidance for handling the types of cases examined within preceding sections.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!.......2006-11-04

This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.
And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book.......2005-05-30

It is just unbelieveable. The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

    Book Description

MEDICOLEGAL INVESTIGATION OF DEATH, known as the "bible" of forensic pathology to pathologists around the world, has withstood the test of time, recently celebrating its twentieth year of publication. Totally rewritten and updated throughout, the text is oriented to forensic pathologists, criminal investigators, and attorneys. It embraces all aspects of the pathology of trauma as it is witnessed daily by law enforcement officers, interpreted by pathologists of varying experience and expertise in forensic pathology, and used by lawyers involved in the prosecution and defense in criminal cases as well as those engaged in civil litigation. This authoritative and complete textbook is written by some of the most respected experts in the United States. The book continues to use a simple and practical approach in keeping with the tradition established by the previous editions. It avoids technical terminology, where possible, in compliance with the aim of addressing not only physicians but all parties with an interest in the study of injury patterns and the practice of pathology as it relates to the law. A large amount of new information and abundant material not previously covered are included in this volume. The many new illustrations, diagrams and sketches showing patterns and mechanisms of injury as well as an inclusive index render this book unique.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!!.......2007-05-13

This is a great book, it's easy to read, it has excellent, detalied and graphic photographs. I highly recomend this book as a text or reference book.

This a must read & a book to hold on to for reference.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it..........2007-02-26

All the information you need for death investigation...has a couple extra chapters in the new edition that were not in the last one...

5 out of 5 stars If my office caught fire, this is what I'd bring with me........2006-06-30

At first I was hesitant to spend $120 on a reference book I couldn't manually look through (aside from the pages available for viewing through Amazon), but I took a chance. As a forensic scientist who is new to death investigation, this reference is well worth the money. From front to back, this book is packed with well-written, thorough discussions of the different causes and manners of death. The written information, complimented by hundreds of photos and illustrations, is presented in terms that are comprehensible even to those without a background in forensic pathology or medicine. For the amount and quality of information packed into this large volume, $120 is actually a steal. I absolutely recommend this reference for anyone who has a role in death investigation. Students of forensic science, if you're too broke to buy this, put it on your wish list and hope you get it as a graduation gift. It's a must-have that is worth the three-digit price tag.

4 out of 5 stars Spitz and Fishers Medicolegal Investigation of Death........2005-08-18

This text is a requirement in some forensic fellowships. While in some subjects, the text is out-of-date, in other subjects, the facts never change and provide for a overall great reference text. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering forensics as a career.

    Book Description

Medicolegal investigation of death is the most crucial and significant function of the medical examiner within the criminal justice system. The medical examiner is primarily concerned with violent, sudden, unexpected, and suspicious deaths and is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death, identifying the deceased, determining the approximate time of death and injury, collecting evidence from the body, issuing the death certificate, and documenting these events through an official autopsy report. The basis of the medicolegal investigation is forensic pathology. Written for both medical and investigative professionals, Forensic Pathology, Second Edition presents an overview of medicolegal investigative systems. Completely updated, the book examines investigative techniques and procedures that lead to obtaining accurate conclusions of death by homicide, accident, or suicide.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars In-depth!.......2007-07-15

An excellent resource to forensic pathology. I would recommend you have some reference of medicine, however, before reading it. It's difficult to understand some of the terminology if you're picking up the book and reading without prior knowledge.

    3 out of 5 stars MISSING INFORMATION.......2006-09-26

MISSING INFORMATION IN THE BOOK ABOUT SHOTGUN WOUNDS, AUTOPSY PROCEDURE,BLOOD SPOTS ETC.

    5 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2005-12-02

If your idea of forensics is CSI on television, this book is not for you. If you are studying forensic science, or need an excellent reference book, by all means - buy it. This book gives one a strong foundation, and the photographs are an excellent source of information, of which to look at after reading the descriptions.

The second edition is a definite improvment over the first. If you are looking for a chapter on gunshot wounds, it is not here. However, DiMaio has written the standard on evaluating gunshot wounds: Gunshot Wounds: Practical Aspects of Firearms, Ballistics, and Forensic Techniques.

