Excellent resource, but guidance was helpful.......2006-02-25
Teachers and the Law (6th Edition) was the primary text used for my National-Louis University (Wheeling, IL) School Law course. Although the text implies that only information regarding teachers will be discussed, Fischer actually covers legal issues that deal with many levels of educational law including student cases, administrator cases, and even cases that don't involve teachers at all, but loosely relate to educational law in general.
This was my first exposure to any formally-presented school law information and I must confess that I was quite overwhelmed at first. Fischer tends to present a major case very clearly and then fully explains its implications and outcomes. However, he then presents several other related cases that often have conflicting or opposing outcomes to the original point.
What I learned from this text is that there is very little "black and white" when it comes to interpreting school law. I was interested to learn that even the landmark decision cases are still constantly debated in the courts and sometimes ignored when decisions are made by judges or juries. It took our experienced professor to help us understand the subtext of some of the cases and discern the probable reasons why some cases were decided in seemingly arbitrary ways.
In general, Teachers and the Law greatly increased my understanding of school law, but without an experienced professor, I would not have gleaned as much practical information.
Teachers and the Law.......2005-09-18
I received the book in good shape. The cover looked next to new and there were very little marks or highlights in the text.
A Must Read for Teachers.......2003-05-01
Case law, unless done perhaps by the likes of John Grissam, is not page turning material. However, the authors have done an incredible job of putting very pressing and often complex areas into an accessible and engaging book. Written in an easy to use question and answer format, the updated book touches on education legal issues ranging from free speech, to students with disabilities, to internet issues. While of great use for educator (or educators to be), the book could also easily be adapted for classroom use, either as a debate or research starter. Worth every penny of its price.

Book Description
Statistics for Lawyers is designed to introduce law students, law teachers, practitioners, and judges to the basic ideas of mathematical probability and statistics as they have been applied in the law. The book consists of sections of exposition followed by real-world cases and case studies in which stastical data have played a role. The reader is asked to apply the theory to the facts, to calculate results (a hand calculator is sufficient), and to explore legal issues raised by quantitative findings. The authors' calculations and comments are given in the back of the book. The cases and case studies reflect a broad variety of legal subjects, including antidiscrimination, mass torts, taxation, school finance, identification evidence, preventive detention, handwriting disputes, voting, environmental protection, antitrust, and the death penalty. The first edition of Statistics for Lawyers, which appeared in 1990, has been used in law, statistics, and social science courses. In 1991 it was selected by the University of Michigan Law Review as one of the important law books of the year. This second edition includes many new problems reflecting current developments in the law, including a new chapter on epidemiology. Michael O. Finkelstein is a practicing lawyer in New York City. He has been a member of the adjunct faculty of Columbia University Law School since 1967, teaching Statistics for Lawyers, and has also taught at Harvard, New York University, and Yale Law Schools. He is the author of a book of essays, Quantitative Methods in Law, and numerous law review articles on the applications of statistics in law. He frequently consults and testifies in litigated matters. Bruce Levin is a professor at the Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University in the Division of Biostatistics. He is the Consulting Editor for Statistics for the American Journal of Public Health, participates in clinical trials, and is the author of numerous articles on the subject of biostatistics. He has consulted and testified as an expert in many law cases involving statistical issues.
Customer Reviews:
A good book for statistical inference and explaining concepts........2007-05-23
I am someone who currently teaches statistics and picked up this book after one of my professors in college recommended it to me while I was learning stats in Grad school.
This book is a good read if you plan on explaining statstics concepts to an audience. It is very light on math and at times uses statistical terms that have not been defined previously. You should attempt to read this book only if you have a already taken a course on statistics. While you might be able to get through the inital part of the book without too much of a background in stats the latter chapters will be hard to comprehend without a stats background. Some of the things that I like about the book are:
1. The numerous legal case studies
2. The probing questions that make you think about your data and the methods employed to analyze your data.
3. The inference gained from applying various statsistical methods to you data.
In the grand scheme of statistical learning where does this book fit in?
A lot statistics books use rather abstract examples to explain concepts which makes it hard to explain concepts to others. This book on the other lets you have a meaningful and intelligent discussion about concepts and your analysis. So I see this book as facilitating discourse.
It would be great if the author could add more analysis, maybe print outs from software packages, access to the data used, to the book.
best law book ever.......2002-08-22
Some reviewer for a statistics journal called Phil Good's "Applying Statistics in the Courtroom" the best book ever written on statistics and the law. Given the fine books by Finkelstein, by Gastwirth and the deGroot, Feinberg and Kadane book, I think that was a gross overstatement. Phil does however get away from legalese and tries to present key issues.
Finkelstein is a lawyer who with Herbert Robbins helped define what statistical evidence should be. He is well educated in statistics and his first edition was a classic. This book maintains the good features of the first book and provide a nice update with modern advances particularly in genetics. It is an introductory statistics text for lawyers with little or no statistical background and it teaches them the methods utilizing legal cases as examples.
I was very much impressed with the authors' analysis of the Florida vote in the 2000 Presidential election that Finkelstein presented in a talk at the Joint Statistical Meetings in New York in August 2002. I heard the talk and discovered that this meticulous and interesting analysis is covered in the book, section 4.5.3 "Election 2000: Who won Florida?" This detail is typical of the nice interplay between statistical methodology and important legal questions. It is just one example of the gems in this book!
The chapters are 1. Descriptive Statistics, 2. How to Count, 3. Elements of Probability, 4. Some Probability Distributions, 5. Statistical Inference for Two Proportions, 6. Comparing Multiple Proportions, 7. Comparing Means, 8. Combining Evidence Across Independent Strata, 9. Sampling Issues, 10. Epidemiology, 11. Survival Analysis, 12. Nonparametric Methods, 13. Regression Methods, 14. More Complex Regression Models.
With many interesting and famous cases as examples this book is valuable to statisticians like me as well as to attorneys.
Statistics for statisticians.......2000-02-11
This book will prove USELESS unless you already have a strong grasp of statistics concepts. It is NOT a math book though it claims to be one.

