Product Description
Holes, Paperback Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys "build character" by spending all day, every day, digging holes. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment--and redemption. Grade Level: 4-8

"If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy." Such is the reigning philosophy at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility where there is no lake, and there are no happy campers. In place of what used to be "the largest lake in Texas" is now a dry, flat, sunburned wasteland, pocked with countless identical holes dug by boys improving their character. Stanley Yelnats, of palindromic name and ill-fated pedigree, has landed at Camp Green Lake because it seemed a better option than jail. No matter that his conviction was all a case of mistaken identity, the Yelnats family has become accustomed to a long history of bad luck, thanks to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!" Despite his innocence, Stanley is quickly enmeshed in the Camp Green Lake routine: rising before dawn to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet in diameter; learning how to get along with the Lord of the Flies-styled pack of boys in Group D; and fearing the warden, who paints her fingernails with rattlesnake venom. But when Stanley realizes that the boys may not just be digging to build character--that in fact the warden is seeking something specific--the plot gets as thick as the irony.
It's a strange story, but strangely compelling and lovely too. Louis Sachar uses poker-faced understatement to create a bizarre but believable landscape--a place where Major Major Major Major of Catch-22 would feel right at home. But while there is humor and absurdity here, there is also a deep understanding of friendship and a searing compassion for society's underdogs. As Stanley unknowingly begins to fulfill his destiny--the dual plots coming together to reveal that fate has big plans in store--we can't help but cheer for the good guys, and all the Yelnats everywhere. (Ages 10 and older) --Brangien Davis

Holes- fullfilling.......2007-09-22
I read this book at the urging of my 7 yr old grandson and didn't expect to be held captive by it. I read until 1 A.M. to finish it. A great read and now I want to see the movie. He has also read all the Harry Potter books and will probably talk me into reading them someday too.
Over 3200 reviews for this book. I would say it is well read.
A Terrific Story that Transcends the Genre.......2007-08-28
I came across Louis Sachar's HOLES recently while my daughter and I were browsing books. I hadn't seen the 2003 movie, but remembered the trailers and so, since my daughter had settled down with a book, I decided to read a bit of it. Nine chapters (okay, short chapters) later, I was still going strong when my daughter was ready to go. I was hooked. This is what they call "juvenile fiction," right? If you've ever read Lewis Carroll, you'd have to agree that the term "juvenile fiction" is a very elastic term. Put plainly, the fact that juvenile fiction is (usually?) about children doesn't mean that the style is any way immature or unsophisticated.
HOLES is a story about a middle school-aged boy, Stanley Yelnats, who is falsely charged with and convicted of stealing a pair of celebrity sneakers that had been donated to charity. Yelnats is sentenced to "Camp Lake Green," a boys' detention center and work camp located in the middle of a Texas desert. Camp Lake Green, as it turns out, is a cruel bizarro-world version of a normal summer camp. There is no lake; it dried up decades before. And there is only one activity to speak of: digging holes, one a day, five feet deep and five feet in diameter, ostensibly to build character. There is, however, a mystery behind the digging. The camp's vicious warden wants to be notified of anything "interesting" that's discovered by the boys while digging.
The mystery is literally and figuratively uncovered by Yelnats, whom the other "campers" call "Caveman." The narrator relates vignettes about Yelnats's ancestors; these stories, while interesting in themselves, are also critical to understanding the mystery of the warden's interest in the holes.
Sachar's prose is beautifully astringent; like Hemingway, Sachar rarely employs the unnecessary word. The story and the characters are likewise straightforward: I think that the lack of real ambiguity in the characters' behavior helps younger readers to relate more easily to the people and the events in the book.
As a parent, I would recommend reading the book yourself--if only for your own enjoyment--before encouraging your child to read it. The novel is very dark in some places; the warden, for instance, is particularly sadistic, and doesn't really get her full comeuppance by story's end. But I think HOLES is a terrific story, with memorable characters, and with wonderfully moving, poignant, funny passages. Children over the age of ten (and, well, adults) will, I think, love reading it.
Concerning the difference (or lack thereof) between the book and the film adaptation..........2007-08-22
I saw the movie first. I loved it. I laughed, I cried, it moved me. So I decided to read the book.
Of course, if I loved the movie, I had to love the book, because they are exactly the same. This, I must admit, is a little disappointing. I can't deny the exceptional quality of either medium, but, when a movie producer decides to take a really good book in hand and reproduce it for the screen, I like to se him or her take a few artistic liberties. I want to see some kind of significant difference between the original format and the reproduction.
