Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.

So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.

Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

5 out of 5 stars Prescription for Nutritional Healing 06.......2007-10-04

I am not a devout herbalist, but I don't like to take a lot of medications either. If I can heal myself or prevent problems with diet, exercise, therapies, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements, then I would prefer to!

I wanted one natural healing book. Just one- for reference. So I read through a TON of books at 2 different bookstores and at Whole Foods. I choose this one because it covered SO much.

It has sections on almost 300 ailments (for example: anxiety, hair loss, hypoglycemia, arthritis, stress, migraine, depression, indigestion, flu and bee-sting) and it lists the vitamins, minerals, and herbs good to use for each problem. Compared to my internet research, it recommends many of the same things and more. I love that it also gives advice on what not to take, what not to mix, how much, and what problems can arise (no other book seemed to do this as well). In addition, there is info on diet, exercise, and alternative therapies. In the front of the book, she explains herbs, minerals, the different types of enzymes, and more. I also enjoy the essential oils list in the back.

It is a little confusing when she lists some supplements by Brand Name (I don't like that). And the herbs are more of a post script to each list, but if you want more on herbs she does have a separate book just for that ("Prescription for Herbal Healing").

I am happy with just this one book- plus the advice of the wonderful folks at Erewhon and Whole Foods (who, as it turns out, reference this same book!).

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Tool.......2007-09-28

What I love about this book is how thorough it is. Not only does it cover a lot of ailments, but when it lists helpful supplements, it explains exactly how they work, recommended dosage, and the importance of it. It also give suggestions for lifestyle changes (for example, foods to avoid, the importance of exercise, etc.) Amazing. It's organized well, you can look things up by ailment OR supplement.

5 out of 5 stars My go-to reference for family health..........2007-09-22

I have a bachelors degree in holistic health, and was introduced to this book years ago when I first began studying alternative medicine. I have used this reference time and time again in treating myself and my family for common ailments. It never fails to yield useful information, always directing the reader to conventional medicine for more serious illnesses. An extremely useful tool for family healthcare.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2007-09-18

This is a great big book with a wealth of information about a great number (a few hundreds) of ailments, what causing them, and how to deal with them the natural way. With close to one thousand pages this is a complete resource of medical problems from A to Z. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written. It is also very simple to use, all ailments being ordered in alphabetical order. It is an excellent reference book, a health bible that should be readily available in each household. If you have a health problem I suggest checking what this book will tell you about it, before going to your doctor.

Another book that I also highly recommend is Cure the Incurable

Book Description

This book covers the regulatory process for getting pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices approved. It examines the pertinent aspects of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as it applies to human drug and device development, research, manufacturing, and marketing. Topics include: the drug approval process, Current Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Clinical Practices, Quality System Compliance and the corresponding documentation requirements, and FDA inspection processes and enforcement options. Although many references exist on this subject, this one is written in a general prose style that makes it useful to both students and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Best Available Book for Regulatory Affiars.......2006-11-23

Best Available Book for Regulatory Affiars, November 22, 2006
Reviewer: H. Burgoyne (Watertown, MA United States) - See all my reviews

I am currently completing a Masters in Regulatory Affairs and throughout all of my classes, this has been the best source (other than the FDA website, which is most current) pertaining to US reg. affairs. Forget any Parexel books...this one actually has an index, making it easy to find the information you need. Not sure about medical devices, as I do not specialize in them, but for pharmaceuticals and biologics this book is pretty comprehensive. You are not going to get a more "layman's level" interpretation of regulations than this book. Regulations are part of the law, which is never easy to "translate". It is hard to incorporate regulations into a book , as they are constantly being updated, but this book does a pretty good job. I have used the book to develop presentations, study for exams and write papers. If you are interested in US Regulatory Affairs, this book is definitely worth the investment. The price seems high, but is comparable to other books with the same subject matter.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't adequately cover medical device regulation.......2006-08-31

Mostly this book covers (perhaps adequately) FDA regulation of the development and approval process of new drugs. These new drugs are (by and large) developed by huge drug companies who doubtless employ teams of lawyers in connection with their FDA submissions and regulatory compliance, and it is quite likely that nearly all involved in that process with such companies would find this to be a "lite" description of FDA drug regulations, and will have little use for this book. (Imagine a beer having only 10 calories, not the 90 or so found in Miller Lite.)

Many medical devices, on the other hand, are developed by small companies (such as my employer) and a "layman's level" description (as opposed to a legal treatise) of FDA medical device regulation would be very useful. Since "medical device" is in the title, I figured when buying this book that there would be coverage relating to all FDA regulations pertaining to medical devices. Its why I (or thankfully, my company) bought the book.

