5 out of 5 stars Children's Writer's Market.......2007-04-04

As a writer in the juvenile field, I recommend Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market to all who are beginning children's authors. Writer's Market covers all kinds of publishing from books and magazines to textbooks and contests, including children's books. Most of it is not of interest to someone focused only on juvenile writing.
Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market is invaluable because it not only lists the many worldwide markets for children's books, but it gives specific information on writing for children, lists the types of books each publisher puts out, and includes tips by publishers on what they require and expect at their publishing house.
This is a book every beginning children's writer would do well to study long before they have completed a manuscript. Check it out at the library to see how helpful it is. If the library has no copy, suggest that it would be a great service to the public to add one to the shelves.

5 out of 5 stars The best source for the would be writer or illustrator........2007-03-24

I've recommended this book countless times for patrons during my twenty year library career and now I am using it for myself. Not only are there helpful, instructive articles by professionals about the publishing industry but the 750 listings help to narrow down the search for a publisher, rep or agent. It may seem daunting at first but the editors do most of the work for you. Getting work published is a send and wait game so sending the work to a firm ready to look at your work makes the process easier. CWIM includes professional conference as well as agents, art reps and of course publishers and magazines.

Anyone who is a Writer will tell you the Writer's Market is the bible and if they haven't, I am telling you now. This is a Children's Writers & Illustrators bible. Everything you will ever need to get started is all in this book. I am currently writing a children's book and will be illustrating it myself. I must credit this book for giving me the necessary resources. They even include tips from published Writiers to motivate you on your path to getting that manuscript out. It is easy to read, easy to find exactly what I am looking for in a compact size I can take anywhere. I absolutely love it! Thank you!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars this version is outdated!.......2007-09-16

Buy the 9 DVD set directly from the New Yorker at half the price. I discovered this AFTER I bought from Amazon and when I pointed this out, they were of no help. Amazon basically told me it was my problem - caveat emptor!

3 out of 5 stars 6 stars for content; 1 star for presentation.......2007-08-12

To have finger-tip access to the complete contents of the New Yorker magazine throughout its entire publication history, even with the inconvenience of swapping discs, is a dream come true. One cannot have any criticism that the content of this product is an incredible value--the asking price is entirely fair.

The proprietary client that users are forced to access the contents through, however, is among the worst pieces of software design I have ever seen. The various panes, for example, cannot be resized, so that the abstract view, in most cases, is cut off. The `Article Abstract' pane is always 756 pixels wide and 88 pixels high, no matter how long the abstract is. Only by clicking in the abstract pane and using the up and down arrows can one view the full text of the abstract.

The client was designed by Bondi Digital Publications, whose slick website proudly claims credit for it. Bondi's developers should be forced to crawl on their knees from Manhattan to Murray Hill to beg forgiveness for their programming sins. I purchased and installed the 1.1 DVD, but the client remains the same DOS 5.1-era obscenity it was before.

The index is also less than trustworthy. Touted by its developer, Innodata Isogen, as "99.995% accurate," it has, in fact, some gaping flaws. From a fairly thorough browse through most of 1933's issues, for example, I found that no material beyond page 40 of most issues was actually captured by the indexing engine. So, despite the fact that virtually every issue included a "Books" section, according to the index, only four 1933 issues contained this section (and only one in 1932 and only nine in 1931). Clifton Fadiman wrote most of the main reviews in the "Books" section in 1934, yet there is a gap from the 17 Feb to the 9 June issue where no author is credited. Such omissions mean that serious researchers should think twice before relying on the search tool. I suspect the true accuracy figure is under 95%, which is pretty poor by today's standards.

