Book Description

Information Technology Control and Audit, Second Edition is an excellent introductory textbook for IT auditing. It covers a wide range of topics in the field including the audit process, the legal environment of IT auditing, security and privacy, and much more. This textbook first examines the foundation of IT audit and control, discussing what IT auditing involves and the guidance provided by organizations in dealing with control and auditability issues. It then analyzes the process of audit and review, explores IT governance and control, and discusses the CobiT framework and steps that align IT decisions with business strategy. This volume examines project management processes that ensure that projects are controlled from inception through integration. It continues by addressing auditing IT acquisition and implementation, describing risks and controls as related to the life cycle of application systems. It highlights the purchase and installation of new systems, as well as change management. The next section examines the auditing of IT operations in both standalone and global environments, covering types of IT operation, issues related to specific platforms, risk and control assessment, and audit methods and support tools. The textbook concludes with a review of emerging issues, providing undergraduate and graduate students with a thorough overview of a topic critical to organizational security and integrity.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not good for the CISA exam.......2007-10-02

I bought this book as an additional material to study for the CISA exam. However it didn't help me with the exam at all. Furthermore, in an attempt to cover many things, it did not cover anything in detail. This book is just an endless recollection of bullet points. On top of that, it misses very sensitive topics like disaster recovery planning.

5 out of 5 stars Useful reference material.......2007-02-02

This book has some material relevant to the CISA examination based on the 2003 content areas, although it is not organized or focused as a CISA examination guide. If you are looking for CISA review material for the test, I would strongly suggest to stick with ISACA's combination of review manual and questions CD. I also searched everywhere for study aids for this grueling test and ended up using ISACA's expensive material, but it proved to be the best choice as I passed the Dec 2006 test.

However, as owner of a copy of this book, I assure you that this is an excellent reference of IT management, planning, implementation, risk assessment and control procedures for anyone in the IT business. Most of the material is still relevant as of 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a usable explanation of controls!.......2006-12-30

Audit is not the most exciting topic in the world, but this no fluff book really sets the standard. The care the authors took is obvious from the start, the table of contents is one of the most detailed I have ever seen, it allows the book to be used as a reference.

My favorite chapter was Quality Management, best job of making quality approachable I have seen to date. My least favorite was Project Management, it seemed to lack the application and lean to theory a bit.

I am not an auditor, but as an auditee, this book really helped me understand how they think. Recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Too thin.......2006-03-24

This is a huge book but spends no more then 1 page on any topic. In my opinion the authors only have financial audit experience and little understanding of IT controls. This book shows the failure of the 'integrated auditor' as the authors are tyring to be IT auditors with little IT experience. They touch on some very good points in a few instances and, in general, the book is decent. The authors do not know much outside of the CISA, IIA and financial based certifications as they seem to think that the ISSA (Information Systems Security Assoc.) is sponsored by ISC2/CISSP's (it is not). Overall, I have not been impressed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2005-12-13

Not having much experience in the IT audit field, this book was a great resource and was easy to understand.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is a GREAT return on your investment.......2000-06-19

Dr. Phillips has simplified a very complex concept. His step-by-step recommendations to conducting ROI studies are clear and concise. However, caveat emptor! He simplifies ROI so well that it seems relatively easy; but beware: there are great hurdles to leap when conducting ROI studies. While Phillips does cover some of the most serious obstacles one may face, such as getting management buy-in, isolating training effects, and handling soft data, conducting a ROI study is by no means a cake walk. For instance, ROI is more than a fifth level of evaluation after Kirkpatrick's four. It should be conducted at all levels of evaluation, which Phillips does suggest. Furthermore, ROI, or any evaluation effort for that matter, should not be viewed as merely a summative attempt; it should be conducted in an ongoing formative manner. Every project should have an evaluation component that parallels each task through the lifecycle of the project.

