    Book Description

ATTACKING FAULTY REASONING is the most comprehensive, readable, and theoretically sound book on the common fallacies. It is designed to help one construct and evaluate arguments. The overriding purpose of the text is to help the students recognize when they construct or encounter a good or successful argument of a particular action or belief. This one skill is reinforced on every page of the text, from the first three chapters that focus on the criteria for a good argument, through the four major chapters on the fallacies or ways that arguments can go wrong. The emphasis is on resolving issues rather than pointing out flaws in arguments.

4 out of 5 stars Good for GRE Preparation.......2007-09-20

I bought this book to prepare for the written part of the GRE. I did not take any philosophy or reasoning classes. I found it very useful, short and easy to read. I was able to get a lot of practical information to utilize in writing my essays without having to read the whole thing. Well worth the money.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the content and find myself utilizing the "critical thinking" ideas and tactics in my daily life.

And, yes, I'm pleased with my writing score!

2 out of 5 stars Coverage Does Not Match Its Introduction.......2007-07-10

The Introduction says see the sample answers and explanations at the end of the text. They don't exist. The Introduction cites definitions for specific fallacies like Tu Quoque, Fallacy of Popular Wisdom, and Inference from a Name or Description that do not exist in the text.
The Fourth Chapter ends with a table of 60 fallacies, however 35 of the fallacies are not defined or further discussed in the text.
The fallacies and definitions that do get covered are covered pretty well.
All this for $35! What a rip off!

5 out of 5 stars The ideal guide for making and breaking arguments.......2005-09-11

So many significant decisions are made in the workplace based on majority opinion or by the highest ranking person in the room.

This book will give the reader the knowledge and insight to put forth good arguments as well as point out how to identify flaws in others.

Of particular interest is the author's focus on the quest for the truth, or as he puts it the most defensible position. While the techniques laid out in this book can be used to 'win' arguments, the focus in primarily on helping find the truth.

Highly recommended for anyone in business.

3 out of 5 stars Even the best of us sometimes disappoint, ironically, and otherwise.......2005-09-05

As you can read from the excellent reviews of the fourth Edition of Attacking Faulty Reasoning (which anyone contemplating buying this volume should), Damer's "positive theory of argument" represents a huge breakthrough in informal logic. To my knowledge, Damer was the first to put foward a coherent schema of the fallacies of informal, organizing them as violations of four comprehensive rubrics, which stand as criteria for effective argument: 1) relevance 2) acceptability 3) sufficiency 4) resiliency (actually a change which Damer might have contemplated making in this new edition) - he uses 'rebuttal' - which, I suppose would have to be 'rebuttal-ness' - to stay in adjectival mode (appropriate to the idea of finding suitable and exhaustive 'criteria' for argument). Still, the term 'resiliency' more adequately than 'rebuttal' describes the criterion he is delineating in his theory.
That point aside, in the brilliant fourth edition - not enough can be said in its favor - Damer's theory reached the peak of its maturity. Five Stars Plus. I have taught this theory to hundreds of students in my critical thinking classes over the past five years, so I walk my talk here. Damer's organization of criteria provides the simplest and most user-friendly tool for evaluating the strength of an argument's process of justification which I have found. What better reason to buy a book on critical thinking?
Other than the glitch I point to above with the naming of the rebuttal criterion, Damer's theory was technically as nearly perfect (well, {a deep Wittgensteinian 'well' there} as could be expected for an exposition of the anatomy of contexts in informal argument) - simple, accessible, pragmatic (Falliblism and a Davidson-like Principle of Charity are crafted into the "12 Commandments" of rational discussion): a real advance in a line of thought which has emerged with increasing intensity as central to human progress since its early articulations with the work of Toulmin and others of his ilk.
And Damer, as the many who have read him know, writes very clear, concise instructions - the book is really a manual, and reads much in the style of the directions ubiquitously packaged into the many techno-artifacts and tools of our civilization. Good. No one, however, would actually dream of reading Damer for his diction - of poetic gifts his displays not a hint, nor a glint. A remedy to that problem might have been sought - if radical change seemed to be beckoning with the prospect of a new edition.
Instead, in this fifth edition, Damer has opted to hybridize what was formerly purely a theory of informal argument with a section drawn straight out of Aristotle's Posterior Analytics - his formal fallacies - introduced under the rather spurious, and disputable, criterion "structure". I could lament at length here. But, there are many who have varying views on the new inclusion. Out of respect - he never explains his reasons for this major alteration, I refrain from further critique. Rather, I leave my reservations those those purists who seek to go further with the development of the science of informal logic as a caveat re: the new Damer theory (don't buy it!), as opposed to those who seek once again to expand the domain of formal analyses, with the usual dubious results.
One hopes that a reassessment is forthcoming. Unfortuately, I doubt it. For the currently definitive statement of the informal fallacies - my opinion is to stick with the fourth edition, and supplement your reading with Toulmin, Fischer, and Zarefsky.
Also, as weird as the cover of the fourth edition was, this photo of the umbrella with what appears to be a half-filled glass of water from some restaurant has got be the lamest cover design for a textbook yet - and that indication should serve as caveat enough! Believe me, within, the glass is half-empty.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluble for everyday life, not just the classroom..........2004-10-31