It's a real shame that the management of the New Yorker didn't put this product into the hands of a technical team of the caliber of the one that implemented their website. The net result of their poor choice of subcontractors is akin to taking the Hope Diamond and wrapping it up in a used Big Mac wrapper.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! A Great Gift for any New Yorker Fan!.......2007-05-24

First, I applaud the guys at the New Yorker for bringing this remarkable gift of the last 80 years on 8 CDs. You can reprint or print as often and as much as you want. I have to say that I didn't care for the book included. But this is truly a complete New Yorker with ads, indexes, authors, dates, subjects, etc. I have to say since I'm a big fan of Janet Flanner's who wrote Letters from Paris from 1925 to 1975. Fortunately, I don't have to spend a fortune seeking New Yorker magazines for a lot more money. It's easy to install and easier to use all the time. I love it. It's the perfect gift for anybody who loves to read, for any New Yorker fan, or anybody who has acquired the New Yorker Taste. It's not for everybody but it's for me.

I have to say that was the main purpose behind this purchase was the opportunity to have the magazine without collecting too much dust and space as magazines have been known to do. As a fan of Janet Flanner for the last couple of years, this complete New Yorker edition on dvd and book is fabulous and quite a bargain. I'm so glad that I got it and now I can print as much without having to go elsewhere to get the magazine editions. Janet Flanner was one of the most important voices of the last century and more so was that she was the voice of Paris from the American point of view from 1925 to 1975. Her name was synomous with New Yorker and the Letters from Paris edition. I am so happy to receive this wonderful item at a fraction of the price and be able to use it on my computer. I wonder what Janet would say about today's technology, the smoking ban everywhere but home, and the state of Paris, London, Rome, and New York City today. I won't say that Janet was a New Yorker because her heart was truly in Paris where she spent most of her life. We were very lucky to have her there reporting from 1925 until 1975. She was there between two World Wars. I think some of her finest writing came about during World War II and afterwards until she was no longer to write. I have to say that I think Paris changed after World War II. It wasn't so much about the lost generation of American expatriates like Flanner, her partner Solita Solano, Natalie Clifford Barney, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Beach etc. who relocated. Sure the hardcore expatriates like Flanner stayed behind but the change in Paris was obvious after the war. Nothing after the war was ever the same. In a way, all of Europe lost it's innocence during World War II and even Janet probably fondly remembered days before the war that ripped everybody apart. Nothing is for sure, nothing can last forever, maybe that's what Genet would say today.

Anyway, the product is excellent. There are a couple of pages missing in old issues but the quality is adequate. You get 80 years of print on 8 compact discs which I found accessible and easy to use on my computer. The first disc is to install the information which includes by author, subject, title, year, etc. This index is invaluable tool. It would also be a great addition to the schools for students to research. They have a wide variety of literature like cartoons, poems, short stories, non-fiction, profiles, reporter at large series etc. It would be a terrible shame not take the opportunity to buy this treasure.

5 out of 5 stars 20th century in a box!.......2007-05-13

5 out of 5 stars Making complex issues clear.......2004-12-24

This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.

The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.

Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Overall Disappointing.......2007-09-26

Based on the other Amazon reviews, I purchased this book. After reading it, and being thoroughly disappointed, I realized, on second glance, that most of the reviews here are from other authors, who seemed to give it the thumbs up.

I expected this book to tackle more issues with regard to eBooks, in terms of generation and advertising, and the information contained in this book on this subject was scant, to say the least. Most of the book addresses methods for promoting printed books, which is misleading (in my eyes) and conflicts with the words "eBook" and "Information Products", which appear on the front cover. Many of the ideas presented for advertising - TV, radio, seminars, etc., are well outside the bounds of the average author. Lots of regurgitated concepts that we've seen hundreds of times before in other books.

There are basically only 1 or 2 small chapters that are relevant to eBooks, and there are major omissions in that regard - no description of ClickBank (the pre-eminent leader in eBook distribution) other than a quick reference, and only a one page discussion of PPC advertising, which has to be addressed more thoroughly in this type of book.

I did find a couple of useful tidbits and website references, but it certainly didn't justify the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Guide - Excellent resource.......2007-09-20

From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur is a wonderful resource for anyone who sees the value in creating a passive income source from their current area of expertise - either hobby or profession. If you don't understand or see the value in becoming an Infopreneur, then this book is definitely for you.

