I thought this book was very useful in the study of Criminal Law at the undergraduate level. I enjoyed the author's selection of cases and thought that they were edited well so that they remained readable.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2001-10-25

As one of Professor Samaha's students, I found that using this particular text in corrolation with his lectures was extremely benefical in learning the basics of criminal law. His personal insight on the case studies undoubtedly aided in understanding the material, but I suspect that the text would not have stuck me as such an outstanding book had Professor Samaha not been there to add additional information on each aspect of his work. However, even without the personal commentary, the text is still a very clear and concise resource that would be excellent for an introductory course on criminal law.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment: I'm dumping this for another title.......2001-03-14

The text itself is barely adequate for an undergraduate level class (I wouldn't consider it for graduate study). At first I was excited by the addition of the "case method" technique for presenting criminal theory, but after struggling with the poorly edited cases I find myself actually skipping them.

The explanations and examples used in this book do meet minimal standards, but don't expect much more than that. It's almost as if the author were too busy with other projects to actually put together a quality product.

To make matters worse the support material provided to professors is horrible. I'm not normally a big "test bank" type of instructor, but one of the selling points to this book was the extensive library of material available. Sadly, this is once again proof that quantity does not always equal quality.

The test bank is full of very poorly worded questions. What's worse is that many of the questions have answers which contradict the book. In other words, the test key and the book do not agree....END

3 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things..........2006-08-31

Good:
-Good coverage of main topics (DHCP, DSN, AD).
-Practical perspective, examples and troubleshooting.
-A lot of information that eventually could be useful.

Bad:
-Fisically the book is too big, difficult to hold, this becomes a problem. It should be divided in two parts, the important topics and the rarely used information.
-Minasi exposition is not clear. He tries so hard to entertain the reader, and his writing lacks structure. He jumps to specific topics that extend many pages, use too many words to express simple things. Sometimes is really exasperating: "come on man, GET TO THE POINT!, don't waste my time".
-Have a lot of typos, i think because is based in the prior edition.

I think the book is too tangled to be useful for begginers, and too disperse to be helpful for experts. No doubt Minasi has profound knowledge of the product and writing skills, but needs STRUCTURE and SOBRIETY.

I rate the book three stars just because knowing nothing i made it settting a windows network with DSN,DHCP,Active directory,VPN and Terminal services. The book contains the information but the reader, not the author, is who organize it.

The Greatest Manhunt in American History

For 12 days after his brazen assassination of Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth was at large, and in Manhunt, historian James L. Swanson tells the vivid, fully documented tale of his escape and the wild, massive pursuit. Get a taste of the daily drama from this timeline of the desperate search.

April 14, 1865 Around noon, Booth learns that Lincoln is coming to Ford's Theatre that night. He has eight hours to prepare his plan.
10:15 pm: Booth shoots the president, leaps to the stage, and escapes on a waiting horse.
Secretary of War Edwin Stanton orders the manhunt to begin.
April 15 About 4:00 am: Booth seeks treatment for a broken leg at Dr. Samuel Mudd's farm near Beantown, Maryland. Cavalry patrol heads south toward Mudd farm.
Confederate operative Thomas Jones hides Booth in a remote pine thicket for five days, frustrating the manhunters.
April 19 Tens of thousands watch the procession to the U.S. Capitol, where President Lincoln lies in state. Wild rumors and stories of false sightings of Booth spread.
April 20 Stanton offers a $100,000 reward for the assassins, and threatens death to any citizen who helps them.
After hiding Booth in Maryland, Jones puts him in a rowboat on the Potomac River, bound for Virginia. More than a thousand manhunters are still searching in Maryland. In the dark, Booth rows the wrong way and first ends up back in Maryland.
April 20-24 Booth lands in the northern neck of Virginia, and Confederate agents and sympathizers guide him to Port Conway, Virginia.
April 24 Booth befriends three Confederate soldiers who help him cross the Rappahannock River to Port Royal and then guide him further southwest to the Garrett farm.
Union troops in Washington receive a report of a Booth sighting. They board a U.S. Navy tug and steam south, right past Booth's hideout at the Garrett farm.
April 25 The 16th New York Calvary, realizing their error, turns around and surrounds the Garrett farm after midnight that night.
April 26 When Booth refuses to surrender, troops set the barn on fire, and Boston Corbett shoots the assassin. Booth dies a few hours later, at sunrise.
April 26-27 Booth's body is brought back to Washington, where it is autopsied, photographed, and buried in a secret grave.

