Book Description
Demonstrates the interplay and interdependence of the Federal Rules of Evidence to reveal more of their character as an integrated code of evidence. There are, for serious students and practitioners, frequent citations to authorities. The entire text has been carefully reviewed, resulting in both substantive and editorial revisions. Subjects that are brought up-to-date include admission of scientific and probabilistic evidence, rape shield and related statutes, hearsay, and constitutional evidence doctrine. Use as a supplement to an evidence course, as a principal course book, or as a basic text assigned prior to the study of advanced evidence of trial advocacy.
Customer Reviews:
As good as being in a class with Lilly.......2005-12-19
I'm actually not just saying that: I just finished taking Evidence with Graham Lilly, and his (excellent) book captures his lectures almost perfectly. I'm shocked that such a clear, lucid explanation of the Federal Rules of Evidence (as well as their evolution and major common law departures) fits in such a tiny, succint book.
One caveat: HE JUST FINISHED WRITING A NEW EDITION, so that should be available soon. This will be useful since certain things have changed since the 1996 (3rd) edition was released (for example, the amendment to the FRE allowing the use of the hearsay statement itself as acceptable but not sufficient grounds for finding a conspiracy exists for the hearsay exemption).
Thank God for Graham Lilly.......2003-03-21
I recently took evidence with one of the worst teachers in the history of the legal profession. Thank god Lilly's book is clear, thorough, and resourceful.
Solid Book From A Students Perspective........2001-07-11
I found this book very useful both during law school and at my summer clerkships. While most states, or at least a good portion, have adopted something similar to the Federal rules on evidence, this book provides help understanding that tradition as well as the common law. This book does a really good job of providing a summation of either without proving too difficult to learn from or to sit with for extended periods of time. The only concern I would raise is if your state or the one you practice in goes clearly one way it may be better to buy the specific hornbook for your state. But for me, I'm not sure where I am going to end up for the bar so reading both sides has helped me tremendously.
Book Description
For more than 25 years, Burton's Legal Thesaurus has been the one-of-a-kind reference tool in a field where the precision and accuracy of language is vitally important. The latest edition of this classic resource adds 1,000 new words, terms, and expressions to the roughly 7,000 already present, including nontechnical words regularly used by attorneys.
“Prepared by lawyers, comprehensive, up-to-date, easy to use.”-American Bar Association Journal
Customer Reviews:
Useful book.......2007-09-16
The book is very useful. However, the Latin phrases are probably no longer necessary in the U.S. legal practice.
I've noticed one error that is carried over from one edition to the next: in Index under the entry "in error" look for word "fallacioadmit." I speculate that a portion of text disappeared and fallacious was merged with admit. The words that follow admit do not appear to belong in the "in error" article.
Important book. The "Roget's" of the legal profession........2007-05-08
This book, now in its fourth edition, is an essential companion to Black's Law Dictionary, Garner's Legal Usage book, and other essential legal reference books. Great for law students, lawyers, judges, paralegals/legal assistants, and just about anyone else dealing with legal language. This book gives alternatives to stilted, overused, and misused, language. Worth the price (especially if one compare it on a site like Nextag, Shopzilla, and others).
Very Helpful Product.......2005-09-26
This is the legal thesaurus that all my law professors suggested. So far it has been very helpful in research and writing.
Relied on daily at work.......2003-05-17
Next to case law, I find Burton's Legal Thesaurus indispensible in writing appellate briefs. I only wish it were available in a downloadable form for use with my word processing program.
Indispensable Tool for Your Legal Writing Kit.......2000-06-17
"Good luck," my employer wished as he handed me a plane ticket and a tome of a background packet. I was leaving on a critical six-week business trip to an alien state in the midwest. No problem - except that five days prior the law review had accepted me as one of three evening division 2Ls for candidacy and my first case abstracts were due in twenty days. Hmmm . . .
From my hotel room, I scanned, identified, analyzed, condensed, reviewed, and rewrote the abstracts. Then did it again. And again. And again. But I was missing something. I was missing that "oomph" that propels a reader when reading legal material. And I didn't know what to do.
I decided to take a "creative" break down at the local (bookstore). Of course, I immediately gravitated to the law section of the store and, before you could say "double espresso, please," I had found it! Burton's Legal Thesaurus.
I opened the pages and my heart fluttered. Over 5,000 entries, legal synonyms for any legal term that came to mind, definitions, an overview of federal "plain language" requirements, associated legal concepts, and the list goes on! I wiped away a tear.
I rushed back to my hotel room and my fingers began flying over the laptop. My abstracts sang with power and precision! I could feel the reader compelled - nay, helpless - to turn the page! Burton's Legal Thesaurus had saved the day! I was now a jurisprudence scholar!
Eh, not really. But it really helped out when I didn't have access to my usual materials. However, one thing of which I can assure you, I'll be using this thesaurus for the rest of my career. If you've ever tried to write a legal document with a conventional thesaurus, you've probably felt the same way I did - close, but not close enough. But where do I find "close enough"? Read some more cases? Subscribe to a half dozen law journals? Hang out with the professors? This book definitely dispenses with that problem. You'll find everything you need to write a work filled with persuasion and vigor contained within its pages. If you're not that creative with legal lingo (as I, obviously, am not), you need to order it now. Frankly, you're putting yourself at a serious disadvantage if you don't.

