This book covers all aspects of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process technology from the characterizing and preparing the substrate material, through deposition processing and film characterization, to post depostion processing. The emphasis of the book is on the aspects of the process flow that are critical to economical deposition of films that can meet the required performance specifications.

The book covers subjects seldom treated in the literature: Substrate characterization, adhesion, cleaning and the processing. The book also covers the widely discussed subjects of vacuum technology and the fundamentals of individual deposition processes. However, the author uniquely relates these topics to the practical issues that arise in PVD processing, such as contamination control and film growth effects, which are also rarely discussed in the literature. In bringing these subjects together in one book, the reader can understand the interrelationship between various aspects of the film deposition processing and the resulting film properties. The author draws upon his long experience with developing PVD processes and troubleshooting the processes in the manufacturing environment, to provide useful hints for not only avoiding problems, but also for solving problems when they arise. He uses actual experiences, called "war stories:, to emphasize certain points. Special formatting of the text allows a reader who is already knowledgeable in the subject to scan through a section and find discussions that are of particular interest. The author has tried to make the subject index as useful as possible so that the reader can rapidly go to sections of particular interest. Extensive references allow the reader to pursue subjects in greater detail if desired.

The book is intended to be both an introduction for those who are new to the field and a valuable resource to those already in the field. The discussion of transferring technology between R&D and manufacturing provided in Appendix 1, will be of special interest to the manager or engineer responsible for moving a PVD product and process from R&D into production. Appendix 2 has an extensive listing of periodical publications and professional societies that relate to PVD processing. The extensive Glossary of Terms and Acronyms provided in Appendix 3 will be of particular use to students and to those not fully conversant with the terminology of PVD processing or with the English language.

Although this book has accurate technical content, the organization is ill-thought and amounts to little more than numerous papers stapled together under a pretty cover.

PVD from A to Z.......2004-06-03

If you are new to PVD as I am, you will find this book to be well worth the money. If the book doesn't give you enough details on what you are interested in, it will give you a ton of references to get you in the right direction. As a graduate student working on different PVD techniques including RF Sputtering, Thermal Evaporation, Electron Beam Evaporation, and Arc Deposition I use this book all the time. The only drawback is that it is huge but I liked it so much, I simply bought a copy for the lab and a copy for home.

This book is a joke! I read it to try to prepare for a malpractice deposition; after the deposition, I realized this book did not help me prepare in any way. Why doesn't the author get down to the nitty gritty? Plaintiff lawyers are manipulative and sleazy. The deposition process allows them to "broil" the defendant. The recorder did not interfere once (nor did my defense attorney) to control the vile antics of the plaintiff's attorney. My impression of the deposition process was that it was legalized witch-burning and I wasted my time reading this inane book. Don't buy it!

good primer.......2004-07-21

If you want a quick, easy-to-follow introduction to the deposition process, this book does a very good job of that. I've recommended it to many of my clients, and they all found it to be a great primer for helping them understand what happens at depositions. The book even offers some strategies for helping witnesses get through cross-examination. It's compact enough to read in a day, yet the information it contains is so on point that it completely demystifies the entire deposition procedure. Its numerous examples and sample transcript make it a good bet for anyone having to give a deposition.

This guide is a relatively small, spiral bound, 87 page pamphlet. It contains much useful information about what happens at a depostion, how to prepare yourself for a deposition, and answering the questions you will get at a deposition. It seems designed as an introductory guide for those who are either representing themselves or for those whose attorneys have not spent enough time explaining the process to them. This booklet should help calm your fears about the process. This guide is short enough that you can easily read it in an evening. It is written in plain English without the legal jargon. The author is a court reporter, not an attorney, but she clearly communicates a lot of basic information you need before going into a deposition.

