Great step by step.......2007-08-31
This book is an amazing beginner book. Within the first few lessons you have an understanding of how to use maya and the Projects are excellent.
I have learnt so much from this book.
Follow it page for page and you will be able to master Maya
Helpful Book.......2007-08-10
This book is well structured and easy to use for reference. It is set at a good level for beginning learning. If you want a book that goes more in depth about more advanced things in Maya, this might not be for you. This book contains a good foundation for learning, but does not go in depth when it comes to critical processes such as skin weights.
An Excellent Way to Learn Maya.......2007-08-07
I purchased this book recently for a 3D animation class I am taking at school, and I have found it to be an excellent way to learn Maya. Although this book is for Maya version 8, I use version 8.5 and have noticed only very minor differences (nothing to worry about).
This book is in full color, which makes the screenshots easy to follow. The introduction starts out with a general overview of all aspects of Maya, which helped me to understand better how things worked together from the very beginning. Each of the five major projects in the book focus on reproducing elements from Sony Picture's CG movie Open Season, as shown on the book cover. These projects are completely new from the Maya 7 version of this book. It was kind of cool to create things that were used in a real movie.
I felt the learning curve was pretty well thought out. The writers of the book realize how complex the Maya software is, and they give you instructions on how to perform certain tasks several times before expecting you to remember on your own. The book also comes with a supplementary DVD which contains lots of extras, including the completed Maya files from every chapter in the book, just in case you get stuck or want to skip ahead.
This book is an excellent learning tool for someone new to Maya, or perhaps an intermediate user who wants to more fully understand how to use the software.
for beginner.......2007-07-23

greatest.......2007-10-01
I'm begginer but the book has step by step about the software.
A bible, really... Really great!
Detailed but under-illustrated.......2007-09-17
This is an excellent and highly detailed reference for the program 3ds Max 9. As near as I can tell it mentioned every button and command that 3ds Max has available. My main criticism is that it is highly under-illustrated. While every function and button is mentioned, as a beginner to 3ds Max, I found that I often could not find the command being referred to in the text, whereas a screen shot would have quickly, and clearly shown what I should look for. In addition, since 3ds Max is such a sophisticated and detailed program which is great, it is often not readily apparent how all the various settings and parameters that can be entered for a given effect should be used. This book mentions most, if not all of the parameters, but examples as to how they are used in an actual project would have been good. There are short tutorials on the main features of the program, but these are generally restricted to singe effects. This book is probably for a more advanced user who is familiar with all the commands and knows how to use them to create a 3d scene, but would like a more detailed explanation of various functions in 3ds Max. Definitely well written though, and the DVD with the material and software described in the examples is great.
Done it again!.......2007-08-04
I've had two of these books over the years. They are fantastic reference to have.
Excellent.......2007-07-17
Perfect for beginners...after the opening tutorial, step-by-step walkthrough to understanding all aspects of the program. Would reccomend to anyone!
OOPS missing 1059-1154.......2007-06-24
This is a good book, Wiley Publishing messed things up though. It is missing over a 100 pages. As soon as I got it I searched for the chapters on MaxScript and detected the omission. The book itself is great; but the publishers omission is not acceptable. I have informed Amazon about this and hopefully they will recover the missing chapters. The DVD does have a complete version of the book which is very helpful in the interim.

Very unhappy with my purchase.......2006-08-28
The information on the web site was not very informative and trying to get to the check out was a hassel. What really is pathetic was the shipping. Either pay a ridiculus amount to get the item here or wait 2 weeks and not pay for shipping. Well in no real hurry I choose not to pay for shipping. The item was damaged and not packed very well. It was taped shut to keep the information and item together. I am still missing the cover and parts of the first chapter.

