Included here are not only in-depth reproductions and detailed discussion of the Papers' origins, but also an exclusive new Paper created especially for the book and set into a tray inside its back cover.

Lovely and Inspiring.......2007-08-28
You don't have to be a designer to enjoy the ecclectic array of topics and visual stimulation that is included in this book. But design professionals will truly enjoy the Pentagram backstory and insight into the creative process of this groundbreaking firm.
A keepsake cornucopia.......2007-07-29
Designers and others of course, love nicely produced keepsakes. Paper companies latched onto the idea years ago of having their paper samples beautifully designed and printed. I've still got several Broad Spectrum samplers from Simpson Lee Papers designed in the early sixties and an almost complete set of the stunning Imagination series from Champion Papers issued in the sixties, seventies and eighties.
Pentagram first issued their delightful and intriguing keepsakes in 1971 given away to their clients and although it doesn't say so in the book they were also available on subscription, the first four were a £1, the next three £2 each but they gave up charging from number eight, probably too much administrative hassle.
The book is a wonderful celebration of the thirty-six Papers issued up to 2006. Each one has a few spreads shown (though not every page) so you'll get a good idea of the wide range of subjects: Paper 17: Mao badges; Paper 11: Norman Bel Geddes amazing 1937 City of Tomorrow or Paper 15: a few pages reproduced from a 1924 book about what can be seen from a train window between Paddington and Penzance, England. My favorite is Paper 16: Kingswalden Notes, a seventy-two pager showing architect Quinlan Terry's handwritten journal with his beautifully precise architectural drawings for a 1971 country house.
Kit Hinrichs, from Pentagram's San Francisco office, designed the book and from front to back it's a visual treat to look at. Excellent typography, printing (175dpi) paper and inserted into the inside of the back cover is your copy of Paper 36!

A Collection of Eclectic Reading.......2007-03-08
To be blatently sales related, an organization such as a design firm has a difficult time in selling itself. What can you say that doesn't sound like pure puffery - we do neat designs, we have brilliant people, look at what we've done in the past.
The Pentagram partnership instead decided to publish a series of papers, monographs really that talk about something that interestes the partners. The papers cover an eclectic range of subjects. A paper on Cuban cigar bands may be followed by a paper on rural Australian mailboxes or improvision in Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The papers have enough interest in their own right, in their acceptance by the Pentagram customers that they have kept up this practice for 35 years. And they keep the name Pentagram in the minds of their readers.
Here for the first time are all of the Pentagram Papers bound together in a single book.
Book Description
Pentagram is an international design consultancy founded in 1972 with offices in New York, London, San Francisco, and Austin, Texas. Pentagram Book Five is the company's fifth monograph, highlighting 50 case studies of its projects from the last five years -- 1993 through 1998 -- across the fields of graphic design, industrial design, and architecture. Pentagram Book Five is both a celebration of the creativity and a testimony to the collaboration of Pentagram's partners, each of whom brings an individual voice to the firm's idea-based design. From the start, Pentagram's partners balked at the common practice of designing in the vacuum of specialization, choosing instead to bring together a broad range of designers, disciplines and backgrounds to collaborate on projects. The combined efforts of these architects, product designers, and graphic designers have landed them coveted work with such diverse clients as the American Institute of Architects, Coca-Cola, Swatch, and Toshiba, who chose Pentagram for the unique perspective this collaboration brings. Edited and introduced by communications journalist Randall Rothenberg, Pentagram Book Five is also a how-to, giving insights to the way Pentagram's partners approach the problems given them by their clients: How to bring new audiences to a struggling theater? How to make computers a natural part of the kitchen? How to sell the Bible to readers of contemporary fiction? How to create a feeling of "heritage" in a manufactured town? Each case study takes the reader through the designers' and clients' thought processes and shows why the project is successful, in terms of both business and design requirements. Pentagram partners represented in the book include: Lorenzo Apicella, James Biber, Michael Bierut, Robert Brunner, Michael Gericke, Kenneth Grange, David Hillman, Kit Hinrichs, Angus Hyland, John McConnell, Justus Oehler, Woody Pirtle, John Rushworth, Paula Scher, Daniel Weil, and Lowell Williams.
Customer Reviews:
Great Design Firm, but an Average Book.......2000-11-28
Pentagram is one of the best design firms on planet earth, so this book is a must have for a creative professional. BUT the book lacks real inspiration - it's very dry stuff. While the volume has many pretty pictures with "case studies" the book doesn't really tell you a story. The work itself is very good, but you can see that in an awards annual like Graphis. You just get the feeling that they didn't have any fun putting this book together. I judge my design books on how often I run to them for inspiration - and this volume doesn't rate too high. I have an ancient book by the founders of Pentagram (Fletcher, Forbes & Gill) which blows these kids out of the water. So this book is a must have for the reference library, but you may want to wait until it's on sale.
Good design at its best.......1999-09-17
Pentagram...what more do you need to know? It gives amazing insight into the thoughts behind their work in 50 examples. The forward contains a short but very complete description of the history of this powerhouse company of design. A must have book for anyone who studies or loves "good design" of any kind.