Great book!.......2007-01-10
This is a great book and will be helpful in my daughter's future library for referral.
terriffic.......2007-01-05
While this is only a soft cover book, it is a terriffic resource. It's outline format lays out all of the common issues seen in forensic pathology, with all of the various arguements made by other forensic pathologists described in easy to understand terms. I am a trial attorney who tries murder cases for a living and this book is a tremendous resource - the best I've ever seen.

Customer Reviews:
Fundamentals of Legal Research.......2000-04-05
Fundamentals of Legal Research is one of those gems of books on subjects that can be rather technical. It is clear and basic enough to be of real use to the novice, and comprehensive enough to serve as a good review for even the veteran legal researcher. The book describes sources of the law, case reporters, digests, and legal encyclopedias and provides the reader with the basics steps for doing legal research, along with tips on doing research in the areas of English law, federal taxes, international law, etc. It also provides aids on computer-assisted research, legal citations, Shephard's, and other services. It is well-written and easy to understand but does not talk down (or "up") to the reader.
Everything appears to be here, form Dallas to Wheaton in Supreme Court reports through the modern reporters. If you want to research a legal case, administrative law, legislative histories, or court rules and procedures, the tools and sources for doing so are here. Foundations of Legal Research is a good addition to both the layman's and the lawyer's libraries. It is a pleasant tour and investigation of what can be a dry subject, with enough information and resources to enable the reader to learn all the basics of legal research and then some.

Each chapter includes examples and issues that give paralegals opportunities to examine potential solutions and develop their reasoning abilities. Judicial options show how the courts handle dispute resolution issues when the outcome is not certain. Web site resources, a glossary, and index provide quick references for locating materials in the book.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2007-01-07
One of the blogs I read in anticipation of my first year was authored by an obviously succesfull student and he recommended this book. Shame he is a commie. An outline on your first year with a solid emphasis on legal writing, outlining and exams. I found the legal writing section to be very useful because I didn't have a very good legal writing professor. Some cold hearted conservatives argue that academia is where professionals who couldn't hack it in the big times end up earning their bread. If law school professorships are where dejected high power attorneys get banished, then the dregs of this barrel of dejection are inhabited by your legal writing professor and probably your career placement director. The greatest academic surprise I encountered my first semester of law school was how much effort and time learning legal writing would take on my own. This book will help you learn the formula your whacky and/or drunk legal writing professor is looking for. Unfortunately, legal writing professors are zany and ineffective in their own individual ways so the help this book provides will be minimal. Legal writing's importance cannot be overrated, any help is good help. The glossary found at the end of this 130 page outline should supplement any need for a copy of Black's Law Dictionary but waste your money if you want; Westlaw has a copy online.

Just get it - great intro!.......2006-06-15
This book is great for someone who is just learning how to think while in law school. While some of the reviews claim that it lacks substance, this book is not trying to lay out for you everything you should do in law school. It is sensitive to the fact that different people learn differently and so some things are going to be different. However, the basic tools it is laying out for you are the necessary tools to have a head start. I found that each page was jammed packed with tid bits on what not to worry about, what to focus on, what little things mean that will just make it easier when you get your books and feel overwhelmed... basically, it is not a step-by-step guide on how to be the best law student possible - that is up to you, but it gives you the tools to understand what you are supposed to be looking for and what not to stress about.
Get it, if you are a worrisome person like me who likes to plan ahead, this book will help you create a clear vision of the basics, tell what not to worry about, and one of the most important things, show you how to write a brief. I found it very useful and am glad I read it!
p.s. I am only giving it 4 and not 5 because I would have liked for them to come up with more examples than they did, but if you are an intelligent person (and you obviously are if you are going to law school) then you will be able to figure these things out and remember them for yourself.
Good, but consider 'Law School Confidential' instead.......2006-04-16
This is a good book --- but as a current law student, the best book I've found was "Law School Confidential (Revised Edition): A Complete Guide to the Law School Experience: By Students, for Students," written by Robert H. Miller; ISBN: 0312318812. That book covers every stage of law school. It is organized so students can read relevant topics at the precise period a student needs to know the information. For example, the middle of "Law School Confidential" addresses issues faced by readers in the second-year of their law school career.
Law school tips and advice can also be found numerous places on the web, including www.toplawstudent.com.
That said, this book has some great advice and is easy to read. As a gift to an incoming law student, it certainly wouldn't disappoint.
Lots of fluff and little substance........2006-03-04
This book is written on the level of People magazine and has a very trendy feel to it. I used this book at a top 25 law school and found it to be largely useless, if not detrimental.
Not worth it.......2006-02-06
At BEST this book will give you some idea as to what law school work will sorta maybe look like. Otherwise, I think there's absolutely nothing good in this thin volume that you can't get in more detail in a ten minute conversation with someone who's already in law school.
