This newly revised edition of The Promise of Mediation offers a wealth of new information on the priniciples of transformative conflict intervention. Many readers may not be aware that the revised edition actually contains almost entirely new material, reflecting new understandings of transformative mediation that have developed since the publication of the first edition. Bush and Folger offer new specifics for practice in the transformative framework of mediation through a carefully analyzed case study, in which we can see details of the "small steps" of conflict transformation. They also discuss the impact that the transformative movement has had on the field as a whole, and debunk some common misconceptions about the transformative framework. I have especially enjoyed the last chapter, which addresses, more completely than anything in the first edition, the deep underlying values that have led to the articulation of a transformative vision for mediation, and looks at possibilities for the future of the field.
This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone interested in mediation, conflict, or just the interaction of human beings.
A Huge Step Forward in the Art and Science of Mediation.......2004-11-17
I'm grateful to the authors for the significant advance in mediation thinking that this book represents. This new edition has the potential to move the entire field toward a deeper, more powerful understanding. With the original edition, and again with this one, Bush and Folger have provided great clarity to a topic that, until now, has been muddled. While other mediators and writers succumb to the pressures of conflict and become part of the problem, these authors instruct us on how to remain true to the most important principles that lead to deep healing of human conflict. If I had the need, I would only hire a mediator who had read, studied, understood and embraced this book.

As a licensed private investigator and an avid reader of investigative texts, I can personally attest that this text successfully meets the true test of value for investigative texts - it imparts the reader with ability to effectively employ its teachings. Mr. Yeschke has done an excellent job of properly articulating the techniques/procedures necessary to perform effective interviews.
The text is a perfect combination of real, practical, and effective techniques/procedures and actual case examples. The text goes into great detail in building the basic foundation of effective interviewing skills, such as understanding human psychology (in deception), proper interview preparation, successfully employing the self-fulfilling prophecy, tactical concepts, evidence collection, public vs. private sector investigations, the interview process, controlling the interview environment, proper phrasing of questions (closed vs. open questions), and evaluating the evidence obtained from the interview. The text then demonstrates practical application of these skills using actual case examples. I highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn effective investigative interviewing skills.
As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

If you are interested in conducting serious and professional investigative interviews this is one of the first books you should pick up. It talks about numerous interviewing techniques on how to extract vital information from the person your interviewing without asking "leading questions". I got over 5 pages of notes out of the first few chapters alone.

I have been a police officer for 5 years, and have received alot of training in the police field. In 5 years I have found that there is very minimal training in obtaining confessions from suspects. Obtaining voluntary confessions from suspects is a very important task in today's modern world. I found this book to be very informative and it explains to the reader the many parts to an interview before leading into an interogation. This book also also explains that showing empathy works better at obtaining confessions than the old methods of coersion. I enjoyed the book and am excited to get to apply its teachings in my interviews. I believe that the methods taught in this book are worth while and will work if you are patient and use them properly

An excellent book.......2007-01-01
In this fifth edition of his acclaimed text on law enforcement ethics, Edwin Delattre takes on some of the toughest moral problems facing police officers these days. And he does so with a great amount of clarity and tact.
Although some chapters probably do go on a bit longer than they should, this can be forgiven due to the amount of interesting content contained therein. Delattre has been teaching police ethics courses and working with law enforcement officers for over twenty years, so he definitely knows what he's talking about. He addresses difficult moral and ethical questions in a very succinct manner, without leaving the reader feel as if they are "left hanging," so to speak. His arguments are clear and highly readable, and above all else, they make sense!
I'd have to say that my favorite chapters are Chapter 9: Illegal Narcotics--Moral Issues and Public Policy (in which the author examines both sides of the dead horse drug legalization argument and reaches a very sensible conclusion), Chapter 15: Fatalism, Microcosms, and Therapeutic Reductions, and Chapter 17: Police, The O.J. Simpson Trial, and Race (which examines the Simpson trial in considerable detail, as well as the implications of the verdict). That said, every chapter in the book offers some wonderful insights.
This is highly recommended reading for anyone even remotely interested in law enforcement and, in particular, for those who have taken an interest in how some tough ethical issues that face police officers can be resolved.