The book is well written, organized and full of valuable information. It offers an easy to understand, step-by-step guide for the entrepreneur to transform their business and become an information marketer.

It is very easy for the entrepreneur to under estimate the market potential for their knowledge. Stephanie does an excellent job of illustrating how to take the knowledge we have acquired and to package it into a valuable product that can generate income on a passive basis. The internet has made it possible - actually easy - for anyone to package and sell their knowledge worldwide.

While it is often referred to as passive income, Stephanie is quick to point out that creating an informational product is simply the first step. If you are not willing to actively market your product/idea then you will have wasted a lot of time and energy in creating it. The income might be passive but there is this huge need for very active marketing. But do not despair. All the steps and instructions for effective marketing are in the book.

The book is full of hints, helpful tips and resources. I had read less than 30 pages when I was given a suggestion that made me put the book down and implement it. There are literally hundreds of helpful website addresses in the book. In addition there are profiles of successful infopreneurs, explaining what they do and how they did it.

One other extremely valuable lesson that is hammered home throughout the book is the value of becoming a recognized expert in your field. There is nothing like publishing book(s), articles, special reports, etc, that will establish your credibility as an expert. This can dramatically increase your value and thus income from other sources.

The book has way too much information to absorb in just one reading. If you are serious about becoming an informational marketer, read it a couple of times and then use it as a handy reference. A great resource for those just starting out or the seasoned infopreneur.

5 out of 5 stars Your launching pad to success!.......2007-09-12

I've been playing with information products as a new direction for my home business for a couple of years now. I've had three different e-books on the edge of completion ... stalled. I have two websites designed and ready to sell my info products ... with nothing to sell and no idea how to go any further. I happened across this book, bought it on impulse, and read it cover to cover in two nights. Eight days later I've sold over $1,200 in info products on one of my websites following the author's exceptional advice and instruction. The "Infopreneur Profiles" were fantastic. I checked out all of their sites/products and learned a lot. The "Directory of Resources" was phenomenal and well-used. Ms. Chandler's writing style is direct and instructional while being entertaining and even motivating at the same time. Not only did I get exactly what I needed to light my fire and guide me the rest of the way to ebook success - but this book opened my eyes to related concepts and new ideas I can't wait to follow up on. I'd love to meet the author - just to give her a hug! If you want to make money selling information products (online or otherwise) this book will be significant in helping you reach your goals. Ms. Chandler, I think your book is underpriced. I would have paid more and now that I've read it - I would have paid a lot more!

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-08-23

Good general information on breaking into the Info-Marketing arena.
Ms Chandler does a nice job of motivating and encouraging - especially if you've been sitting on the fence for a time, like I have.

For me, the best features were the list of various resources and the "real life" mini porfiles of Infopreneur's.

At the end of each chapter a short profile is included of people who are doing what I want to do - Inspirational!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - has helped my eBook sales tremendously!.......2007-07-12

As an author myself,(my book is Stay-At-Home Mom's Guide to Successful eBay ® Selling)I am always looking for ways to promote my eBooks, and printed books. This book offers valuable information about how to build a mailing list for email marketing, creative ways to use the internet to self-promote, and excellent examples of real people who have found success using Stephanie's techniques. If you are interested in writing or selling eBooks, this guide is a MUST to learn how to promote yourself, your work, and your digital materials. Excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Aaron tells you all the secrets he learned the hard way!.......2007-09-28

Planning to self-publish your book? Aaron teaches you how to bypass all the middle-men. Believe, I know - I published my first book through a publishing service (you'd know the name), and it was so easy. And it was FREE. BUT, by using them my book had to be priced too high to sell: $21.98 for a 228-page paperback novel. After reading Aiming at Amazon I learned how I could cut my retail price in half, yet still make a decent profit. I have just published the second edition of my first mystery novel, along with my second and third novels using the advice in this book. Check out one of them here:Hideaway Hospital Murders (Greg Tenorly Mystery Series, Book 2). I highly recommend Aiming at Amazon. Frankly, I'm surprised he's sharing the information instead of just keeping it to himself for his own use. So, if you're planning to self-publish your book, don't do anything else until you read this book!