    4 out of 5 stars ??No gunshots??.......2005-10-03

This seems to be pretty good, comprehensive, and easy-to-read text on forensic pathology... but there is *nothing* at all on gunshot wounds... not even basic guidelines on entrance and exit identification. You have to buy his separate text on gunshot wounds to get anything on the subject. This book is cheaper than Spitz and Fisher, but when you find that there is nothing on gunshots, the price advantage is lost.

5 out of 5 stars Received Fast and in Good Condition.......2005-09-22

I received this book in a very timely manner and was happy with the book that I ordered. I would order from this seller again.

    Book Description

It is essential for anyone involved in the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases to be aware of the often hidden and subtle warning signs of Munchausen by Proxy. Munchausen syndrome, classified as a mental illness, occurs when a person inflicts or fabricates illness upon themselves, often as an attention-getting device. Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) is an even more insidious disorder in that such illness or injury is inflicted upon a victim-usually a child. Awareness can stop the vicious cycle of abuse Practical Aspects of Munchausen by Proxy and Munchausen Syndrome Investigation is the most comprehensive law enforcement handbook written on MBP, which is now considered an index factor in child abuse investigations and as a suspicion factor in the deaths of young children. This book offers detailed insight into the dynamics of MBP abuse and the Munchausen offender. The text chronicles real cases of MBP and Munchausen in the dominion of law enforcement and relates them to general principles of criminal investigations. With this practical guide, readers will be able to readily identify Munchausen-related behavior, apply that recognition in all types of investigations, improve the ability to detect covert or falsified crimes, have the basic knowledge to effectively combat MBP child victimization, or to successfully proscecute MBP cases.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful law enforcement field guide.......2004-05-24

Obviously the author of the one star review has had some negative experience with regards to the subject matter of this book. To call the information "outdated" is ludicrous in that so little information has been available for so long. Those that have participated in the web of deceit referred to as Munchausen's Syndrome find it difficult to accept the truth and are often on the offensive with anyone that possesses the knowledge of this disorder and its existance. Their anger and resentment is further exacerbated when this information is conveyed in any logical, fact based manner.

    1 out of 5 stars Over-priced and Out Dated!.......2003-07-07

This witch-hunt is over. The creator of MSBP (Roy Meadow) has been exposed and discredited for his "fanciful tales" and courts all over the UK are overturning convictions. Courts in the US are recognizing that this is not a diagnosis accepted by any medical establishment.

Child abuse can not be diagnosied by warning signs and attention-seeking behavior can only be diagnosed by a qualified professional once a crime has been established by medical fact.

5 out of 5 stars An important work from an acknowledged expert in the field........1999-07-03

Detective Artingstall is well-known for her body of writings and her experience in Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen by proxy cases. In this authoritative work, she provides insights and practical assistance missing from most other books on the subject. Legal forms, lists of pertinent questions to ask as cases are examined, and summaries of chapter highlights are among the useful elements of the book. The book is also liberally dotted with case studies, including legal outcomes. Although the copy-editing is not as thorough as I would have liked, the content of the book is outstanding. Detective Artingstall's book will be an often-cited resource for practitioners of multiple disciplines--social work, law enforcement, nursing, medicine, child protection, and more. While factitious disorder and Munchausen syndrome have been long-acknowledged in the professional literature, the type of abuse called Munchausen by proxy has been recognized and studied only within the last 2 decades. Works such as this one--based on a mastery of the literature, a wealth of personal experience, and an abiding desire to uncover the truth (no matter how disturbing)--will be invaluable in irrefutably establishing Munchausen by proxy as a public health and criminal-justice issue that requires our careful attention.

    Book Description

Written by the nation's foremost authority on gunshot wounds and forensic techniques as they relate to firearm injuries, Gunshot Wounds: Practical Aspects of Firearms, Ballistics, and Forensic Techniques, Second Edition provides critical information on gunshot wounds and the weapons and ammunition used to inflict them. The book describes practical aspects of ballistics, wound ballistics, and the classification of various wounds caused by handguns, bang guns, rifles, and shotguns. The final chapters explain autopsy technique and procedure and laboratory analysis relating to weapons and gunshot evidence.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A difficult read.......2006-05-20

The title of this book, should be "Ballistics". There is little information on the actual wounds, but more on the grains and callibers of the bullets. The book has black and white photos, which makes it very difficult to see stippling, powder burns and soot. You will learn detailed information about bullets and the brands (if you can rememeber all that), unfortunately, not much more.

