Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations.......2003-05-16
This text proved an invaluable guide to the subject of hospital finances. This was a subject I was not particularly interested in, and the book surprised me. It is readable and clear. The logic flows smoothly. There are plenty of examples, illustrating assorted principles. After reading several books on the topic of hospital finances, this one stands out for its clarity.

Book Description
Covering the essentials of fund accounting, this flexible book introduces the reader to the basic accounting principles at work in both governmental and not-for-profit organizations. This brief book divides most of the chapters into independent sections, which may be covered as separate units. The information on state and local government financial reporting has been updated for coverage of the new financial reporting model, the reporting entity, and financial condition analysis. New examples have been added to more clearly describe the nature of lease accounting. The module on pension trust funds has been rewritten to reflect new GASB pronouncements in a simpler format. New material was added on the measurement of pension costs and other post-employment benefits. For accountants wishing to increase or refresh their knowledge of government and not-for-profit accounting or public budgeting.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2005-09-11
It's a text book with lots of great examples of business challenges. I was required to purchase this book for my class but I also enjoy reading it (as much as I could any textbook) because the concepts are pretty easy to understand. There are also a lot of internet resources to enhance understanding of the concepts.
>Government,
.......2003-11-05
This book concentrates on govermental accounting, and really only has two chapters that specifically apply to non-profit accounting.
Introduction to Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting.......2000-08-31
I would rate this book very highly for the non-accounting professional. The book takes the high level of technical terms and reduces it so that it is user friendly for all groups of business professionals.
I would strongly recommend this book to those readers who have a basic understanding of governmental accounting.

Aimed at the computer science student, Introduction to the Team Software Process provides a textbook-style introduction to the author's Team Software Process (TSP), a rigorous group-based design process that stresses planning, metrics, scripts, accountability, and ultimately, higher code quality. Although best suited for a semester- or two-semester-length course, this book provides a useful model for any team development effort.
This textbook focuses squarely on the team-based nature of successful software development. The author, who also invented the Personal Software Process (PSP), outlines the steps for "staffing" a classroom-based software project with different multiple member roles, such as team leaders and development managers. The Team Software Process (TSP) outlined here stresses accountability through numerous scripts and metrics. (An appendix features over 80 pages of scripts and forms that would be used over the course of the semester.) Not only does the author provide a thorough guide to choosing the right team role that fits your personality and skills, but several sections offer some "motivational speaking" on the advantage of "discipline," both as a person and software engineer.
This book does a particularly good job of defining a team's role for each stage in the development process, beginning from the initial planning stages to requirements definition, implementation, testing, and postmortem followup. There are hints for dealing with missed deadlines, staffing, and design problems.
The reality is that teams are used throughout the software industry, but many computer science students do not get much experience working in successful teams. As a first encounter with team development, Introduction to the Team Software Process provides a model for serious implementation of a smart, rigorous software method that can put readers on the right track with group development. --Richard Dragan
Topics Covered: Team Software Process (TSP) basics and scripts, building production software teams, team goals, team roles, planning, risk management, quality plan, requirements, design principles, product implementation, integration and system testing, test planning, defect tracking, documentation, conducting postmortems, team leaders, development managers, planning managers, quality/process managers, support managers.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Process for Software Devleopment.......2005-03-31
My software team used the TSP for developing a 3 release Java application over 12 weeks. There is a stiff learning curve, but once you learn it, you can quickly realize the results. This book takes the guesswork out of developing software. If you have a dedicated team that will take the time to learn it, you will be very happy with the results.
totalitarian control is not the answer.......2004-05-19
A state-of-the-art process for producing PL/I programs on punchcards. If you can master PSP/TSP, you will be more effective than 99% of all software developers at filling out forms and producing status reports. A shockingly wasteful approach to quality management.
Outstanding Reference for Software Engineers.......2000-10-23
I've been involved with many different projects in a team environment. This book contains some of the best and most respected procedures to complete a team project. I've used these methods and they work well! The principles outlined in this book apply to more than just software engineering. Take a look! You'll be glad you did!
Good introduction to creating software in a team.......2000-08-30
This is a good introduction to working in a team and using good software engineering techniques such as planning and inspections. It is geared for undergraduate students, therefore the managerial roles have been created. This would probably not work out of the box for an organization that is already set up. For students, the manager roles give each team member ownership in the product while making sure each aspect of good engineering has an advocate.
The processes are written as scripts. These are very easy to follow and take the guesswork out of how to do each step in the lifecycle.
This is a process book therefore there is not a lot of technically-oriented information in the book. For example, the book tells you that you must design your software. It does not give many guidelines on what a good (object-oriented, client-server, real time, etc.) design might look like. In addition, some of the data bookkeeping is long and involved. A good tool would help with this.
Overall, this is a good tutorial and a good reference book. I used this book as a graduate student, and I continue to pull ideas out of it for use in my work.

