I guess I thought it would give me a laugh or two based on some of highlighted phases, "Jews for Jesus" etc. However, it was yet another comedian trying to join the Lewis Black, Daily Show or Bill Maher bandwagon of political humor. Too bad this comedian is not as funny nor has diverse content.
After the first few pages the book simply turns into a complaining/vent session of everything which the authors deeply disagrees with - let me summarize:
Any Jew who is against Israel
Any political organization against Israel politics
Any person who remotely supports the Holocaust
Any non-Conservative
and silly jokes to those in media which require teasing (ie. Al Sharpton, Michael Moore, Jesse Jackson, Britney, etc.)

There are many other comedian with similar content and jokes but they are really funny whereas this book just takes a small segment of its victim and highlights it as their basis for existence.

Save yourself money and time. If you want something funny watch a truly funny comedian. Allow Jackie to perform on Broadway and advise him to keep the stand-up act going but stay away from the typewriter.

Perhaps I'm just getting too old... I can vaguely remember back in the early days of television when some of what Jackie Mason said was actually funny.

But the only way this book could been any worse would have been if Alan Derschowitz had done the editing and Ann Coulter's face had been on the cover. (Although, to be fair, Neither Mr. Mason nor Mr. Felder is very much less unappealing to behold than Ms. Coulter)

Still, this book did add something to my store of knowledge. Based upon the definitions given in the introduction, I can now state with some authority that:

1. Anyone who either buys a book written by a faded borscht belt comedian and a celebrity divorce lawyer for more than 39 cents on a remainders table OR takes seriously anything contained in said book - is a schmuck.

2. Anyone who actually writes such a book as this one AND puts his own name on it - is a putz.

Imagine if you will that you are at a dinner. Your host is a rather amusing Republican; and he may have been a liberal in his youth, but that only makes his current political stance all that more forceful. He begins with a few light jokes, some witty repartee and then drags you into a longwinded and ultimately self-righteous sermon about everything that is wrong with America. Now imagine that he's Jewish or at least knows enough Yiddish to fake it. That's the essence of this book.

As with Goldberg's 39 People Screwing Up America, this is one of those books from the Republican Shriek Factory. Forget about Bush committing us to a fruitless war and practically legitimizing torture. Forget about the blank check that Bush got from a Republican Congress to keep this war going. Hell forget about Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, FEMA or Ken Lay from Enron. No, in this world, the worst human being is Al Gore (who is lying - so sayeth the ancient Jewish comedians without humor) and Al Sharpton. Oh and of course we can't have a book like this without slamming on Barbara Streisand.

Even Goldberg threw in a few personalities that we could all agree on - like Barbara Walters dumbing down the news.

But this book is just a combination of smug and defensive from beginning to end. And even better, it's new but it reads like an old NY Post article. These guys still think that Bill Clinton's sex scandal is more odious than Bush's war. Only no one died in that sex scandal and at this point I thought no one cared. ANd Bill Maher? Yep, he said that the 9/11 terrorists weren't cowardly. The factg that bravery and cowardice have really nothing to do with their actions is second nature. Nope, you have to call your enemies cowardly. The words "evil" or "vicious" are only accurate; so why bother with them?

This is a book that was old before its time. Had it been published in the early part of the decade when Bush could do no wrong and his willing cheerleaders sang his praises, it might have been a hit; especially among those who think that throwing in a Yiddish word or two is the height of comedy (ie. goyim). Now it's just sad.

Lighthearted approach to some heavyweight topics. It's a very quick read about dozens of people, places, organizations, countries, governments that don't measure up to he way Mason and Felder's look at the world and the way it oughta' be. Mason does comedy standup about world events, so maybe he's qualified in his contributions to the written slam fest. -But who's this Raoul Felder? -A "celebrity divorce lawyer," reads the book jacket. One might ask: "What's his world-view expertise?"

In any event, the book's stacked with truly cutting opinions and soft-touch humor about personalities from Barbra Streisand, Barry Bonds, Bill Clinton, Ray Nagin, and even Pablo Picasso...to entities like the NCAA, Afghanistan, the French, and the New York Times. Plus criticisms about automatic toilets and sinks? True, this topic has not been overlooked. The casual funniness balances the biting lampooning in ways that only Mason can effect...without venom or hate. You can sort of tell which parts were Mason's and which were Felders.

Regularly, they parlay a compelling "Jewish" flavor to the work by including references to Jewish events or people or words. The authors often pepper in terms like feh, meshpucha, yenta, et. al. I don't exactly know the meaning of these words; but somehow, they worked for this reader. Ah, but, then, too, the title of the book is "Schmucks!" What should we expect? Is it light Jewish humor packaged for Gentiles. [The copyright for this book is by Krapatakin? Might there be some kind of hidden humor here only the writers would know about... (!?)]

