Assistant Visiting Professor, Southern Illinois University.......2006-09-06
As part of a commmittee including active fire chiefs, we reviwed this book for use in the Southern Illnois University program for Fire Service Management. We found the breadth of subjects covered to be excellent. We also found that the "real world" type problems presented at the end of each chapter were excellent opportunities for class discussions and/or essay tests. The book was compared against a general local government HR text and found to be superior for a fire service setting.
Firefighter's Do Not read !!!.......2006-07-17
This book is not for firefighter's or fire officer's. This title is very misleading. A more appropriate title would be, Human Resource Managers Manual. This book was put on my departments Lt. and Capt. promotional test strictly by its deceiving title. I asked our Chief to read it and he agreed that it is horrible. I will never read another book or article by Steven T. Edwards.
Read like a cookbook........2001-01-17
I bought this book as a text book for a college course. I was extremely dissappointed because the style in which Mr. Edwards writes is an excellent example of what a text book should not be. I wondered if I had bought the clif note version. I felt this book was written like a cookbook. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and I wanted to throw the recipe away. I felt that Mr. Edwards book was an excellent example of "easy way out" management. He limited the examples in the text to only the those he used, and left an impression that all of his decisions were correct. I would like to ask Mr. Edwards if he felt he was successful in running the PG County Fire Dept. using the discussed methods. I would also ask if he felt the Dept. was in better shape after his tenure as Chief. If you are interested in learning to manage fire service personnel you may want to read this book, because of the limited information on the topic. But if you set it down after the first ten pages dont be suprised, I have seen toast that wasnt as dry as this book.
A fire service managers guidebook for success........2000-06-12
Fire Service Personnel Management is a timely an effective tool in dealing with personnel issues in the 21st century. Specific fire service scenarios throughtout the book highlight the challenges associated with a changing fire service. The book exposes the manager to the reality of a new workforce comprised of more and more minorities and females. It concisely explains the legal issues that a supervisor needs to be familiar with as well as guidelines for the selection of recruits and developing promotable employees. The chapter on labor relations and collective bargaining provides unique insights into collaborating with labor to achieve the goals of both Union and Management. Every manager will glean new techniques in effectively dealing with labor issues. My only regret is that this book was not available when I was studying for promotions as it is an extremely user friendly and comprehensive resource. I use it now in my capacity as Deputy Chief to doublecheck myself when handling any personnel matter.

Great...so far.......2007-09-27
I have had this book a few weeks now and have used it quite a bit. My certification exam isnt until January but I passed my school exam with flying colors. I think it really helped! I would recommend it. Actually my instructor recommended it to me.
Delmar Medical Assisting Exam Review.......2006-09-02
I used the Delmar Medical Assisting Exam Review. I would not recommend this book to anyone that doesn't have a lot of medical knowledge. Unless they have made a lot of corrections, there are many, many errors in this material. I was lucky enough to catch a lot of them (who knows how many I missed?). There were enough mistakes that if you went by what was published, you could possibly fail your certification exam. I did call them about the errors, but they really didn't seem interested in knowing exactly what the errors were. They just said if I returned the book, with my sales receipt, they would refund my money. Well I was out whatever I paid for the book because I no longer had my receipt. So if you do purchase this book, just keep in mind that some of the info may not be correct.
Book Description
Mental disability has come of age as a subject of concern under the European Convention on Human Rights. It was only in 1979 that the first significant decision of the ECHR was decided on the subject, and after that, cases were relatively few for many years. It is only recently that this has begun to change. This volume provides an account of where the law currently stands and speculation as to how it may develop. The initial chapters deal with substantive aspects of Convention rights (including issues of detention in institutions, conditions within institutions, medical treatment, problems associated with guardianship and others). The final two chapters move to discuss the practicalities of litigation. The book concludes with a number of appendices (primarily the primary international legal materials of relevance to mental disability rights under the ECHR, and the relevant recommendations and principles from the Council of Europe). It is hoped that this volume, in addition to shedding light on where the law currently stands, will offer practical guidance to lawyers concerning the mechanics of representing people with mental disabilities.

Book Description
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, organizations that fail to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with mental disabilities may be subject to penalties and punitive damages. The Act does not, however, provide useful guidelines to help organizations comply--a gap that Dr. Fielder's book now fills. This manual shows that compliance is not difficult or expensive. In clear, concise language, it acquaints management with mental diagnoses, impairments, disabilities, the myths of mental illness and its affect on job performance, and provides samples of workplace accommodations and compliance plans. Practical and readable, the book is intended for management of organizations with 15 or more employees, their human resource staffs and employee assistance professionals, and legal counsel.

