Book Description
Patent Searching Made Easy. Written by inventor David Hitchcock, this book explains step by step how to use an Internet browser to search U.S. patents. It discusses how to classify an invention properly, and then, using that classification, find all relevant patents issued within that class. Whether browsing infant flotation devices or computerized pet toys, the inventor can quickly tell by searching over the Internet whether he or she is in the running to be "the first."
Download Description
"Inventors, use this book to: ? verify the patent status of an idea ? search Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries ? use online patent search services In the past, if you wanted to assess the novelty of an idea, you had to wade through the patent database at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) in Virginia--or hire a lawyer to do a patent search for $500 and up. The cost and inconvenience of these searches often meant that good ideas were left to rot on the vine. With David Hitchcock's book, Patent Searching Made Easy, you can learn to do patent searches yourself, on the Internet, at little or no cost. A physicist, engineer, and patent searching expert, Hitchcock gives you the vocabulary, instructions and strategies you need to search for a patent quickly and easily. He explains how the PTO classifies different types of inventions, so that you can assign your idea to the right class, compare it to related ideas and then determine if it's novel enough to qualify for a patent. Patent Searching Made Easy also shows you how to: ? prepare for online searches with the right hardware, software and computer skills ? access online patent searching resources ? narrow online searches with key words and Boolean logic ? perform database searches at Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDLs) ? do microfiche searches at PTDLs ? search fee-based patent databases on the Internet ? search international patent offices ? do advanced searches at the PTO and PTDL Written for both inventors and business owners interested in expanding their product line through the license, distribution or manufacture of other people's ideas, Patent Searching Made Easy is the easiest way for you to determine Am I the First? "

Good for beginner.......2006-03-03
Step by step you will be introdused in to the labylinth of US patent schedule. Thies review is for 2nd ed. eBook.
Outstanding.......2006-01-25
Mr. Hitchcock's book has made my life a lot easier. All the info you need is right there. I'm sure you could take the time to look some of it up, but there are a lot of techniques and tricks that I never would have thought of. I especially like the Searcher's Secrets that are highlighted throughout the book.
Then there is the discussion of Usenet as a resource. Most people think that the World Wide Web (WWW) and the Internet are the same things, but that's only because browser programs make it easy to surf the Web. Hitchcock explains how to use the thousands of discussion groups on Usenet to answer specific questions.
The thing I really like the most is the chapter on the European Patent Office (EPO). If my patent search at the US Patent Office turns up some foreign patents, I can check them out online. There is even a way to translate the text of foreign patents into English for FREE! That little trick has already saved me about 10 times the cost of the book in translation fees.
Great job!
New, updated version of an excellent resource.......2006-01-23
With the constant improvement in computer resources available to the inventor who wants to do his own patent searching, an updated version of this fine book is a welcome sight. Observe the dates on reviews of this book to see that those citing a need for an update are old and should be dismissed.
The patent literature is an excellent resource for researchers or inventors to learn what has been done in their field of endeavor. Professional inventors use the patent literature to spark their own ideas. Surprise! -- That is the intended purpose of our patent system -- "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts...." Learning how to access this resource is useful to all involved in improving our technology.
An Excellent Patent Search Reference.......2006-01-14
Too often, inventors and business owners plunge ahead with an exciting new idea. They invest large sums of money in research and tooling only to find the idea is already patented or that it cannot be patented because it is actually not a new idea. The solution for avoiding this waste of time and money is a preliminary patent search. By using this book, you can rapidly learn how to tap into the remarkable facilities that are available today and find a quick and low cost answer to the question of whether to go ahead or abandon an idea.
The amazing beauty of some of these information sources is that you can reach them from your home, your desk at work, or at a nearby library. Even if you feel you are computer illiterate, "a dinosaur", you'll find the author's step by step instructions will enable you to find a gold mine of information pertaining to your invention.
The author starts out with an overview that clarifies the differences between various intellectual properties such as patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. He notes it is important to overcome the common misconception that patent owners can count on law enforcement agencies to defend their patents. The government will not. A patent is not a defensive legal right, but rather an offensive legal right. It is you that must sue infringers.
He then discusses some of the patent searching basic principles and tools. He simply and clearly presents how electronic databases now allow you to extract and examine patent data. He covers the basics, such as keywords, wildcards, and Boolean logic in an easy to understand steps accompanied by pictures that show you exactly how the information will appear on your computer screen.
After you become at home with the fundamental methods, you are introduced to advanced methods that you can use on the PTO and EPO (European Patent Office) Websites. He explains, in plain English, how to use the XOR Boolean operator, proximity operators and how to use wildcards. The author even shows you how to translate sections of foreign patents online, at no cost. You will be pleasantly surprised as to how soon these arcane sounding terms and methods become old friends. Again, in each case, examples and their screen images will aid you to grasp what is going on.
While computer searching on the Internet has become a terrific starting point, the author stresses the continuing importance of using the facilities of the Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDL) that are available throughout the nation (addresses and phone numbers are given in the appendix).
The writer details how using and understanding the patent office patent classification system will greatly aid your search efforts. This involves using the Index to the U.S. Patent Classification System, the Manual of Classification, and the Classification Definitions. He gives examples and reproductions taken directly from these books.
Some inventors make the mistake of failing to check non-patent office sources for prior art. The use of the Google Internet search engine is described and the addresses for several other search engines are given. Another basic source for information is the Thomas Register which is now also on the WWW. The use of government agencies is also covered. Yet another tool covered, are the many discussion group Websites.
At the conclusion, the author gives suggestions for analyzing your search results. He notes it is common to come up with a half a dozen prior art patents and cites the four Patent Office criteria regarding Statutory Class, Utility, Novelty, and Unobvious. He notes the mental trap inventors often fall into by thinking "that if an aspect of your invention hasn't been "claimed" in a prior patent, you can claim it."
This is a terrific, up-to-date, book for learning how to do a preliminary patent search at a very low cost.

