5 out of 5 stars Makes a great gift for "home entertainers".......2007-01-18

Although I did not see "Celebrations" myself because it was sent out as a gift, the recipient was very pleased. She described it as very user friendly; easy to find what you want quickly. She said the book had some new and interesting ideas that she was already putting to use. She went on to say that it was one the best of this kind she had seen in a while (and she sees quite a few).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars IT TAKES YOU STRAIGHT TO SCHOOL (wink).......2007-09-19

The book gave me moe information than needed. It talks about the complications in distrubution deals, the unions, music, digaital cameras, and a few other things upcoming producers need to know about the industry before signing into or onto something. I highly recommend it to producers, writers, and directiors. It remind us that the film world is like a whole other business on another planet.

5 out of 5 stars MUST Have.......2007-05-12

If you wanna get into any sort of video field, or wanna know how the industry functions, and what are the legal and business issues you have to deal with...

...this book is a MUST Have.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for everyone that wants to know the business.......2007-01-19

not only did I get this for myself but I got two other friends their own personal copies (got tired of them borrowing mine). It will keep you out of legal trouble in the film industry and give you insight as to how things are structured.

5 out of 5 stars More Than a Great Book--It's a Public Service.......2004-06-16

This is more than a great book--it's a public service. The
authors share insights from their decades of legal and
entertainment production experience, in essence offering
thousands of dollars of free legal advice to aspiring
independent producers. Beyond offering a roadmap of business-
planning steps, the book includes templates of numerous legal
forms that an independent producer might need. Meanwhile, in
clear and artful prose, they alternate between You're-Not-God
straight talk and You-Can-Do-It encouragement. Between the
lines, there seems to be a genuine interest in helping
important stories and quality independent work to see the
light of day. I've read other books on the business side of
entertainment that were helpful, but this stands out as the
best of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars The bible of independent film producer.......2003-08-27

If you are or want to become an independent film producer, this book will give you all of the business/legal knowledge of filmmaking you need. Even though I have not finished the book yet, I've already found this book to be extremely valuable. Because I am planning to produce a new film next year, I even called up Mr. Tulchin directly for legal advice. He was very friendly and took the time to give me great advices and was very knowledgeable in not just U.S. based entertainment law but also international entertainment law as well. Read this book and you will find it worth more than what you paid for!!!

4 out of 5 stars A helpful examination of the entertainment business.......1999-05-05

As an attorney teaching an entertainment law course to undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame, I've found this text book to be very useful. Not only does it address and examine legal issues that face entertainment industry persons, it examines *how* the entertainment industries actually work. The vast majority of my students have found this book to be useful and worthwhile.

This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.

5 out of 5 stars Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!!.......2002-04-04

This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine the Future, Study the Past.......2000-11-08

This Business of Television is a landmark volume in our practice (micro-economic forecasting for the entertainment industry). Here are the top three reasons why.

Reason # 3: it is incredible that guys of this stature would take the time to compile such an essential and complete perspective of the television business. Goodenough, a seasoned entertainment lawyer, law professor, and a scholar pioneering the study of law and evolutionary biology, brings the structure and rigor, while Blumenthal, a prolific TV, multimedia, and online entertainment producer and businessman brings the been-there-done-that street savvy.

Reason # 2: it is, after all, the business that pays for the content (the subscriber, pay-per-view, advertising, syndication, and the latest, e-commerce revenue models) and the content that drives the migration to new technology (streaming media webcasting and video-on-demand, interactive TV, and wireless). The clear understanding of the financial systems supporting television and video entertainment offered by Oliver and Howard in this book facilitates the modeling of future monetary transactions.

Reason # 1: video programming spread from broadcast to cable and then to satellite in one generation. The last decade found it spreading to the PC via CD-ROM, DVD, and broadband Internet. In the future it will be found on our cell phones, wristwatches, car seat backs, and refrigerators. There will be innovations in business arrangements along the way, but those who cannot converse in the language of economics will be doomed.

The second edition proudly bears a jacket quote by Morty Morton, former producer of the Late Show with David Letterman, who remarked, "This Business of Television has gotten me through years of moderate success in the TV business. I'm now ready to burn the damn thing and open a restaurant."

Book Description

To help artists avoid hidden agendas, this book exposes the multi-layered language of recording agreements crafted by major label lawyers. Clause by clause, it deconstructs actual contracts and translates them into "real English," presenting the original and decoded versions side by side. Focusing on artists' issues, such as advances, royalties and distribution, this revealing handbook explains the need for each clause, offers advice on negotiating fine points, and outlines alternatives for developing new contracts. User-friendly, it clarifies common terms uniquely redefined by the music industry, and has entertaining inside stories. "Considerable wit and wisdom on this festering snake pit of a business." - New Times

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A classic!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-03

As soon as I bought the book I could not put it down I read it from top to bottom non-stop. This book is an easy read and very applicable. I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit on Amazon, Music business 101, future of music and Guide to releasing an independent record by Tim Sweeney.