Mason and Felder confront the notion that "...just because a person is absolutely first-class in one field does not mean [he/] she should be respected in another," the point of a couple of pages on Susan Sarandon. Maybe this says it all, as "Schmucks!" is all over the board, definitely overly-political [however lite] in its scope, and is only marginally amusing. It's Not at all "material that will leave you crying with laughter," as the dust cover promises; but it is interesting, with a lot of "yeah, I agree with that" reader reaction.

When a news maker makes themself a special spot on page six daily by their actions...They are SCHMUCKS!

Jackie Mason, humorist, Comedian and winner for his one man Broadway show "The World According to Me", takes on this challenge of pointing out the "Schmucks" of the world in this abridged CD.

In someways, this seem like an updating of some of "World". He takes on such Schmucks like Bill & Hillary Clinton, Jews for Jesus, Madonna and France with his pointed humor. His wit is razor sharp and so are some of the points he takes on.

Does he make sense? More than you will know. This is more than comedy, it is a lesson in why people do stupid things. His viewpoints make for good listening

Jackie, all I hope is I am not on next year's list!

Jackie Mason and Raoul Felder combine comedy and common sense and mix it with a whole lotta chutzpeh to stick it to shmuck after filfthy schmuck. You can practically hear Mason's voice speaking from the pages, laying insult upon insult in joyous irreverance for the self-appointed schmucks in the world. Doesn't matter if you're dead or alive, if you're a shmuck, you can't even hide in the dirt. Rich schmucks, dead schmucks, globo-schmucks and even dumb shmucks from Yasser Arafat to Katie Couric get lambasted. From now on, whenever Al Sharpton's face pops up on your TV screen, you'll be shouting "praise the lard". At the end you'll wonder, "If these guys are all schmucks, what in the world does it take to become a putz?"

4 out of 5 stars Brutal encounter in Glen Ridge........2007-01-27

I live less than a block away from Glen Ridge, NJ, so naturally, I was very interested to read this disturbing account describing high school jocks sexually assaulting, in a brutal manner, a retarded girl in the basement of the house where two of the perpetrators lived. I still recall reading about the incident in the news (at the time I lived in NYC), and wondering how kids could be so cruel.

In "Our Guys," Bernard Lefkowitz does an admirable job at covering some central themes surrounding the harrowing incident: i.e. the so-called alleged "consent" issue of the victim; the culpability of those who witnessed the event but did nothing to try to stop it; the ostracism of the one student who revealed what happened; the "jock culture" encouraged by Glen Ridge; the town's propensity to look the other way, and give every benefit of the doubt (and even support) "our guys," even when it was clear that something very ugly happened in that basement; the breaks that the perpetrators received from police and the Courts; the defense lawyers who attempted to portray the victim as a Lolita who was in control of the circumstances (one lawyer bizarrely repeatedly referred to boys being "magnetized" to her, and visa versa, when she developed breasts) and portray their clients as basically good kids, but "boys will be boys."

The book reads like a train wreck -- ugly and disturbing, but you can't look away. Lefkowitz, who completely convinces the reader that a crime certainly took place, isn't shy about making very definitive conclusions, which, at times, I took issue with. First, I can certainly understand the school's position in waiting until all the facts were known before taking any steps against the students in question. Let's not forget that Duke University recently came under fire for jumping to conclusions in the ongoing case involving the Lacrosse players and a stripper who initially accused three of them of rape. In the Duke case, of course, the "victims" appear to be the accused, and the perpetrator both the stripper and an overzealous, unethical prosecutor (it often just depends on what the facts eventually reveal).

Second, I don't think that Lefkowitz's attack on the "values" of the town of Glen Ridge, or the so-called "jock culture" in general, are entirely fair. The Scherzer twins and Archer Brothers, were, pure and simple, bad kids. You take away this one incident, and you would still say that. The fact that they were decent athletes and good looking may have contributed to their ability to get away what they did, but those qualities certainly don't cause one to be bad.

Third, some of things Lefkowitz describes are questionable in my mind. For instance there's a three day party at a classmate's house, where the drinking is rampant, and the students basically destroy the house. No neighbor calls the police for an entire weekend in a quiet suburb? How is that possible? A boy who repeatedly exposes himself during class and no disciplinary actions are taken? Most of the girls mentioned in the book seem to have weak characters and are completely under the spell of these boys. Where are those girls who despise these guys, as I'm sure their must have been?