Ther coverage of medical devices is grossly inadequate. Only a small portion of the book treats (again "litely") FDA medical device regulation, and then it largely covers only the premarket approval process for medical devices and barely mentions (or doesn't even mention--I forget) FDA regulation of the manner in which medical devices may be distributed in the US.

Given the relatively high cost of this book, I expected more and was quite disappointed.

As a third year pharmacy student, I am particularly impressed with the organization and conciseness of this guidebook to non-prescription products. This text is simple to follow, for health care professionals and also the average consumer who has questions and concerns about medications that they are buying over-the-counter.

For the Patient who wants to know about prescription drugs efficacy, side effects and cautions "The Pill Book" is a modestly priced and handy reference which puts the Patient on the same level with a Physicians drug reference manual, when it comes to uderstanding the consumption of precribed medications. If we want to know about what food we put into our mouths, why not know what pills we consume ?

    4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-05-12

5 out of 5 stars Great for medical personnel.......2007-02-21

I work in a general Ophthalmology practice and use this guide almost daily. It gives enough information without being overwhelming. It also has a condition index so when a patient says their blood pressure med starts with a "L" it is easy to find. I just bought the 7th edition, and still have the 6th at the office also.

    2 out of 5 stars Pocket guide - HA!.......2007-01-09

The info is valuable but this is advertized as a "pocket guide" - not in my pocket! I'm a CRNA and wanted a small reference convenient to pick up and look up medications while in the hospital. I leave this book home - I use it there.

I've been purchasing this book (which is updated biannually) since 2000 and have always found it to be clear and concise and written in language that can be understood by anyone. It lays out clearly any adverse reactions one may experience while taking any particular drug and how one should handle those reactions (discontinue; call doctor immediately; call doctor when convenient, etc). It also lists any additional drugs that may react adversely with the drug in question. As a reference, I would recommend this book to anyone.

I have the companion book: 5th edition Complete Guide to Systems, Illness & Surgery written by H. Winter Griffith. The book is very easy to read and understand. I reply on this book as it has shown to be an excellent source of information and it is very easy to use. I like the format, and the cross referencing, etc. Mostly I like the language that Mr. Griffith uses in his books. His books are easy to understand and finding the information you need is not complicated like so many of the other books are. His style is very user friendly while still being very up to date.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for everyone who takes prescription medication.......2006-08-04

In this modern era when pharmaceutical drugs are the main way that physicians treat illnesses and the average person routinely takes one or more prescription medications, it is essential that everyone learn the most important facts about their medications -- including possible interactions with other medications they may be taking. Yes, many medications come with some sort of printed insert full of fine print, but can you read and understand these inserts easily and with understanding? In many cases I can't, and I'm a research chemist with many years of training and 44 years of experience. That's why I turn to this excellent book by Dr. Rybacki when I want information about pharmaceutical drugs. It is well-written and easy-to-read and to understand. Furthermore, it almost invariably contains all the important information I am looking for, often including information I might not have thought that I needed. I can't recommend this important book too highly. I think everyone should have a copy -- including doctors. I'd like to add that even people who currently do not take any medications themselves may need this book if they care for children or relatives who do.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to use and understand, but needs to cover newer drugs........2006-03-19

This book is very easy to use and is written in language that is easy to understand. I was disappointed that James Rybacki did not cover some of the newer drugs that are out and which have been used for several years. Many of these newer medications are being used more than some of the older medications which he did include in the book. I think that it needs further updating every year.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute Best script book for laymen ever printed.......2006-03-18

The easiest, most understandable up to date book for laymen on the market, especialy when considering possible side effects of a med (as important as the targeted condition the med is taken for). It doesn't cover ALL drugs but the ones it does is in a comprehensive easy to use format.

I've been buying this book every year it's been in print (since 1987, except one or two years when it was wasn't reprinted). Some years it may not even get used but for 20 bucks when it's needed it's there.

Having tried, or thoroughly looked at, just about every med book on the market (including the Physcian's Desk Reference), I can, without reservation, say this one is the best for laymen. No one who takes any kind of medication should be without it.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Guide.......2006-02-24

Excellent resource book. Has more information than any web site for drugs. Easy to understand and very thorough.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth having on hand for basic info.......2006-02-22

This is one of the most accessable books for reading and understanding the basic and most common prescription drugs as well as their side effects and interactions with other medications and herbal remedies.

The info is timely, up to date and well-written. You'll only find more info in something like the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) but the PDR is far too dense for the average person and is written with such complex medical terminology that you practically need a translator to understand. The Essential Guide is a good alternative, containing the most important facts. With it, you're likely to stay safe, informed and healthy.

In this age of soaring medical costs, I especially like the tips for saving money on medical care and prescriptions. There are also special sections for those in their 50s and 60s as well as a section for pregnant women. In short, this one covers all the bases.

