    Book Description

This sweeping portrait of religion in the South puts race and culture at the center of more than a century of spiritual and political strife. Harvey deploys cultural history in fresh and innovative ways and fills a decades-old need for a comprehensive history of religion and its relationship to the central question of race in the South for the postbellum and twentieth-century period.

1 out of 5 stars A common sense question, and other points........2006-12-08

I agree with the substantive points in the previous review that address in some detail the reasons why this book is grossly flawed. Rather than rehash them, I will start by asking a common sense question. If Nyquist is right, then he has spilled the beans on the most enormous, complex, high-stakes strategic deception in the history of the world. So, why didn't the Russians, with their all-powerful intelligence apparatus, find out what he was going to do and eliminate him before he could alert the world to their top secret plans? And why didn't they do the same to Golytsin and everyone else who has advanced such claims? Or if they couldn't do that, why didn't they at least eliminate them after their books were published, and do everything they could to buy up/destroy every copy available and everyone who knew anything about them? The fact that Nyquist in particular still lives and breathes is surely proof that Russia doesn't consider HIM to be a threat; given the nature of his allegations, that is only explicable if his theories are wildly inaccurate, paranoid nonsense, rather than any sort of disclosure of top-secret Russian long-range strategic plans.

It is also worth noting that Nyquist has a website about this topic (The Final Phase), which has apparently been operating for some years. Look into the archives and you will find an interesting factoid; he has been predicting an immanent Russian/Chinese nuclear strike against the US at least since 1999. In 1999, he said it would happen no later than 2000. Then in 2001, after 9/11, he said it would happen in 2001 or 2002 at the latest. In 2003, he said the Iraq War would trigger it. Then in 2004, the end game was predicted to be no later than 2006, when Russia and China had scheduled joint war games....yet the war games have come and gone, and still no Russian/Chinese strike against the west.

Now he seems to think that the big strike will come in 2008 or 2009.
Always the ever-receding date with doom is near enough to cause the paranoid and credulous to panic, but far enough that they don't sink into despair. This makes one wonder what Nyquist's real agenda is, other than the promotion of some sort of theocratic fascism. Here's my prediction; in 2009 he'll be telling us that the Russian/Chinese strike will happen no later than 2011 or 2012. And in 2011 or 2012...you get the idea. He can keep up this game as long as anyone still cares.

By the way, a book that readers of Nyquist's drivel ought to familiarize themselves with is The Paranoid Style in American Politics, published in Harper's Magazine in 1964 by Richard Hofstadter. (It is easily available online.) Read it, and you will see that Nyquist's rantings are simply the latest expression of a mass psychosis which has periodically infected a significant minority of the American body politic for over a century, since the days of the Nativists and their agitation against Irish Catholics. The identity of the grand conspirator always changes, but the pattern of paranoid ideation is always the same. Read this article, then fill in the words "Roman Catholics" for "Communists" and "Jesuits" for "KGB" in Nyquist's diatribe and see how clearly his "arguments" fit into the long-established pattern.

1 out of 5 stars Beware the Red Menace!.......2006-05-20

The copy of "Origins of the Fourth World War" that I currently have has three featured reviews printed on the back cover in lieu of a normal blurb. Two of these reviews are from radio talk show hosts and the third is from a buddy of the author's who, if I recall, is actually featured in the book. This is actually rather appropriate, because it identifies right away for you, the discerning-if-feeling-slightly-scammed reader who purchased this book, that this is not a scholarly work. At all.

No, really, at all. "The Origins of the Fourth World War" is not the product of serious research, fact-checking, or critical thinking. It is conspiracy theory, although I'll grant that it's a particularly amusing read.

Nyquist certainly waxes eloquent, especially in the first chapters when he attempts to rip into capitalism, but at this point in my career I've read enough critiques of both to know that he isn't saying anything particularly original there. Comparing capitalism and communism is more fun to read, though clearly this man has a strong political/religious agenda of his own that is strongly theocratic in persuasion, with elements of militarism and dashes of aristocratic stratification.