Additionally, in my opinion, Dr. Phillips' conservative approach to ROI is the greatest selling point. He accounts for error in all his measurements. For instance, when collecting self-report data, he has the respondent allocate a confidence weighting to their estimates. This confidence value weights the response while taking into account error. Furthermore, when calculating values for hard data or converting soft data (i.e., work habits and attitudes) to monetary benefits, he offers formulas that result in a range and suggests that the lowest, most conservative value is reported. Converting soft data to monetary benefits can be painstaking, but Phillips very eloquently addresses the conversion. By obtaining estimates from stakeholders (with a confidence weighting, of course), soft data can contribute to the overall calculation of return on investment. Therefore, your final conservative monetary return is not only based on hard data, but it is based on the less tangible elements of your organization as well.

If Phillips' approach to calculating ROI is too quantitative or laborious for your organization, you should consider calculating the return on expectations. Return on expectations can be assessed via a concept mapping (a multidimensional scaling approach) technique derived by Dr. Bill Trochium at Cornell University. Visit www.conceptsystems.com to review his technique. With Dr. Trochium's visual approach, you have stakeholders (i.e., stockholders, executive management, clients, employees, etc.) set expectations for your organization and then assess the alignment between set expectations and the actual performance of end groups. The result is a graphic pattern match that is easily interpreted and empowers decision-makers at all levels. Concept mapping has some of the same problems inherent in ROI, such as obtaining management buy-in. However, it is much easier to conduct than an ROI study, is based on a sound measurement techniques, and produces graphical results that, when considered collectively, illustrate the expected bang for your organization's buck

4 out of 5 stars A very useful guide to first timers in the area of ROI.......1998-10-20

The formula Phillips uses is a good one and he illustrates his model with many practical examples. There is a particularly good chapter on isolating the effects of training and this answers many of the objections raised to this sort of model where dollar amounts are calculated. The problem with the model is that it is mainly retrospective which means that you are closing the stable door after the horse has bolted in some cases. Having said that, it does deal with topics such as the collection of post program data in a thorough and clear way. If you are interested in intangible benefits of training then there is a chapter which deals with this topic. I would recommend that you also read the ASTD publication which Jack Phillips edited called 'Measuring Return On Investment'. Here there are 17 case studies which demonstrate how you can do ROI studies in the real world. Both these books are vital for anybody interested in the whole area of ROI on investment.

4 out of 5 stars some useful advice.......2006-10-01

The book came out in 2002 and was certainly written before the events of September 2001. Certainly seems germane nowadays. It tries to systematically study terrorism. Its causes and its tactics. Needless to say, when I turn to the index and look up hijacking, none of the book's instances refer to the possibility of kamikazes. This is how we can tell that it was written before September 2001.

The book is mostly concerned with counterterrorism methods, of course. Much of this very relevant. Practical advice that can be taken regardless of the ideologies of the terrorists. There are no real surprises here in terms of techniques. Though the book does have some insightful anecdotes about actual events.

5 out of 5 stars Highlighting.......2005-11-14

I looked inside the book and there is aliitle bit of highlighting where info was found to be of some importance.

5 out of 5 stars A book which should be read by all first responders..........2002-02-10

This book gives you the vital information you need to perform your duties as a first responder as well as showing security and safety managers what is expected of them also. The information is given in bite size chunks so as to aid in the retention of the material. The pictures and tables are very helpful in getting the key ideas across. The case studies of both the Oklahoma and first WTC attack are noteworthy for their detail. If you are responsible for the safety of persons or a first responder this is one book you should read and take to heart.

    Book Description

Emergency Response Planning outlines the essential roles of corporate and municipal managers and demonstrates the importance of their relationships with federal, state, and local government agencies as well as public and private community sectors. Author Paul Erickson, one of the leading experts in the field, focuses on proactively planning for emergencies, particularly in the recognition and advance coordination of response to incidents instead of simply implementing emergency measures.

The book is broken out into three sections. Section 1 outlines the overall scope of comprehensive emergency planning and discusses in detail the major elements that must be addressed in an Emergency Response Plan. Section 2 examines the types of hazards and risks faced by emergency response personnel, as well as the public, in typical emergencies, and provides specific recommendations regarding the immediate and long-term health and safety of emergency response personnel. Section 3 discusses a range of issues that must be given special attention in the development and implementation of any emergency response plan including: hazard and risk reduction, decontamination, data and information management, monitoring strategies and devices, terrorism, and the training of emergency response personnel.

