Book Description
From the Beat poetry of the '50s to the spoken word of today, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry brings readers the words, visions, and extravagant lives of bohemians, beatniks, hippies, punks, and slackers. Like Donald Allen's epochal New American Poetry, The Outlaw Bible will serve as a primer for generational revolt and poetic expression, and is an enduring document of the visionary tradition of authenticity and nonconformity in literature. This exuberant manifesto includes lives of the poets, on-the-scene testimony, seminal underground articles never before collected, photographs of clubs and cafes, interviews, and, above all, the poems.

Gift Praise.......2007-06-08
Ordered as a birthday gift for my 34-year-old son whom I see about every six months. Did not give it to him until the car was packed and hugs were exchanged. Trip time was delayed and bigger hugs were exchanged. I am a devious mom and knew how to plan this if I wanted a good visit. Have received numerous emails and calls beginning with "Mom, you've got to hear/read this." Bought it for him, not for me. He gives it 5 stars as a "must read," and I give it 5 stars as a good gift for young adult poetry readers.
Fantastic selection, Very Interesting, Very Moving.......2007-05-13
This book blew me away, there are stories and tidbits of lives in that book. You really feel like you made a bunch of new friends when you get to the middle. You feel how they felt, all the different people of our society. It's amazing - take post-its and mark your favorites for later re-reading. Tons of poems to keep you reading for hours and hours.
Hookin' High School Kids.......2007-02-06
Teaching high school poetry is tough--Emily, Walt--the classic poets scarcely inform the world of the average stoner/slacker/skater high school kid. This book will help break through and open the world of poetry to those who really need it. During five years of teaching at an alternate public high school, I bought half a dozen of these, for other teachers, for especially promising students, to replace copies boosted from the classroom. It's "school inappropriate" in many ways--raw, profane, real, gross--it takes real balls to use this book in public schools, but the kids will love it.
Oh, the words! The miraculous, transforming words!.......2007-01-11
This big, fat, juicy book of poetry is a feast, a literal feast of poets and poetry that you won't be studying in high school or college. It's the rebels, the outcasts, the beats, the street poets, the slammers and the damned. It's Sparrow, Tupac, Dylan, Wanda Coleman, Di Prima and hundreds more you probably haven't heard of.
If you color outside the lines, occasionally peek into the abyss with your toes gripping the edge, then you will love this wealth of words. Buy it, drink it, eat it, wear it. It's life-affirming and life-changing.
The siren song of spectacular poetry..........2006-11-05
A friend of mine gave me this book years ago.
She gave it to a mutal friend who was supposed to pass it on to me when she saw me. This girl was so seduced by the spectacular poetry that it remained well loved in her collection for years til she finally passed it on to it's original intended owner, me.
After reading it, I can't blame her.
This is the kind of book that is best described in the manner one usually saves for a spouse,
you keep in your bed and are very reluctant to share it with others.
A sensory overload on every page, it's a positively orgasmic book.

Product Description
These stories are as real as they come, they ain t no joking matter. It s a rude awakening to life, or an existence in the underworld- life underground another world, one of money, sex and drugs. This is life on the streets of a big segregated city-the South side of Chicago. Bilbo knows it, for he has lived it, especially after being crowned, and given the title: KING OF THE PIMPS. He ran these streets for over fifty (50) years, and now he breaks the street code, and opens up the closet doors, and thus reveals the hidden and dready secrets behind the world of pimps, prostitutes, and other notorious street players. According to Mr. Alfred Bilbo Gholson, the law of the streets, as the law of the Jungle dictates that ...the one who does the choosing will do the paying . You must read and re-read this book THE PIMP S BIBLE , but be careful, for it might traumatize the fuc- out of you, especially when you learn for the first time on these printed pages about some of those tricks which are used on the streets and in, night clubs across America. -Sekou Tafari

