Book Description
Make training more REAL than ever before! You've got groups, facilitated by managers or team members, conducting project planning and problem solving. You've got relatively few formal trainers and instructors. In this modern, team-based environment, how can you ensure that groups develop the skills and knowledge they require?

The responsibility for learning falls upon the shoulders of the learners, who feel more invested--and interested--in the development process than ever before.
"Two reasons to buy this book, read it from cover to cover, and apply the concepts immediately: (1) Rothwell is one of the best authors in the performance-improvement business; and (2) action learning is one of the most powerful performance-improvement strategies."--Sivasailam "Thiagi" Thiagarajan, president, Workshops by Thiagi; editor, Thiagi GameLetter
"The Action Learning Guidebook is clearly written and the content is excellent. The chapter on partnering with clients to determine real training needs is a gem!"--Dale M. Brethower, professor of psychology, Western Michigan University; president, International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI)

* examines the team facilitator's role.
* focuses on the application of Action Learning as a means for identifying and solving problems or addressing other organizational issues.

Very Good Resource for those who work with Performance.......2000-03-07
The last five chapters of the book detail her techniques and share some of her tools for determining the source(s) of performance problems, identifying interventions that will improve performance, and instruments to help measure the results of the improvement. Her book sits on my shelf within easy reach, and gets used often.
Required reading for new Performance Consultants.......1998-11-25
Judith has developed numerous tools and techniques to aid her in her own consulting work, and she presents many of them in this book in the context of her full and accurate perspective of effective human performance consulting in action. Even professionals that have been working in this field for years will find tools and techniques that can enhance their work.
I have put this book to the test as a "tool for learning" and I works beautifully. As a 20-year veteran consultant in this field, with much of my current work focused on developing new candidates to do this important work, I have used Judith's book as required pre-reading and as a tool for facilitating workshop activities. It has become required reading for all serious learners, and a regular part of our development programs. I heartily give The Performance Consultant's Fieldbook "two thumbs up."

More than just another training book.......2000-02-04
Performance-based instruction (or PBI for short) enables trainers to provide effective and efficient training that is linked to the learners' real job. Instead of working on generic exercises, trainees create tools and job aids that they can immediately use on their job. Instructional designers, trainers, and human performance consultants can apply PBI to on-the-job training, teamwork, feedback, job aids, personal development plans, and any other instructional context, including the conversion of traditional training to performance-based instruction. Evaluation is built into the design, it does not happen as an afterthought. This is important because continuous evaluation is needed for training professionals to stay on track throughout the design and implementation of complex or large training projects.
Performance-based instruction typically occurs in short sessions over a period of time so that trainees can practice the new material on their job. When distributed practice is not possible, PBI principles help to develop short training sessions that connect the training event to on-the-job performance in meaningful and immediately applicable ways.
This book contains exercises that help novices and experienced trainers to apply performance-based instruction from the get-go. A diskette with files of the highly useful tables and checklists allows readers to get a quick start. Overall, the book is an important resource for those performance professionals who want to improve performance where it really matters-on the job and not just the classroom.