The crux of the book is that the fall of the Soviet Union was a hoax, a masterful, artful deception enacted by the KGB to "dazzle the West" into a false sense of security. And the United Sta...er, the WEST, has become so decadent and complacent that when the Soviets make their glorious reappearance on the world stage they will proceed to trounce everyone in their path handily, because apparently Russians are naturally better strategists than Westerners. Maybe the Strategy Gene is best activated in the human body by vodka or something. I'm still fuzzy on that part. That's not all there is to the book - it meanders through critiques of, well, just about everything in pointing out why the West sucks and why we're going to get what's coming to us when we hear Soviet jackboots marching down Coronation Street.

Needless to say (actually, given the number of people who gave this book 5-star reviews, I'm not sure that it's so needless) Nyquist's conspiracy theory collects convenient historical facts like tasty, tasty candy and plugs them into place in the book to portray what it is he wishes to, without any appreciation of the historical context that he's sampling from. He misidentifies the blundering, bloated, bureaucratic, FRIGHTENED Soviet Union of the 1950s onwards with the deadly, purge-filled totalitarian society of Stalin in the 1930s and 1940s. He makes alarmist claims of a rearming Russia when that nation could barely beat back the Chechen rebels - and when very real evidence exists that this was the best they could do at the time. He ignores the fact that America is still very fierce, extremely warlike, and capable of fighting and winning wars very efficiently (forget Vietnam...Iraq is the new measuring stick, and had been even more so when Nyquist wrote this book).

While Nyquist does cite some of his material, he has about a fifth of the footnotes he actually needs in order to adequately back up the astounding claims he makes, if he wants to be taken at all seriously. And many of his most otherwise outrageous, radical ideas are not cited at all - most of the book's footnotes are devoted to Nietzsche and other quotations rather than providing evidence for claims. I'm perfectly willing to entertain radical ideas...it's fun to shake up the status quo, and gets lots of publicity. But if you do not back your work with evidence, with sources and documentation, then scholars will think that you are either (a) incompetent, or (b) just making stuff up as you go along. The first is excusable, though at best the writer gets a Gold Star for effort and is sent to the margins. The second is academic dishonesty. While I personally believe Nyquist is making a lot of this up, I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and claim that it was mere incompetence (or possibly a publisher's error) that made him abandon adequate citation.

The book is also written in a strange form that reminded me of the strange, disjointed prose of Kurt Vonnegut's "Hocus-Pocus," save that Vonnegut knew what he was doing. This isn't really a monograph, it's a collection of his notes, carefully numbered and categorized according to (sometimes vague) relevance in each chapter.

Enough rant. This was written long enough ago that I doubt anyone cares or will even read this review. My final word: this is an elegant conspiracy theory written by a man with no appreciation for history or for international politics, who apparently believes that going to Church and giving up MTV is going to help steel us for the coming Soviet invasion. Draw your own conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Origin of the Fourth World Wars by J R Nyquist.......2001-11-06

This book is a must read for any thinking America. It is easy to follow as it is written in numerical lists of thoughts or points the author wants to make arranged in a logical sequence to make a very valid argument. We should not be letting our personal freedoms slide by being frightened into giving them away to preserve peace and safety. Our forefathers gave up their lives when it was necessary to preserve these same freedoms we take for granted. Neither should we allow our Constitution become invalidated by manipulation. If you believe there is a Creator God and that he wrote the Holy Scriptures for our admonition you will see a clear coorelation to them in this book that is presented from a purely secular social standpoint. God pleads for us to return to him and his commandments.