One caveat: Don't assume that this book (or any) has the newest, most up to date info. Be pro-active and look for any changes in info, whether it be in your daily newspaper, on tv news shows or on internet sites. New research comes out every day (such as the new Black box warnings being put on many ADD meds) and NO book can possibly contain the absolute newest info. But as a basic reference guide, this one is just fine.

    Book Description

Take Control of Your Cholesterol— Without Drugs

If you are one of the nearly 100 million Americans struggling with high cholesterol, then Dr. Janet Brill offers you a revolutionary new plan for taking control of your health—without the risks of statin drugs. With Dr. Brill’s breakthrough Cholesterol Down Plan, you simply add nine “miracle foods” to your regular diet and thirty minutes of walking to your daily routine. That’s all. This straightforward and easy-to-follow program can lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by as much as 47 percent in just four weeks.

Cholesterol Down explains Dr. Brill’s ten-point plan as well as the science behind it. You’ll learn how each miracle food affects LDL cholesterol and how the foods work together for maximum effect, as well as:

    • How eating whole grains helps reduce LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream
    • Why antioxidants keep plaque from building up in your arteries
    • How certain steps change the structure of LDL cholesterol particles (and why it’s best for them to be large and fluffy)
    • Why walking just thirty minutes a day lowers “bad” cholesterol and cuts dangerous belly fat

With everything you need to stay focused on the plan, including a daily checklist, a six-month chart for racking LDL cholesterol changes, tools for assessing your risk level for cardiovascular disease, sample weekly menus, and even heart-healthy recipes, Cholesterol Down is the safe and effective alternative or complement to statin drugs.

5 out of 5 stars A simple plan that really works - a must for anyone struggling with high cholesterol.......2007-09-25

The 10 steps outlined by Janet Brill really works. As a result of following the plan, I lowered my cholesterol 40 points in 3 months, without prescription drugs. Having cholesterol problems on both sides of my family, I followed the plan, but had no idea that my results would be so dramatic. I was a skeptic, who hoped for the best. My doctor was so surprised by my numbers that I have referred the book to him. He took a few extra minutes during my visit to find out how I was able to make such a dramatic improvement.

The recipes that are provided in the book are very tasty and enjoyable, making it easy to follow the 10 steps. Quite frankly, I am enjoying feeling and looking better, and I look forward to introducing healthier eating options to my family and friends. I have already purchased additional copies to share with friends who have been struggling to improve their cholesterol.

5 out of 5 stars A must have tool for both practioners and clients.......2007-09-06

As fellow registered dietitian and a firm believer in a "food first" approach, I found Cholesterol Down to be a must read for anyone with elevated cholesterol. Cholesterol Down provides the tools needed to lower cholesterol without the use of drugs. The reason I was interested in reading this book was because I have several family members and clients experiencing the painful side-effects of statin drugs only to be told by their physicians that drug therapy is the only option. This book gives you the "how to" but more importanly the "why". Each step is carefully researched and explained in easy to understand language. And the recipes... fabulous! Instead of feeling bogged down by the all information available, this book is empowering and leaves you with the feeling of yes, you CAN do it- you can take charge of your own health. I have (and will continue to) recommend this book to family and clients. A client of mine recently lowered his cholesterol 150 points after following Dr. Brill's recommendations. Thank you Dr. Brill for giving the power back to the individual.

5 out of 5 stars It works! Cholesterol Down without drugs.......2007-09-05

After I retired, my cholesterol shot up to 231, with an LDL of 148. By accident, I came across this book and bought it in June, with about six weeks to get the numbers down before my doctor put me on medication. For the first time in over 30 years, I ate oatmeal and found it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. Last week, my blood test results came back--Total Cholesterol 165/LDL 93! My wife and I are ecstatic; my doctor is totally impressed and interested in the book; our friends and family who are getting older with us are stunned and buying the book.
Thank you, Dr. Brill for all the work that you have done. I highly recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars Cholesterol down: Ten simple steps.......2007-08-23

Gives good basic information for someone who is new to this condition. If you've had it, and researched it, nothing new is added.

5 out of 5 stars Cholesterol without Drugs in process.......2007-08-19

I've read this book twice. Once from our Library, then again after I purchased my own book to markup, highlight, and copy.

After bad reactions to Prescription Drugs (several times) I am determined to incorporate these 10 steps into my life style.

I have read about most of the steps and have been doing many, but nowhere have I found the steps so well fine tuned and presented into organized, easy to follow steps.

SAM-e (pronounced "sammy"), short for S-adenosyl-methionine, will revolutionize the treatment of depression in the U.S. as it has for two decades in Europe, claim authors Richard Brown and Teodoro Bottiglieri. Not an herb, not a prescription drug, SAM-e is an over-the-counter natural supplement that has undergone extensive testing and has just become available in the U.S. "Study after study has confirmed that SAM-e works as well as or better than any other antidepressant," say the authors. It also works faster and with far fewer side effects, and it seems to help osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia as well.