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference guide.......2007-09-04

I have recently gone through the process of publishing a non-fiction book now listed on Amazon. Fortunately I came across this book just as I had completed my writing. Throughout the roughly six-month process of defining a market strategy and implementing it, Aiming at Amazon has been sitting next to my desk rather than on the bookshelf. Aaron Shepard is one of those rare "self-help" authors who provide common-sense, practical advice rather than just rah-rah bromides and useless pep talks. If you are self-publishing, start here.

5 out of 5 stars So good if you are a competitor I hope you don't read it!.......2007-09-01

I am an experienced publishing exec with numerous NYT bestsellers in my past, but Aaron Shepherd has changed the way I look at publishing. A truly great book.

Oh, and did you notice that to scroll down to the customer reviews you first had to get past the best Amazon page you have ever seen? And that's just one reason to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-08-23

Aaron Shepard's Aiming at Amazon book is a light read full of helpful tips on tailoring your publishing endeavors at one of the best sources of online book sales: Amazon.com. In this how-to, Shepard meticulously shows how to get your book put together and "optimized" for online shopping. Along with his friend, Morris Rosenthal's book on POD book publishing Print-on-Demand Book Publishing: A New Approach To Printing And Marketing Books For Publishers And Self-Publishing Authors, any new publisher can have their books online making money in under a month (approx.)Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of useful information - straight to the point. .......2007-10-05

I was a published author before I read Weber's books, but my market up until now was Europe and Latin America. Even though I subscribed to Writer's Digest and read a lot about marketing and networking ... as a writer mom I didn't have the time to be reading about how Amazon "really" can work for you or against you depending on how you use it, how to network online and the importance of an interactive website. While mine was (still is) very flashy, it did nothing for the reader and I decided to change that approach after reading this book. Someone told me the book contained all the information he had read over 4 years poring over mags and other books and the Internet, but for me it was great to find it all in one book. I'm sure it will have to be updated regularly, since the Internet is a fast paced ever changing place. But I got a lot out of the book and I believe any writer and author can too, no matter how big or small their publishers are.

5 out of 5 stars Attention Independent Writers.......2007-10-04

This is the only book you will ever need to succeed on the web with your stories that you have sweat over only to be turned down by "the big boys". This book has enhanced my sales tremendously and I have only owned it for 4 days. Steve's step by step is the only way to go. He gives you the how and the where. The action is up to you. Thank you Steve

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ALL AUTHORS!!!.......2007-09-26

I'm writing not only to recommend this book to new authors and those that have been around the block a few times, but also to personally thank you Steve Weber! I'm truly glad I stumbled upon you and your book on My Space:) Everyone that read my first book loved it. But few knew how to find it and I didn't really know how to market it. I can certainly say, having been ranked on Amazon with my second book that if you write, this book should be in your library! Wishing you continued success and thanks again so much for putting this information in a clear and easy to undertand language so we who love to write, can reach those who love read! I also want to mention that when you buy this book, some of the things you might not get completely the first go around, are shared again if you sign up for his news letter. So you're always if you do so, getting tips which is fantastic because Steve is really following up on what he preaches.

Wishing you continued success Steve and if you're a writer reading this... I hope you will take the hint and jump start your success possibilities by investing in this book. I heard earlier today that someone, (Think it was Ben Franklin), and not verbatim mind you, said if you want to fill up your pockets, then spend some of the money in your pockets investing in your mind.

For writers, this book is one, if not thee best way you can go about that.