5 out of 5 stars Read, research and understand........2001-03-13

Most readers would find this book interesting but few it seems have the courage or care enough to take it at face value. It is truly horrifying. It is not fiction. It is real. Virtually all of the critisism I have seen levied against Mr. Nyquists writings are little more than personal attacks and do nothing to debunk items he presents as fact. Anyone taking the time to read this book seriously and coroborate Jeffs sources, and augment that with some research of their own, will realize that current global trends cannnot, and will not go on forever. The current leader of Russia was the head of the dreaded Soviet KGB. Despite their adamance in denouncing the NMD effort, Russia has had an ABM system for decades. They are currently depolying advanced road and rail mobile 6th generation ICBMs - the Topol-M. They have had for decades and continue to develop an unparalelled civil defense infrastructure. This list goes on and on. Much of this can be found in this book, and all of it can be corroborated through reliable news sources, if one takes the time to do so. This book comes highly recommended to anyone that would like to have some good insight as to what to expect in the coming decade and would like to have some contol over their own future.

5 out of 5 stars Are we not now beyond Thermonuclear War?.......2001-02-04

Yes, you may say we are beyond this, for we are a global village and the Communists have lost. We are too "modern", and their will be no more large scale wars for mankind values life more now. Besides, we are the only Superpower and our Military is second to none, and the Berlin Wall has tumbled and trade has taken over. We are helping the Russians and engaging the Chineese. If you think this, my friend you are whistling past the graveyard. Do yourself and family a favor and read this book. Then go read some recent articles from valid reliable newswires regarding Russia and other Communist countrie's shenanigans for the past few years and then re-read Nyquist's book. Or, if you think the Communists are not such bad guys and really value life, go get ahold of The Black Book of Communism where you will find what Communism has produced in the last century - 100 Million Dead people, then go read Nyquist's book. You have to get your wits free of the idea of all this peacenik... you've been hearing on the television as it does not fit in with Mankind's Historical records. Every once in awhile someone starts shooting and although no one really wants war, It is a very common occurance. Read Nyquist's book and see thru the deception the Commies have run on us and see what is coming down the pike.

      Book Description

Race and Politics offers an analysis of the controversies that followed the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. The question of whether the still unsettled Kansas Territory should be slave or free divided the nation into hostile and ultimately irreconcilable camps, creating conditions that only civil war could resolve. The author demonstrates, however, that the fundamental issue was not slavery as such but race: whether the country, its egalitarian slogans notwithstanding, could tolerate the expansion of African Americans, slave or free.

"Rawley in his introduction, a semi-apologia, questions the need for another book on the Civil War. He answers his own question, giving two reasons: first, to reveal how the Kansas upheaval became a main political preoccupation of the country before the war; second, to emphasize how deeply prejudice pervaded the entire populace, both Northern and Southern. In filling in the structure of these two justifications, Rawley achieves his goal in an admirable way."—Gene M. Gressley, Library Journal.

"Based to a considerable degree upon an examination of voluminous manuscript sources. New data relating to inner-political maneuvers, on the part of the Democrats, Whigs, and Republicans are brought forward."—Annals of the American Academy.

In this book, Rowan, the first black Cabinet officer, and a syndicated columnist, warns that unless we act now, this country will by the end of the millennium have the same level of bloody racial strife that marked South Africa at the height of apartheid. The warning signs he cites include corporate downsizing, the rise of the angry white male, the growth of right wing militias, the war on welfare and affirmative action, the swelling black prison population and the growing popularity of Louis Farrakhan. In his chapter "How to Prevent 'Armageddon,'" Rowan recommends a massive federally enforced disarmament program, speedy prosecution of racist cops, and early and massive interventions into the lives of underclass children -- including a revival of FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps, to be paid for by the money now being earmarked for new prisons.

I own this book and thought it was an excellent read then as now.Rowan, who generally wrote biographies and newspaper articles in his nearly 60 year career in journalism, wanted this book to be a harbinger of sorts to come in the area of race realtions If we don't get our acts together. As I can see from the white nationalists reviews (I have read their reviews) and they find the book not to be balanced in it's writings of it's various citizens and our racial provocatuers on all sides and he names them in all areas of American life and no one gets spared and they are in all areas from politics to civil rights and entertainment.