Modern Industrial Organization (4th Edition) (Addison-Wesley Series in Economics)
ASIN: 0262032864 |
Book Description
Over the past twenty years, the study of industrial organization--the analysis of imperfectly competitive markets--has grown from a niche area of microeconomics to a key component of economics and of related disciplines such as finance, strategy, and marketing. This book provides an issue-driven introduction to industrial organization. It includes a vast array of examples, from both within and outside the United States. While formal in its approach, the book is written in a way that requires only basic mathematical training. Supplemental materials posted on the Web make more extensive use of algebra and calculus.
Customer Reviews:
Found it good but short.........2006-04-02
It could satisfy you if you want to have an idea of IO. I recomend to jump straight to a higher level book.
Outstanding........2000-12-13
The layout and content of this book is truly outstanding. Cabral's lucid explanations and balance of theory and examples, make this book a pleasure to read. The text also provides a much needed framework for thinking about the ambiguous term, "strategy." Several of the author's reviewers comment that this text is destined to become the definitive introductory text on the industrial organization and I support that view.
A clearly superior text.......2000-10-30
Just when you thought there was no need for another Industrial Organization textbook, L. Cabral has written a book so breathtaking lucid that it may stand as the definitive introductory textbook for a generation. The author adeptly combines classic industrial organization theory with the latest advances in research and modern examples. The result is at once current and timeless, and will surely engage the beginning student more than any book currently on the market, or any book likely to be written. A must have for any introductory industrial organization class.

Managing in the era of Globalization.......2005-03-30
So as to respond to the exigencies of globalization, the world of managing, managers and management has substantially changed in the last two decades or so. While some say that management discourse is to be viewed from the post-modernist perspective; others argue that we are reverting back to basics of management. Market, competition, competencies, capacity building, culture, diversity, empowerment, teams, lean organizations are some of the buzz words in general management literature today. Managers' commitment in the new era is being tested not on the touchstone of loyalty to the owner or the organization, but on performance and sensitivity to the needs of the organization and other stakeholders. In the era of globalization, the general topics in the discipline of management are also changing. But not all general management textbooks have shifted their focus adequately from traditional functions to the contemporary ones. The book under review meets this demand of the subject quite well.
Some of the salient features of this interesting text are as follows: The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and updated, including issues like organizational politics, cultures, knowledge and learning, innovation and change, managing strategy and managing globalization. Each chapter provides overview of theories involved in succinct and lucid manner including the contemporary developments in the subject concerned. The theories involved have been traced in terms of their historical development. Each chapter prescribes suggested additional readings, most of which are path-breaking works. A good bit of additional material is also available in the form of maps, images, charts, and boxes as tools for learning and examining the material. Above all, this text meets requirements of a well-written text. The reader finds the narration in a tremendous flow. The text is also supported by an instructor's manual and an interactive website that provides additional material for teachers and students, including more cases, quick quizzes, short movies from experts introducing students to main themes, as well as a free online reader of important journal articles that relate to the topics discussed.
Writing inspiring textbook is an art. Throughout the book the authors are aware of what is happening in various areas of management today. The authors rightly call it "a realist guide to management". They have also succeeded well at several places questioning the supposedly unquestionable; quite a postmodernist venture. Coherence is remarkable; rarely does the reader encounter patches of disinterest in the concepts being elaborated.