Book Description

The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, led Union cavalry and detectives on a wild twelve-day chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness.

James L. Swanson's Manhunt is a fascinating tale of murder, intrigue, and betrayal. A gripping hour-by-hour account told through the eyes of the hunted and the hunters, this is history as you've never read it before.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great read... i was there!!.......2007-09-29

I have not read many books lately and have just started to get back to it. Manhunt was the latest book I read and it was AMAZING!! The vivid descriptions put you everywhere John W Booth and his cohorts are and makes for a fascinating depiction of history.

5 out of 5 stars Brings history to life..........2007-09-14

I enjoy nonfiction books that read like novels, and James L. Swanson's Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer provides a dose of history in an enjoyable format.

Manhunt didn't include much information about the assassination that I didn't already know. But I did learn quite a bit about the 12-day pursuit of John Wilkes Booth and the hunt for his conspirators, as well as some other assassination trivia. It was especially interesting in that my husband and I often travel this same path through Maryland and Virginia when driving south. We pass right by the historic marker near the Garrett house barn (where Booth was captured and killed), although we've never stopped to see the actual location.

Swanson does a commendable job of bringing the complex Booth to life. The author describes him as "impossibly vain, preening, emotionally flamboyant, possessed of raw talent and splendid elan." Yet, this handsome and charismatic actor was willing to sacrifice everything for "his cause." After the assassination, he was stunned and enraged to discover that his acts not only met with outrage, but also, made Lincoln a martyr. I was surprised to learn that on April 16, 1865, CSA Lt. General R. S. Ewell sent Secretary of War Stanton a letter that was cosigned by 16 other Confederate generals. In the letter, Ewell wrote of their "unqualified abhorrence and indignation" at Lincoln's killing. He claimed that they were shocked by this appalling crime and that Southern men "are not assassins" nor their "allies."

Manhunt has a good number of pictures, drawings, maps and photographs related to the assassination. He also includes an excellent Epilogue where he tells the "story after the story." Swanson also provides a poignant description of the events of that time. When Lincoln died at the Peterson house, a "crude, improvised coffin" was brought to transport his body back to the White House. The people in the street were upset. "The box looked like a shipping crate, not a proper coffin for a head of state. Lincoln would not have minded. He was always a man of simple tastes. This was the plain, roughly hewn coffin of a rail-splitter."

After reading Manhunt, I intend on reading an earlier work that Swanson co-wrote called Lincoln's Assassins: Their Trail and Execution.

5 out of 5 stars What a book..........2007-09-04

I bought this book for a teachers gift, he loves Lincoln and that whole period of our country's life. He said the book is one of the best he's ever read on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Well written, a quick read........2007-09-03

As a person who's read quite a bit on Lincoln and his assination, I figured I should finally get around to this text. I've been telling people for years that Dr. Samuel Mudd's family lobbied for years to get Mudd's name cleared--that he was simply a physician treating a patient with a broken leg. A colleague of mine suggested that this book denies that. It does, indeed.

I read a lot but am a slower reader than I'd like. So I like a book (1) that doesn't have microscopic print and (2) keeps me interested. This qualified on both counts. I don't mean it was large print, like a children's book. But it didn't have so much detail that I could maybe win a trivia contest but be none the wiser.

In fact, one item that I liked most was that Thomas Jones apparently kept Booth and his accomplice, Davey Herold, in a pine thicket for something like four days and five nights. Jones was freed of any responsibility for harboring perhaps the most wanted man in the US for those 12 days, but told the truth some years later. (When he was selling a book admitting to that, he was apparently attacked by some Union veterans!)

Among the things I liked too about the book was the admission by the author that Lincoln was not particularly popular at the time of his assination. Indeed, Booth was discouraged after the assasination that he'd created a martyr there there might not have been one.