pimpin.......2007-07-30
A must to ad to the pimp collection. He lays out more of the rules than his life, but if know the game, its all about rules.
The Sweet Science of Sin.......2006-01-09
A great introduction into the many life styles and forms of pimping which go unnoticed by todays standards of the word pimp. I would recommend this over The Pimp Game: Instructional Guide by Mickey Royal. To me Alfred Bilbo Gholson has a better grip of what pimping means, he also represents a classier type of pimp, one who doesn't believe in drugs and violence as a means of pimping.
Gimme a friggin break!.......2005-12-24
Grow up! It's not good to be a pimp, that's victimizing women you crazy...!
You can't judge a book by it's cover.......2005-03-16
The cover is wack. The contents reveal just how much work the author put in to this lifestyle. This is still applicable today. If only people were willing to go through the correct process pimps might once again gain respect. Read between the lines in this book. Much game it has.
This has helped me out quite a bit........2002-04-11
I live in a nursing home, and this book has taught me how to deal with all the old biddies that live here. I am getting more attention than ever in the love department. I have also learned how to place myself at the top of all the other old men here, without even having to resort to any weaponry like the fellows in this book. The concepts are really the same; instead of cruising around in a Cadillac, I cruise up and down the halls in my wheelchair. The book has made this managed care facility worth living in!

Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith
ASIN: 1932902643 |
Product Description
An historical account of twenty-five biblical crimes, the people involved, the consequences of their actions and the lessons they learned.
The bible is filled with crimes committed by the famous and infamous. This books studies twenty-five crimes and provides the biblical context, what the crime was at the time, what crime it would be now, the punishment as told in the Bible and what would be a typical punishment today. With a plot line that can be truer then fiction, Criminals of the Bible is entertaining, informative, accurate and throught provoking. A must read for anyone interested in crime, current events, social issues and history, as well as college students, pastors, Bible study leaders, biblical students and seminarians.
Customer Reviews:
For 17 years old an up.......2007-03-20
The Bible can be a shocking book. It contains enough stories to keep you busy for months and is full of intriguing and complex characters. Mark Jones' new book, Criminals of the Bible, follows 25 such stories and breaks them down into easy to understand formats. Each chapter focuses on a different scenario and follows the following outline (as stated by Jones):
1. The scriptural reference for the crime,
2. A short biography of the principle character or characters,
3. The legal, social, and political definition and context of the crime for that era,
4. The same crime viewed through a modern legal, social, and political lens, and
5. The lessons that can be learned from the crime, on a societal or individual level.
The writing is to-the-point and easy to understand. Jones explains legal jargon in laymen's language and teaches the reader something about biblical history along the way. Criminals of the Bible looks at the chosen individuals and their accompanying crimes in a way that sheds modern light on each situation. These include Cain for murder, Pharaoh for genocide, Amnon for rape, and Jeremiah for sedition, among 21 others.
This book has been carefully written and researched, but I would recommend using discretion for any readers under the age of 17. Although Jones does not glorify the crimes committed, nor does he describe them in too much detail, the modern day comparisons are not light reading. His book will make a wonderful aide for students seeking a degree in law or criminal justice or for any young adult who desires a deeper understanding of these accounts. Considering the serious content, this book must be taken as a reference tool and used as such. - Lauren Steigerwald, Christian Book [...]
Interesting concept.......2007-02-14
The author provides an interesting way of looking at Biblical people and comparing their punishments to punishments given today for the same crimes. Thought provoking and great conversation starter.
From the author.......2006-10-17
I wrote this book with a couple of different audiences in mind. One, the person who wants to study the Bible in earnest while at the same time learning the lessons that the Bible teaches to the modern reader. Two, students of criminal justice and those who are interested in crime get to see a blending of these two fields. When I was conducting my preliminary research toward the writing of this book, I found nothing on the market like it, so it really is a first in this area.
A Thought Provoking Read.......2006-10-15
I expected a book similar to Bad Girls of the Bible and was pleasantly surprised to find out it is a far more serious study which has deeper and more thought provoking content. The author is a criminal justice professor at a major university and, coupled with his biblical research, has uncovered twenty five criminals and their crimes. Some famous (Jesus is identified as a criminal because he was considered guilty of blasphemy) and the infamous (Cain obviously committed premeditated murdur). Then the author goes a step further by writing about what crime each would be today and then challenging the reader to determine for him or her self what lessons we in the twenty-first century can learn from these crimes. A riveting read. As good if not better than most novels. Highly recommended.
Book Description
With a gift for telling a story in a factual but folksy manner, Don Reid reflects on the lives of biblical people such as Abraham, Joseph, Esther and John the Baptist. Don lets us see a little bit of ourselves in the lives of these men and women and when you get down to it, they were not super-humans; they were just folks like you and me.

