5 out of 5 stars The Primer for Digital/Information Forensics.......2003-08-05

Stephenson's book is the starting place for law enforcement and technical people who wish to move into the digital/information forensics field. The book is an easy read and leads you in proper case handling and the basics of forensic investigations. When I began investigating cyber-crime in the private sector, this was my starting point.

4 out of 5 stars A qualified endorsement.......2001-07-13

Stephenson's book does an excellent job of covering the technical details of an investigation without becoming impenetrable. The presentation follows a logical sequence. In sum, I am very impressed with the work.

Potential readers should be aware that the text is written from the perspective of a corporate investigator/consultant. It does an excellent job of explaining the pitfalls of this role. Stephenson provides personal examples of dealing with the decisions made by corporate bureacracy and law enforcement that effect the work of a private security consultant. He is careful to cite the reasons for such decisions in a manner that is respectful of the process used by the decision makers; this really helps novice investigators and students maintain perspective while internalizing the results of the decisions.

The book does not cover legal aspects of the investigation beyond basic evidence preservation and suggestions on when to get the lawyers involved. This is entirely expected from a corporate investigator rather than a law enforcement investigator; I respect an expert who knows when his expertise ends.

That being said, take the initial sweeping comments on hackers with a grain of salt. They detract from an otherwise solid book.

The greatest strength of the book is the frequent reminder that real-world investigation can be superior to the technical investigation and how the two aid each other.

This book would provide an excellent bridge between an advanced investigations text (interviewing, deception detection, standard investigation, etc.) and one of the more technical computer crime forensics books.

It is not a bench manual nor an investigations cookbook. Nor is it a completely non-technical writer's understanding of a computer investigation.

2 out of 5 stars some interesting stuff, but..........2006-08-10

there's some interesting stuff in here, particularly in the area of computer forensics. but the book jumps all over the place. it starts with an good story of a real forensic raid (i beleive just the names were changed to protect the innocent), but abruptly switches to entirely unrelated situations. it eventually drops the storyline altogether, leaving you wondering how it ended and what the aftermath was.

5 out of 5 stars Crumbs left behind.......2005-11-12

This book is fascinating. The style of writing allows you to go inside the minds of corporate fraud offenders. In order to do the crime it fosters accomplices along the way. The amazing thread is that the criminals have their scheme planned out but they forget one critical element, there's always someone that can find the trail that's left behind. Computer fingerprints. I thought that the book was eloquently written and I walked away with a clear understanding of corporate criminal fraud and what criminals will do for greed.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!.......2005-06-13

This book was recommended to me by a coworker when I was working at one of the big four in the area of data mining. I was at first skeptical of the depth of its IT specifics but quickly realized that between the gripping lines of adventure the author skillfully embedded vital knowledge that's critical for anyone who wants to get the insight of corporate systems, IT infrastructures, and how they work together. In the format for a novel, the author took me on an exciting and informative ride in the world of corporate forensic investigation.

    1 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2005-03-03

boring and not in depth. if you are looking for an adventure, this is not the book for you.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting reading.......2004-11-02

Security literature is filled with titles on procedures, processes, and details of performing forensic investigations. Despite its title, this book is not another one. Equal parts autobiography, mystery, biography, and action thriller, the book is an overview of the cases and characters with which the author, a forensic investigator at Deloitte and Touche, has been involved.

In chapter after chapter, the reader receives a high-level view of the tools and technologies used in forensic investigations, then learns the inner workings of specific corporate frauds. These cases range from garden-variety frauds to cybercrime.

One fascinating chapter explores the disposition of a bank account dormant since the Holocaust and how forensic investigators cracked the case 60 years after the fact. It describes how a large group of investigators went to Switzerland to determine the beneficiaries of dormant World War II-era Swiss bank accounts. The chapter details methodology used to retrieve documents and to discover what was hidden and who was entitled to it.

Geared for management-level readers without much technical background, the book spares the reader byte-by-byte details on forensic evidence gathering and handling. Story after story gives readers a very accessible account of how investigators detected fraud, misuse, and a wide range of other corporate criminality. With its real-life drama, the book is both an enjoyable and instructive read.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for the high-tech security professional.......2001-03-25

This book is a must read for the high-technology security professional. The author's insights and practice tips alone are worth the price of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Bridging the gap between law enforcement and companies.......2000-01-03

Rosenblatt has an unusually good understanding of the problems faced by law enforcement when dealing with companies who want the crook jailed but don't have time for support work on the case. He also understands corporate perspectives when the case makes the headlines and really becomes a mess for PR.

This book clearly outlines the many issues related to getting computer-based evidence and making sure that search warrants are well written. It is a bit dated but very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Authoritative, well written, and a real eye-opener........1999-09-12

Rosenblatt has put together a great source of information along with plenty of practical tips and techniques for both investigators and prosecutors. I found the sections on legal technicalities and practices especially good. I've recommended the book to everyone I know who remotely has anything to do with computer or high technology crime. A must read for the cop of the 21st century!

A strong system of defenses will save your systems from falling victim to published and otherwise uninventive attacks, but even the most heavily defended system can be cracked under the right conditions. Incident Response aims to teach you how to determine when an attack has occurred or is underway--they're often hard to spot--and show you what to do about it. Authors Kevin Mandia and Chris Prosise favor a tools- and procedures-centric approach to the subject, thereby distinguishing this book from others that catalog particular attacks and methods for dealing with each one. The approach is more generic, and therefore better suited to dealing with newly emerging attack techniques.

