5 out of 5 stars really useful book.......2003-02-11

This book is a very practical, well-written guide to workplace issues. It clearly sets out both law and practice. I think this book is useful to both lawyers and lay people alike. It is also very readable with a great many examples given. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Highly informative and good reading.......2003-02-09

As a social worker I found that this book made an extremely valuable contribution to my understanding the issues around workplace harrassment. The book is written with clarity and sensitivity. Randi Blom, MSW

5 out of 5 stars Plain speaking about a delicate set of issues.......2003-02-08

I like the clear, judgement-free approach, and the no-nonsense, bedrock feeling of fairness and reality. I especially like the fact that the book is written in plain English, for audiences of all intelligence and experience levels.
Even though I'm not a professional in the field, it was helpful for me as a small business owner to get a better idea of what goes on in the workplace.
I'm sure it would be doubly helpful to HR folks, and anyone running or managing an enterprise, or a department.

Book Description

Does it really help women to think of sexual harassment primarily as a legal issue?

High-profile sexual harassment suits, such as that of Paula Jones against President Clinton, are often life-changing events, with all parties coming away with careers, reputations, and lives profoundly affected. Women have long suffered on the job from sexual extortion, now called quid pro quo harassment, but today the controversy centers on "hostile environment" harassment. Every one has an opinion about it; managements spend more and more money training people not to do it; and still the suits strike like lightning-devastating and seemingly random. Women and men often feel polarized in the workplace by what they perceive to be general hostility couched in sexual terms.

What to Do When You Don't Want to Call the Cops questions establishment assumptions that women are, by definition, passive victims who require government help. It sees instead a period of transition toward a more balanced population of women in the workplace, with accompanying disruptions that can be minimized by understanding. Joan Kennedy Taylor presents what we know about the workplace and interviews managers, labor experts, and workers in such male-dominated fields as construction, engineering, business, and medicine to shed light on the male group culture that exists without women. She illustrates expressive behaviors that may be objectionable but are not sexual harassment and proposes specific strategies by which these objectionable behaviors can be countered, including a new feminist approach in company training programs. Taylor examines traditional and nontraditional workplaces, and female on male as well as male on male harassment, in order to apply these strategies to the entire picture.

Lively and anecdotal, Taylor's balanced, non-adversarial study fills an important gap by providing strategies for businesses and employees, as well as for those who find themselves the target of sexual harassment.

5 out of 5 stars Finally -- Common Sense on Harassment.......1999-12-05

This is a fantastic, much-needed book. Its common sense approach will help men, women and employers handle issues around harassment in a practical, meaningful way. The perfect antidote for the "politically correct" police. Especially important for professors and students in academia. Easy to read style makes it accessible for any reader.

This comprehensive, practical guide shows how to identify harassment and to understand its causes in the workplace. It discusses the effect of sexual harassment as it relates to the victim, other personnel and the company. The harassment of men and the constantly changing standards for proving harassment are also addressed.

Included in this title is an overview of the laws governing this topic and an explanation of these laws and the process for filing and pursuing complaints and the potential resolution of the lawsuit--pros and cons. Practical suggestions relating to options that one has in dealing with sexual harassment are also discussed. The applicable federal and state laws are explained in easy-to-understand language, including the most recent Supreme Court rulings concerning supervisor and employer liability.

Appendices offering extensive resources including publications, websites, telephone counseling, support groups and listings of federal and state agencies make this title necessary for every employee's reference bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars The power plays underlying sexual harassment at work.......2006-04-13

Sexual harassment in the workplace may not be as easily identified as leering moves on the parts of supervisors and co-workers: it's also a power play and individuals need help to get back in control. That's why SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE is so important: it defines and outlines different forms of such harassment, tells how to prevent it and how to file an effective complaint, and how to work with a lawyer and an employer. From compiling the initial report to escalating the complaint, SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE walks you through every move. An essential guide to making the right moves and understanding the law.

5 out of 5 stars How To Stop Harassment.......2006-01-16

The primary U.S. law regarding sexual conduct in the workplace, which Congress enacted in 1964, has had a profound impact on American society and business. Attorney Mary L. Boland's comprehensive handbook tells employers and employees how to define and prevent this problem and explains what to do if you are a victim. She provides the right level of detail for nonlawyers, pointing out the kinds of issues, conditions and events that can trigger a complaint. The book is readable and clearly organized, with sections that explain employer responsibilities, legal resources and remedies - from filing a lawsuit to arbitration and mediation. Four appendices and a glossary add valuable information. We highly recommend this lucid, practical book to human resource managers, executives, small business owners and employees at every level, particularly victims of sexual harassment.

Book Description

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is the kind of book you read and wonder where it was hiding when you started your career. In it you will find advice on how to deal with everyday workplace issues that could otherwise turn into catastrophic events.