The Internet Legal Guide: Everything You Need to Know When Doing Business Online

Book Description
* Suppose you buy something online; was that online contract you clicked on really enforceable, even if you just scrolled down and did not read it? * Is receiving pornography in office e-mail from your co-workers sexual harassment? * Can stalkers find your personal information online? * What can you legally place on your website? And what's not allowed? * Do you own your domain name? * Can a public library censor your use of its Internet-linked computers? * Who else can read your e-mail? * Is it legal to gamble online? * How "private" is your private information after you disclose it to a website? * Is a student exercising his First Amendment rights when he creates a hate website on a public school's Internet server? * Do other countries address these issues differently from the U.S.? * Which country's laws apply on the Internet? These are just some of the issues addressed in this book. Issues In Internet Law: Society, Technology, and the Law can be read by the average person to develop an awareness of issues in Internet Law and is also designed for use as a textbook. But Issues In Internet Law: Society, Technology, and the Law is about change. Change brought on by advances in technology and the effects on society and, in turn, how the law copes with those changes. Issues In Internet Law: Society, Technology is not meant to be a 'law book' - at least not in the sense that you can turn to a page and immediately read a definitive answer as to what the state of the law is on any given topic. In the Internet Age, in a world where changes occur at light speed on a daily basis, the only state of the law is the state of flux. This book offers a view of the law through the prism of society and culture. Advances in technology have always changed societies, and there has never been as far-reaching and profound an advance as the Internet. By reaching across all borders into all societies and cultures, the Internet has created a single virtual world - a melting pot where each society's cultures, mores, and values are interchanged. Differing political, religious, and cultural ideas, practices and beliefs assail web visitors at each mouse click. It would be impossible for the Internet not to change the very fabric of every society on earth. Some nations want to block access to, or at least filter, content on the Internet. Marketers realize the Internet provides unsurpassed access to consumers, but such access may entail threats to privacy, manipulation of children, risk of fraud, and undesired annoyances such as spam. The Internet has become the world's largest, most pervasive soapbox where anyone and everyone can have their 15 minutes of fame. But the downside of such unlimited global access is that the megaphone of the Internet can be used to disseminate misinformation, libel, and hate speech. Laws are required to protect consumers, investors, children, and those who are defamed, or subjected to hate speech. But with hundreds of nations, each with its own jurisprudence, cultural and societal mores, philosophies, and legal systems, which laws will prevail and - even if every nation on earth shared the same jurisprudence - how could any single nation apply its laws to a technology that knows no boundaries? The Internet is like a giant snake slithering across every country - each nation focuses on the portion of the snake it sees and tries to apply its jurisprudence to that portion. This book looks at the attempts of nations to overlay their laws upon the Internet.