Mastering Autodeak Revit Building.......2007-02-14
When you do a search for Revit 8.0 this book comes up as a suggestion, but beware. It is only for 8.1 because the files only work in 8.1. That makes the book totally useless to Revit 8.0 users.
Good Transaction.......2007-01-04
Good transaction, exactly what was advertised. No pain, just smooth deal. No hesitation
Very Good.......2006-11-15
This book does a good job of teaching you how to do specific things in Revit. However, some of the techniques it teaches are a little too specific to the Sample Files that it uses to teach the techniques. But still does a very good job.
A verbose tome that scratches the surface.......2006-09-03
Compared to the online help, this book reviews favorably. But Revit is a deep program, and to really use Revit efficiently and fully takes more than an "intermediate" book will offer, which the Aubin text admits to being. I say the text is verbose because, for instance, it always refers to Revit as "AutoDesk Revit Building", which gets very tiring. The book introduces Revit by designing two projects, which is nice, but a lot of the useful information is hidden in little sidebar tips, which makes using the book as a reference (for instance, as a command reference) difficult.
Mastering Autodesk Revit Building.......2006-08-22
I purchased this book because of the favorable reviews I read from this site. I wasn't dissapointed...this book delivered. I just recently got hired by a major architectural firm that uses Autodesk Revit Building. My background is Autocad ADT 2006 and have no idea at all what Revit is all about. Two weeks prior to my start with this new firm, I bought this book and diligently went through all of Mr. Aubin's tutorials every night. Now, two weeks into this new company, I am even, if not more advanced, with all their employees (they took the transition to Revit ten months ago)! On a few occasions, I had some questions pertaining to the book and Mr. Aubin had graciously replied promptly to these inquiries by email. If you're not yet using Revit, then you're missing a lot. This is the future of CAD. And if you decide to switch, this book is a must! Thanks for a great book Paul!

Customer Reviews:
The best book in the subject!.......2007-08-13
I have been using Autocad and Autodesk's civil suit products for a little over ten years. This is the third book I bought from the author since his release "Harnessing AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Release 2". The book is very structured and sequencial and it is worth trying it before spending money in expensive Land Desktop or Civil 3D seminars.
I do warn all readers, that the book is not intended to educate in principles of land development civil engineering or surveying, but rather to provide you with guidance in the use of the tool and its applications. You need to have understanding of the use of points, specially those in the fields of survey and site design.
Civil 3D is a powerful software, but requires a good understanding of the initial setting before you can really rip the full benenfits (Prospector). I believe Mr. Zimmerman's "Harnessing Autodesk Civil 3D 2007" provides all what you need to get going on your own and make your way up to mastering it.
Civl 3D is a very structure software requiring lots of initial settings. However, The folks from Autodesk released Civil 3D 2007 with US National CAD Standars (USNCS) templates that easily get you started. This is also a big bonus for all those companies using USNCS as their office CAD standars. For others not familiar with the USNCS, you have some work in front you, but the paybacks are worth the effort.
If you purchase the text, take the time to read it, be patient and work on the exercises. Do not dispair if you to not get the concepts in the first trial. Remember that a book is the most patient of the teachers. Go back ,read it again and try the exercises.
The book is intended for Civil 3D 2007 and not Civil 3D 2006!
Mr. Zimmerman thanks for your enlightment.
PS: I am just a reader and I am not endorsing or supporting either the author, publisher, Autodesk, or any authorized Autodesk training Center.

A good book for new learner.......2007-05-25
This book is very detailed. If you have some basic AutoCAD and Civil engineering knowledge, you are able to use Autodesk Civil 3D after learning and praticing step by step with this book.
Pleasently Surprised.......2007-03-25
This is a well organized and well written text. Unlike the other book on this subject (that has been the only one available) this is a straight-forward technical book that includes all of the materials that it refferences.
The depth of learning I needed........2007-03-10
I'm responsible for my Teams implementation of Civil 3D. All of us came away from the training provided by the retailer with only a base understanding. With this learning guide I am able to train my people with the information they need to know to begin our first Civil 3D project.
Civil 3D is no joke. Its a far cry from the previous Land Development Desktop. And this learning guide is exactly what I needed!
MISSING SECTIONS - NO SURVEY INFO.......2007-02-27
I was extremely disappointed (and quite confused) when I excitedly browsed the index of this book and previewed the chapters as soon as I got it. CHAPTERS 13 AND 14 ARE MISSING! So although they are referenced in the index, there is NO information in this book on survey tasks.
Other than that, the book seems fairly comprehensive at first glance and I know Phil usually writes good stuff. (Which merited the stars) There also seem to be quite a few detailed examples which I am hoping to use with our in-house training group.

Customer Reviews:
Great idea for effects artist that want to go beyond the basics.......2007-07-23
This is one of the best effects books I've purchased. It's not intended for people that just start out with effects, it's meant for people that want to learn to do actually work. I like the realworld format of the book, with projects that are similar to what you would get in actual production. Great Book!
A must have for Maya users........2007-06-10
This book is a must have for Maya users who are interest in becoming VFX artists or Generalists.
I've bought many Maya books and I must say that I feel I've gotten the biggest bang for my buck with one.
Looking forward to Eric Keller's next book.

