Book Description
This text seeks to answer the two main questions relating to contract law: What promises does society enforce, and why does it enforce them? Writing in a clear and concise way, Hillman provides a great overview of the daunting area of contract law with numerous illustrations.
This book covers the main topics of contract law typically treated in a first-year law school course on the subject, and handles topics such as bargain theory, fraud, remedies, contract interpretation, breach of contract, grounds for excusing performance, and third parties.

A must.......2007-01-09
A must for those clueless 1Ls who finish their semester and go into finals thinking, "huh?" about Contracts. Although I guess I should include the disclaimer that the book is probably just useful as an companion to Summers and Hillman's casebook.
Excellent supplement to the Hillman/Summers Casebook.......2006-07-19
This hornbook makes reading the case book very, very easy. It summarizes all of the concepts from their textbook in a simple and concise manner. I highly recommend reading this book and staying a few pages ahead of your assigned text reading.
Excellent prepatory book.......2006-05-18
I bought this and used it heavily through Contracts, and found it took be a very good supplement to the casebook. It covers the main issues in very good detail, but cannot be trusted as a single source for contract law of course - a short book could not be expected to do that.
The book is written in an informal but very information way, and cites many of the popular cases that will presumably exist in your casebook.
That said, if someone read this book before starting contracts, or read each chapter before reading cases relating to the material in that chapter, you'd probably get a more complete and faster comprehension of the material. This book is great for that purpose.
absolute must have.......2006-02-19
If you want to understand contracts, this is the book you need. I was very confused at the beginning of the semester, but I used this book to supplement my reading and ended up getting an A in the class. Very concise and readable, no confusing language. Good luck.

Poor Presentation.......2003-06-11
I was terribly disappointed in this book. I teach construction law at a community college and was assigned to use this book my first semester. I'll not use it again. The organization of the information was questionable. Many statements contained in the book were flat wrong or presented only a misrepresentative portion of a bigger picture. Many key topics were completely unaddressed. I can say that where the book is correct, the information is presented in plain English and provides the student with useable information about the basics.
Construction Contracting: Business and Legal Principles.......2000-10-05
At first I was disappointed when I realized the book was written primarily as a teaching text for senior students in baccalaureate university programs in construction engineering or construction management. However, the book is so well written and full of case law references that I was immediately provided with excellent material for two in-process construction claims packages.

A Clear, Well-Edited Case Book.......2007-08-23
Chances are, if you're reading this review, you're a student who's been assigned this book for your introductory Contracts class. If you have, you're in luck, because this is one of the clearest case books that I read as a first year law student.
If, on the other hand, you're a law professor who's considering reading or using this book for one of your classes, please give this book a fair chance as it's well written, well-edited, and provides a clear picture that helps prevent your students from having that look of desperation that's so common during the first year of law school.
Contracts was not my favorite course from my first year of law school (far from it, in fact) but this book is what made the course bearable for me. The format of the book is simple, and in its simplicity is brilliant.
Each chapter begins with a clear and concise introduction, providing the student with the basic vocabulary necessary to understand the material that that chapter covers.
The chapters are further broken up into sections. Each section also begins with a brief, but well-written and clear introduction, which guides the student gently into the ideas that are about to be covered. After this introduction, there is usually a list of the Restatement and U.C.C. provisions that are relevant to the material about to be covered. Then there's a case or two, followed by questions and notes on the material just covered. This is followed by a couple more cases, which are also followed by questions and notes, and thus ends that section, to be followed by a section that is structured similarly.
It's a simple formula, and it works. The introduction orients the students successfully. The Restatement and U.C.C. provisions provide general rules that are then applied in the first case or two. Note materials and questions following those first cases are provided to get the student thinking. The next couple cases provide exceptions to or variations on the general rule. Note material sums it up and then the student is ready to move on to the next topic.
This books is one of the prettier ones in my collection (with the faux-leather cover) and doesn't get destroyed easily like the books published by Aspen. Also, it's only about an inch and a quarter thick, which meant it was the only book I didn't hate dragging around for a semester.
I'm really glad this was the book I used for my intro-Contracts class.
From a Former Student: This is the Model of all Casebooks........1999-04-19
In what generally can be categorized as unreadable, dense, unorganized and without clear themes, Professor Burton's textbook for law students is a clear aberration. Professor Burton presents contract law in a clear outline fashion, divided into different and inciteful principles. Cases within each principle clearly present individual "trees" and in the end, the reader comes out with a very clear and workable picture of the "forest." Professor Burton does not "hide the ball" in the form of ongoing, mindless and unreadable "Notes and Questions."
All law professors and aspiring law professors should consider Burton's text as the standard and the model to which all legal texts should aspire.
negative.......1998-09-29
I have studied contract law for 35 years and have never read such a piece of absolute garbage. Burton obviously spent little time writing this one.