Another thing I liked about the structure of the book is that the author ended with a kind of "where are they now," or what happened to the actors in the "drama." That's where I learned of the Jones story, for example.

What I didn't like about the book was the speculation the author did on what was going on in Booth's mind while he was in the Garret barn where he was eventually shot. I'm conscious of that ever since a good friend and former boss and I talked about a book years ago in which he accused I think it was Halberstram of doing that. "How could he know was was going on in [so-and-so]'s mind?" he asked. Of course he can guess, but then such speculation needed to be stated as such.

I must confess too that I almost downgraded the review by one star too because of what I saw in the book's acknowledgements. You see, Swanson thanked is friends "at the Heritage Foundation." What's the matter with that? Well, Heritage is extremely ideological. (I know, for, among other reasons, I have a distant cousin who works there.) How would one have felt after reading such a book if the author had said, "Many thanks to all my buddies at the Communist Party." It might make you want to find another more credible book because that party tends to be ideological. Heritage may be the other side of the political spectrum but is no less ideological, so it made me wonder about the author's motives and objectivity. But, despite Heritage, I found the book worth reading and, yes, difficult to put down. So, over and above the Booth speculation, I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing....Engaging...........2007-08-12

A thrilling page-turner! Even though the ending is known to all you'll find this book keeps you more than a little interested and at the edge of your seat. I found myself having to put the book down to grieve for Lincoln's death, but at the same time unable to put the book down because it's was so captivating, all the while savoring each page!

4 out of 5 stars Back for More.......2000-10-19

I read most of this book as an undergraduate at Middlebury College and was thoroughly impressed to the point that I did not sell it at graduation like most of my textbooks. I took it with me after college and lent it out to so many people, from boarding school directors, to my grandmother, to high school students, that it finally fell from my grasp. I am on Amazon right now to order another copy. If you are looking for a book that details more than just the supporting and opposing views on issues from Physician Assisted Suicide to Public Speech codes, this is a buy for you. Unlike other ethics books that provide only two sides on each issue, MacDonald's collection includes many opinions that fall into a grey area, from both expected and unexpected sources. I found this book to be excellenct for academic use but also would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to delve a bit deeper into the issues that constanly arise in the media.

      Book Description

Since it appeared in 1971, John Rawls's A Theory of Justice has become a classic. The author has now revised the original edition to clear up a number of difficulties he and others have found in the original book.

Rawls aims to express an essential part of the common core of the democratic tradition--justice as fairness--and to provide an alternative to utilitarianism, which had dominated the Anglo-Saxon tradition of political thought since the nineteenth century. Rawls substitutes the ideal of the social contract as a more satisfactory account of the basic rights and liberties of citizens as free and equal persons. "Each person," writes Rawls, "possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override." Advancing the ideas of Rousseau, Kant, Emerson, and Lincoln, Rawls's theory is as powerful today as it was when first published.

This is not for me (also I'm lawyer), is for my daughter who study philosophy at University of Buenos Aires and will learn the book when we arrive home next Jan 22.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible and important development in liberal thought.......2006-10-14

A Theory of Justice is surprisingly accessible, even to those of us without extensive training in philosophy. Rawls briefly examines two of the most influential Western liberal philosophers (Locke and Mill), and then proceeds to construct his own Theory which builds on Locke and Mill while solving for some of the deficiences in each.

As Rawls admitted, the gist of his Theory can be gleaned from the first part of the book, though the book reads easily enough that one should be able to get through the whole thing fairly quickly.

I highly recommend this book to those who think of philosophy as convoluted jargon written long ago by men in powdered wigs and robes, as well as to those who are unsure of the philosophical basis for much modern liberal political thought. A remarkably accessible and important development in liberal thought.