Interesting read.......2007-05-30
Its not as boring as other manuals, and it explains how to accomplish things, while bringing the ideas of how to use them in better situations. I really enjoy the reality of client speak that is presented in it.
Go beyond Maya.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent book for advanced maya users, teaches some great tricks with latices and light effects.
Has some nice little Gems!.......2007-04-06
If you are interested in taking your existing knowledge of Maya to the next level then Eric's book is a great place to start. The book is laid out logically and easy to follow. The step-by-step examples have plenty of color images makeing it easy to understand. Eric has touched on very broad areas from texturing to rigging some complex setups. There are plenty of Mel and expression examples that add some more complexity with nice results. Many of examples Eric shows can be used for an array of other projects that you may encounter later on.
Book Description
This concise manual goes beyond a series of independent tools and commands to consider the process of creating professional-quality building design projects using the newest release of Autodesk® Architectural Desktop (ADT). Content focuses squarely on the rationale and practicality of ADT 2007 through life-tested, practical lessons that emphasize "why" as well as "how" in order to help readers complete their projects successfully. The text and lessons combine to give an unmistakable sense of the value of the tools introduced as well as a clear indication of each tool's potential. The result is an up-to-the-minute resource that shortens the learning curve and instills confidence and comfort in usage of the software as a tool to create architecture.

Mastering AutoDesktop 2007.......2007-08-13
I was very pleased with the delivery time and quality of the book that I had ordered through Amazon, "Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007". I will most likely order future books this way.
Nice Volume-Somewhat brief.......2007-07-02
I found that this text was more an advanced tutorial than it was a standard textbook. The format was a little informal for my taste. Nonetheless, the Author was clearly knowledgeable, and the book provides a lot of necessary information. I was a little taken aback by how little advantage a knowledge of Autocad is in using the more advanced software
Excellent text but missing items.......2007-03-15
The text is very well written and explains the topics in more than adequate detail. However, there is supposed to be an accompanying CD with files that follow along with the text that would be helpful, but we never received the CD, not in the book nor a separate delivery. Aside from that, we are very happy with the information contained within the text itself.
2007 ADT Tutorial.......2007-03-13
I'm approximately one third of the way through the book. I've been using ACAD for approximately twenty years and I agree with the author that having some ACAD experience is helpful, perhaps essential in learning this software. I'm using it to teach myself and even though the book is excellent, nothing beats being able to ask someone a question when you're stuck. This is very complexe software and if you have a problem, you're left to your own devices. I come from a mechanical engineering background and don't know a soul familiar with ADT. The book is well written and illustrated but you have to read very closely to avoid errors in the exercises.
Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007.......2007-02-19
Has excellent tutorials, but difficult to look up a problem.
Book Description
Designed for busy Maya users like you, this guide offers dozens of how-tos, workarounds, and shortcuts culled from years of experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven production pipeline. You’ll discover tricks and timesavers on texturing particles, customizing Paint Effects brushes, modeling polygon faces, creating facial rigs with wire deformers, and much more—and helpful full-color illustrations reinforce the concepts. From modeling, animating, and rigging to texturing and lighting, this book will help you streamline workflow and improve your skills.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing........2007-03-19
This book is full of useful tips and tricks which are presented in a clear and concise manner. The Photo-reference for every item is unequalled by any other Maya book I own. It's a new standard showing how important it is that full color graphics accompany the text for a subject based on graphics production.
I think that Kirk guy is way more handsome than Chandler... But they both add some very useful knowledge to an already knowledgably written subject.
Another "Must Have" Reference for Maya users........2007-03-14
Lee does it again with this reference for all us Maya users of various skill levels. He gives practical tips based on experience in everyday film production! It covers an entire production pipeline using Maya. He even covers Mel scripting in an elementary way, but with advanced functionality! If you are getting into Maya, and want to learn some professional short cuts, or if you've been using Maya every day and want to pick up some new tricks.. This is a resource I can't recommend enough as a Maya user myself.
A unique Maya book.......2007-03-09
A great book to have around for all skill levels. Autodesk Maya is such a deep program, that you find yourself stumbling upon new approaches and techniques each time you use it. This book is a great source to give you a deeper sense of it's functionality. It's packed with years of experience and innovative ideas that can come to life in Maya.
James Chandler.......2007-03-05
Lee really has this book thing down. I love his second book. And wow is that James Chandler handsom.
truly the master.......2007-03-02
Lee Lanier is definitely a Maya wizard. His tips and techniques go across so many components of this powerful software that it's easy to see why they wanted him to write this, his second book. This book is perfect for those who have some Maya background, and I'm sure you will find it to be exactly what your library needs.