Book Description
Guides you step-by-step through the confusing world of surety bonding
Obtaining performance bonds can be a long, arduous, frustrating process, fraught with obscure legalese and endless hoops for contractors to jump through. Contractors need all the help they can get in making sense of and navigating the confusing world of surety bonding. Unfortunately, most books on the subject are written for lawyers and provide little or no practical guidance for contractors. Written by a suretyship expert with more than three decades of experience working with contractors, this book fills that gap in the literature.
In plain English, author Richard C. Lewis brings surety bonding down to earth for contractors. Covering all types of contracts and all forms of bonds, he walks you step-by-step through the entire bonding process. He introduces you to the various players involved and explains who is responsible for what. He carefully explains the rationale behind each step, the issues involved, when it is required, and how best to prepare for it. And, with the help of fascinating real-life case studies, Lewis describes common mistakes that can blow a deal and tells you how to avoid them. He also provides invaluable insights into underwriter psychology and shows you how to work with surety company representatives to resolve any spoken or unspoken objections they may have to providing you with the surety you need.
Contract Suretyship is an indispensable tool of the trade for construction and contracting firm owners and managers.

Mapping the Law: Essays in Memory of Peter Birks
ASIN: 0199287538 |
Book Description
The second edition of this textbook lays out the key principles which underlie that body of law known as the law of restitution. This subject was recognised by the House of Lords as a discrete body of law fifteen years ago - although restitutionary principles have, in fact, been evolving for over 200 years. Since the recognition of the subject by the House of Lords the subject has developed dramatically, and even more rapidly since the publication of the first edition of this text in 1999. The law of restitution is concerned with the questions of when restitutionary remedies may be awarded. These are remedies which operate to deprive defendants of gains rather than to compensate claimants for losses. The traditional approach to the subject assumes that restitutionary remedies are only available to reverse unjust enrichment. In this book the author asserts that restitutionary remedies are triggered by three different types of action: The reversal of the defendant's unjust enrichment The commission of a wrong by the defendant The vindication of the claimant's property rights Since the publication of the first edition of this book this model has increasingly been recognised by the courts. In this book the law is examined through analyses of key cases and relevant statutory provisions, demonstrating the way in which the law in used to solve a wide variety of legal problems. The very different views of academics on the nature and ambit of the subject are also carefully considered. The result will be invaluable to students on restitution courses at every level, practitioners and those engaged in research on the subject.

Book Description
With the global expansion of the maritime sector, marine insurance is on the forefront nowadays, more than ever before. Notwithstanding this growth, a vast number of legal disputes continues to emerge, with indemnity being, inter alia, amidst their focal points. Accordingly, the author discusses legal issues correlated to the principle of indemnity which is entailed in such contracts as well as in disputes that may arise there under, in a representative sample of common and continental law jurisdictions. In view of the ongoing attempt for unification, undertaken by the Comité Maritime Internationale (CMI) since 1998, it has been considered essential that the discussion encompasses an international and comparative aspect. Hence, this book comparatively examines Australian, English, Canadian, French, Greek, Norwegian and U.S. law, from the angle of indemnity in marine insurance contracts, the scope for a legal reform and the potential of harmonization, in terms of achieving a better, more flexible and modern indemnification regime in marine insurance.