Anti-attack procedures are presented with the goal of identifying, apprehending, and successfully prosecuting attackers. The advice on carefully preserving volatile information, such as the list of processes active at the time of an attack, is easy to follow. The book is quick to endorse tools, the functionalities of which are described so as to inspire creative applications. Information on bad-guy behavior is top quality as well, giving readers knowledge of how to interpret logs and other observed phenomena. Mandia and Prosise don't--and can't--offer a foolproof guide to catching crackers in the act, but they do offer a great "best practices" guide to active surveillance. --David Wall

Topics covered: Monitoring computer systems for evidence of malicious activity, and reacting to such activity when it's detected. With coverage of Windows and Unix systems as well as non-platform-specific resources like Web services and routers, the book covers the fundamentals of incident response, processes for gathering evidence of an attack, and tools for making forensic work easier.

3 out of 5 stars Ok book but File System Forensic is better.......2006-05-24

I liked this book, but it is scattered in its topics. A lot of the information can be found online, and the tools aren't what we use on a daily basis. I'm not sure if any of them are commercial tools in this book.

I liked File System Forensics by Brian Carrier better. Even though it had a smaller area to cover it provided a better introduction to the area and I could see how it could be used in a class better. Still, this book does have a lot of good content and makes a nice addition.

5 out of 5 stars Best incidence reponse book out.......2005-03-04

This is no doubt the best incidence reponse book out. I highly recommend this for anyone either in the field, learning to get into the field, or running a small to medium sized company without a team of experts. My entire network admin team uses this as a reference at the side of their desk.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent basic reference.......2004-05-15

I read the book in about three days and found it to be a good primer for one leaning towards computer forensics. While some of the technology and tools described in the book will undoubtedly change within the next few months, a lot of the basic principles will remain pertinent for a long time to come. I heartily recommend this book for anyone with more than just a casual interest in Computer Security.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best Computer Forensics Primer Out There (1/04).......2004-01-22

As an attorney and a formally-trained computer forensics examiner and instructor who has been tilling the fields of digital evidence for some time, I'm always on the prowl for the next great computer forensics tool or text that's going to help me find the next smoking gun...or at least be confident I haven't overlooked it. I've built a substantial library of books and articles on computer forensics, some very good and some a complete waste of money. But, this book is the best of the best.

From its step-by-step detail of the forensic process to its copious and helpful illustrations and screen shots to its unvarnished discussion of the tools in the marketplace, the second edition of Incident Response and Computer Forensics is, for my money, the most valuable resource any computer forensic examiner could have on their shelf. Many of the techniques and shortcuts detailed are "trade secrets" in that I've never seen them described in print. Unlike other forensic guides that assume the reader owns a costly forensic software suite, this book fairly splits its emphasis between Linux tools, shareware and the best software packages. That means the reader can begin the learning process at once, without investing anything more than their time and interest.

Another strength is that the book neither presupposes a too-high level of knowledge or experience nor dumbs down its content such that an expert wouldn't derive any value. There's something here for everyone who cares about computer forensics, from the neophyte to the grizzled veteran. When I paid $50.00 for this tome at a big box bookstore, I worried I was paying too much. Now, I'd think it cheap at twice the price.

As another reviewer pointed out, it doesn't devote a chapter to the law, but that is not to say that legal considerations are ignored. To the contrary, I think the authors do an excellent job of giving a useful "heads-up" where needed and not moving out of their depth.

I don't know these guys, but I'd sure like to shake their hands for a job well done! Thanks.

Investigating Computer Crime presents practical methods for gathering electronic evidence and dealing with crimes involving computers. Based on material gathered from hundreds of investigators all over the world, it contains an incredible amount of practical, directly applicable information. It follows a step-by-step approach to the investigation, seizure, and evaluation of computer evidence. The material in the book has been used at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the Canadian Police College for teaching computer classes in white collar crime and sex crime investigations and by U.S. Army Intelligence in cooperation with NATO in Europe. It has also been used to teach a one-week course in computer crime investigation to agents from the IRS, Secret Service, and state and local agencies. Computers reach into every aspect of our lives today, and as their use grows, so does the possibility of their abuse. This book was published in 1996, however, the information seems like it comes from 1986. It is full of stereotypes and hacker rumors that any REAL hacker would laugh at. It might be good if you want the info on search warrants, but computer hardware and software has changed so much that most of this book is irrelevant today.

3 out of 5 stars Good for absolute beginners or field officers.......1997-02-12

Well illustrated but contains very basic information. Good for field officers that may seize a computer but any information beyond basic seizure techniques is lacking. Not a book for an experienced computer investigator

          Book Description

The rapid growth and expansion of computer crime has created a new peril. With this factor in mind, this book has been designed to provide a fundamental investigative foundation for law enforcement and security managers, moving through the basic phases of a computer crime investigation. Topics include: solvability factors; retail computer security; intelligence gathering; the investigative process; establishing the corpus delicti; preserving evidence; determining the evidence, weak points and responsible parties; and deciding on a course of action. "Ideas for Discussion" follow each chapter, providing material for in-depth exploration of the topics presented. The appendix contains a wealth of knowledge on information warfare, extremists, and other threats from "cyberspace." This text will be a valuable resource for law enforcement personnel, security professionals, college-level students of security, and business establishments.

If you are to get 25 Titles on the subject, this book shouldn't be one of them.

I've read many books about Computer Crime (almost every book) and this one is the worst among them.

It has nothing to do with this book being published @ 1998, because (Computer Crime: A Crimefighter's Handbook) was published @ 1995 and it is much better.