Both men and women deal with the topics discussed in this book, but women seem to experience them more intensely. Women, more than men, tend to have unrealistic expectations, say "yes" when they mean "no," take criticism personally, let conflicts escalate into major battles, and fail to ask for what they want in the workplace.

The first section, "Surviving Coworkers," offers profiles of typical problem people in the workplace—prima donnas, passive-aggressive coworkers, gossips, arrogant people, complainers, whiners, cynics, and bullies to name just a few.

The second section, "Surviving Bosses," describes legal issues women face that involve employers and bosses. The goal is to get what you want by diplomatic means. If you want to negotiate a work/life balance arrangement, for example, don't emphasize how such an arrangement will benefit you. Talk about how it will benefit the company.

The third section, "Surviving Yourself," is for women to reflect on the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes that might be keeping them from fulfilling their potential. It can be difficult to step back and examine why we are unhappy in our careers, but no one gets what they want by standing in place.

The last section, "Your Ladder to Success," is devoted to self-improvement. After reflecting on where you come from, it's time to make a plan to go somewhere. This section will help you determine what you want out of your career and how you can get it.

Each of the short 42 chapters is divided into two parts: the first part outlines the problem, while the second part offers solutions.

5 out of 5 stars The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide.......2007-07-16

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is the ultimate guide for women about the business world and how to be successful in any profession. This book contains three helpful sections: Surviving Coworkers, Surviving Bosses, and Surviving Yourself. Each of these sections explores the realities of a number of situations and looks at what women can do to adjust and thrive even in these difficult moments.

The first section, Surviving Coworkers, takes a candid look at office personalities and how to reduce or limit the effect of these individuals on your work and your sanity. The second section, Surviving Bosses, looks at important issues such as dealing with common discriminatory situations such as the old boy network, pregnancy discrimination, and equal pay for equal work. The third section, however, probably contains the most important information in this whole book, Surviving Yourself. This section prompts women to take a closer look at ourselves. Often, we are the ones limiting ourselves, taking on too much, and expecting perfection in an imperfect world. By looking at these issues, we start to understand what we really want from ourselves, from our peers, and from our careers.

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is an organized well written book that details everything a woman needs to know to be successful in the workplace, including the things that we'd rather ignore or blame on someone else. Not only does the author have a straightforward, no bull, method of presenting this material but shares this information in an often humorous always inspiring way. In short, this is a book that entertains and inspires while it teaches us how to be successful.

5 out of 5 stars The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide.......2005-07-02

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is highly recommended for those starting out in the workplace and for professionals who have been around for a while. This information packed publication offers tips and solutions on how to deal with various situations that arise daily in our workplaces. Written in a format easy to understand, we can all learn from this book. *****

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2005-06-24

This is an excellent, easy-to-read manual for any woman navigating through the workplace. Ms. Kaip writes in a succinct fashion on a variety of topics, infusing humor and personal anecdotes throughout. This would make a great graduation gift for those entering the workforce for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Is Work a Four Letter Word? It Doesn't Have to Be!.......2005-06-03

"On the most basic level, you give your employers 40 hours a week, and the employer gives you a paycheck. But on a deeper level, you give them your personality, character, skills, knowledge, ideas, trust, and loyalty. In return, employers and coworkers give you a sense of belonging, security, personal and professional development, opportunities, and support." When I read that I thought, "WOW! Is that ever right on!"

Author Sarah Kaip certainly knew what she was talking about when she put this book together. Her humor and witty style make reading this guide a pleasure. I have been in the workforce for over thirty years and have seen most of the issues first hand. I have been on both sides of some of the issues, and I sure wish this book had been around sooner.

The information and advice in The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide doesn't just apply to women, or office jobs, but to anyone in the workforce in any position. I have worked in plywood mills, retail stores, television stations, and corporate offices, and the insights and solutions contained in this book cover most of the situations I have found myself in.

I highly recommend this book, it should be required reading curriculum for high school and college students looking to enter the workforce. An excellent book for use in job councils and in rehabilitating displaced workers.

5 out of 5 stars As good as career advice gets.......2005-06-01

Even your mother doesn't give advice like this. I wish someone had told me what this author writes when I first started my career. I identified with many of the problems presented in this book. The examples given seemed like scenarios I lived through myself. Her no-nonsense approach to dealing with coworkers cuts through a lot of the office politics and just plain silliness workers endure each day. She also offers several tips on how to get what you want from your boss without making him or her feel threatened.

Perhaps the best parts of the book are the last two sections on "Surviving Yourself" and "Your Ladder to Success." Many women are their own worst enemies. Fear, doubt, self-esteem problems, and lack of know-how keep women at the bottom of the corporate ladder. The ladder part tells women how to get started in their climb to the top. I highly recommend this book.

    Book Description

The Employers Reasonable Care Pack consists of four components.