Sincerely,
And thanks again for creating this book:)

The Last Panther Your Chance to Hear The Last Panther Speak

5 out of 5 stars Every author will want to read "Plug Your Book" again and again .......2007-09-07

To use a cliché, Plug Your Book! Online Book Marketing for Authors by Steve Weber is a page turner. As a book publicist always looking for new angles to promote my client's books, I could not wait to read the next page because there was so much good information about online book marketing on every single page. It's all presented in a useful format complete with the 'why' and 'how to.'

For instance, Weber discusses the awesome power of Amazon and its various nooks and crannies. He unveils various Amazon features that can help authors sell more books. He states that Amazon 'reader reviews' are more important than ever -- perhaps even rivaling a major newspaper review. The reason? Amazon reviews can be read for years by hundreds of people and a potential buyer is just one click away from purchasing your book. He says "Amazon is 'ground zero' for your online campaign. It provides free worldwide exposure to those readers most likely to buy your book."

Weber also suggests numerous online resources as well as how to create an online blog tour and using social networking sites such as My Space to promote your book.

Every author will want to read "Plug Your Book" again and again to learn how to successfully use all of the online tools available to "Plug Your Book."

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for the independent author/publisher.......2007-08-27

If you're an independent author and/or publisher, then "Plug Your Book" is a must-read/must-own reference guide you should carry everywhere you go and review before you start your business day on the World Wide Web.
There are so many facets to the publishing world that even with extensive study and research can be overwhelming and at times, too much to take in. Mr. Weber has compiled an extensive "to-do" list being simply his table-of-contents. Not only does he offer marketing tips and trade secrets, but there is invaluable information loaded within the pages--resources, examples and motivation to say the least!
I have to say, being new to the publishing world, I have already begun to see immediate return-on-investment with regards to the amount of time I spend researching, publicizing, marketing and networking with other writers and publishers on the Internet, by simply applying the various techniques and utilizing the "right" resources to get the job done!
Thanks Steve for this invaluable resource!

Book Description

How the marketing system that helped spark a bestselling customer revolution in the Christian marketplace can fuel the success of any business––by speaking to the integrity and passion of every customer.

Readers will discover a comprehensive strategy that can help any business reach and retain new markets, by tapping the secrets of what Zondervan marketing leader Greg Stielstra calls PyroMarketing. From the importance of focusing on individual consumers and their preferences, to giving customers an experience with the benefit of your product or service, to converting customers into enthusiastic sales people for your product, to building a state of the art consumer database, PyroMarketing captures in one four–step system the essence of the customer–driven strategies that seek to build markets through the passion and loyalty of the individual. Stielstra's manifesto is based on a powerful and easy–to–apply metaphor––of fire: "There are four steps to creating successful marketing campaigns. You build them the same way you build a campfire. If you were a scout or a camper, you already know the drill. " Gather the driest tinder. Touch it with the match. Fan the flames. Save the coals.

Tapping the latest scientific research into the brain and human behaviour, Stielstra demonstrates how traditional marketing techniques are expensive, obsolete, and doomed to failure––while PyroMarketing principles deliver powerful results over the long–term and for less money. Illustrated with case studies including The Purpose–Driven Life, one of the bestselling books of all time, and the breakaway phenomenon The Passion of Christ.

5 out of 5 stars You've Got My Attention.......2007-05-17

Written by the guy who helped Purpose Driven Life sell millions of copies--I would call him credible. And I was not disappointed by what I read. He gave me great tips and tools to help me reach my audience.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best marketing book...but VERY useful.......2007-04-18

First off....what's with all the complaints about the "fire" analogies given in this book. I personally think it puts you in a proper "frame of mind" as far as equating to real world marketing. This is what makes the book relevant as an example would be to find "the driest tinder" ....makes sense as what should be where your marketing dollars should be directed.

I own many marketing books and this definately stands among the better ones.

The only problem i have is the fact that if the author is an expert in marketing books (his occupation) Why has this book not "caught fire" in the marketplace?