Any parent of children of high school or pre-high school children will be frightened and horrified by "Our Guys." However, knowing a number of people in Glen Ridge, I can tell you that when they discuss the high school, they're proud of the academics, and athletics rarely comes up. Maybe things have changed. Or maybe Lefkowitz tended to over-exaggerate one of his central themes: that the Glen Ridge "culture" somehow created these bad kids who committed this, and other terrible acts.

Horrific tale of the brutal 1989 gang rape of a mentally disabled teen committed by a group of New Jersey high school star athletes and a condemnation of the bullying and jock culture that spawned it.

This true story tells how the local community, the school board and the police sought to cover up and minimize their actions by demonizing the victim.

Read this one and wonder how certain people can ever sleep at night.

A disturbing journalistic account of a gang rape of a mentally retarded girl by athletes in an upper-class New Jersey town. Bernard Lefkowitz doesn't just report the "facts" of the crime, as in many books in the "true crime" genre. He also analyzes the culture of an upper-class community to illustrate the masculine norms that fuel such crimes and hamper reporting and prosecution. Indeed, one of the most astonishing aspects of this case was that the elite circle of teenagers at the local high school all knew about the crime for many months before it was finally reported - by an African American boy who became a paraiah as a result. The book is incredibly well researched; Lefkowitz (a journalism professor at Columbia University) obviously immersed himself in the case and the community. [...]

Beyond being an utterly gripping read, Bernard Lefkowitz's 'Our Guys' is an incredibly powerful indictment of the perverse cultural values that permeated Glen Ridge, New Jersey, in the late 1980s--and that continue to be America's dominant values. The bored, pampered, arrogant, sociopathic jocks (from affluent families) who gang-raped a mentally retarded schoolgirl for their amusement didn't just fall out of the sky. These evil young men were the pure products of a deranged culture that sanctifies (white) male violence, domination, winning, and hedonistic pleasures as some sort of birthright.

One of the boys in this case never went to trial because the victim's family and the victim herself were worn out by the process of trial and the community harassment that went with it. You see, the community sided with the good boys in the case, not with the victim---she was 'different' after all. Richie Corcoran went on to join the Army, despite his record, with the full understanding of the military. When he came home from a tour in Afghanistan to his estranged wife, he tried to kill her and her new boyfriend, and then himself. In the latter he succeeded. He was a wife beater and a rapist, and he was the product of his town and his father, who was a cop. Wonder what that guy's view of rape victims was?

"Our Guys" peels back the layers and layers of privilege that enabled these boys to abuse girls with impunity while the town said 'boys will be boys' and girls were given a choice of either submitting or desperately pretending it wasn't happened. The boys got bolder and bolder, and finally they were charged with rape. One has to wonder if there were other victims at other times. Much like the case of Greg Haidl, the sheriff's son who gang-raped an unconscious girl, this case revealed how dangerous privilege really is to women and girls.

This book is not the usual buddhist book, however interesting they may be. I found every single one of the essays to be important reading, and written by a recognized expert in his field of specialization. There are numerous schematics and visual aids employed, which helps to reify some of the key ideas. There is a section on how some neurotic people use spirituality to reinforce their poor personal skills by isolating further. There is a section on how the mind falls into ruts, believing itself to be acting purposefully when it is really ricocheting around like a pinball, and yet another section on failure to find an entry point into the world, (and vice versa).

This is intellectual and incisive reading, which may spark massive change.

At under $20, this book is a gem.

Gay Watson, et.al. edit The Psychology Of Awakening, which provides an important survey of Buddhism and science in daily lives. Essays consider Buddhist influences in psychology and social settings alike.

    This book tries to explain why many gay men have the sexual fantasies and behaviors they have. And it does an excellent job, particularly from an Kettelhack's untrained eye not being a psychotherapist himself.
    This is the first and only book like this for gay men. Many books exist like this for heterosexuals such as Arousal: The Secret Logic of Sexual Fantasies by Michael Bader, Erotic Mind by Jack Morin and In the Garden of Desire by Wendy Maltz, to name a few.
    Great job in doing the detective work on trying to figure out where the types of specific sexual behaviors and fantasies gay men have come from!

    As I was reading this book, I felt that I should be out in the wilderness, in some sort of native american dress (no offence to native americans), with a drum and a speaking stick, expressing my maleness. The author's attitude of men will be men and they cannot but help to act in an irresponsible manner is limited, insulting, and dangerous. Is this a mergering of the mens' movement and the gay right's movement? Are we as shallow and predatory as the stereotype portrays us? According to Guy Kettlehack, I guess we are. Lawrence

    Society really makes it hard being gay, even in today's enlightened times where we are seeing sitcom characters come out of the closet and openly gay candidates elected to political office. For many gay men, the journey isn't over when they've accepted themselves as being proud of who they are. The next hurdle is a deeper insecurity over sex and their participation in and enjoyment of it.