1 out of 5 stars The Impossible Attempt of Reconciling the Ideal with the Realistic.......2006-09-07

The amount of praise given to this work does not surprise me given that there is a widespread, yet subtle, socialist movement in America as well as in Europe. Despite this, the book is a failed attempt at reconciling the ideal with reality. Rawls commits one of the many age-old flaws of collectivism, attempting to force morality on immoral beings. Rawls' entire work is fundamentally flawed in that the hypothetical situation from which the entire theory relies, selectively allows certain knowledge, assumptions, etc. while conveniently eliminating others. For instance, empirical evidence that shows capitalism outperforms other economic systems cannot be known in the original position. This is profound when one considers that we live in a hostile world that requires nations to invest in security of which economic power is imperative. Thus, capitalism may be a necessary injustice in order to safeguard liberal democracy. If we compare the human condition prior to capitalism, one can see that perhaps a collectivist system that may contribute to capitalism's downfall is immoral, if it leads us back in this direction. Consequentalism perhaps? Despite this, the people in the original position cannot have this knowledge. Therefore, information that is direly relevant to the construction of a social system in a hostile world cannot be used in determining its structure. Somehow though, the people do understand the important of the right to vote, equality, etc. This is absurd and impractical. Rationale beings need to analyze as much information as is available and pertinent to any decisions they make. Rawls continuously attempts to explain his "tweaks" as rationale but it is obvious that they are all implemented in order to discount human nature and proceed in theoretical terms. On a side note, Rawls' first principle calls for the right to vote, what would his state do if citizens began to vote for a more capitalistic system that defied his "justice"? Iron fist? Nevertheless, it is quite obvious what Rawls is attempting here. In a hypothetical situation where we all have to fear being born without intelligence, strength, status etc. we will take the safe route and ensure ourselves the highest index of goods. This may be true, or it may not (human nature seems to embrace risk taking) however this situation is irrelevant because of its exclusion of relevant information. Hobbes for instance accepted human nature and the potential for a wide array of circumstances in his hypothetical Natural Condition. While Rawls may have some strong arguments in declaring that his two principles are the epitome absolute justice, this does not mean they are practical in a hostile world. Essentially, what Rawls is saying is that none of us deserved to be born intelligent, responsible, hard working, but that we were simply lucky in the natural lottery. Because of this arbitrary distribution, he believes that we all must compensate for those unfortunate souls that were born unintelligent, lazy, and perhaps even immoral! I'd admonish Rawls not to attempt applying his insane reasoning to the criminal justice system (Poor, unfortunate murderer). If Rawls believes that the laziest, dumbest, and most immoral person still deserves a living wage despite not working, he has contradicted himself in that this justifies slavery, forcing individuals to work for other individuals without compensation. This simply cannot be justice as "fairness". Nevertheless, I'd recommend it to all free market advocates simply to strengthen their positions. As a warning however, be prepared for a work that lacks brevity, organization, coherence, and most importantly, reality.

      5 out of 5 stars Comic reviews.......2006-03-27

I suppose one of the great attributes of the internet is that it allows the juxtaposition of the good, the bad and the ugly. Where else could one find reviews of one of the twentieth century's towering works that variously describe it as a recipe for a police state, an incitement to theft, or as written by someone with no understanding of philosophy (my personal favourite - thanks Adrian!)

      5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-03-21

Rawls clearly sucks in great chunks of political thought - Kantianism, Utilitarianism, free market capitalism, utopian socialism, the Enlightenment idea of human progress in this capacious work. At the crux of his thought is the difference principle - the notion that inequalities can only be justified if they benefit the least well off.

Whatever you make of his theory, it can't be ignored. Anyone even remotely interested in 20th Century Liberal thought must consult A Theory of Justice, as it is the precursor to so much that has been written in the last 35 years. Check out any political journal and there will still be several articles anually which assess some part of Rawls' legacy.

In the 1970s, when Rawls' book came out, many people thought he had cracked liberal thought. Since then OPEC crises, divisions over the welfare state, the problem of benefit traps, pension funding shortfalls and a whole menangerie of other problems have beset contemporary liberalism. But to go back to a brave, well throught out articulation of one great thinker's view of liberal equality, seek out Rawls.

5 out of 5 stars Second Volume Of One Of DC's Greatest Epics.......2007-09-30

Reprinting #s 5-8 of the 12-issue Justice limited series, plus bonus pages featuring brief synopses of some of the characters (written as if by Batman himself) and awesome, full-page artworks of various characters (some color, some black and white), Justice Volume II continues one of the most epic of all Justice League tales.