Another Internet Law Primer.......2007-09-01
The Internet is not lawless. If you use the Internet you need to understand at least the basic rules. I've read to many forum posts asking simple copyright questions, blog comments harassing others, clueless cybersquatters -- all which can result in large lawsuits.
The book works well as a textbook, reference, and primer for Internet laws. It's broken down into six parts. Each chapter ends with a summary, notes, and quiz.

Anarchy Online is absolutely a must-read for anyone concerned about cyberspace matters. Charles Platt's excellent book promises "the truth beyond the hype" and he delivers. "Anarchy Online" examines the sensationalism surrounding crime, free speech issues, and sex on the Net. He's done his homework, covering issues like cyberporn, hacker busts, and encryption in compelling detail. Although he possesses an insider's knowledge of the insiders, Platt steps back sufficiently to get a useful and thought-provoking perspective.
Book Description
Enter the front lines of both sides  in the war to control the Net.
The U.S. Justice Department, the Christian Coalition and the Guardian Angels want to clean up the Net. ACLU attorneys, college activists and a raging band of rebels are trying to stop them. Who will win this epic battle, and what will the consequences be?
From Charles Platt, one of the original online renegades and a contributing editor of Wired magazine, comes these two distinct "guides" --each with its own front cover -- to address both sides of these modern issues in one book. This authoritative look begins with the origins of Usenet and ends in a nightmarish future where the war on netporn has become as expensive and futile as the war on drugs. Along the way we meet dozens of other colorful personalities fighting to control the greatest mass medium since the printing press.
Customer Reviews:
There is better.......2000-03-02
I enjoyed this book but found 'Life and Death on the Internet' by Keith Schroeder to be more useful, informitive and interesting. Personally, I would pass on this book and get Mr. Schroeder's.
Nothing to do with "anarchy online".......1999-02-22
Platt's book caters to people who subscribe to stereotypes about the Internet. The main problem with this book is it's misleading title: "Anarchy Online." It totally leaves out all of the online content being created by anarchists today, especially the hundreds of really useful websites. Platt should stick to fiction, although this book could be classified as fiction.
good book, tackles ethics and legal issues head-on.......1998-12-24
I quite enjoyed both parts of this book. "Net Crime" does a lot to put real computer crime in perspective -- not the media hype that most people are used to. It's not very technical, so non-techies could understand and appreciate it. The section on satellite piracy doesn't seem directly relevant, but it's very interesting and does well to illustrate some basic "hacker principles" without actually saying so. (All you hackers that don't believe in piracy, don't trip, Platt doesn't tend to overgeneralize.)
On the flip side, "Net Sex" provides (afaik) an accurate historical account of the 'net (and BBS) pr0n scare and some of the aftermath. There's a lot of serious discussion about freedom of speech, but the author's bias doesn't stop him from carefully portraying both sides of the issues.
All in all, these were two very interesting books. Anyone interested in studying hacking (from a social/legal point of view, not a technical one) and/or the Internet porno industry should read this book. So should people who just want to learn a little more about computer crime and porn laws and how they came to be.
They should have taken out net-sex (it's obsolete).......1998-12-01
The part on net-crime was great since it showed history, ethics, pyschology and the zen of hacking itself. i was hoping that the coverage could have been broader, but the book was halfed into net-sex where it talked about BBS pr0n which is kinda dead nowadays.
Nonetheless, a good book if you're towards the history and the sense of hackers. But if you're looking for technical stuff, uhmm, better turn your back. The book is not for those wanting to learn, or is in search of technical knowledge. The book is for critics, professors, and the mass who don't understand what hacking is all about.
Quite Cool.......1998-09-11
I actually enjoyed reading this book. Quite a good deal when you consider you get 2 books rolled into one.
The content itself was not to bad. I only wish it took into consideration the thoughts of hackers themselves instead of just one person. Another thing that was a bit annoying was that it only concentrated on the US, what about the UK, a quick look at alt.ph.uk will tell you that there is a lively hacker movement in the UK as well.
But, all in all, a good read..