    * Helps you to develop and implement an Emergency Response Plan
    * Provides specific recommendations regarding the immediate and long-term health and safety of emergency response personnel

3 out of 5 stars Solid Information, But Better Suited For Novices..........2004-12-11

Please note that this review is not intended as, nor should it be construed as, an assessment of Mr. McMahon's skills in and/or knowledge of the private investigation profession. I personally consider Mr. McMahon to be one of the premier investigators in the history of the profession. Certainly anyone who has earned the coveted distinction of Certified Legal Investigator (CLI) is an elite investigator regardless of any other contributions to the profession - and Mr. McMahon's contributions are many.

As a licensed private investigator and college instructor of private investigation courses, I think that Mr. Rory J. McMahon, CLI, FCI has written a solid and informative book. Please understand however, that this book would most likely be more beneficial to the aspiring or novice private investigator (for whom I would rate it 4 stars). In my humble opinion, an experienced investigator would realize less benefit from reading this title.

Mr. McMahon has compiled a great deal of information and has covered the vast majority of topics, but this book really lacks depth (i.e. actual techniques/procedures). If you're a novice looking for information (an overview) regarding the general aspects of private investigations, then this title might be worthy of your hard-earned money (although it is a little pricey for the casual reader). If you already have an understanding of the aforementioned information, then I would humbly suggest that you pass on this one.

If you're interested in information regarding the basic techniques/procedures of the private investigation profession, then I would highly recommend (emphasis added) "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Private Investigation" by Steven Kerry Brown (ISBN: 0028643992). Brown's work is also a must-have for anyone entering or attempting to enter the private investigation profession. Brown's text is a less than a third of the price of McMahon's title and contains much of the same information, while offering substantially more depth.

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

I hope you found this review helpful. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have this book!.......2002-01-16

I checked this book out of the library to use as a guide in setting up a PI agency. After one day I decided to just buy the book, despite the relatively high cost. Well worth the price. The sample forms and contracts are just what I was looking for. A great how-to book for people starting out in the industry!

3 out of 5 stars Good appetizer, but not a meaty dish.......2002-01-12

While this book projects a basic overview of the investigative profession, it lacks thorough treatment of techniques and issues. McMahon does deserve kudos for devoting a chapter to ethics. Unfortunately, like many other books in this category, the author indulges in a lot of superficial introductory information and glosses over sources. This book and Brandon Perron's, are probably the most well thought-out books covering this field to date...but please, we implore you authors, to cut out the fluff and drive home more substance: tried and proven techniques, detailed (and updated) source listings (including databases and public records info) and more practical business advice. A conditional buy.

5 out of 5 stars PI "how to".......2001-03-30

Mr McMahon was done a superb job in creating a practical handbook for PIs. His book should be the "manual" for those new to the field and those working towards a degree or certification related to Private Investigators. Although, the book is geared for the student or "newbie" PI, I found it to be an excellent refresher for experienced detectives. There are no war stories, this book is for educational purposes and has earned a spot in with my other reference manuals. Rory McMahon has obviously used his training and experience to create this manual. It is great to see a real PI giving something back to the industry.

        5 out of 5 stars The collector's item of the 20th Century!.......2007-07-30

This book is renowned as THE collector's item of the 20th Century. It's reputation precedes it due to the fact that when the authors' decided to publish an updated second edition, they felt it extremely necessary to include the now infamous Chapter 13, titled as "Enemy Attack And The UFO Potential."

This was confirmed in a highly revealing interview with one of the authors on "Sightings," a popular weekly television show hosted by Tim Rice and produced by Henry Winkler during the 1990s.

Inheriting Leonard Nimoy's "In Search Of" legacy, which aired during the 1970s, "Sightings" drew a tremendous audience during the 1990s as it explored and analyzed many different aspects of the paranormal and metaphysical genres.

When the "Sightings" crew focused their interest on the "Fire Officer's Guide to Disaster Control, Second Edition," it gave the book, its authors and its controversial Chapter 13 a level of public exposure that basically ripped the rug out from under any false notions that UFOs or alien craft were not real local, state or national issues.