Book Description
"Physical evidence cannot be wrong; it cannot perjure itself; it cannot be wholly absent. Only its interpretation can err. Only human failure to find it, study and understand it, can diminish its value." -Presiding Judge, Harris v U.S., 331 U.S. 145 (1947) HOW TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE CRIME SCENE WHILE CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION First Unit Responder: A Guide to Physical Evidence Collection for Patrol Officers is a training guide and reference for patrol officers and criminal investigators, who conduct preliminary investigations of crime scenes, to aid in identification, collection, and booking of physical evidence. Written by a veteran of 24 years of law enforcement, the book stresses the importance of understanding the critical nature of physical evidence and preservation of the crime scene as part of the case against a criminal defendant. This book is an important tool for police academies that train recruits and veteran patrol officers, as well as for students of criminal justice who seek guidelines for proper collection and handling of physical evidence.

First Unit Responder.......2007-01-11
Very good and detailed. A good compilation and overview if you have read or use other crime scene guidelines. It hits the highlights and provides good review tests.
"Excellent start for novice or those interested in CSI".......2002-04-08
Mark R. Hawthorne's "First Unit Responder," CRC Press 1999, ISBN 0-9493-002-1, is a 6 chapter 98-page guide book for uniformed officers working in the field who frequently are the first to arrive for a potential crime scene investigation(CSI).
Hawthorne gives us an easy-to-read introduction to basic CSI response that includes definition of various physical evidence characteristics (individual versus class), implementation of CSI response protocol (ARISN), identification & documentation of evidence, evidence collection (do's & don'ts), fingerprint/glove appreciation, case review with ADA and testimony tips for the non-specialist officer & a 12-page illustrated appendix showing evidentiary items. Each chapter didactic is followed with a (dozen or so) basic question & answer section with explanations.
The author's impressive credentials in both field and teaching experiences helped condense important basic CSI issues into a short and easily-read synopsis that includes 20 good bibliographic entries and a thorough 6-page index. A few trivial grammatical flaws are readily discharged, but difficult to justify given computers with spell-checkers, etc.
Rookies or veterans, Cops to firefighters to EMT's.......2001-04-18
As a law enforcement instructor at a police training facility, I found this book to be fantastic for the new recruits we train. As a retired police officer/Crime Scene Analyst, I also realized it would be great for some veteren officers and non-law enforcement personnel to review. Mark Hawthorne has kept the technical information on an easily understandable level. He has covered, in 90 pages, what would take hours of personal instruction. I found the test questions and answers extremely helpful in preparing reviews. This book can be picked up by the patrol officer, and if READ, could furnish much of the information to properly document most any crime scene. I would recommend this book to any basic law enforcement instructor or new police officer.

