Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2006-11-20
I'm surprised there are not many ratings for this book which is the most commonly used Income Tax book in universities. I was happy with it and found it quite challenging. Its humanly impossible to finish all the problems and exercises in a semester.
Don't rely on this book for an online course.......2006-01-19
This book is filled with information but is not easy to follow. The ethical questions do not provide answers which leave you wondering if your own conclusions are accurate. The format tries to cover too much information without going in debth about anything. I used this book for an online accounting class and it was of very little help to me. This truly was one of the worst text books I've ever used.
Late .......2005-09-23
The shipping took 3 weeks and too late for class so I'm returned book I haven't heard anything I wouldn't recommend you to buy from this site
Happy Student!!.......2005-09-19
In great condition & ordered exactly what was promised. This book is very comprehesive. Gave me everything I need to know to file my tax return. ALOT of INFO. It's like having a personal tax planner right in your own home & you can plan at your own pace!

Book Description
Unlike other tax guides, this is an encyclopedia of legal deductions that entirely sidesteps tax loopholes, tax avoidance schemes, and questionable areas of law. Written in alphabetical order, the book saves readers the onerous task of hunting through a maze of index entries. Complex, confusing tax and accounting terminology has been replaced with simple, straightforward English. Also included are inspiring quotes, little known facts, and witty cartoons to cheer up readers as they tackle this often-intimidating subject.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Didn't Hold My Attention.......2007-09-22
This book didn't hold my attention very long. I figured instead of learning all this stuff I'd keep good records and take the information to an accountant.
Taxing questions.......2007-04-03
This book is clearly for people in business for themselves. But remember laws change every year, so make sure to get a yearly undate.
OK as a reference dictionary.......2005-07-26
The book is useful as a reference dictionary of accounting and tax related terminology. I was expecting instead a listing of deductions as implied by the title.
Best Layman's Tax Book.......2005-07-11
No tax code just no non-sense explainations of what is and is not deductible. I am a tax preparer and I give these to all of my small business clients
Great addition to your library of books on biz deductions.......2004-11-12
This is a great book for starters. It shows each deduction with explanation. I still use it as a reference before calling my accountant. There is not much surprises as far as new deductions but this books is a great addition to your reference library.
Anyone who is self-employed should own 422 Tax Deductions to educate yourself about your possibilities.

Customer Reviews:
Wrong textbook for school........2007-09-30
The book in and of itself is great. It is not the correct book for school. It does not come with turbo tax and RIA checkpoint cd's. You will need each of these student versions too complete your assignments. Thompson publishing offers the full version for about the same amount of money.
Good condition por the price but...........2007-09-04
The delivery of the book was fast, the book was in perfect conditions, BUT it did not include the CD (turbo tax softare) so just pay attention when ordering a book to make sure it comes with all the necessary.
But overall it was a good purchase.
Confused.......2007-06-24
I have to purchase this book for class and am a bit reluctant after reading the reviews. It seems as though the last reviewer knows or works for Hoffman. I am paying over $150 for a book and I therefore want up-to-date, well organized and well written information.
Great Book!.......2006-06-12
This is an excellent book to learn taxation from. I used West taxation books before going on to a career at a big 4 accounting firm!
As far as the previous reviewer, who is obsessed with out of date charts and tax forms....she/he doesn't really understand taxation. Tax codes change year in and out. When these books are published they go with the latest possible information.
Besides, if your goal is simply to learn the basics of preparing taxes, why is it so necessary to have all the current years tax code info? Especially when the tax code doesn't "usually" change a whole lot from year to year.
Anyways, I have checked out other tax textbooks, and this is the one I'd recommend (being someone with SOME experience in this field)
Talk your teacher out of this book!!!.......2005-02-05
If your course requires this book, like mine did, go to the administrator of the school if you have to but talk them out of it.
The book frequently references other later chapters.
The book uses out of date tax forms, when the current years are available for free on irs.gov!
The book 'shortens' tables by grouping together years that are not really at the same rate, when the correct tables are available for free on irs.gov! It only warns you about this once in chapter 8, despite doing so all thru the book.
It spends way too much time on tax laws from prior years, and decades.
The quiz that the book provides for use with the chapters is bad!
It does not take into accout §167(k) which, admittedly only apply to 2003 and 2004, but those are the years given on the test.
It allocates on a 365 day basis for the leap year 2004 when the book (5 times!) told you to use 366 days if it is a leap year.
Some of the questions do not provide enough information to determine the correct answer.
There are also questions about items not mentioned in the book at all.
Not even the woman in class who DID taxes liked this book. It is difficult to imagine anyone it would be good for, unless maybe you needed to figure out how to depreciate a building you purchased in 1986.

Customer Reviews:
Rambling, confusing.......2002-12-16
I found this book confusing. I understand the subject matter is complex, but the topic was complicated by a rambling style, lack of specific examples and too many quotes from the tax code. I admit I made it through only two chapters -- then I decided I needed to look for another book to help prepare for an overseas assignment. The book needs tighter editing to eliminate repetition, a Frequently Asked Questions section and realitic scenarios.