    5 out of 5 stars Shocking.......2001-01-01

Very informative about the destructive power a bullet can have. As wrong as this may sound, if you own guns and have children, this is a good book to buy. It is difficult to explain to a child what a bullet can do to a human being. With this, you can show them.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook on the subject of firearm injuries.......1999-06-03

This text should be in the library of any reader who has an interest in the topic of guns and the injuries they produce. While written with the practising forensic pathologist in mind, the book is appropriate for investigators, attorneys and other healthcare providers. The discussions of firearms and their features are very good and should help those with limited knowledge about guns understand what they do, how they do it and the terminology used in the field.

5 out of 5 stars The only book you will ever need on the topic........1999-02-22

As a criminal defense attorney, my clients freedom often rests on my ability to understand the technical aspects of a case. While I will seldom, if ever, know more than the "expert" opposing me, understanding the topic in a straight forward and simple manner makes my interaction with that expert a benefit to my client. This to the point of knowing when not to say anything. This book provides a one-stop resource for all aspects of firearms, gunshot wounds, and the related forensic techniques and methods. A must for anyone who needs to understand, in plain language, the issues that come into play in gunshot injury and firearm cases. The photographs, x-rays, and diagrams provide an excellent point of reference for the text.

      Book Description

Terminal Ballistics: A Text and Atlas of Gunshot Wounds is a comprehensive guide that explains the science of forensic ballistics - focusing on the hardware, injury patterns, and forensic techniques associated with gunshot wounds. The text begins by describing the anatomy and design of basic firearms and the fundamental components of ammunition rounds, .22 rimfire, and propellants. The author presents a variety of gunshot injury patterns, and defines the concept of the pathological range of fire determination. He delineates patterns from injuries sustained by commonly fired rounds, including those acquired after discharge from handguns, high velocity centerfire rifles, shot guns, and black powder weapons. More obscure injuries from air pistols, nail guns, and homemade weapons are also detailed. Specific chapters identify the effects of intermediary targets, the mechanics of injuries sustained after a bullet passes through bone and the internal organs, and exit wounds. The author also observes situations that mimic gunshot injury, a frequently neglected area of gunshot injury interpretation. This extensive resource also depicts the technical aspects of forensic wound ballistic examinations, including protocol for managing the receipt of specimens from a gunshot wound surgical resection, gunshot residue sampling, and forensic radiology as applied to gunshot investigation. It outlines crime scene investigation, the autopsy and resulting report, forensic photography, and entomology. The final chapter highlights personal experiences from theatres of war and the investigations of atrocities where gunshot trauma is demonstrated.

It's outline format lays out all of the common issues seen in forensic pathology, with all of the various arguements made by other forensic pathologists described in easy to understand terms. Book Description

The scope of applications of forensic radiology includes determination of identity, evaluation of injury and death, use in criminal and civil litigation, in administrative proceedings such as workman's compensation hearings, in medical education, and in research. Until now, there has been no single source of radiologic knowledge for various disciplines to turn to when examining X-rays or other radiologic records as forensic evidence. This is the first book to cover the entire spectrum of radiological applications in forensic science. Discover how forensic radiology can be used to: o Identify remains and determine issues such as animal vs. human remains; whether one or more bodies are involved; and the age, sex, and stature of remains o Evaluate causes of death and whether it was accidental, homicidal, or self-inflicted o Establish evidence in both criminal and non-criminal proceedings o Analyze bite marks to identify perpetrators o Detect fakes and forgeries in art works o Determine whether child, spousal, or geriatric abuse is occurring o And much more Copiously illustrated with more than 640 pictures, Forensic Radiology is a visual guide and standard reference not only for radiologists, but for everyone involved in the field of forensics-from anthropologists to trial lawyers. This extremely readable text requires no background of medical training to understand, yet is detailed enough to inform physicians and dentists interested in this specialty field.

4 out of 5 stars Coroner to Fallen Stars.......2002-05-16

Dr. Noguchi was Chief Medical Examiner/Coroner of the county of Los Angeles, which includes Hollywood. His job is to establish the "manner, cause and circumstance" of death and to report the findings to the public. Every death is a mystery until the cause is known. A coroner is specifically trained to solve that mystery. He collects evidence, interviews witnesses, oversees the autopsy and laboratory reports on the body. In any unusual death, the first duty of an ME is to suspect murder, until proven otherwise.