Firstly, Sexual Conduct in the Workplace: an employees workbook is a 24 page workbook for all employees. The workbook is designed to educate employees about sexual harassment, as well as, what types of behavior are considered appropriate or inappropriate. The workbook includes a tear-out employee acknowledgment form to document sexual harassment training.

Secondly, The Sexual Harassment Policy Statement is a single page document which clearly states the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions (EEOC) definition of sexual harassment in the workplace, outlines behavior which could be sexual harassment, and provides a comprehensive grievance procedure (a required component of any business sexual harassment policy). The The Sexual Harassment Policy Statement is provided on paper for photocopying and on CD-ROM for printing as many copies as needed.

Thirdly, we have included an 18 x 24 color poster. The poster is designed to be posted in a prominent location where all employees will have access. It again outlines sexual harassment as defined by the EEOC as well as providing excerpts from Title VII, the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Lastly, we have composed a Managers Dos and Donts. This quick reference guide should be given to every manager. It will help them avoid making potentially costly mistakes when handling incidents of sexual harassment. It will also aid them in creating and maintaining a harassment free workplace.

With this package we believe that you can quickly and efficiently implement a comprehensive sexual harassment policy, educate your employees about sexual harassment, and potentially save yourself and your business from a legal nightmare.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars IF YOU NEED BARE BASIC INFORMATION.......2005-12-02

This package is clearly meant for companies who have no previous experience or information re: sexual harassment. It is very basic, but serves the purpose of informing a smaller company of basic obligations. Much of this information can be found on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC.gov) and Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (dol.gov/esa/ofccp) web sites...these are the premier government agencies enforcing these EEO laws against harassment. Guidance is also provided at www.eeoguidance.com ~ Do the right thing and make sure your employees are protected. This package would be a good start.

4 out of 5 stars sexual harrassment training.......2005-08-19

worth the money versus paying someone to type it all. It will cost you the same.

    5 out of 5 stars Reasonable Care!.......2001-03-16

As an employer I can tell you that taking "Reasonable Care to prevent sexual harassment" in the eyes of the law seems an onerous, if not impossible, task to me. At least this pack provided us with a simple process to follow and the materials to do it with. My lawyers tell the company is liable for damages, no matter who commits the offence and even if we didn't know anything about it! Hell, were a company trying to make a living. I don't have time to go around checking on everyones behaviour. They recommended I use this pack so that in the event of a complaint against our company I could demonstrate to a court that we'd taken action to prevent problems. Sensible advice. This pack is down to earth stuff and I'd recommend it to any employer who can't afford an army of HR staff. I just needed a solution and this was it.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2000-04-19

Despite the positive reviews to the contrary, this package was a great disappointment. The .pdf files have typos (! ) and the suggestions were very simplistic.

5 out of 5 stars This kit makes sexual harassment training easy!.......1999-07-21

We thought the Employers Reasonable Care Pack did just what it claimed. It was easy to use and apply. I thought the Employee workbook did a great job of making sure that I had taken "reasonable care" in the eyes of the law. This was definately the least expensive solution I could find.

5 out of 5 stars Strength from within.......2001-11-12

Linda Fisher's testimony brings hope, strength and inspiration. I will soon commission to be an officer in the US Army. Her testimony has given me a broader perspective of the reality of being a young, ambitious and a beautiful female in the military. It may be true that it is a male dominant force, but women have gained a greater respect in the military over time and throughout history.
Fisher exposes the reality of what can happen within the ranks of the military between males and females, superiors and subordinates. This type of incident is not new. Throughout history the same, if not similar situations have occurred. We have to understand and realize that this happens in the general society. In businesses and schools, to men and women of all ages in all types of professions. This book, can help anyone understand the adversity faced when put in this situation. It disturbs and affects both parties the harassed and the harasser. I have both witnessed and experienced sexual harassment incidents outside of the military and within the military, I understand the pain and the fear.
I am grateful to have read such a testimony that has given me the awareness of what goes on and how to deal with it. (...)

2 out of 5 stars Well written Fiction.......1999-10-03

After being witness to many of the incidents that happened in Panama, I am shocked to read that the items printed are written as being true. I think that this book can help alot of women who might actually have been sexually harassed but can not be a guide to the military's judicial process. False information can only be regarded as lies and should not give other military women cause to fear the system.