Makes you think

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2007-03-07

Everything relavant to marketing can be learned in the left inside flap of the jacket, unless of course you are looking for a book on the science of building a fire. The author has no experience, he only uses 2 real world examples that he knows very little about, and nothing in this book is relavant to marketing. I want my money back.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Approach That Can Jump Start Your Thinking.......2007-02-26

When I picked up "PyroMarketing" I expected to find another forced metaphor presentation of basic marketing principles.

The book has a bit of that.. but I quickly found the power of Stielstra approach. The 4 steps are presented in contrast to more standard reviews and were easy to follow in a fresh approach to marketing thought.

It's familiar territory, but Stielstra's passion for modern branding and promotion done right, and the examples of the powerful campaigns he reviews have stuck in my mind and ignited a bonfire of ideas for my own projects.

If you want to see a product or new idea catch fire and grow exponentially, "PyroMarketing" is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this way of looking at Marketing.......2007-01-09

I picked up this book out of the blue and thought it could help me in a new marketing position I was starting. I was right. I learned so much while reading this book that I could hardly put it down. I am now using the principles in this book in my new position with success.

"Self-publishing," say authors Tom and Marilyn Ross, "is a perfect example of the American dream." The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing, then, is an aspiring self-publisher's dream. "This isn't a book of fancy theory," as the authors put it; "it's a practical handbook of state-of-the-art specifics." In 521 pages, it lays out everything you need to know to publish your own books, from start-up considerations to the possibility of selling to a big publisher: how to choose a name for your press, how to get an ISBN, what cover designs cost, how to find a reliable printer, how to price your book, where to find lighter-weight shipping envelopes, how to generate working capital. The authors' encyclopedic grasp of the ins and outs of self-publishing is matched by their natural good sense about self-promotion. Turn your signings into events, they recommend; get your books into a variety of venues; use the books as fundraisers for organizations; get online and get reviewed online. The price of this book is negligible considering the cost of proper self-publishing (between $12,000 and $25,000), and, oh, the headaches it will spare you! --Jane Steinberg

5 out of 5 stars A Publisher's Bible.......2007-09-26

This book is the perfect bible for publishers and authors alike. Helpful information can be gleaned from each and every chapter for those just getting starting in the publishing industry.

As a publisher, I refer to it often and each time I learn something new. To complete your collection, you should buy Jumpstart Your Book Sales and Shameless Marketing for Brazen Hussies.

Tom and Marilyn Ross have definitely filled an empty spot in this industry with this book!

4 out of 5 stars Good Pep Talk.......2007-08-12

I liked this book to most degrees. It has a somewhat dated feel to it, but it contains a decent amount of information that a brand new self-publisher or author needs to get the job done. My only qualm with this book is that it seems to be too much of a motivational speech--but that is a minor irritant that I'm sure some readers really enjoy. I like examples of what worked for someone--not what might work. Examples are the key, specific examples, and this book could have used more of them. I really prefer Morris Rosenthal's book about self-publishing--he gives a year in the life of a book (from beginning to finish in the publishing life). BUT, I think this book helped me, too, so I recommend it. 4 stars!

5 out of 5 stars This book guided me to publish my book........2007-05-20

From the time I began the process to self-publish my book, The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing was in near-reach to me. This book goes over the many details needed to publish a book and opened my eyes to the very important and various aspects of marketing for both before and after the book is printed. I first read the book front to back taking notes and marking which pages I knew I would need to return to for different stages in the process. From the book's Self-Publishing Timetable, I formed and kept my own very long `What to do' list, and over the months, it felt good to be able to check off the items. I have been recommending this book to people I know who are also considering the self-publishing direction. The encouragement from Tom and Marilyn Ross to do it and do it successfully guided me to getting my math book into print last year.

5 out of 5 stars Good Start.......2007-04-14

I would like to have seen more information on audio book publications and more leads on audio publishers.
I purchased several books on this topic. The information is helful but I find out that there is a lot more to learn the more I read. You may want to explore what other useful information you may find online.