        Rush Limbaugh
        Richard Cohen (washington post)
        Bob Grant
        Newt Gringich
        Jesse Jackson
        Howard Stern

and many others. The race war will be reactionary like Rowan wrote in the with Black Males tired of being assualted from all sides of from the government (genocidal war on drugs), talk radio, Think Tank intellectualls (on the left and right) the media and Black Folk who are more concerned with "colorblindness" than real justice.

Black Men like myself are the silent majority in this country and are tired of being "pushed around" and what happened in Miami last week is just the tip of the icebreg and there are Black Men who as angry than those men who plotted to bomb buildings in this country and will be better organized to carry out those plans, and Rowan expertly states his case in the various chapters I tend to think he saw Bosnia and Serbia but juxtapozed it using Blacks and America.

This book is almost 11 years old and people thought he was exggerating about his concerns about the coming racial violence that will be even more deadly in a post 9-11 world because unlike the Arabs, African American Men may have a more legitimate gripe with this government because of it's history towards us past and present. And considering that the "Conservative Media" has demonized black leaders who could keep the peace in this country, the book is a harrowing look at what can be in this so-called "experiment" in a republic. I think Jefferson's "avenging angel" is coming to collect his due and it may be already too late to turn the tide.

p.s. To the white male racialist reviewers who blasted the book,If they are not concerned about Black Folks as they claim to be, and think Blacks have low IQ's worldwide, then why are many of their reviews are on race in general?

This book is Carl Rowan's legacy and what a great book it is, and hopefully we will get to the buisness of building bridges as citizens instead of throwing bombs either verbally or violently.

        1 out of 5 stars A Waste Of Time.......2002-10-07

The opening lines of Carl Rowen's book state that the United States is "on the rocks spiritually, morally, racially and economically." The author goes on to smash everyone he deems responsible for this and the plight of the black man today.

I found this book very harsh and full of thoughts and ideas that, to me, seem very rash and extreme. Although he does quip that Farrakhan, Sharpton and Jackson are part of the problems blacks now face he reserves his harshest criticism for whites. Whites in power and white men in gerneral. He launches scathing attacks on former President's Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush. Be blasts Pat Buchannon and Oliver North. He calls G. Gordon Liddy a "troglodyte". He says Newt Gingrich is full of "self righteous hypocrisy". He accuses the federal court system of having "surrendered to racist mob psychology" for rulling against affirmative action in University's.

The author also makes the statement that blacks do commit a disproportionate number of the violent crimes in America. Most of the crimes committed by blacks are committed against blacks. He then goes on to talk about the fact that over 50% of prisoners in the penal system are black and that shows we still live in a racist society. I don't follow the logic. If more blacks are committing violent crimes, wouldn't it follow that more blacks would be in jail? I don't see how that is racist.

He points to Susan Smith who killed her children by drowning them in the car by driving into a lake. Her initial police report said that a black man had hijacked her Mazda and driven off with her two young sons in it. He points to the fact that these incidents add to racial polarization and hatred and are bitter reminders of the stereotyping of all black males as potential kidnappers, rapists and killers and warps the minds of white people. I don't know Susan Smith but obviously she is not a typical well thinking person. And I don't think her statement went toward warping any white folks minds. If you would approach the average person on the street they would probably remember the case. How many of them, do you think, would remember the initial report accusing an unidentified black man? The percentage would be very very small I am sure.

He tries to defend inner city cime in a way. First, when Jesse Jackson stated "There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then to look around and see somebody white and feel relieved." While I would not agree with this statement and the author obviously does not I would not say that Jackson surely must have been embarrassed by his statement, as the author did. Maybe Jackson truly feels this way, why would he be embarrassed? And why would the author of this book feel he can speak on another person feelings? The aurthor says that the poor black teenagers do covet the $150 sneakers and the $400 boom box but when they lack any honorable recourse to get it, who's surprised that blacks maim and murder for big bucks? Is the author serious here? Is he defending murdering someone if you can't afford what you want? Is he not adding to the black sterotype himself with statements like these?

