      Book Description

Education professionals have traditionally relied on a wait-to-fail formula to identify and assist students experiencing academic difficulties. With the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, however, a unique early-identification tool – known as response to intervention (RTI) – now offers professionals the option of implementing a collaborative, problem-solving tool designed to ensure that all students achieve academic success.
Until now, practitioners have had access to very few detailed descriptions of RTI methods and the effective role they can play in special education. The Handbook of Response to Intervention fills this critical information gap. In a single, comprehensive volume, more than 90 expert scholars and practitioners join together to provide a highly usable guide to the essentials of RTI assessment and identification as well as research-based interventions for improving students’ reading, writing, oral, and math skills. Each chapter explores crucial issues, defines key concepts, and answers real-world questions regarding implementation, including such major topics as:

The Handbook of Response to Intervention is a must-have volume for all education practitioners, researchers, and graduate students as well as anyone involved in curriculum reform or resource allocation.
      __________________________________________________________________
"This handbook provides essential reading for all stakeholders seeking to increase their knowledge base about RTI. It is an excellent and timely resource. I challenge everyone to read it, and then follow-up with actions to ensure that every child benefits from RTI."
      - Bill East, Ed.D., Executive Director, National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE)
"The Handbook of Response to Intervention: The Science and Practice of Assessment and Intervention is a comprehensive compilation of research articles and information on RTI. Noted researchers, university instructors, and practitioners have contributed to this handbook, addressing issues related to evidence-based instruction, systems consideration, and implementation. This handbook is an excellent resource for all educators."
      - Diane Morrison, Ed.D., Director of Support Services, Northern Suburban Special Education District
"The Handbook of Response to Intervention represents a comprehensive and balanced presentation of the array of professional knowledge essential to understanding this important concept. The scope of the coverage includes theoretical aspects, reviews of important related issues, balanced coverage of controversial aspects, and practical steps towards implementation. Educators, advocates, school psychologists, and anyone interested in this critical innovation for American schools should carefully read this important professional reference."

5 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" for any parent or guardian raising a child with learning Disabilities .......2006-09-14

IDEA 2004: A Parent Handbook For School Age Children With Learning Disabilities by school psychologist and parent advocate Shelly Smith is a straightforward guide for parents and professionals to the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Improvement Act. Condensing everything parents need to know to be effective advocates in plain terms, IDEA 2004 covers practical applications of the law, disability laws in general as they pertain to schoolchildren, and the rights of both children and parents. Reducing seemingly incomprehensible bureaucracy into simple terms, and fully explicating both the letter and the spirit of the law, IDEA 2004 is an absolute "must-have" for any parent or guardian raising a child with learning Disabilities and seeking a positive, balance-of-power relationship with the public school system.

        5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up!.......2006-04-24

As a current Director of Special Education, I find Shelly Smith's book for parents to be the best information possible for the lay person. It explains to the parents their rights regarding their child's education in such a manner that is easily understood but comprehensive. Any parent of a special needs child must read Shelly's book. The complicated law that protects these students and their parents is so massive that such a common sensible approach is needed. Ms. Smith brings the language, terminology, and rights down to a level that the reader can comprehend. This book has a five star rating as far as I am concerned and should be distributed to all parents of challenged children.

        Dr. Lynn Ahrens

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-04-14

The consistency of MS Smith's advice is wonderful. There is no need to remember situational models or hope that your particular situation is referred to in her book. If you don't feel "the system" is working properly to serve your child, you simply state that you don't feel they are fulfilling their legal obligation. It is a simple statement, it isn't
confrontational and best of all, it is our natural reaction as parents of a special needs child! Brilliant!!!!

I am a Special Education Teacher. I know how difficult these laws are to understand. Administrators, teachers and families are still trying to determine what changes have been made what they mean and what is new. For those of us who don't have time to read all 200 pages of the law this book makes it easy to understand. With the help of this book it will be much clearer how, when and why the IDEIA can help you and your student(s).

5 out of 5 stars YOU NEED THIS!.......2006-04-14

Shelley Smith's book Idea 2004: Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act: a Parent Handbook for School Age Children With Learning Disabilities is a MUST READ for any parents with a Special Needs child. This book takes all the legal terminology that is supposed to be protecting our children and breaks it down into plain language that can be utilized by any parent in advocating for their child. This is a book that you want to keep by your side throughout your child's education! I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get a better handle on their rights and providing their child with the most APPROPRIATE EDUCATION!

            Book Description

A careful examination of the evolutions of Curriculum as Political Text and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1973 disclosed certain contributory facets to teacher disillusionment in an inclusive high school environment. A diminishing sense of professional self-efficacy, self-empowerment, and optimism stemmed primarily from the political machinations of a hidden curriculum and a misapplication of an inclusive classroom practice.

The process used to arrive at these conclusions was heuristic research, wherein outward perceptions and realties assumed meaning vis-a-vis inward reflection and introspection, disclosing an unequivocal new awareness, illumination, and enlightenment. Such personal enrichment, however, arrived only after a journey-of-self unfolded through the three phases of heuristic research--Immersion, Acquisition, and Realization.

First and foremost, this was a human study that examined specific elements contributing to teacher disillusionment. During Immersion, disquieting professional life experiences formed the preliminary data through which and from which was extrapolated an essence or meaning that ultimately assumed form through autobiographical narrative.

The second phase, Acquisition, included input from a variety of sources, ranging from texts, literature, and discourses to federal legislation and law review to human subjects'studies. What was "acquired," then scrutinized, was new knowledge relative to disillusionment in the inclusive classroom, especially with regard to curriculum as political text.

Finally, the Realization Phase aggregated and synthesized the components disclosed in Immersion and Acquisition, which led to a dynamic "coming together" of seemingly disparate elements, ultimately affirming a sense of professionalism and validating search-of-self.

              5 out of 5 stars Adjunct Professor--great material.......2007-02-04

I am an adjunct professor in an educational leadership program. I teach the "Administration of Pupil Services" course. I found this book to be great for its coverage of the major legislation for the handicapped. Would love some ideas for other materials related to the pupil services piece, i.e. roles of various personnel in school systems who have reponsibility for pupil services, the range of services and supports available to administrators related to all aspects of pupil services from attendance/truancy, to suspensions/expulsions, and the court system, etc.

5 out of 5 stars New and Fast.......2006-07-15

It's a great book for any of those who work in the field of education. The book arrived new (great condition) and very fast

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for Special Education Law.......2004-04-01

Like most potential buyers of this book, it's probably a required textbook you are needing to buy for a graduate level course. Let that not daunt you, it's one of the finest textbooks I've had...and I've had a few.

If your job requires you to work with children with disabilities, oversee programs that work with children with disabilities, or if you are a parent with a child with a disability I would highly recommend this book. It's the single best overview of the big three laws concerning disabilities, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), American with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. If you are an administrator you can use the text to inform you and guide you in your work. If you are a parent you can use the text to let you know what your rights are to securing Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for a child with a disability.

You can tell by the set-up and structure of the book that Dixie Snow Huefner took painstaking care to make the book student-friendly. There are ample margins for good note-taking right in the book. Each chapter has a wonderful review summation of the key points (perfect for working professional graduate students that may not have time to digest the Full Monty reading of the entire chapter). Also, there is a great acronym glossary that helps you make sense of the alphabet soup abbreviations of the world of special education law.

I really can not say enough good things about this book whether you pick it up as a textbook or to be better informed.