Book Description
Mistrust, argues John O. Whitney, forments meddling corporate bureaucracies that police even the most trivial transactions--squelching innovation and dragging down revenues with crippling administrative overhead. It discourages sales from talking to marketing, marketing to manufacturing, or manufacturing to design. (Or any of them talking to customers of suppliers.) And it provokes harassed managers to endlessly massage their budget and forecast numbers. . .and their superiors to doubt the results they submit.

Great insight and sharp wit.......1998-07-10
I loved this book. Whitney uses great examples and a sharp tongue to expose many of the myths of our current management thinking. It is laugh-out-loud funny at points, and his writing style flows very well. There is some very good theory in here.

Book Description
Readers will get spectacular results by following Harrington's basic principles and step-by-step plan for achieving total improvement management. First, he shows how to integrate the four competing methodologies of total technology management, total quality management, total productivity management, and total cost management. Balancing each of these factors results in solid business decisions on where to spend limited resources to ensure long-term results. Next, he puts his total improvement management (TIM) pyramid into action in 15 steps that illustrate how to: Obtain upper management commitment and participation; Construct a strong business plan; Develop a customized 3-year improvement plan out of a clear vision statement; Establish process improvement teams; Upgrade systems to prevent problems before they occur; Motivate through employee recognition programs; And more! Armed with these tools, managers will be able to coordinate the many, often conflicting, improvement efforts going on in today's organizations--thereby achieving total improvement management and renewed customer loyalty. It's a goal that American business can't afford to miss, especially in today's highly competitive global marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best overall business improvement book ever.......2007-08-22
I'm wondering why this book only has one reader (now two) rating it 5 stars.
I've read scores of books about business improvement but most if not all of them focus only in one knowledge area, e.g., The Goal/Question/Metric
Method; Operational Performance Measurement: Increasing Total Productivity; Real Process Improvement Using the CMMI, and others.
I'm still on page 216 as of August 22, 2007 but I don't have to wait to finish this book to say that it's good. The author is the kind of person that leaves no doubt that he knows what he's talking about because I've experienced the same situations - positive and negative - he described in the book. For example, we had a former president who wanted us to be assessed at CMMI Level 2 because it will attract more customers. When he found out how much it would costs, CMMI suddenly slowly became history and we had to find another way to 'improve' which costs less or at no cost (Hello?). In page 187, he actually listed the reasons why organizations get certified (assessed or whatever) and my above example is #3, market advantage.
Most important of all is that he doesn't take an atomistic but rather a holistic approach to business improvement. He stressed the cliche, 'a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.' All the good intentions in the world like 5S can fall like a deck of cards when just one manager's desk looks like a garbage dump.
I only have one complaint though and it's about the book's reference to an article written in Wall Street about China shooting 18 factory managers and workers for shipping poor quality refrigerators. I Googled for it and it seems it was just a prank or hoax article similar to the North Korean's leader destroying the moon. I understand that this book was written in 1995 and it was probably an honest mistake to believe the article was factual. But this doesn't take away from my 5-star rating.
Making Sense out of Improvement Initiatives.......2000-09-10
Harrington does an excellent job of presenting a methodology to understand how all of those improvement 'flavors-of-the-month' can actually work TOGETHER to obtain that rosetta stone business strives for - synergy - in seeking improvement. The book is very well written, easy to understand, and will serve well as both a strategy book and a reference to keep handy when one more 'initiative' arises the next month. Well worth the money. His work makes sense out of improvement intiatives.