Review of Handbook of PIII and PII&D.......2002-05-07

This book is a very good in discussing Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII). It falls down somewhat when discussing Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation and Deposition (PIII&D). The chapters on plasma generation and plasma-surface interactions are very good. There are some interesting treatments on bombardment over complex surfaces. The chapters on Technology are quite good. A limitation of PIII is the rather shallow depth of material modification (~100nm), unless there is appreciable temperature to allow diffusion. The addition of concurrent film deposition to PIII (PIII&D), either from PVD or CVD sources, allows thicker layers to be built up. This also introduces nucleation, interface, film growth and gas incorporation effects to the process. In Chapter 3, "Ion Implantation and Thin-Film Deposition" the authors attempt to discuss these effects though they limit the discussion to the IBAD (Ion Beam Assisted Deposition) process and essentially ignore the large amount of work that has been done on plasma-based ion-assisted deposition (ion plating), particularly that using pulsed biasing, that would seem to be more akin to the PIII&D process. This is overcome somewhat in the discussion of applications since plasma-based ion-assisted deposition is much more widely used in industry than is IBAD. The Application section has a number of interesting examples of development work on PIII and PIII&D for application but few examples of actual use in industry though I am sure that they will follow. The book is unusual in that it cites a number of patents and even has a section on "Survey of PIII&D Intellectual Property."

My feeling is that some of the authors were not very well acquainted with the PVD literature. For example, they use the term "ion hammering" for film densification by ion bombardment whereas the PVD community has used the term "ion peening" for that effect for quite some time. Overall I highly recommend the book as one that points the way to new methods and applications for the vacuum coating industry.

For example, the authors warn against engaging in seemingly harmless chit-chat with a companion before and during breaks in a deposition. The reason is one that most non-lawyers would be hard-pressed to imagine: Deposing counsel can ask the companion to reveal what the deponent said. This Book is Not About Depositions.......2006-06-17

I just went through 13 hours of deposition time and let me clue you, this woman is only giving you the basic bs and I am going to write my deposition book, because the judicial system is at best corrupt and some of the attorneys are absolutely criminals and will lie and cheat - depositions are complexed and a detailed books from a deponent's point of view and with legal ease needs to be done.

Be careful when you are being deposed. Just my humble experience and opinion. This book will not help you in anyway.

Complete Text and Handy Introductory Guide.......2004-07-22

As a monitor of the information desk at the Harold Washington Library, Chicago's main library, I regularly make referrals to people looking for all kinds of information. Whenever I'm asked about books on depositions, the first one that comes to mind is "The Deposition Handbook: A Guide To Help You Give A Winning Deposition," by Virginia A. Lathan.

But recently I also came across this book, "Nolo's Deposition Handbook," and I'm thoroughly impressed by the in-depth information it contains on all aspects of the deposition process. Not only is the book well written, but it also has a useful glossary for readily looking up legal terms. It also contains numerous examples of what the author is trying to convey. Additionally, it's well indexed. I particularly found the appendices helpful, because they contain excerpts from the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and also web site addresses for obtaining information about discovery rules for particular states. I think this book would be a tremendous asset for parties to a lawsuit, people who represent themselves in court, and even lawyers who need to refresh themselves on the many aspects of depositions.

However, because the book is so thorough, I will still recommend people check out Virginia Lathan's book. Her simple-and-concise book reminds me of "Cliff Notes," those handy little pamphlets that highlight key points and make it easier to navigate your way through the voluminous writings of complete texts. For that reason, I suggest that you consider purchasing both books, because when thy're used in unison, you'll have all the reference books you need to help you give a winning deposition.

As a matter of fact, in one of his other books, "Represent Yourself in Court" (2nd edition), Paul Bergman highly praised Virginia Lathan's "Deposition Handbook."

As typical from Nolo press writers, this is a very effective book well structured and with useful materials.
The framework given is very practical and applicable. I strongly recommend for anyone involved in a deposition.
Just to give the proof, it helped me to face 3 days of deposition by a nasty attorney as under handed as you can get....I survived it.
Thanks to the authors and in all cases, be prepared !

Useful information for anyone facing a deposition.......2000-05-11

Depositions are part of the arcane ritual of American litigation. I was recently deposed (as an expert witness) and found the book full of practical information. I can recommend it to anyone unfamiliar with the process.