With in the pages of this book the author continually tells me that he knows, as a black man, how white men feel. How could he? Just as I'm sure he would agree no white men can truly understand many of the feelings of black men in society. For instance he states on page 104, "I know how painful it is for a white man to get a female supervisor, and how a 'twofer' - a black woman boss - puts a strain on his manhood." What is he talking about? Why is it painful for a white man to have a women boss, of any color? Who is he to speak for me? I have a women boss and it is not a strain on my manhood. Is it different if a black man has a white woman boss? He certainly did not address this situation at all.

In my opinion the author is constantly trashing the white male and defending the black race without looking objectively. I believe that this book serves no purpose except to fan the flames of racism. From all sides. Don't waste your money on this one.

1 out of 5 stars Rowan, the Coming Race War in America-Wake Up Call.......2002-03-13

Same old rehash-whitey did me wrong.....the entire book revolves around the central theme that every person in America is bigot, closet racist, or both. This "author" goes on to defend OJ's "obvious" innocence and actually taunts the country to "bring on the race war". ...

        4 out of 5 stars It's All Whitey's Fault.......2001-11-09

This book is a good look at the mind and the assumptions of a black liberal. The main argument of the book is that all black failure is due to white racism, not black inferiority or inability to take responsibility for their own lives. The author is black, so obviously he is going to argue according his own racial self-interest; whether his arguments are true or not is highly questionable. However, some black failure can be attributed to fatherless homes, and not inferiority or racism.

The author laments the lack of civility in civic discourse, but I don't understand why. For instance, he quotes a speech given by Newt Gingrich about responsibility and then complains that Gingrich is being uncivil even though I thought Gingrich used mild-mannered, even bland, words. I guess he thought he was using so-called 'coded' racial slurs. The author doesn't seem to understand that free speech will often be offensive to someone or some group if people are allowed to criticize freely. We should all be rejoicing that we're offended because that means free speech lives and democracy is not dead. The moment nothing offensive will allowed to be said is when oppression will reign.

To his credit, he mentions how blacks like Farrakan are racist hatemongers, as he sees it, along with gentile and jewish whites. He warns that a race war might break out because of increasing racism, but other than that, the book does not deal specifically with how a race war will play out. The sensational title of the book was created to sell more copies in the apocalyptic nineties, I suppose. The book has the breezy, entertaining, somewhat superficial style that one would expect from a columnist.

He mocks the seemingly well-researched findings that blacks have lower IQs mostly fixed by genetic heredity. He looks askance at the institution that funded the research and suggests research that says low IQs are due to poor nutrition. I thought that The Bell Curve which argues for lower IQ of blacks in one its sections was much more carefully and thoroughly argued, despite its unpleasant conclusions, than the superficial and questionable arguments (or just ridicule and suspicion) that Rowan brings up. He would need a well-researched book of his own to argue against such findings point by point, not just a chapter.

To him, the high crime rate among blacks, is not due to their own irresponsible behavior, but because white racist cops go after blacks more than whites. He has the typical liberal view that no one is responsible for their own effort, behavior, success, or failure; every outcome is due to an good or adverse environment: namely, whether it is "racist" or "minority-friendly".

He gives an interesting account of the O.J. Simpson case and why he thinks Simpson is innocent. I lost interest in the matter a couple of days after it happened, so I'm not expert enough to know whether he's wrong or not.

He discusses the wooing of Colin Powell for president by the Republicans. He indicates that blacks who are conservative or Republican are sell-outs, not people that have differing views from his own. He insinuates that Republicans will only consider blacks that will follow along with what he considers to be their racist agenda.

When he discusses a time when a white teacher writes him a letter about her black students who don't do their homework and get involved in drugs, he does not take her at her word, but rather accuses her of having a prejudiced, stereotypical view of blacks. This old tired white racism argument is not convincing many whites anymore. We're tired of it. It is also bigoted against whites and ignites the coming race war because it tells blacks to hate us for their own failures. Rowan himself contributes to the race war, which is always going on in some form or another.

