    Book Description

Bipolar disorder manifests itself in a variety of forms. It can coexist with other psychiatric conditions, and treatment efficacy can depend on the type of bipolar state. This book covers the full range of atypical, rapid cycling and transient forms of bipolar disorder, from atypical and agitated depression to schizoaffective mixed states. The most recent ICD category is covered, and the authors also look at the biology and genetics of bipolar disorder, along with issues relating to age (children and the elderly), comorbidity, choice of drug treatment and investigational strategies.

      Book Description

Nearly two-thirds of adolescent offenders currently held in juvenile justice facilities across the United States meet the criteria for one or more mental disorders—a fact that has many parents, healthcare providers, and legislatures wondering about our mental health systems for children. Have these systems failed so badly that we must arrest our children for crimes in order for them to receive help?

In Double Jeopardy, leading researcher Thomas Grisso considers the newest data on the nature of mental disorders in youth—examining, for example, their relationship to delinquency, the values and limits of various treatment methods, and common, related patterns of adolescent offending—and then charts a course for practitioners working within today’s juvenile justice system.

Grisso carefully evaluates the threefold obligations of the juvenile justice system: as a custodian of children with health needs, a legal system promoting fairness in youth adjudication, and protector of public safety. Double Jeopardy provides a scientific and practical foundation for lawmakers, judges, attorneys, and mental health care professionals, as well as researchers in mental health and adolescent development.

        Book Description

It has been said that how a society treats its least well-off members speaks volumes about its humanity. If so, our treatment of the mentally ill suggests that American society is inhumane: swinging between overintervention and utter neglect, we sometimes force extreme treatments on those who do not want them, and at other times discharge mentally ill patients who do want treatment without providing adequate resources for their care in the community.

Focusing on overinterventionist approaches, Refusing Care explores when, if ever, the mentally ill should be treated against their will. Basing her analysis on case and empirical studies, Elyn R. Saks explores dilemmas raised by forced treatment in three contexts—civil commitment (forced hospitalization for noncriminals), medication, and seclusion and restraints. Saks argues that the best way to solve each of these dilemmas is, paradoxically, to be both more protective of individual autonomy and more paternalistic than current law calls for. For instance, while Saks advocates relaxing the standards for first commitment after a psychotic episode, she also would prohibit extreme mechanical restraints (such as tying someone spread-eagled to a bed). Finally, because of the often extreme prejudice against the mentally ill in American society, Saks proposes standards that, as much as possible, should apply equally to non-mentally ill and mentally ill people alike.

Mental health professionals, lawyers, disability rights activists, and anyone who wants to learn more about the way the mentally ill are treated—and ought to be treated—in the United States should read Refusing Care.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every mental health advocate.......2007-04-01

I read this book and could not put it down. It really explains how our mental health policy in America became so distorted. The abandonment of our mentally ill in the name of freedom and self determination was ill thought out. This book is thorough and riveting.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic on the Failure of Deinstitutionalization.......2000-04-06

Even ten years after it was written, no other book documents the origins and failure of deinstitutionalization of people with severe mental illness so well. I only wish that the authors would update the book for the new decade.

5 out of 5 stars Madness in the Streets should not be out of print!.......1998-05-27

I am so disappointed that this book is out of print! I have been recommending it to everyone including political leaders. This book explains so well why our mental health system is failing! From the ACLU who allow our loved ones to "die with their rights on" to the anti-psychiatry movement who deny that mental illness exist. The authors have uncovered the web of a failed system which advocates need to have as a resource. This book needs to be available.

5 out of 5 stars A primer as to the reason we neglect the mentally ill.......1998-02-18

Public policy regarding mental illness has been shrouded by myth, ideology, and fanatiscism. Madness in the Steets explains the history and myths that have caused the criminalization and neglect of people with no-fault brain disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Those myths now exposed, it is a clarion for legislative change. A must read for sociologists, legislators, and those who understand the tragedy of lack of treatment.

        Book Description

Individuals with autism are seven times more likely than other people to come into contact with police and their responses to encounters with authority may not always be appropriate. Private investigator and autism advocate Dennis Debbaudt explains how typical manifestations of autism spectrum disorders, such as running away, unsteadiness, impulsive behavior or failure to respond, may be misunderstood by law enforcement professionals, with serious consequences. For parents or carers of those with autism, he offers advice on how to deal with problems arising from their encounters with professionals in positions of authority. Aimed at raising awareness and improving communication, this is a much-needed book.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read........2003-07-23

This is a must read for all law enforcement personnel, fire departments, emergency medical technicians and especially parents of children with autism. It is so important that communities use this resource to recognize the characteristics of persons with autism and strategies to help should they encounter a person with this neurological disorder. As a parent, this was a real eye- opener and made me realize how much work and education needs to take place in my own community. Thank you Mr. Debbaudt for this book!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, Practical, and Very Important.......2002-08-06

Debbaudt does an excellent job on two fronts" First, explaining to law enforcment professionals how to identify and deal with autistic people, but also encouraging parents and caretakers to take responsibility for educating their loved ones on how to deal with the police in order to avoid tragedies. People with developmental disabilities are seven times more likely to interact with the police than people without disabilities. This is an important issue, and this book is an important contribution towards helping ameliorate a significant problem.