Oh well. I suppose my advice to all is this: choose one or the other. There really isn't much of a point in seeing the movie and reading the book. Sure, there are a few differences (such as the fact that Sachar, in the book, describes Stanley as overweight, which Shia LeBeouf most certainly is not), but they're insignificant to the overall feel.
We Couldn't Put it Down.......2007-07-02
I read this book to my 9 and 7 year olds. By the middle - we couldn't stop. We were at the beach with several older cousins who had both read the book and seen the movie and they were all sitting around listening. It made them all want to re-read it.
The plot is not hard to follow but is very intertwined. Amazingly so.
Enjoy this book with your kids
Great entertainment.......2007-06-15
Holes
Have you ever been in a place that is super hot well in the book Holes by "Louis Sachar", young boy goes to a camp which is located in the desert. Stanley Yelnats is young boy whom goes to a camp of kids who don't want to go to jail but go to this camp instead. This camp makes all of them boys realize their mistakes. Stanley had to learn how to make friends without him making the wrong friends who might make him somebody he doesn't want. Stanley makes new friends and a lot of money. One dislike of this book is that I didn't really understand if when Madame Loiselle gets to go to the mountain. This book is really is interesting and really funny.

A new and fresh look at a topic not truly examined until now.......2001-07-21
This is a criminology text, but fairly easy to follow. Basic criminology theories are reviewed here, as well as the authors' theories as to why girls have been left out of past juvenile deviant studies. They go on to hypothesize why girls have been overlooked, and point out the crime rate for girls has not "exploded" just recently, but has remained relatively stable with their boy counterparts. A great book to help anyone who works with kids, especially girls, who seem to have few alternatives once within the system.
Book Description
This historically successful and important text is revised to meet modern course demands. Empey and Stafford provide an extensive, comprehensive and balanced look at the theories associated with delinquency. It is aimed at the upper end of the market concerned with theory. This text also focuses on environmental issues, juvenile justice issues, and the juvenile justice system.
Book Description
In 1984, this groundbreaking book presented a chilling profile of the criminal mind that shattered long-held myths about the sources of and cures for crime. Now, with the benefit of twenty years' worth of additional knowledge and insight, Stanton Samenow offers a completely updated edition of his classic work, including fresh perceptions into crimes in the spotlight today, from stalking and domestic violence to white-collar crime and political terrorism.
Dr. Samenow's three decades of working with criminals have reaffirmed his argument that factors such as poverty, divorce, and media violence do not cause criminality. Rather, as Samenow documents here, all criminals share a particular mind-set--often evident in childhood--that is disturbingly different from that of a responsible citizen.
While new types of crime have grown more prevalent, or at least more visible to the public eye--from spousal abuse to school shootings--little has changed in terms of our approach to dealing with crime. Rehabilitation programs based on the assumption that society is more to blame for crime than the criminal, an assumption for which a causal link has yet to be established, have proved to be grossly inadequate. Crime continues to invade every aspect of our lives, criminal court dockets and prisons are oppressively overcrowded and expensive, and recidivism rates continue to escalate.
To embark on a truly corrective program, we must begin with the clear understanding that the criminal chooses crime; he chooses to reject society long before society rejects him. The criminal values people only to the extent that he can use them for his own self-serving ends; he does not justify his actions to himself. Only by "habilitating" the criminal, so that he sees himself realistically and develops responsible patterns of thought, can we change his behavior.
It is vital that we know who the criminal is and how and why he acts differently from responsible citizens. From that understanding can come reasonable, compassionate, and effective solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting book with some very good concepts.......2007-08-05
Love it or hate it, Dr. Samenow hits it on the head when he says that someone with a criminal mindset must learn to accept responsibility for their own actions or they will never be able to lead a truly productive and crime-free life.
I also think that he has it right when he says that criminals, or anyone for that matter, are constantly doing a balancing test. We each do a risk/benefit analysis for our decisions, no matter how small that decision may seem. What makes someone a criminal, is the fact that they make decisions that manipulate and/or harm others for their own benefit. While this is something that everyone does from time to time, criminals seem to do it constantly.
No matter what brought them to this pattern of decision making (poverty, genetics, a lust for excitement, etc.), the way to reverse it is to make them realize that they are responsible to change that pattern.
A lump of Immalleable Clay.......2007-05-15
Was the despicable criminal and murder spree on April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech University by Seung-Hui-Cho because of his gender, race, parental upbringing, psychotic inclinations, or simply by the acts against him by those around him?