The Bible's most famous and infamous figures.......2002-11-05
Heroes And Outlaws Of The Bible: Downhome Reflections Of History's Most Colorful Men And Women by Presbyterian Elder and Sunday School Teacher Don Reid (who is also an original member of the country music signing group the Statler Brothers for nearly forty years) is an amazing and revealing look at the Bible's most famous and infamous figures. Presenting Biblical stories in plain layman's terms, Heroes And Outlaws of the Bible is an eminently readable yet utterly fascinating retelling of timeless struggles. As entertaining as it is informative, Heroes And Outlaws Of The Bible is very highly recommended reading.
Heroes and Outlaws of the Bible.......2002-10-14
I love this book!! It is so interesting. I learned so many exciting facts about these Bible characters and about the Bible, (I can't wait until we study one of these people in Sunday School) It was so inspiring for me and sent me back to the Bible to reread these accounts again, this time with greater interest and insight into these characters, the greatness of God and the privilege of salvation. It also sent me into myself to take a good look at me. When I was finished reading the book I didn't have that usual let down feeling, I just read it again. It is strange how much I missed the first time. It is not a very long book but it is packed full of wonderful reading.
I recommend this book for anyone anytime. It is a book that will be read over and over.
Most enjoyable and enlightening.......2002-07-31
I loved this book because it relates some great stories in a highly entertaining, easy to read fashion (the author has a great sense of humor) without ever being "preachy" or "heavy-handed". This writing style makes it very easy to absorb (and appreciate) the very important points being made by the author. I can see this book appealing to those just starting to read the Bible as well as those who are already students of the Bible. Don Reid does an exceptional job of making the people of the Bible seem just like you or me, which makes relating to them that much more special.

Customer Reviews:
not very readable.......2007-08-16
After reading Picirilli's excellent book on "Free Will and Grace", I was looking forward to a Bible commentary by him as I would be someone with similar theological convictions. However I found thís commentary very unreadable with not a lot of stuff I could actually use in my teaching ministry. I felt that much of the commentary was not relevant or obvious. I found no real new insights into the text. The fact they use the KJV version of the Bible did not help its readability.
Customer Reviews:
Easy, detailed and complete.......2002-01-05
The Outlaw's Bible is one of the best or maybe the best in how to apply your constitutional rights in any legal situation. I can say this because I'm a law student and this type of information is hard to come by. It fully explains the most usefull constitutional laws you can use in case you find yourself in some legal trouble and also it teaches you how to use them for yourself and make them work, all in an easily readable form. And at the end there's a 10 commandment list for keeping it cool with the law and how to avoid confrontations. I HIGHLY recomend this book for anyone who may have trouble with the law. I gave it 4 stars Just because its a little outdated but besides that, the book is just near perfect.

This book sucks.......2002-11-04
This has got to be one of the dumbest books I have ever read. Not only is it really short he quotes the bible almost every page. There is very little info on anything he did. Save your money
Not Long enough.......2002-01-10
I really liked the sound of this book and felt it would be an interesting read! Unfortunatly i was surprised at how short it was and how large the writing was! In my opinion the writer has a lot of knowledge and experience to share unfortunatly i felt i was reading a brief discription of this guys autobiography rather then the actual thing! He went on too much about jesus has saved him and not enough of why he needed saving!

Heroes and Outlaws of the Bible (Audio Cassette).......2004-04-28
I definately recommend this book. I actually listened to the Unabridged book on tape read by Don Reid himself. I've listened to it a couple of times now and really wish that it was longer and went into detail on more people! Is there a part two coming?
HEROS AND OUTLAWS OF THE BIBLE.......2002-11-01
I read the book upon arrival. Today, I'm going to read it again.
I was amazed when I read these stories. The scriptures are difficult to understand for the laymen. Don has made it intersting and at times entertaining. Knowing him and his ability to put lifes situations on paper, then in song for so many years, enabled me to really enjoy this book.