Although I gathered that this book was written primarily as a text for logic and critical thinking courses, it helped me immensely in terms of learning how to make sense of argumentative quality in everyday life, not only the classroom. I did not read this book for a class as I have graduated college, but I found it to be a real help in determining the strengths and weaknesses in arguments and other forms of persuasive speech that we encounter daily.
The book uses clear and familiar everyday examples to make the points, instead of presenting things in an abstract and think-tank way, and most people will find themselves realizing that they have had arguments or debates exactly like those described in the book. The book clearly demonstrates how much reason and critical thinking can be diminished or overlooked by laziness or unwillingness on the part of people to care enough to think well.
The chapters follow a clear course and almost every logical fallacy I have ever encountered in the classroom or the real world is covered in the book. It explains the fallacy, gives examples, and shows how to expose the fallacy for being a poor argument, as well as demonstrating ways to combat and point out to the other person (in a nice way) the flaw in the reasoning. The tone of the book is pleasently informal, as it attempts to create familiar dialouge and situations to which the reader can easily identify. I highly reccommend the book and think that anyone who cares enough to want to think more maturely would benefit greatly.

1 out of 5 stars Overview but no best practice details.......2004-01-18

What a ripoff! I bought this book to get a great look at best practices for managing strategic alliances. But on page 75 in chapter 5, here's what I got: "The complete set of one hundred best practices and the associated skill levels is a proprietary tool that Booz-Allen uses with its clients, but let us consider here a few examples..."

Yet another overview book that talks about the subject without giving you the meat.

5 out of 5 stars The best book about Strategic Alliances available!.......2003-07-18

I am familiar with Dr. Pekar's work on strategic alliances for the past decade, and am very impressed with his business acumen and knowledge about this topic. I believe that he is the top expert in the world in this field.

"Smart Alliances" is hands-down the best book on the topic of strategic alliances published today. Unlike the other books on strategic alliances, Pekar and Harbison rely on data to back-up all of their findings. They are the only people in this discipline that have conducted the kind of extensive research and analysis that can support their conclusions. The alligorical stories are used to provide the reader with true, specific examples of particular issues associated with strategic alliances, rather than general fluff and filler as in most of the other books.

This book serves more as a primer for determining where your organization stands with regard to understanding strategic alliances, institutionalizing the strategic processes behind forming and maintaining alliances, and giving some insight to what many of the most prominent problems organizations struggle with when forming alliances. "Smart Alliances" is about identifying the gap between your company and some of the more important best practices that other successful alliance companies employ.

This is not a "how-to" book. It does not step the reader through forming, building, or maintaining alliances. It would be irresponsible to say that this book intends to walk the average reader through a process on creating strategic alliances. Being disappointed because you expected that, would be like saying that a book on how to write a business plan was poorly written because it wasn't specific to a certain company's needs. The reality is that strategic alliances are, in many cases, more difficult to form and maintain than a typical business and each have their particular issues and quirks that must be resolved. Without the proper knowledge and guidance, disaster is lurking around the corner.

Does this book encourage hiring consultants to assist with building strategic alliances? I don't think that's its purpose. However, the book does make clear that knowledge and planning are the most critical elements of building strategic alliances, and does include enough information for the introspective executive to determine where her organization stands. If you haven't played this game before and been successful on your own, why wouldn't you approach an expert?

If you're interested in learning more about strategic alliances, would like to view strategic alliances in a different light, or learn to think about business differently, than this is the book for you. If you want something that is going to teach you, or hand-hold you through the strategic alliance process, look elsewhere, and be wary!