None of the above, inclusive and or exclusive of either one of the purported reasons, if you read the theories and analytical presentations author Stanton E. Samenow, Ph.D., enumerates in his book titled "Inside the Criminal Mind."
According to the author, it is a misconception the person inclined to be a criminal is because of his or her parental upbringing, poverty, influential friends, mother, father, family and neighborhood. In his book, "Inside the Criminal Mind," the author states, "Criminals cause crime - not bad neighborhoods, inadequate parents, television, schools, or unemployment. Crime resides in the minds of human beings and is not caused by social conditions."
The author also discounts the theory of a psychotic mind, "...psychological theory, in its current state, is more misleading than illuminating in explaining why people become criminals. Far from being a formless lump of clay, the criminal shapes others more than they do him."
"...criminals come from a wide variety of backgrounds - from the inner city, suburbia, rural areas and small towns and from many religious, racial or ethnic groups. They may grow up in closely knit families, broken homes, or orphanages. They may be grade school dropouts or college graduates, unemployed drifters or corporate executives. In most cases, they have brothers, sisters, and next-door neighbors who grew up under similar circumstances but did not become criminals."
Thus the gestalt of "Inside the Criminal Mind," sets out to show criminals know right from wrong and the criminal is not the product of external sources. Criminal behavior is the product of the individuals' way of thinking.
The author Samenow says, "I shall expose the myths about why criminals commit crimes. I shall draw a picture for you of the personality of the criminal just as the police artist draws a picture of his face from a description. I shall describe how criminals think, how they defend their crimes to others, and how they exploit programs that are developed to help them. I shall discuss what these people are like as children for, with systematic study; it is possible to identify at least some children who are predisposed to criminality."
Looking back and thinking of the video Seung-Hui Cho made which was televised to the world, he did exactly what author Samenow illustrates in his book which was publish way before Seung-Hui Cho came into being. The criminal never takes responsibility for his acts and blames everyone and everything for his shortcomings and worse yet, for his criminal mind. Those of us who saw the video and were not aware how the criminal and his mind thinks, felt a sense of guilt and culpability for the despicable crimes he committed. However, we did not mold him to be or do what he did, but he molded us to think we were the ones responsible for his morally reprehensible and wretched act.
I strongly recommend "Inside the Criminal Mind." Everyone, parents, teachers, administrators, people at large should read it to better understand the mind of a criminal.

Inside The Self-Serving Mind.......2007-05-13
This book is facile and superficial. It reveals very little about the criminal mind while exposing much about "the pyschology industry".
Samenow's View of ADHD.......2007-05-12
Dr. Samenow's view of persons challenged by ADHD on pages 57 and 58 are not only absolutely incorrect, but Dr. Samenow contradicts himself in his reportage of "Andy". Dr. Samenow's completely inaccurate assessment of ADHD evidences a total lack of voluminous available research and I strongly encourage anyone interested in ADHD read Harvard University Psychiatrist's Edward Hallowell and John Ratey's books on ADHD, "Driven to Distraction" (1995) and "Delivered from Distraction" (2005)Driven To Distraction : Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through Adulthood Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder Answers to Distraction. Dr. Samenow's obvious lack of knowledge in this area as well as non-empirically supported views and poor understanding of the differential diagnosis of ADHD will only ensure that thousands of people in our jails and prisons challenged by ADHD will continue to be misdiagnosed and untreated which holds the promise of their rehabilitation. For example, according to the Harvard Medical Newsletter, Bi-polar disorder is the most common misdiagnosis for adults with ADHD and according to Dr's Hallowell and Ratey whose credibility far exceeds Dr. Samenow's, "Particularly in males with a history of violent behaviors, the kinds of people that fill jails and mental hospitals, one finds many who have a classic history of ADD/ADHD. Their violence is not due to a defect in their conscience or to psychosis or to some morbid familial conflict, but to the frustration intolerance and impulsivity of ADD/ADHD. Whey they are properly diagnosed and receive the appropriate treatment, often their course changes for the better". Indeed, I have seen in my own work, when accurately diagnaosed and properly treated, many such persons significantly and successfully initiate life-altering changes for the first time in their lives! Easy to read and very interesting.......2007-05-10
This book is an excellent read for anyone interested in criminology. It gives a tremendous amount of insight into the thought process of the criminal mind. Dr Samenow talks about the technique used by the late Dr Samuel Yochelson in his research-treatment program for criminal behavior. Dr Yochelson seemed to have been making some progress with those patients at that time.
I'm looking forward to reading some of Dr Samenow's other books.