Corporate design may often look as though it were created by a machine, or a committee. But the most memorable and beautiful consumer products, packaging, and environments are the work of individuals with high standards and a unique vision. Profile Pentagram Design focuses on the personalities of the 19 partners who run the world-famous firm based in London, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, and Austin, Texas. Lively essays by 19 writers, including radio host Kurt Andersen, novelist Louis Begley, and author Alain de Botton, humanize the firm's serenely iconic status. Each partner's approach involves a personal blend of intuition and analysis. Kit Hinrichs, who has worked for companies from Crocker Bank to Dryer's Ice Cream, says he creates "time bridges" in his work with treasured objects from his suburban California youth, including Boy Scout merit badges, Popular Mechanics magazines, and an edition of the Bible in which key passages were printed in red type. Daniel Weil says his understated designs for plates, blankets and other cabin accessories for United Airlines were based on a study of purchasing systems and business customer expectations. While Pentagram is known for the elegance and clarity of its work, some of the partners push that classicism into unexpected places. Paula Sher's passion is letterforms. She views typography as a kind of illustration, with huge, bold letters staking out psychic territory on a poster or swarming over a building. Then there's DJ Stout, former art director at Texas Monthly magazine, who put a drawing of Ross Perot as Alfred E. Newman on the cover of the June 1992 issue. As a Pentagram partner, Stout's wit takes more subtle forms, including his canny remake of an early Land's End lighthouse symbol into a timeless emblem-a stack of three white stripes topped with a triangular beacon. Elegantly designed (by Pentagram), with more than 200 illustrations, this book is a must for anyone interested in the look of contemporary objects, from books to buildings. -Cathy Curtis

The book is a unique collection of essays on Pentagram's nineteen partners by best-selling authors, revered design critics, editors, and other well-known cultural figures. Eloquent and insightful explorations into the personalities, thought processes, careers, and work of the different partners, the essays are generously illustrated with examples of both key projects and lesser-known works. Book Description
New York City, the 1960s: Inside a ramshackle studio known as The Factory, the post-war art world encountered the industrial revolution. For more than two years, Nat Finkelstein was on the scene, documenting the explosive emergence of Pop Art, a subversive spectacle created by the constantly calculating Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol: The Factory Years is an extraordinary photographic account of the twisted, the addicted, the nameless, and the famous. As a member of the club, Finkelstein discreetly captured icons in the making, including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Allen Ginsberg, Edie Sedgwick, and Nico, along with such legends of another era as Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchamp. And, of course, Warhol himself. Engagingly sequenced by renowned design firm Pentagram, Andy Warhol: The Factory Years features Finkelstein's seminal black-and-white photographs, in addition to several series of previously unpublished color photographs that were thought lost for the past three decades. Finkelstein accompanies these striking images with vivid memories, poetic recollections, and acerbic commentary, providing both visual and intellectual insight into the culture of The Factory.

Worth buying but only just: color photos a big plus!.......2003-11-17
It is not a little ironic that the photographic record of an artist as prolific and as wrapped up in making and taking film and photographs as Andy Warhol was suffers from a dearth of great photos of the scene of Andy Warhol, The Factory and his Superstars: For real. I mean, I would love to own a book that is just chockablock full of all of the characters, primary, secondary, tertiary and beyond who populate the pages of the many books about Andy Warhol and the Warhol Experience. Unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be any out there. Most of the books by and about the actors in the Warhol drama are text-based with a few, often the same few, grainy, shadowy, poorly framed black & whites. This book is an attempt by one to bring together more and better photos that fans such as I desire. It is a fair effort but only just. The book is over-size or 'folio' form which is GREAT, and mostly photographs. The text is composed of an opening statement of a couple of pages of over-sized type by the author followed by lots of photographs. The essays contain some valuable information that have the ring of truth to them, but they also seem spontaneous, off-the-cuff and free associative and as a result are not easy to follow. They are more blurted out than intoned, if you get me. The book is printed in the UK on non-glossy heavy stock. I'm unsure if this was done to save money or to impart a flat, gritty, industrial feel to the photos. It is a different look than anything else out there about Warhol and I can live with it; although, I catch myself wondering what this book would look like if done on really expensive, glossy paper with top notch production values. The author explains at one point that his photos were criticized by media critics for being odd and unconventional. He states that today this is recognized as a somewhat ground-breaking and very original and excellent representation of the scene. I think that they are a bit odd and unconventional. There are some great shots there though, and the author gets some portraits of Edie Sedgewick that are heart-breakingly prescient in retrospect. There are a couple great shots of Nico too and, of course, Andy. I was pleased to see some good ones of Taylor Mead and Paul Morissey which is a refreshing change; although, I must say that it would have been cool to see how the author would have represented Andy's mother, Billy Name, and Andrea Feldman. Oh, well, I suppose one must be happy with what one can get. I believe that if you are a huge Warhol admirer such as I you would be mad to not own this. If you are curious but indifferent to Warhol and the scene, right now as I speak you can buy this book right here on Amazon for a fraction of what it is worth and you should buy it NOW. If you don't care for Andy Warhol or care about him this book will certainly not change your mind so don't bother.