4 out of 5 stars excelent.......2006-05-15

The music industry world ins an alien environment for most of the emerging artists and many need guidance to avoid scams and legal glitches, this book can be a good guide in defeating those lawyers that try to fool you into a deal. Despite the depth and professionalism , the book it isn't the best out there,” Music Business & Entertainment Law Contracts for Indie Recording Artist, Labels, Songwriters, Composers, Producers, Managers and All Others in the Record Industry. Binder / CD-ROM set (PC & Mac)" by Ty Cohen is far better when dealing with all the aspects and it includes viewpoints from different men in the industry, and also includes clear and easy to understand examples

5 out of 5 stars Real World Advice from a Real Guy - Highly Recommended.......2003-09-21

Not only is this book (and it's prequel, "Confessions of a Record Producer") the real deal, so is the man who wrote it. I was so impressed by his first book that I contacted him as a consultant on a producer/artist agreement I was negotiating (I am a producer). My goal was to come up with something that was actually fair to both parties and Moses got us to that point quickly. His suggestions were works of innovation that surprised and satisfied everyone.

I also attended his 2-day seminar which dissects recording contracts. Here he dispelled the many misconceptions I had about record companies and their contracts AND he helped me to understand what is really being said in these contracts (and it's scary!).

He is not a lawyer, but one of the most insightful men I've met. Lawyers pay HIM for his advice. He REALLY understands contracts and explain things in a manner no one else seems to be able to do - it must be a sixth sense.. Highly recommended reading. Both his books should be permanent reference books for anyone in the music business. Besides, they're fun reads, unlike most other "how-to" music-biz books.

5 out of 5 stars Staright to the point, easy to understand and insightful.......2002-09-03

This book is easy to read. It goes straight to the point and gives you inside information so you can undestand everything. I recommend this book to any kind of person, including lawyers (like myself).

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect........2002-05-26

Avalon fills the books with plain text translations of virtually every major clause in a standard record deal and makes it very easy to understand. He puts in plenty of narration and real world examples to let you see how each of these clauses can come into play and where loopholes lie so you won't just have to take your lawyer's word for really anything. Great book. Will save you tonnes of cash in legal fees and might end up saving your career. My only complaint is that he uses false names for all the stars he talks about in his examples to protect himself from being sued. But a lot of them are really famous so if you think about it you can figure a few out (I found the Michael Jackson one quite an eye opener). Definitely recommend it.

I've been running a video game company that is now over 10 years old. It is refreshing to read a book that distills the important information, approaches the industry with a clear mind, and promotes useful thought even for veterans. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver.......2003-05-30

I manage nearly 50 software engineers at a fortune 500 company. Once I got this book, I realized that our engineer contracts are extremely weak given the volatile nature of many software developers (something I've personally witnessed), and if anything ever went wrong under our existing terms, we'd be in a very litigious situation. Thanks to the information presented here, however, I've been able to outline a strategy for our legal department to consider for a revised draft that could potentially save our company millions of dollars and countless manhours of paperwork in averted lawsuits and other such nightmares. Take it from me-- most engineering managers and entrepreneurs are not as well versed in legal issues as they should be. This book was a huge eye-opener and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, somone that knows something about law!.......2003-05-29

This is a great book for anyone that wants to know the actual details of media related law and intellectual property, but doesn't have the time to get a law degree. I own a small software and web company and we are constantly paying attorneys to review "potential" copyright, patent, and other infringements. I have wasted so much time paying for legal advice, but it seems like these experts never can give me a straight answer. I have been looking for a book that can be understood by a non-attorney, but that has explicit examples of copyright law, trademarks, what is legal, and what is not. After reading this book, I feel 100x more confident now, and I immediately no longer need legal advice in many areas, I KNOW the law in the areas, and can be confident that my decisions are reasonable. I highly recommend this book to any executive or business person that is in the intellectual property loop, but is sick of not understanding what is what.

4 out of 5 stars For those serious about producing.......2007-06-08

Good basic legal information oriented towards the independent feature film producer but useful for anyone who wants to produce film or other distributed video. Won't replace having an attorney but will allow you to do some things by yourself and understand what is going on when you need to hire one. Similar to "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" but with enough distinct material (example contracts for instance) to be worth having both.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-05-13

Comprehensive and a terrific resource. The goal is not to use the book instead of legal advice, but it is a terrific starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Irena Tully, Impulse Films & Prestige Entertainment.......2007-02-09

This is a useful and inspirational book that explains a variety of legal film production matters and provides drafts of contracts for basically every aspect of film & TV production. And it covers all major players in the colossal process of making a film, helping to make sure that whatever your role in the production is, you understand your rights.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book - no CD.......2007-01-03

This book is a good collection of legal contracts for the industry, but it doesn't have a CD-ROM or associated website where you can download the contracts as a starting-point template.