5 out of 5 stars Law enforcement ignorance of autism endangers communitites.......2002-04-29

As a mother of a four year old autistic child, I'm plagued with the worries of "what will happen to my child when I'm gone." As such, we have set up our wills and our estates to take care of him. However, there are even more practical issues to worry about that Dennis Debbaudt brings to light in his book. People with develeopmental disorders are seven times more likely to come into contact with law enforcement than regular citizens. Our autistic children are socially impared, and the ignorance of this disorder is rampant among police ranks and other "first responders" to an emergency situation. Often "autistic traits" can be mistenterpreted as drug abuse, hositlity and beliegerence, dementia, or suspicious behavior that can appear as criminal intent. People with autism have been accidentally killed in crime situations, or have given false confessions to crimes they didn't commit largely due to police ignorance of this disorder.

This is a good primer for police and other first responders. It gives a good overview of why certain investigation techiques are not effecitve in dealing with autism. The second half of the book is directed at parents and caregivers - with good tips about informing local police of your child's condition, keeping your child safe at home, in school, and while traveling. There are also tips on spreading autism awareness to police and other first responders on a grassroots basis.

                PSYCHIATRY AND CRIMINAL CULPABILITY

How do we distinguish between sin and sickness? Few cases in recent memory so well typify the current confusion over this question as that of Jeffrey Dahmer. The confessed killer of fifteen young men, Dahmer had sex with and cannibalized his victims' bodies. Yet, because he was not found to be mentally ill—the threshold requirement in tests of legal insanity-—he was convicted and sentenced to 936 years imprisonment. How is it that such a severely disturbed person as Dahmer is adjudged sane and therefore culpable, while "Twinkiedefense" killer, Dan White and would-be presidential assassin John Hinckley, Jr., are deemed not guilty by reason of insanity? What are the origins of tests for criminal responsibility, and how is mental illness defined under them? Can causal links be shown to exist between specific crimes and disorders?

Psychiatry and Criminal Culpability explores, in-depth, these questions and many others at the heart of one of the most controversial issues in our criminal justice system today. Throughout, Dr. Ralph Slovenko, an acknowledged expert whose professional experience straddles both the worlds of psychiatry and the law, brings a wealth of scholarship and direct experience to bear on the subject. Citing numerous landmark cases and historical formulations of criminal responsibility dating back to biblical times, he traces the evolution of current legal and psychiatric notions of culpability and the relationship between culpability and insanity. Writing for both a mental health and legal audience, Dr. Slovenko clearly and eloquently addresses a wide range of important topical issues. He explains the distinctions between the defenses of not guilty by reason of insanity, guilty but mentally ill, and diminished capacity. He identifies the types of mental illness that currently qualify under the test of criminal responsibility, including disorders that psychiatrists do not regard as psychotic, but which, nevertheless, many experts assert negate responsibility. He explores the role of the mental health professional as an expert character witness in cases where it is uncertain whether the accused committed the crime in question. And much more.

Fascinating, thought-provoking, and enlightening, Psychiatry and Criminal Culpability helps guide mental health and legal professionals through the moral and technical complexities of one of the knottiest issues of our day.

                Book Description

"A thoughtful and thought-provoking exploration of how our criminal justice system should handle an increasingly common mental illness known as multiple personality disorder."
                --Georgetown Law Journal

"A provocative study of a controversial topic. . . . Saks' analyses are always clear and incisive, comprehensible even when their premises and reasoning are unfamiliarand their conclusions surprising."
                --Psychiatric Services

"Saks focuses exclusively on multiple personality, a controversial and only recentlyrecognized mental disorder. The philosophical underpinnings that frame thelegal questions of culpability, punishment, and competence to stand trial areexamined and provide the background for the author's proposals forapplicable legal rules. Highly recommended."
                --Library Journal

The idea that multiple personalities can exist within the same body has long captured the Western imagination. From Three Faces of Eve to Sybil, from Pyscho to Raising Caine, from 60 Minutes to Oprah to One Life to Live, we are captivated by the fate of multiples who, divided against themselves, wreak havoc in the lives of others.

Why do we find multiple personality disorder (MPD) so fascinating? Perhaps because each of us is aware of a dividedness within ourselves: we often feel as if we are one person on the job, another with our families, another with our friends and lovers. We may fantasize that these inner discrepancies will someday break free, that within us lie other personalities--genius, lover, criminal--that will take us over and render us strangers to our very selves.

What happens when such a transformation literally occurs, when an alter personality surfaces and commits some heinous deed? What do we do when a Billy Milligan is arrested for a series of rapes and robberies, of which the original personality, Billy, is utterly oblivious? What happens when a Juanita Maxwell, taken over by her alter personality, Wanda, becomes enraged and commits a murder which would horrify Juanita? Who really committed these deeds? Are alter personalities people? Are they centers of consciousness which are akin to people? Mere parts of a deeply divided person? Who should held accountable for the crimes? Which is more appropriate--punishment or treatment?

In Jekyll on Trial, Elyn R. Saks carefully delineates how MPD forces us to re-examine our central concepts of personhood, responsibility, and punishment. Drawing on law, psychiatry, and philosophy, Saks explores the nature of alter personalities, and shows how different conceptualizations bear on criminal responsibility. A wide-ranging and deeply informed book, Jekyll on Trial is must reading for anyone interested in law, criminal justice, psychiatry, or human behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Jeckyl on Trial.......2000-10-23

My son who is now in his late 20s and in legal trouble has been diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and bipolar disorder. Reading this book has helped me tremendously understand the disease and assist in his legal defense as well as his healing. I highly recommend it due to it's ease of reading and factual information. Had I read this book when he was in his teens, perhaps the problems he now faces would not have occured.