2 out of 5 stars Contains a mixture of solid information and heavy hype.......2007-03-23

Although there is quite a bit of good information in this book, it is also heavily, heavily padded out with hype, hyperbole, and rah-rah-sis-boom-ba pollyanna-ism. If you buy the book, first turn to page 43 and read the section on subsidy publishers, but as you read it, mentally replace each instance of "subsidy publisher" with "self-publisher" and you will get a remarkably accurate summary of the daunting challenges facing anyone who tries to publish their own work themselves in any fashion.

The fact is that many of those same caveats apply to publishing through a trade publisher as well.

Which brings me to the gist of my objection to this book. It is simply not a realistic presentation of the likelihood of success. Whether you subsidy publish, self-publish, found your own small press or work through an established trade publisher, you will find that the odds are very heavily stacked against you. All the rah-rah-sis-boom-ba in the world will not change that fact.

So read the book, note all the useful things that do appear here and there, and then go read some more books until you find yourself armed with a genuine, realistic, and sober assessment of what you're getting into in a field where only the very best and the very luckiest ever make it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of information and ideas.......2007-10-05

For those of us who have never published this is an excellent place to start. I suggest reading it cover to cover, even if you already have a book ready for publishing, because it is so full of ideas for discovering your next publication and how to improve any you already have.

3 out of 5 stars A handy manual.......2007-05-14

The major virtue of this book is its compendium approach to the problem its title states. For those who know absolutely nothing about getting published, it is a helpful manual. The major flaw of the book is that its content boils down to a Catch-22---i.e., to be published you must have X. But X cannot be gained without Y and to do Y, you must have X.

I don't know whether the author's ideas have been repeated by the many who write on the same subject or whether the information in the book is so generalized that everyone in the industry knows it. In any case, the book brings together in one volume most of the things a writer trying to get published should know. And it does suggest the cause of the difficulty of getting published. That in itself is worth the price of the book.

However, the book is lightweight. One continues to wonder how to get published without having to do the kind of social commingling the author, and so many others, recommends.

The book was published in 2000. It has not to my knowledge been updated. So, some of the information is out of date. As the author notes: "editors move around a lot."

1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2006-07-20

Claims to give you an example of a complete synopsis suitable to send out to an editor and then gives you a blurb for the back of the book.
Suggest cold calling editors which would only make them hate you and think you are a...dummie
Gives publishers' general details of the sort you could look up in the phone book which would be no use to you whatever since you would need to know individual editors names, what they are interested in publishing etc... Most of the publishing houses listed require agents but there are pleanty of publishers who do consider unagented writers who are not listed in this book. I really wish I had bought a different book as this was a complete waste of money.
I am lucky I know enough about writing and publishing to know what a terrible inaccurate picture this book gives.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely for Dummies.......2006-04-08

For the total novice who has very limited experience in writing and publishing, this book will be treasure trove, especially if that novice is planning to write a non-fiction book. For everyone else, this book has lesser value. I found it offered very little for writers of fiction. The information offered was also rather basic; for a person with a moderate amount of writing experience, the book offered little in the way of insightful information. The "for Dummies" part of the title definitely applies in this case.

2 out of 5 stars Getting your book published for those who already have.......2004-03-26

This book was a disappointment. The reviews below pretty much reflect my problems with the book. Another problem I had concerned promotion. The authors assume that every aspiring author already has extensive media contacts. The sample proposal they give is from 2 college professors who have already published 2 books and have been featured on national TV and raidio. Now come on, most people who buy this book have not been on national TV and have no idea where to begin a promotional campaign. That's why they buy this book in the first place! Instead of telling us how to establish media contacts to use in the proposal, the authors simply tell us to use all our media contacts in the proposal. If I already had media contacts I wouldn't have needed the book.

In sum, if you havn't already published a few books and havn't been on national TV, this book will leave you with many lingering questions.