Customer Reviews:
A Review by Daphne Baylor Dean and Kevin Yeoman.......2002-03-11
Like most things in life this book had several good and bad aspects. We really enjoyed the diverse topics that the author explored. He wrote in depth on issues ranging from new media technologies, e-commerce, and privacy to hacking, copyright issues and indecencies. All these issues brought about some very thought provoking inquires for us as readers. We also appreciated the book's anti-commercialization stance on cyberspace. In contrast, one major drawback is the means by which the author heavily intertwined legal issues in every chapter of the book. People without a high interest for law may not appreciate the author's expertise in the field of law. Overall, we thought this book would be worth reading for anyone interested in cyberworld issues.
Book Review.......2002-02-28
Our group enjoyed reading this book and were surprised how up-to-date the book was on current events. The book was full of interesting information about the history and future of the Internet. However, we found the book cited too many law cases and legal issues regarding the Internet. The author would go into great lengths to explain something when a simple statement was all that was needed. To conclude, the author did present a book describing how communication, technology, law, and society play a major role on the Internet frontier.
Issue in Cyberspace.......2002-02-27
Samoriski helped the reader get the overviewe by starting with the simple issues before focusing them quite deeply in each chapter. He maked the readers understand the basic of technology in the Internet that is impacted by business. Moreover, he indicated how communication, technology, law, and society play a major role on the Internet frontier. In the last chapter, he gave some conclusion and discussed about the future of th eInternet.

Book Description
The practice of downloading music off the Internet first gained nationwide popularity in 1999, with a service called Napster that enabled users to copy digital music files from thousands of other users connected to the Napster network. Napster was forced to shut its network down in 2001, but dozens of other file-sharing networks have taken its place, and now users are swapping movies and software as well as music files. Users of these services call it sharing; the entertainment industry calls it theft of intellectual property. This volume examines the arguments of both sides.
Customer Reviews:
Focuses on the primarily-music piracy going on in the industry.......2005-07-06
Here's another Greenwood title geared/intended for a young audience with high relevance and recommendation for ESL and low-reader adults. INTERNET PIRACY focuses on the primarily-music piracy going on in the industry, with contributors providing essays inspecting the underlying issues on both sides. These pro/con arguments provide clear discussions any reader can use to aid in personal determination of ethical behavior. An important set of concerns related in exceptionally clear language for a young adult audience becomes acceptable to adults too in INTERNET PIRACY.

Book Description
Prominent attorneys debate web censorship and school vouchers in a compelling new book-and-CD series inspired by the popular National Public Radio program Justice Talking. The New Press is proud to announce a major new collaboration with the National Public Radio series Justice Talking, an acclaimed radio program that features leading attorneys debating controversial contemporary issues. In book-and-CD sets that include the complete audio recordings and transcripts of the Justice Talking shows, overviews of the legal and other arguments relating to each issue, and a variety of primary source materials, the Justice Talking series of publications are unparalleled introductions to the leading debates of our time.
Freedom of speech, one of the most hotly contested issues in America, has entered a new battleground: cyberspace. The very qualities that make the Internet an ideal tool for communication are those that facilitate the exposure of children to potentially harmful material, typically protected for adult use under the First Amendment. Now, in the first volume of a remarkable new book-and-CD series published in conjunction with National Public Radio's acclaimed Justice Talking program, Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union, goes head-to-head with Bruce Taylor, executive director of the National Law Center for Children and Families, in a debate about web censorship. Moderated by the popular NPR host Margot Adler, this is a thoughtful, informed discussion of an emotionally charged subject that doubles as a primer for those who want an engaging and accessible way to get up to speed on this cutting-edge issue. The compact disc contains the complete audio recording of the debate; the accompanying book contains the transcript, along with a history of related First Amendment law and a comprehensive overview of the arguments for and against the Communications Decency Act, and other laws regulating sexually explicit material on the web. The book also contains a range of supplementary primary source documents.