5 out of 5 stars ULTIMATE POWER: This is a MUST READ for everyone!!!.......1999-04-23

I have read ULTIMATE POWER:ENEMY WITHIN THE RANKS and urge anyone, who is shocked by the abuse that women receive, to read this terrific personal account by an army officer who lived this horrible situation. First of all, take the time to read the personal life of Linda Fischer and her climb to the rank of Major in a so called "mans world". Linda has shown how successful a young girl can become by setting a goal and then reaching that pinnacle of success. When you realize what a an enormously loving person she is and then read her account of this harassment, you wonder how these things can go on. The story is so intense and told in the first person, you can actually feel Lindas pain as she explains her own personal feelings and frustrations as the powers to be turn a deaf ear to her 'crys for Justice."..This may be Linda Fischers first attempt at writing, but you won't put this book down, as she allows you to come right with her in the days and events leading up to this atrosity and her frustrations in the months and years that follow. You don't have to be in the military or ever be harrassed, to feel her pain. All you need to understand what Linda went....and is going through, is be a human being .You will love her writing style and be shocked by her account of this true happening. What a fabulous person she must be.....first to live this experience and then to put it in terms that ALL of us can understand. Is this a 5 star book? Its a 10 Star......READ IT and you'll see why!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Gives hope to those who have endured the pain of harassment........1999-03-15

Ultimate Power, Enemy Within the Ranks is a must read for those of us who have suffered through the pain, humiliation and stigma associated with reporting sexual harassment within the U.S. Army. Although I am a civilian employee of the U.S. Army, who was the victim of sexual harassment by a supervisor, coincidentally, at the same Army post where Fischer now serves, it is utimately the Commanding Officer's within the command who make decisions about how the case is handled when harassment charges are brought against an accused harasser. The unspoken of policy of sweeping these cases under the carpet is the Army's way of dealing with harassment and just like the Fischer case, my harasser was allowed to quietly retire with full benefits. Fischer has brought to light the further victimization women must face when asserting their rights in sexual harassment cases. Reading this book brought back painful memories, but it also sparked a shimmer of hope that a meaninful life does exist after being sexually harassed within the U.S. Army. I now know I am not alone. I recommed it for all employees of the Armed Forces, military as well as civilian. Thank God we have women like Linda Fischer to step forward for what is right........

3 out of 5 stars A true account of sexual assualt in the US Army.......1999-03-15

I am a retired US Army LTC--Military Police Corps and personal know Major Fischer. As a Lt., she worked for me at West Point. She was a bright, energetic and competent young officer with a future in the Army. Since my retirement, we have been in contact through cards and phone calls. Not until this year, did she ever mention to me that she had been sexual assualted by her supervisor. However, I can now related to several of her phone calls which requested information about individuals. After my retirement from the Army, I was Chief of Police at the University of Kentucky for 10 years. I am very familar with the area of sexual assualts and all the new titles we have attached to these situation. I believe Major Fischer's account of the incident. It took great courage on her part to report the incident and write this book. It appears that after all the Army's problems with this area, it final has taken some appropriate measures to address this area. My hope is that this book will help others and give hope to those who have had to deal with sexual assualts.

1 out of 5 stars The God Deception.......2007-05-13

This book presents itself as a practical, hands-on answer to dealing with difficult situations and people in the workplace. What you get is a deceptive, hidden religious message by someone pushing their God agenda. Watch out.

        5 out of 5 stars WOW .. I'll be re-reading this many times!.......2006-07-29

This book on bullies and leadership is like no other that I've read so far. It's worth the money and I've got a couple more to give as gifts.

First I was amazed just how "readable" this is. Not heavy, condescending, nor cute; just straightforward, informative, and very thought provoking. At first I wondered where this book was going because the chapter titles, and subtitles seemed a bit - well honestly weird. I think if I had to make one constructively critical comment I change the titles. Now, having said that, the titles are wonderful and actually mean what they say, but until I read the book I never connected quantum consciousness with leadership or protecting myself against workplace bullies. This book is really well research and I followed some of the footnotes and I'm still reading some of this background information. All I can say is amazing.

While this book has a heavy emphasis on personal self-understanding, and effective leadership principles what's remarkable is that these two critical topics really are focused on dealing with both workplace bullies and hostile work environments. What's even better is the down to earth, serious information related to knowing your civil rights, what work competencies to expect from your Human Resource folks, and managers. Additionally, this book provides an excellent source of specific information I need to document the anguish I'm going through at work, and how to make a decision about what to do. Humph, the burden of proof is on the victim, but this outlines how to meet that burden and win. But this book is also balanced enough so that management is also guided through the process of being "strong-armed" by a bully employee or outrageous other managers and CEO's. More involved than I ever imagined.

What I found most surprising, thought provoking, and got a major - "gosh she's right" going through my mind lots of times -- was the discussion of why our American work culture seems to cultivate, sustain, and even reward bullies and penalize and ignore those of us who are victimized. You've just got to read her section on "traditional American work ethics". I don't know that I necessarily agree with everything she said but it sure got me thinking - and paying more attention at work to things I never paid attention to before.

All in all, I'd say this is a must read, even if you aren't in trouble at work. If you're a student and/or advocate of leadership, then this is a 5 star read. Short, to the point, will keep you thinking and discussing with friends for hours.