5 out of 5 stars A solid and practical guide to alliances........2001-03-10

We just had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Pekar at Business Week's annual CFO conference in Palm Beach. We are a global company that forms alliances at a breathing pace - 18 alliances over the last quarter. We see alliances as an engine to grow. What impressed us with Dr. Pekar's presentation was his knowledge and experience in this area and his comprehensive research and analytical work that supports his position. We immediately bought copies of "Smart Alliances" and found the book to be right on target with our experience. We highly recommend it, especially to new comers to this area. I will say that Dr. Pekar has moved his research into new areas of deal making and governance. We hope that he will write a new volume on these critical items. We intend to utilize his services in our efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on The Subject.......2000-08-07

I have been following Harbison's and Pekar's work for over a decade. I have also attended their annual alliance conference in NYC sponsored by the conference board. For those not familiar with their work, they have completed 10 alliance studies covering the top 1,000 global companies as well as a recent study sponsored by the Association of Corporate Growth of the top small & medium size firms in the U.S. and Europe. Their work is the cutting edge. We have passed out copies to our executive core. I highly recommend this book which discusses just the tip of their work and is based on a number of their studies. To become more familiar with their thinking, I would suggest the reader also go to the web site "smartalliances.com" to read some of their latest Viewpoints on the subject. Simply, they are the leaders in this area. Being an executive in a major high tech firm that does mutiple alliances, I can state that no other consulting firm or academic institution has amassed such a wealth of information or experience on this important subject.

    2 out of 5 stars Intro Text.......2000-08-01

I gave this book 2 stars rather than 1, as it is a decent introductory text (with its share of fluff) with a couple of good charts (though a preponderance of "filler" charts). However, the book is a thinly disguised publicity push of Booz Allen (and a few others). And the book is impractical since it is virtually devoid of tools--rather useless for the professional. Caveat emptor.

4 out of 5 stars Practical, cuts the sophisticated academics........2006-05-22

This is a very practical book, I teach the course on intercultural negotiations, and believe me this book covers most of the important material in this matter. It cuts the long and boring academic parts that students at the MBA don't like, and goes directly to "hands on the action", the practical and usefull issues.

Not the dream book for this topic, but the best that is avaliable.

5 out of 5 stars Took me by surprise!.......2003-11-13

I was recently given a copy of this book for my birthday. At first glance I thought oh, great, another book I'll never look at, but then started leafing through it. It's packed with information on things my husband and I have been recently shopping around for, like a digital camcorder and a new lawnmower. There are loads of tips on how to make the most of your money and things to watch out for. But there's also stuff I never thought of: Hire a body guard, buy bonds, sell your body to science, buy a hourse trailer, sell a used bike?-and it's funny! My husband paws through it before he goes to Home Depot to get a good read on just about everything he needs. There'll be a lot of people getting this book for Christmas.

Got this to help as a union negotiator. Not a good book, bottom line to negotiations is do both sides want to meet in the middle. This book does not describe that. This book assumes parties want to agree and that is not always the case.

4 out of 5 stars negotiation resource book.......2002-09-09

wriiten simply so that anyone could follow it advice, this book is a good read

        4 out of 5 stars It Helped!.......2000-04-28

I picked up this book because I was about to negotiate a venture funding deal for a company. Boy was this book helpful! From how to best prepare for the negotiation to how to gain respect from your opponent to how to actually handle the negotiation, the author explains the subject with enthusiasm and humor. Lots and lots of examples make the subject matter easy to understand.

That the author emphasizes that negotiation is not just for "big deals" but for everyday living makes this book more valuable. I have re-read this book three times and continue to learn tremendously. I esp. enjoy the chapter on "insider" techniques. These pro secrets sound so simple yet how many of us really follow them? Again, the everyday examples enable the reader to immediately apply these techniques to all kinds of negotiations, big or small.

My only complaint is that there are quite a large number of grammatical and word usage errors.

4 out of 5 stars A very readable, enjoyable book - well worth its price........1997-10-22

It's too bad they put "Idiot's Guide" in the title - this book has very useful instructions for both new negotiators and veterans alike. The cover has a handy checklist of things to consider when preparing your negotiating strategy, and Ilich reinforces the importance of considering your opponent's objectives as well as your own. He introduces the term "equalization" and makes a good case for it (you'll have to read the book - I'm not going to give his idea away here). I would rate this book 4th on my list of negotiating reading, behind Getting Past No, Getting to Yes, and Getting Together. I've read about 15 books on the subject, so 4th is high praise.

Diana Rowland has written the classic guide to Japanese business etiquette and to the impact of Japanese culture on business and social interaction. Extremely thorough and fascinating, this guide covers all the traditions you need to understand to do business with the Japanese, in Japan or around the world. A good read even if you are just culturally curious, the book includes Japanese office layouts, diagrams showing where business guests should sit around the dinner table, and information on interpreting gestures at business meetings. Rowland covers the business and social roles of women and the difference between the real truth and the public truth. The book's final 50 pages provide a wide range of helpful, general resources, including important phone numbers and a glossary. We from getAbstract recommend this book to anyone doing business with the Japanese, anyone who plans to visit Japan for business or pleasure, and anyone who's just curious.