But it goes to show that a government or country cannot serve but once race at a time or risk favoring one over another. Race wars may be a way of races grabbing their own geopolitical territory where they can live out their own destiny without the hindrances and entanglements of multicultural societies.

And to answer tired argument with tired (but sometimes forgotten) argument, Rowan lives in a white civilization where he is able to have rights, freedom of speech, wealth, and the institutions to speak his mind about white racism. But if he lived in black-ruled Africa where tyranny and chaos and extreme poverty are the norm he would have no such rights or privileges. I don't buy his arguments that blacks are equal because blacks have never had a civilization as great as our own, unless you believe in Afro-centric pseudo-history.

1 out of 5 stars Uncle Carl gives the 'formula'.......2001-03-15

I rented this book from the library and very dissapointed. All the book contains is the same formula we've seen in countless "controversial" books. Even the cover is pretentious enough to indicate the contents are inflammatory or shocking, when in reality all Uncle Carl does is repeat various establishment platitudes about "hate".

He does not describe any "coming race war" but instead picks out several divergent groups and attacks them as "hate" groups, always conforming to the established media in his assumptions. He has the nerve to accuse the Hon Rev Farrakhan as being a "hater" (of course, good ol' Uncle Carl' is quite the lover!) but he never has the nerve or ability to back up his calumny.

In addition to the lack of content, Uncle Carl seems to write at a 4-th grade accusatory level, even more infantile than normal. 1 star for trite, redundant prose, and lack of any original content.

In The Coming Race War, University of Colorado law professor Richard Delgado argues that American law is inherently racist. It guarantees that minorities will be oppressed and that a white elite will maintain power. As he did in the Rodrigo Chronicles, he organizes the book around a series of dialogues between an unnamed professor and a half-black, half-white younger associate. Among the arguments set forth are Delgado's belief that minority judges are the only ones qualified to protect minority rights, that affirmative action should be maintained, and that court decisions striking down hate speech laws are wrong. Then there's the theory that conservatives want to end welfare in order to provoke a rebellion by minorities that will lead to the creation of an apartheid state.

          Book Description

In The Washington Post, Julius Lester praised Richard Delgado's The Rodrigo Chronicles: Conversations about America and Race as free of cant and ideology. . . . an excellent starting place for the national discussion about race we so desperately need. The New York Times has hailed Delgado as a pioneer in the study of race and law, and the Los Angeles Times has compared his storytelling style to Plato's Dialogues.

In The Coming Race War?, Delgado turns his attention to the American racial landscape in the wake of the mid-term elections in 1994. Our political and racial topography has been radically altered. Affirmative action is being rolled back, immigrants continue to be targeted as the source of economic woes, and race is increasingly downplayed as a source of the nation's problems. Legal obstacles to racial equality have long been removed, we are told, so what's the problem?

And yet, the plight of the urban poor grows worse. The number of young black men in prison continues to exceed those in college. Informal racial privilege remains entrenched and systemic. Where, asks Delgado in this new volume, will this lead? Enlisting his fictional counterpart, Rodrigo Crenshaw, to untangle the complexities of America's racial future, Delgado explores merit and affirmative action; the nature of empathy and, more commonly, false empathy; and the limitations of legal change. Warning of the dangers of depriving the underprivileged of all hope and opportunity, Delgado gives us a dark future in which an indignant white America casts aside, once and for all, the spirit of the civil rights movement, with disastrous results.

                Book Description

The authors investigate trends in racial inequality in occupational attainment in rural areas of the South since 1940. Drawing on data from the six censuses spanning the last five decades, they examine how inequality varies across local areas and how it has changed over time in different local areas. While modest reductions in inequality have been observed in recent decades, the authors document that racial inequality in rural areas of the South persists at very high levels to the present day.