Book Description
Now available in a paperback edition, law and technology guru Richard Susskind, author of bestselling The Future of Law, brings together in one volume eleven significant essays on the application of IT to legal practice and the administration of justice, including key topics such as knowledge management and the impact of e-commerce and electronic government. This edition includes a brand new Preface, in which Susskind puts forward his views on the burst of the dotcom bubble, offers an extension to his Grid to cover in-house lawyers, and comments on the next big things in this area: e-learning, document assembly, online dispute resolution, e-mail management, and matter-centric systems.
Customer Reviews:
A young father for Legal Technology.......2006-07-19
If you want to know what is happening in the Legal Technology field, please read this book.
A prescient analysis of where law will soon be.......2002-03-13
What impact is the Internet revolution having on the practice of law? If you read most mainstream legal publications you would think the answer is very little. Or you might sense that most of the change has occurred already. Richard Susskind understands the larger forces that are going to dictate how law is practiced in the immediate future. His explanation is cogent, well thought-out, and compelling.
The idea that market forces will compel lawyers to provide better services to a larger class of people at a lower cost is not something that most lawyers want to hear. Of course, travel agents didn't want to hear that people were going to start booking their own travel online either (same with stock brokers).
If you have read and enjoyed the Cluetrain Manifesto then check this book out, even if you only have a passing interest in the law. If you are a lawyer and expect to be practicing for another ten years then to ignore the ideas expressed in Susskind's book is dangerous.
Masterful Insights Into Legal Tech Strategies.......2001-06-10
This wonderful book is very different from most legal technology books, which concentrate on tactics: which word processor to choose, which case management system is best, how to secure an intranet. This book concentrates instead on the strategic implications of new technology, especially the Internet, on the legal profession.
One of the highlights of the book is helping lawyers understand why large accounting/consulting firms are a threat, and how lawyers can compete more effectively. The book is also good at showing ways to do what consultant Tom Peters has called "baking a new pie." Instead of merely competing more intensely for known existing markets, create a new market that you will dominate.
This is the most important book I have ever read about the impact of technology on law firms.

Book Description
Does the gunshot residue reveal how far from the target a weapon was fired? Is there any trace evidence to prove the accused handled a specific firearm? What is the likely behaviour of a ricocheting bullet? Do the marks on a bullet prove categorically that it was fired from a particular weapon? Handbook of Firearms and Ballistics tackles these and many more issues in a clear and accessible manner and is essential reading for all defence and prosecution practitioners, the judiciary, forensic experts, police forces and all those involved in this fascinating area. The judges' view: "For those judges who have to try crimes involving firearms it will be of great assistance to have available in one volume such a comprehensive review of the subject
" His Honour Judge Neil Denison QC, Common Serjeant of London, UK "In a world where real expertise becomes increasingly significant it is important to have a standard against which to judge that expertise. The book, I believe, will help mark such a standard." His Honour Judge Duncan S. Kilgour, District Court, Hong Kong "I am very impressed. For many years I have wanted and needed a book such as this.
if one reads, marks and inwardly digests the whole, there will not be much, if anything, about firearms which one does not know." Judge Henry Pownoll QC, Central Criminal Court, London, UK The practitioners' view: "
for the first time it becomes possible to understand the bases upon which the connections between firearms and ammunition and between each/either of them and a wound or damage may be established. Counsel and solicitors practising in our criminal courts will find that this book is an essential read." Michael Hill QC, Barrister, London, UK "In the forensic context I have encountered many of the problems examined in detail in this useful handbook
and in my view no practitioner in this field should be without it." Ronald Thwaites QC, Barrister, London, UK The forensic scientist's view: "
the text should be readily comprehensible to lawyers, laymen and scientists alike. This book should be compulsory reading for all lawyers dealing with cases involving firearms. It will also appeal generally to anyone with an interest in forensic science and specifically to those with an interest in firearms." Dr David Clarke, Chief Chemist, Forensic Science Division, Hong Kong Government Laboratory The firearms experts' view: "It is quite obvious that Mr Heard is a very experienced firearms examiner
His ability to explain and simplify difficult reference material will be of great value within the scientific and legal communities. I would strongly recommend that this book be available to every practising firearms examiner as well as laboratory directors and others interested in this field of science." James E. Hamby, Laboratory Director, Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, USA "Brian Heard's clear writing style disperses the mystery that has traditionally surrounded forensic ballistics
" Bill Harriman, Head of Firearms, British Association for Shooting and Conservation
Customer Reviews:
Handbook of Firearms and Ballistics.......2006-12-12
Very well written, easy to read, simple clear pictures. First third of the book talks about general knowledge of firearms, ammunition and ballistics. How they work, types, nomenclature, etc. If you are firearms enthusiast or you work with firearms this part does not give you to much new information. If you looking to get more knowledge about forensic ballistic the rest two thirds are more interesting. This book should be excellent for lawyers, police officers, judges and for anybody who needs to know more about this topic. Only one complaint: Too expensive for the info in this book. For about $120 you can get 3 or 4 books with much more information. Like example Firearms Investigation Identification and Evidence written by Hatcher, Jury and Weller.
Hanbook of Firearms and Ballistics.......1999-11-25
This book is a concise and incisive overview of the operation of various firearms and the testing procedures used to properly identify and match firearms to spent cartridges. It is written in an easy and effective style and is of use to the criminal practitioner engaged in the felony trials.
Book Description

United States is designed to be a general introduction to the structure and function of the legal system of the United States, and is especially useful for those readers who lack familiarity with fundamental establishments and practices.