    Kettelhack's discourse, a part of his own process of self-discovery, serves to make gay men stand back and try to throw away the bulk of society's anti-sex conditioning while they evaluate the role of sex and aggression in their own lives.

    There are cogent arguments presented that show the amount, place, and aggressiveness of every gay man's sexual encounters are not up for judgement by anyone other than that man and his sexual partner. This is very a refreshing outlook in a current society that continues to self-censor it's most basic sexual instincts, even in the more "liberated" gay community. In fact, Kettelhack's book shows that sometimes members of the gay community can be even more self-censoring in their sex lives for fear of what straight society thinks.

    Dancing Around the Volcano doesn't advocate the sole position that all sex is good under all circumstances. It makes steps to educate the reader that decisions about one's sexual habits are can only be made by the person and their *honest* and *true* feelings, and should not be influenced by what society perceives as pathology. Kettelhack demonstrates that each person can be different and everyone is free to make their own decisions. Through case studies, examples are given of men releasing themselves from the burdens of society's mores on gay sex, as well as examples of men who decide they are honestly for themselves pursuing an unhealthy sex life and decide to change it.

Biologist Guy Brown offers the first popular introduction to the cutting edge science of bioenergetics, one that provides a new understanding of the energy of life. We all know that something is happening to our energy levels on a sugar "rush," or a coffee "high," or following that afternoon nap, but now everyone can understand the smoothly operating human-energy machine, thanks to Brown's lucid overview of how energy courses through us at both the micro level of our cells and the macro level of our behavior.

        At the micro level, the fundamental energy of our bodies is the frenetic movement within our cells that is powered by body heat. The nucleus, the mitochondria, and all ten thousand tiny bimolecular machines that fabricate and transport molecules around the cell do not sit still within the cell membrane but move about as if they were bubblegum balls in a vibrating gum machine. This movement puts every element of the cell in contact with every other every few seconds and enables the energy of the cell to flow. The energy comes from mitochondria, those strange, genetically distinct little beasts that heat our bodies and consume all the food we eat and oxygen we breathe. Brown has completed breakthough work on mitochondria and explains how they invaded our cells hundreds of millions of years ago.         The carbohydrates, fats, and proteins we eat constitute mitochondria's main fuels, but our brains run only on glucose -- a peculiar and even toxic chemical when there is too much of it in our blood, as any diabetic knows well. This energy source of the mind is in very limited supply in our bodies because we can store so little of it. Brown suggests that we tend to eat too much fat because we are designed to stop being hungry when we've eaten enough of the carbohydrates from which we make glucose.         The field of biology neglects bioenergetics more and more every year, as molecular approaches to whatever is fashionable reveal "hot" new signalling pathways and genetic mechanisms. The author bucks that trend and gives us an explanation of bioenergetics in a clear, gentle and understandable way. The conversational and informal style of writing allows the author to present topics as dry as electron transport and proton motive force in a way that is more than understandable, it is engaging and actually kind of fun! Brown never lets us forget that metabolic processes are amazing, awe-inspiring and inspirational. While Brown's coverage of basic physiology is excellent, later chapters get into areas (mental energy, etc.) where we really have a lot to learn. These chapters are necessarily heavier on speculation. There is a big and excellent appendix that presents a brief history of bioenergetics, and sources for further reading are provided.

        I have read no book better written or more informative than "Energy of Life" - I have also met with a teaching colleague of Guy Brown, Aubrey De Grey, one of the world's foremost geneticists and life extension specialists, and he affirmed the awesome intellect and formidable communication skills of Professor Brown.. You will understand more than you would have thought possible about the energy of life once you've read the approximately 250 pages, and you'll also understand the conditions necessary to promote the energy in your life. This book will imbue you with a clear understanding of the constituents of your own life's energy. Many thanks to Guy Brown for such helpful, clear exposition on such a complex subject. This book is considered, I believe, a popularization because of Brown's lucid writing, - and not due to any science sacrificed for readability.

        The "Energy of Life" was full of technical information on mitochondria. Yet, the most practical information was simple. Guy C. Brown told me exactly what I wanted to know, if you want more energy now, do what you like to do. It sounds ridiculously easy, but it works. The problem is most of us most do things we hate. So, I guess we either need to start liking what we do, or do more of what we like, in order to have more energy. See if your doctor will write you a prescription for a new job instead of Zoloft the next time you complain of depression and fatigue. That would be the "Energy of Life" cure at least.