Book Description
A penetrating analysis of the close relationship between public health and human rights, this book makes a compelling case for synergy between the two fields. Using the AIDS pandemic as a lens, the authors demonstrate that health is closely related to human dignity and individual rights--human rights cannot be deemed adequate and comprehensive without ensuring the health of individuals. In the course of their analysis, Gostin and Lazzarini tackle some of the most vexing issues of our time, including the universality of human rights and the counter-claims of cultural relativity. Taking a cue from environmental impact assessment, they propose a human rights impact assessment for examining health policies--a tool that will be invaluable for evaluating real-world public health problems. This volume examines issues--HIV testing, screening, partner notification, isolation, quarantine, and criminalization of persons with HIV/AIDS--within the framework of international human rights law. The authors evaluate the public health implications of a wide range of AIDS policies in developed as well as developing countries. The role of women in society receives special emphasis. Finally, the book presents three case histories significant in the HIV/AIDS pandemic and analyzes them from a human rights perspective. The cases include discrimination and the transmission of HIV and tuberculosis in an occupational health care setting; breast feeding in the least developed countries; and confidentiality and the right of sexual partners to know of potential exposure to HIV. Gostin and Lazzarini have written a book that will be a valuable addition to the libraries of public health practitioners, legal scholars, bioethicists, policy makers, and public rights activists.
Book Description
First, Do No Harm shows how health care professionals, with the best intentions of providing excellent, holistic health care, can nonetheless perpetuate violence against vulnerable patients. The essays investigate the need to rethink contemporary healthcare practices in ways that can bring the art and science of medicine back into sorely needed balance.
These ground-breaking studies by noted scholars question commonly held assumptions in contemporary healthcare that underlie oppressive power dynamics and even violence for patients and their families. The contributors discuss such topics as women and violence, life-support technologies, and healthcare professionals’ own experiences as patients. First, Do No Harm opens the discourse for reaching new understandings, from reassessing the meaning of "quality of life" to questioning the appropriateness of the very language used by healthcare professionals. It will be welcomed by healthcare workers and by scholars in nursing, medicine, and the allied health sciences.
Book Description
This timely resource provides emergency management and response professionals with a blueprint for preparing and planning for, mitigating effects of, responding to, and recovering from terrorism disasters. The reader learns how to analyze existing emergency service planning and operational system models and formulate a more effective plan for local, regional, state and federal response in the event of terrorist incidents. In light of efforts by government agencies such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), DOD, (Department of Defense), DOE (Department of Energy) and local agencies across the nation, this book is an essential guide to the planning and implementation of anti-terrorist response and operations for the overall safety of the first responder.
Customer Reviews:
Terrorists' Intelligence.......2000-09-09
I found the book very useful for my MSc course. It is well written except for one part that I disagree with, pp27-28, where terrorists were described as "not very intelligent" and operated without a "coherent plan of action."
Terrorists are as normal as you can get [see Hendrick, C. (ed)(1987) Group Processes and Intergrouop Relations: Social Psychology of Terrorist Groups, Sage, Newbury Park, pp234-235]: everything about them is average. The fact that they have been able to carry out so many missions and have been successful in killing so many people tells us something. While risk managers may fear them or choose not to fear them, the greater fear is if we underestimate their potential.
Absolutely essential book for emergency planners........1999-05-04
Dr. Buck covers the subject very thoroughly. Terrorism, just like any other hazard requires thoughtful planning when an incident occurs. Planning for disasters is not new and this guide provides the reader with a step-by-step method to prepare for such an event. Many existing plans for other hazards already give jurisdictions a substantial capability to meet the challenges of a terrorism incident. This book is a must for anyone who is tasked to prepare for a terrorist incident.

wonderful for chiropractic students/doctors.......2004-04-18
Dr. Hammer is a great writer. He doesn't ignore the subluxation complex as in some texts supposenly related to chiropractic. Dr. Hammer shows how soft tissue injury is related to the subluxation. When I took the national boards of chiropractic, I used this book as one of my references for Part II section--Chiropractic Practice, and also for Part III. Little advice for taking the boards, get Souza's book, Differential Diagnosis for the Chiropractor. Also, Patrick Leonardi's study guides, National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers, National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
These study guides have questions that were excellent because they were the kind encountered on the exams. Also souza's book was very helpful for chiropractic practice and Part III. Dr. Warren's book was also on the mark for Chiropractic Practice section of part II.
Functional Soft Tissue Examination and Treatment by Manual M.......2002-09-26
As an athletic trainer at a large high school in Pennsylvania, I found this book very helpful in every day treatment of various ailments my athletes complained of. Although the process can be complex, the soft tissue treatments are very helpful and this book I have found to be a very valuable asset.
INCREDIBLE BOOK!.......2000-01-08
Dr. Hammer has done a marvelous job in describing and picturing the soft tissue component of the subluxation complex. As a Chiropractor, this book has been invaluable to me AND the patients who have benefitted from the knowledge I have gained from Dr. Hammer. THANK YOU, DR. HAMMER!
A must book for anyone interested in manual medicine........1999-04-20
Hi, I'm the author, Dr. Warren I. Hammer, DC,MS. The real reason for entering this arena is to announce to Amazon that the 2nd. edition of this text is now available. The new text is twice the size of the first and filled with the latest information about examining soft tissue and treating by soft tissue methods.

Provides social workers and lay people with a basis or basic foundation as an introducation to the "process" of law. The book is well written --easy to read. It provides a snapshot to serveral important areas of health and human services. Only draw back is it is dated. Several key cases since written effect the profession and should be revised or updated.