I got my hands on a copy by calling Fire Engineering Books and Videos and pretending to be a firefighter. This was just before they caught on as to what was happening due to public interest generated by the "Sightings" episode.

        Anecdote 1:

An atheist/agnostic friend of mine had read Chapter 13 and her comments were as such: "I can't believe this! This is absolutely shocking to me! Anyone who is the least bit mentally imbalanced would surely commit suicide after reading this!"

What amazed her the most was its casual, professional, matter-of-fact approach - as if to say this happens everyday for firefighters.

        Anecdote 2:

My brother, who had just started his own trucking delivery service at the time, had actually crossed paths with the warehouse that stored and shipped copies of "Fire Officer's Guide to Disaster Control" for the publishing house. While making a delivery, he spotted the books stacked on pallets in the warehouse and, knowing a good opportunity when he sees one, decided to ask about the Second Edition.

The guys in the warehouse looked at each other and then back at my brother. They began to smile, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. "You're talking about that Chapter 13, right?" they asked. They already knew why he was inquiring. They told him that everyone always asks about that edition and that chapter.

4 out of 5 stars Are You Sure You Want THIS Job?.......2006-03-03

This book is a broad study of about all the large disasters a Fire Officer might need to understand something about. There are statistics, and some very good facts about the many subjects including myths and misconceptions. And UFOs. The chapters are well organized and the print is large enough for relaxed reading. The book is written in a casual, but professional style that keeps your interest.
I recommend it for any EMS, Fire, or civil defense/preparedness students or professionals. The only reason for a 4/5 rating is the broadness of each subject. Anyone in the business knows each chapter is worth a book all by itself. This work is a great accomplishment and my copy cost $55 in 1995. Its only slightly dated, HazMat is still chemicals, riots are bad, Terrorism is still violent. These authors did a great job!

4 out of 5 stars Defintely the MOST comprehensive disaster control book..........2003-05-25

How many other books of this type have a chapter concerning how to deal with a UFO crash? Seriously, Chapter 13 is entitled "Enemy Attack and UFO Potential." I've always been a skeptic concerning these types of things, but when a completely serious book like this has a chapter about dealing with UFOs (and one of the authors claims to have seen one), you just have to wonder...

          Book Description

Many excellent hardware and software products exist to protect our data communications sytems, but security threats dictate that they must be further enhanced. Many laws implemented during the past 15 years have provided law enforcement with more teeth to take a bite out of cyber crime, but there is still a need for individuals who know how to investigate computer network security incidents. Organizations demand experts with both investigative talents and a technical knowledge of how cyberspace really works. Cyber Crime Investigator's Field Guide, Second Edition provides the investigative framework that needs to be followed, along with information about how cyberspace works and the tools that reveal the who, what, when, where, why, and how in the investigation of cyber crime. This volume offers a valuable Q&A by subject area, an extensive overview of recommended reference materials, and a detailed case study. Appendices highlight attack signatures, UNIX/Linux commands, Cisco PIX commands, port numbers targeted by trojan horses, and more.

5 out of 5 stars An Extremely Practical No-Nonsense Hard Hitting CF Book!.......2006-07-12

I have over 100 books in my library dealing with information security, communication systems design, criminal investigations, penetration testing (hacking), and computer crime investigation (cyber forensics) but this book leads the pack. I've actually purchased several for my friends who work in cyber forensics at the local/state/federal levels in law enforcement and those who work in corporate America. This book is soooo good because it covers what REALLY happens out in the field during a computer crime investigation (including entire chapters on what to bring, how to plan, who to work with, etc). Also included are entire chapters dedicated to various tools and step by step instructions on how to use them. I've done my research and Bruce Middleton (the author) has been in the computer crime field for decades working forensics investigations before it was even called forensics. He began is investigative work with computers back in the early 70's with NSA and DoD. Today he is still an outstanding writer, speaker and investigator in the forensics world, working with corporations, government agencies, law enforcement, and our military. This book is hard hitting and really tells it like it is. Great for both novices and those with experience.