Autodesk Inventor from the Top.......2003-09-27
I have worked my way through about 75 percent of this book. I find it to be very helpful for learning to use Inventor from scratch. I was having no luck at all with the tutorial that came on the software CD. This book has taken me to the intermediate level.
I wish there were fewer typos. I wish there were fewer instances of pick sequences being out of order, (work plane referenced to a surface and an axis). I wish the index did not expect the reader to know the Autodesk vernacular. All the above make using the book dificult, but they do not make it useless. I am able to use the software now as a result of studying this book.
It is not a reference, it is a tutorial, and should be studied in sequence. Each chapter expects the student to know and be able to use the information in the previous chapters.
Bad Title - Good Book- Title should be From the Beginning.......2002-12-11
I have completed beginning and advanced Inventor classes using this book. I have held an A average with very little confusion of how to use the knowledge from this book. It covers all the most necessary topics, detailed enough for me and all of my classmates to master.
Not just disappointing, but totally disappointing.......2002-10-19
I regret wasting money on this book. It is even worst than the online help menu
Disappointing.......2002-01-16
The title of the book is misleading and the book is disappointing. It it the other way round. If you want to find out the tricks of using Inventor or to discover the "tops" of Inventor, don't buy this book. It is simply of replica of the help menu found from the application
Autodesk Inventor From The Top.......2002-01-12
In my 10+ years as a Certified Autodesk Instructor, I have found that there are two approaches to writing a tutorial manual. First, there's the "just shut up and do it" approach, where you follow instructions, but a lack of reference information to explain what you just did causes you to wonder "O.K., I did it, but what did I do?". Then there's the "Russian novel" approach, where the theory is that if you read a three inch thick book about how to play a Mozart piano concerto, that you will be able to sit down at a piano and play a Mozart piano concerto. To master piano, the golf swing, or a complex software program, you have to use it, not read about it.
"Autodesk Inventor From The Top" strikes an excellent blend of reference information with hands-on practice to provide the reader with a thorough grasp of this powerful design tool. The authors provide an "every item of every menu and dialog box" explanation of the guts of the program. They cover many key topics that are missing from the "official" Autodesk Essentials Courseware, most notably a jaw-droppingly powerful feature called Iparts. In fact, it's surprising how much information they crammed into a book of less than 400 pages. The tutorial exercises are, for the most part, accurate and clearly presented. Particularly useful are the practice exercises at the end of each chapter, which challenge you to use the skills learned in the chapter without detailed instructions. This is where you really learn the program (you have to think!).
A few minor boo-boo's pop up occasionally. For instance, the explanation of the "Defer Update" setting in the Assemblies chapter says the opposite of what it should, the "Shaft" drawing in Tutorial 4.2 is missing from the book's CD, and the drawing for Tutorial 6.4 is already completed (the CD problems may have already been cleared up at the publisher). Also, on a grammatical note, (and I'm nit-picking here) the writing has a lot of passive voice, which tends to detract from the precision and efficiency of the instruction. But these problems are minor compared to the grasp that you will gain of a very powerful and feature-packed design tool from a relatively small investment of time and money.

Book Description
Updated to the newest release, Customizing AutoCAD 2002 unravels the power of AutoCAD by explaining in detail various customizing techniques available in AutoCAD 2002. The book provides AutoCAD users with information on customizing features like creating template drawings, script files, slide shows, linetypes, hatch patterns, menus (pull-down menus, cascading menus, cursor menus, partial menus, tablet menus, image menus, buttom menus and auxiliary menus), customizing toolbars, and creating shapes and text fonts. The book also contains a detailed explanation on the introductory concepts of AutoLISP, Visual LISP, Dialog Control Language (DCL), Visual Basic, and Sring Expression Language (DIESEL). Every concept is discussed in detail and every chapter contains examples that take the reader step-by-step through the problems. Review questions and exercises reinforce key concepts. Coverage is aimed at showing readers how to become more productive by learning how to automate procedures and run aplications more efficiently.
Customer Reviews:
Is This What We are Looking For?.......2002-10-06
The only book that is currently available in the market and focuses on AutoCAD customization is the one written by Mr. Tickoo. The idea of writing such a book is really good, but unfortunately the book is not what readers are looking for.
- It covers some irrelevant topics such as AutoCAD Calculator, Template Files, and Database Connectivity
- The book is old fashioned. It is written for older versions of AutoCAD and not updated for latest versions properly. You can refer to the chapter that covers Slide Shows to get what I mean.
- The book does not cover important topics such as metric-english variaties in AutoCAD
- The chapters discussing Programming languages are superficial and it seems they exist just to increase the size of the book. Please refer to chapters covering VBA and VLISP
Unfortunately there is no other choices for AutoCAD users but if there was a better resource I wouldn't buy this book at all.