I believe the author is gouging us by forcing us to buy the CD separately. Very cheesy business practice. I hope you have OCR software to scan these pages into your computer.

5 out of 5 stars A fine and thorough book.......2001-07-10

Litwak provides about as much as a professional could share in this throrough outing. He also shares 'boilerplate' contracts for virtally all key players in a film production. Of course, direct experience is the best teacher, but EVERY neophyte in film or television must own this book, and its a handy reference for seasoned professionals and part-timers.

Also check out his companion book, "Dealmaking..." which has priceless cues on what gray areas to avoid in negotiating with lawyers and their clients.

Essential for producers, directors, writers and anyone hoping to get financed or paid or both!

4 out of 5 stars Make your agent read this...but you should read.......2004-01-31

This is a great resource for dealmaking, but most actors and writers that I know aren't negotiating their own deals. The trick is to get your agent to work harder at creating opportunities, so that they actually have deals to make. Yes, your agent should read this book ... but for myself, as an actor/writer the book HOW TO AGENT YOUR AGENT...is my bible. It helps me kick my agents in the butt ( without them knowing)and I get results...they're working harder and I'm getting work. Also I liked that book with all the casting directors pictures...just in case you see them in Starbucks and want to say hello.

5 out of 5 stars Super Helpful Book on Entertainment Industry.......2002-08-15

I work at a Production company and a lot of contracts we hand to outside lawyers, but this is a good tool for me because it goes into details and discusses each point in a contract. This is something I'd love to have had many years ago, when I just got started in the business, and now that I have it, I am learning a lot of new things. There isn't any other book out there- quite like this.

This book is a must have for managers in theater. It covers most of the typical contractual issues managers face. This book's biggest asset is the CD. The CD allows you to download and modify virtually all the documents included in the book.
You need to have a bit more than a cursory understanding of the legal principles behind some of the language in the agreements, but if you have that knowledge you will refer to this book time and again.

The Pocket Lawyer is designed to help producers reduce legal costs by providing the vital information needed to make informed decisions on the legal aspects of film, video, and TV productions.

This is a really good book with much info, and at a really good price, too!

5 out of 5 stars A Law Student's Perspective.......2007-08-01

Mr. Crowell has done the art and legal worlds a great service by distilling so many critical issues of intellectual property into an enjoyable and widely informative format. The index and chapter systems make quick searching easy; and the humorous and humble prose let's you relax while learning. The demystification of legalese is not an easy task, but it's much needed, and Mr. Crowell has thrown a valuable contribution into the fray. Being a film and music artist, as well as a law student, Mr. Crowell's work is a must read for any with a similar background; and it goes a long way to supporting those artists who seem to underestimate themselves when it comes to the legal side of their creative endeavors. The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers empowered me, and I'm sure it will do the same for countless others.

5 out of 5 stars Good Legal Advice Has Never Come So Cheap!.......2007-06-16

This book has allowed me to craft a sound legal structure around my ideas, and my film making has become a true business venture. "Pocket Lawyer" has already saved me from several minor blunders, like not posting a Notice Release when shooting in public, and it will undoubtedly save the day in bigger ways as my projects grow. Where was this book when I was in film school? Valuable legal advice has never come so cheap--well worth the $21.75.

5 out of 5 stars Commentary.......2007-06-12

The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers: A legal Toolkit for Independent Producers is a perfect text book for film students, and for anyone wishing to get a quick grasp on the complexities of the legal business of film financing, producing and selling too. It's an easy read, and a great reference book for Instructors and independent Film Producers / Filmmakers.Il Giardino Armonico

5 out of 5 stars You need this book!.......2007-04-14

This is an outstanding tool for anyone and everyone working in film. If you're a creative artist, it's easy to forget that making a film is a business venture--and one you hope will turn a profit! "The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers" is a welcome wake-up call. Thomas Crowell gently reminds readers to protect their interests and keep an eye on the bottom line at all times. If thoughts of "business" and "protecting your interests" make your eyes glaze over, have no fear. "The Pocket Lawyer" is a breeze to work with. It's clearly written, full of helpful examples, and anticipates every question you could have. The book follows the entire process of making a film, from forming a production company to distributing a completed film. Each chapter tells you what to expect at every step, and how to deal with it. Personally, I found the sections translating copyright law into simple English massively useful. Also, the book includes a stripped-down "law library" that gives filmmakers a primer in intellectual property and labor law. Whether you're a novice screenwriter wannabe (like me!) or a seasoned independent producer, you need this book! "The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers" is indispensable.