Quasi-Elseworlds in nature (that is, it doesn't concern itself with lining up precisely with DCU continuity, but it doesn't go as radical as most Elseworlds projects, such as having Superman having landed in the Soviet Union rather than Kansas (Superman: Red Son (Elseworlds)) or placing Batman in 19th-century London rather than Gotham (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (Elseworlds)) The previous volume (spoiler alert...) ended with many of the DCU's biggest guns in a dire situation, and with the villains led by Lex Luthor aparantly well on their way to succeeding both in their effort to crush all their main foes in one series of strikes, and in their seemingly benevolent plans for the world's future. Here, although the picture Luthor and allies are painting continues to be an attractive one, you begin to get a sense of the potential for abuse by those who would be left holding the reins of power in this new world order. In keeping with the series's "not cut-and-dried or black-and-white" theme, this is subtle, and it's left to interpretation whether even the villains are even conciously aware of all this. Also, the question of who was behind the various supervillains's recurring nightmares of global annihilation, and the question of whether there's another party pulling their strings, begins to dawn.

In Volume 1, the villains - Luthor, Bizarro, Grodd, and a ton of others - took center stage much of the time, and here it's a larger array of heroes entering the fray. Some in a major role, others in the back, in supporting roles, we see characters like Zatanna, Metamorpho, Captain Marvel and the Metal Men taking active roles. All the characters here are DC classics, in that they've been around for decades, and the series is bringing in most of the significant characters who were active before, say, the mid-to-late 80s, including some who are seldom seen nowadays. (To digress a bit, I'd really love to see the Ross/Krueger/Braithwaite team do another big epic where the relatively recent additions to DC's pantheon: guys and girls like Bane, Monolith, Stargirl, the current Mr. Terrific, the Cassandra Cain version of Batgirl, the Hate Furnace {now There's a modern creation who's seriously under-used}, Breach, maybe even Doomsday, those kind of characters, play big roles. In addition to players like Superman and Batman, not instead of.) If you've got some favorite characters, or favorite incarnations of characters, from a long way back, you've got a pretty good chance of seeing some of them in Justice.

As with the first one, the art is phenomenal, the writing excellent, the story riveting, and the list of characters irresistable. And if you look up 'epic' in the dictionary, they might as well just put a picture of one of the Justice volumes in there. The Justice saga may not tie directly in with continuity, but it's essential reading for the DC fan. Highest rating.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good story.......2007-09-07

Great story, Great concept. Incredible art. Particularly liked the direction taken for Aquaman.

      5 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations.......2007-06-20

I am not embarrassed in the least to acknowledge that I did not give Justice: Volume I a rave review. I enjoyed it, but I frankly claimed it was more of the same and didn't break any new ground in terms of originality.

Let me be the first to admit that Justice: Volume II more than exceeded my expectations. Everything that I didn't like about the first volume has evaporated with the second. In this volume, we finally see the heroes being treated as interestingly as the villains, and we finally get to see them taking some action and proving why they are CONSIDERED heroes in the first place. And best of all? We finally get to see the heroes interact in this volume.

And interact they do! It's obvious Alex Ross, one of the plotters and cover artist and general superstar, has an affinity for the silver age mythos of the DC Universe, and he's doing his best to intersperse them throughout this entire storyline. We've got some wonderful dialogue between characters we love to see talking with each other, though we normally wouldn't think of them being in the same room. And, what really rocked me hard, Aquaman is presented as a man who actually COULD be a king of seventy-five percent of the earth.

Okay, so this volume is far and away better than the first, which makes total sense considering it's the second installment of a three-volume storyline. The art is very attractive, the plot is interesting, the dialogue is entertaining, but if you're a DC Geek like me, the sheer number of characters intermingling is a joy.

      5 out of 5 stars Vol. 2 - better than Vol.1!.......2007-05-25

I'm a huge fan of Alex Ross, but I felt the illustrations in Volume 1 were somewhat - I don't have another term for it - muddied. Volume 2 is back to what I expect when I see an Alex Ross book: amazing depictions of old friends (I've been reading comics just about since the beginning of the Silver Age). Volume 2 has all the visual twists, surprises, and delights I had expected from the beginning.

Sigh. Now he's just made waiting for Vol. 3 all that more painful!