Book Description
The high-profile magazines call prestigious portrait photographer Nigel Parry for only the most illustrious assignments: President Bill Clinton for The New York Times Magazine; Martin Scorsese for Vanity Fair; Dennis Quaid for Entertainment Weekly; Susan Sarandon for Premier; Tommy Lee Jones for W; John Cusak for GQ; Jake Lamotta for Esquire; and Liam Neeson for The London Sunday Times; and so on. With such distinguished occasions to encounter the powers that be, Parry has used these opportunities to create his own portfolio of private images of today's top movie stars, film directors, musicians, politicians, and sundry entertainment celebrities. The result is Sharp, a collection the likes of which have never been seen before. Parry's exacting precision, most spectacularly distilled in his disquieting close-ups of the most powerful people in the public eye, places the viewer face-to-face with pop culture movers and shakers on a level unprecedented in contemporary celebrity portraiture: Giorgio Armani's steely-eyed determination; Sir Anthony Hopkin's spine-chilling intensity; Meryl Streep's delicate grace; Placido Domingo's actor-like transparency under opera makeup; Asia Argento's sexy demureness; Nicolas Cage's "will kill you" attitude; Michael Caine's serene distance; Tommy Lee Jones' plaintiveness; and Christopher Walken's evilness, and many, many others. All are framed tightly within Parry's brilliant lenswork, allowing one repeated viewings that never tire or bore.
Customer Reviews:
Film Noir look!.......2005-03-26
This book is indeed a bargain if you are a fan of dark moody B&W portraiture. Along the likes of Corbjin, some of Rolston, Matt Mahurin, Albest Watson,Parry manages to do more with less light.
As for the criticism of monotony this is suppose to be a monograph which is a collection if images that are part of a theme.
If you think his lighting is simple and boring, set it up and see if you can get the same results. Now add into the mix a limited time with a famous ego and see how you do. The fact that he gets what he does in this age of restrictive celebrity photography is amazing. The "real life" lighting doesn't always flatter the subject in a way that would drive most publicists over the edge.
It is BARGAIN PRICE for a reason.......2005-02-13
Shallow photographic wanking without flavor or soul. I think that a good test for any celebrity photography, is to put forward the question - "would the image work if the subject were not famous'. Hmm.
So take the test with this book, and perhaps any of Mark Seligers drivel , with this new hypothesis. If the image is visually interesting, despite the fact that the subject is famous, then drinks all round. If, however, the image looks more like a polished stock portrait image, then.....you know who I'm talking about Parry, you thoughtless bounder.
Impressive roll call but visually monotonous.......2002-12-10
Sharp is described by the publisher as "a collection the likes of which have never been seen before", a book with such "brilliant lenswork" that it allows one "repeated viewings that never tire or bore."
If you are a photo editor that wants to run images of celebrities that depict every pore, with contrast on the image so intense that the subjects look like coal miners on their way home after a day in the pits, then this is your man and he's in the phone book under Creative Photographers, Inc.
In short, while Sharp represents an impressive roll call of celebrity faces, Parry's style is quickly revealed to be visually monotonous in the form of a collection.
Wonderful.......2002-11-18
Nigel Parry's Book sharp is a visual delight. His portraits are beautifully composed and capture that exacting moment as a photograph should....
These outstanding portrait photos are enhanced.......2001-03-16
Sharp is an impressive, 144-page, coffee table book showcasing Nigel Parry's black and white celebrity portraits. Parry uses his camera framing and lighting to present private images of movie stars, film directors, musicians, politicians, and entertainment celebrities in a totally new perspective that is both memorable and thought provoking. Highly recommended as a significant and welcome addition to any personal, photography school, professional, or community library collection, these outstanding portrait photos are enhanced for the photography study and connoisseur by an informative essay on Nigel Perry's life and work by Liam Neeson.

This is a great introduction to Golden Techniques for those esoteric students who read much and want to take a break from their reading. The CD is clear, concise, and Regardie's pronunciation of the terminology is superb. Expect more lucid dreams with the very first usage. Excellent, vital, material.
Customer Reviews:
Not exactly cutting edge ..........2001-08-28
Pentagram's Compendium is, as far as I'm concerned, not a very exciting book. There is a sense of déjà vu all over the place. There are some happy exceptions, but generally it's the kind of design that has been around for at least 10 years. There is a lot which is clever, witty and beautiful in the conventional sense, but all too often the design collapses under its own weight. There is so little excitement! Compare this to Bruce Mau's Life Style which is an achievement in a different league. I think Mau has his finger on the pulse of our age. He wrestles heroically with the contradictions and paradoxes of his work and his book vibrates with these worries and tensions. The Pentagram book is much more suave. This is not surprising given that the collective was founded in the early seventies by a bunch of 30-plus designers. The most interesting aspect of their approach has nothing to do with their design: it's their loosely coupled organisation with seventeen partners working in three different cities that has managed to thrive over three decades. I assume that many of the corporate dinosaurs of today will continue to call on Pentagram's undoubtedly solid design expertise. But the vicissitudes of the cybereconomy demand a more vicious, tormented and volatile kind of design. For that I would revert to Mau.