At age 13 Dr. Noguchi witnessed an incident with his father's patient that set him on the road to forensic medicine. He later learned medicine by day and law by night. After graduation he left for America, the world leader in technology. He aimed to practice forensic medicine because of his love for scientific detective work.

Chapter 4 tells of the autopsy of Robert F. Kennedy. One shot entered underneath the right armpit and exited the right front shoulder. Another was under the armpit and traversed sideways to the spinal column. The fatal bullet entered the skull an inch behind his right ear. The thoroughness of the tests gave credence to a conspiracy theory: Sirhan had NOT fired the fatal bullet (p.101)! The murderer fired from the back into RFK's head; the gun was 3 inches from the head, 1 inch from the right ear. Sirhan was firing from the front (p.103). His gun contained eight bullets, twelve bullet tracks were found at the scene. They could not prove the fatal bullet was fired from Sirhan's gun.

Chapter 5 tells of his fights in the jungle of bureaucratic politics and personalities. "Noguchi was a target because of plain, old-fashioned prejudices" (p.113). The secretary who testified against him admitted her information came from newspapers and the prosecutor! Dr. Noguchi's private comments were the "graveyard humor" common to pathologists. The chief
prosecution witness who tried to fire him as "emotionally disturbed" admitted he offered him a post a county hospital with live patients! Dr. Noguchi's faults were being an extrovert, having a sense of humor, and excessive ambition in expanding his
        department.

Chapter 11 "Forensic Science at Work" summarizes many interesting and entertaining stories from his career. He says Proposition 13 made it almost impossible to obtain increased funding for an increased work load.

Dr. Noguchi reveals the tragic facts of Natalie Wood's drowning. You can read about Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Tate, Janis Joplin, William Holden, and John Belushi. He tells of "the terrible danger of alcohol ... the most popular and most deadly drug ever conceived"; one out of every four deaths is alcohol related (p.227).

Chapter 14 tells of his demotion and removal as Coroner. He had just been installed as president of the National Association of Medical Examiners in Nov 1982. The investigator had ruled that Dr. Noguchi had been "unjustifiably demoted", but the Civil Service Commission disregarded this ruling. He was the victim of bureaucratic harassment or some kind of personal vendetta.

4 out of 5 stars Noguchi writes an enlightening book about forensic science........2000-07-20

As someone who enjoys reading about forensic science, I had never read a book (nonfiction) or account by a coroner. Unfortunately, I live in Pittsburgh where we have the infamous Cyril Wecht to have to listen to or read about constantly in our newspapers and on television. He is not the best representative of this group of scientists, though at one point he must have been a friend to Noguchi. Noguchi does a fairly good job of explaining the work and some of the politics involved in running a forensic lab for any large city. He could have written in much more detail then he did for some of the stories, filled in the endings of the stories like with Patty Hearst, and talked more about the work done with other groups such as the FBI. I think he tries to be fair about giving credit where credit is due, and I also feel like he wrote this book in answer to all of his many critics who lied about his statements and abilities due to prejudice. Being a native Californian and also a deaf person, I am fully aware of the prejudices of that state and can sympathize with Dr. Noguchi. I plan on reading his second book to see if his writing and coverage improves. Otherwise, for those who aren't deeply involved or interested in this area of science, this is a good introductory book. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

5 out of 5 stars Great for Those Entering Forensics.......2000-06-12

Dr. Noguchi's book gives an avergage reader or a student interested in forensic pathology or other areas of criminal justice an in depth look at some of the most famous deaths of this century.

2 out of 5 stars Still unanswered questions.......2000-06-01

Considering this book, one must understand it was printed in 1983 and tell-all stories were not quite so "in your face" as they can be now. I did expect, and still would like to hear more about the actual autopsies in more detail, as it is barely discussed in this book. However, it is still an interesting accounting of controversial deaths, but will not answer those troubling questions most of us still debate. I found the first chapter about Natalie Wood to be the most enlightening. She really fought for her life, but still no one has satisfied the original question of why she tried to leave the boat in the first place. I must admit that he did more to elevate the status of forensics than any other individual in his field. Maybe Dr. Noguchi will do a more in depth book in the future and concentrate more on the cases than his troubled political life.