Stop Depression Now is more than a book about SAM-e. It also presents a four-step program to lift you out of depression and prevent a recurrence. Step 1 is a self-assessment test to determine the severity of your depression. Step 2 includes information on how to use SAM-e. Step 3 is a diet plan that emphasizes foods and vitamins that will help you feel better (and avoid those that will make you feel worse). Step 4 offers lifestyle changes and therapeutic techniques to help you in the long term.

The authors' credentials show that they know their subject: Richard Brown is an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, a psychiatrist in private practice, and a research physician; Teodoro Bottiglieri is a senior research scientist, director of neuropharmacology, and associate professor at Baylor University Medical Center, and has been studying SAM-e for 15 years.

If you are severely depressed or suicidal, have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, or are already taking an antidepressant, confer with your health professional before taking SAM-e--do not self-treat. Otherwise, the authors certainly make this supplement sound like a breakthrough tool for depression. --Joan Price

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Book great info...Sam-e works OK, but not a miracle cure!.......2007-07-05

When I first took Sam-e, I noticed great results. I gained much more engery and my spirit was so high! However, my body adjusted and after several weeks, it does not work as well. The book was helpful, however, I have found that other things work as well or better than Sam-e at a lower cost.

1 out of 5 stars Caused mania - this supplement is not as safe as authors claim it to be.......2006-10-26

The authors of this book claim that Sam-E is a supplement that has no side effects. I have never had any manic episodes in the past; however, within just a few days, my head felt like it was going to explode.

Mania is not a temporary condition that goes away once you stop taking the pill. Sure, my mood was normal a few days later, but studies have shown that the condition causes permanent cognitive dysfunction. My work performance has deteriorated to the degree that I will probably never be able to follow through with all the plans that I had prior to taking this supplement.

One might be able to argue that the supplement just revealed an underlying bipolar disorder, and we'll never know whether that is the case or not. What is relatively certain is that I might have lived at least a few more months normally before having this episode, had I not taken Sam-E. I would give anything to be able to think again.

Look up the research that shows that Sam-E causes mania in a significant proportion of unipolar depression patients and consider your options carefully before taking a risk on this supplement.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Clinical Depression.......2006-09-17

I found this to be an excellent book about clinical depression and the options for its treatment. Different brain chemistries require different approaches to relieve chronic depression. The important thing is to keep trying until you find what works for your unique brain chemistry. SAM-e works for me, and I am grateful that an MD, psychiatrist wrote this book and helped me to find the SAM-e option. Yes, life is good after depression is in remission!

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Especially for Those Who Have Been Depressed!.......2002-11-20

The book is good. It help to explain how to use SAM-e. It is SAM-e that is the miracle worker!
For those who have lived with depression, SAM-e is a real spiritual lift. Never knew life could be like this!
No, the problems do not change or go away. But your ability to deal with them improves. And if you add some good self-help books and therapy, life can really be worth living. And worth fixing what is wrong in your life, too!
If you know some one who is depressed, get this book and read it! It will enable you to be more helpful. But don't be pushy or play therapist.
Just help your friend get the help they deserve and need.
    God bless!

3 out of 5 stars SAM-e sort of works for me, but it's incomplete.......2001-10-22

I tried SAM-e over a four month period (September-December 2001)and found it to be somewhat, but not completely effective in relieving my anxiety and depression. At first, for a few weeks at least, I felt that SAM-e was giving me a moderate antidepressant-type relief for the constant tension I seem to carry around in my body. However, after this time, I either adjusted to SAM-e or its effects became less noticable to me and I started to feel like it was not working. I had that same feeling each time I stopped and started SAM-e over the four month period. For me, SAM-e is more effective than St. John's wort, kava, and Omega-3s, though I'm not sure how it compares to 5-HTP, as my experience has been mixed with that stuff. However, SAM-e has not been as powerful and effective on me as SSRIs in its antidepressant effect. But, SAM-e appears to have no SSRI-like side effects, which is certainly pleasant. And, according to Brown and others, SAM-e may even have some health benefits. In terms of Richard Brown's book, I found it to be OK, nothing special, nothing I haven't read (or tried) before about/for treating depression. He briefly discusses SSRIs, MAO inhibitors, tricyclics, St. John's wort, cognitive behavioral techniques, diet, essential fatty acids, exercise, yoga, and meditation. These things are all helpful, but are presented in greater detail in other books. And, in light of my experience with SAM-e, maybe Stop Depression Now is tad bit over-optimistic about this stuff as a miracle drug. Also, I still didn't feel like the studies Brown quotes in this book were large enough or done on a long-term enough scale to know if SAM-e is truly safe or not. It sounds good and Brown is convincing, but my experience with SAM-e has so far told me otherwise.
