Spychips takes readers into the frightening world of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).While manufacturers and the government want you to believe that they would never misuse the technology, the future looks like an Orwellian nightmare when you consider the possibilities of surveillance and tracking these chips embody. Combining in-depth research with firsthand reporting, Spychips reveals how RFID technology, if left unchecked, could soon destroy our privacy, radically alter the economy, and open the floodgates for civil liberty abuses.
From handheld magnifying glasses to sophisticated magnetic resonance imaging machines, "spy" devices allow us to see beyond the basic senses that nature gave us in ways we wouldn't have imagined two hundred years ago. Understanding Surveillance Technologies: Spy Devices, Their Origins and Applications lays the groundwork for understanding more advanced technologies such as radar, sonar, video cameras, and genetic profiling.
Practically useless.......2002-07-18To read this book is a complete waste of time, at least if you are interested in technical information.
Hundreds of pages dedicated to description of problems starting almost from the Creation, when there was a vague similarity to what present technology can do, but no really good information for users or hobbysts.
Go to other books and save a lot of money!
"Industry standard introductory text" well-deserved.......2001-08-24
While those interested in specific cutting edge surveillance technologies per se will not find much of value here, those who want a sweeping reference to EVERYTHING (well, almost) in the field definitely need this book. The meticulous research on historical development of the various technologies is evident, and though technical detail is absent, readers are still given a good ideal of how things work. A mind-boggling array of available applications is presented, together with societal and legislative concerns. The modular structure of the chapters and the many references to resources elsewhere make this book a convenient starting point for both readers who want only an overview, and those who need to delve deeper into a particular technology.
I can only say that I am impressed by the effort taken to collect all the information in this understandably thick volume.

Useful..........2004-09-01
if you believe the "man"! While my experience truly rests killing off a different form of "bugs", this book does provide a useful overview of the field of electronic pests. I've recommended it widely within our professional guild. The author is careful to present a mix of common tricks that are really simple (for example, just leaving a tape recorder running in the room), but still shows how this can be extended into the 21st century.
Not for the pros out there........2003-03-15
Everyone knows our rights are shrinking everyday that goes by. Add to this the problem of nosey neighbors, landlords, or an over enthusiastic law enforcement agency and you have a bug problem. This book covers many of the basic aspects of these hidden bugs and cameras, and goes foward from there to indepth detail about these devices work and how to beat them. This Book is set up as a basic manual for starting a debugging business.

Customer Reviews:
A text for the serious student of the art.......2003-10-01
This is the best book in this genre that you will read - not that there's much competition. The title sells the book a bit short because it actually covers a wide range of eavesdropping technology, not just small radio transmitters.
This book has many strong points. The author claims to have provided equipment for numerous police forces and his experience shows in his concentration on collecting good audio, so important for courtroom use. Unlike other texts in covering this topic the author has a good grounding in basic physics (eg: circuit noise) which puts this book streets ahead of any others.
Points well covered include: microphones including placement, reflectors and resonators; EQ curves; filtering; limiting; dynamic range and analogue techniques to dig out or improve weak audio. There are more advanced techniques in amplifier design and stabilization of high gain blocks than other texts cover.
Reflecting standard professional operating procedures where audio is often sent by carrier current, ultrasonics and infrared - all of which are well treated - there is little mention of RF bugs with only a few narrow band FM circuits shown. "Shifty" also mentions repeaters (something you don't read much about) and hardwire, techniques heavily used by government agencies. Some simple but well-tried wiretapping techniques are covered. Counter bugging gets coverage with some interesting circuits, such as a time domain reflectometer. The References should be titled Further Reading.
There are some disappointments: all these techniques are old - in fact they are standard procedures from the 1930s updated with modern components. That does not mean they are bad techniques, they are well-proven, but technology has moved on. There is nothing about tapping coax, Cat5 cable or optical fibre. The RF bug section mentions sub-carriers, double sideband, wideband FM and spread spectrum but gives no circuits. There is no mention of microwaves, digital modulation or scrambling, all standard 1960s techniques. There is nothing about video. "Shifty" even dismisses as laboratory curiosities technologies in use since the 1940s. The author's writing style is too idiosyncratic by half. I had to read it twice. Not good for someone who claims to be a journalist. His war stories, though, are entertaining.
Still, if you want a Further Eavesdropping 201 textbook, this is it. This book is not for beginners, even though "Shifty" provides some good tutorials (eg: circuit board design). If you have a background in electronics and want to be able to offer professional advice on privacy and security, read this. But for stalkers and wannabe spies - this is out of your league.
the buggers bible minus the bugs.......2003-05-04
Im dissapointed! The book is both overpriced and over-hyped! In fact, there are no R.F. (radio-frequencie) bugs in the whole book. Which is something one would expect! The only chapter on rf bugs gives you some general info on what a bug is...and there are a couple of diagrams on how a 1 transistor rf core might look...(might look!) No board layouts for same . It does have a number of amplifier circuits and a nice rf sniffer(bug detector with audio) It does have a number of projects which appear to be the same as the home workshop spy. Perhaps same writer. It does have some merits but id wait till you can pick it up used.
Fantastic!. THE best Electronic Reference manual I have read.......2001-01-09
Without doubt, this book is definitely THE best Electronic surveillance Reference manual available, and is just about the most informative book I have ever had the pleasure to read. I say "Reference" because that is how I would define its contents - as a true reference, both theoretical & practical. From cover to cover, this book is packed with information regarding all aspects of analogue electronic surveillance, and includes detailed circuit diagrams (yes, with component values too!) of working examples throughout. Also included are sections on actual surveillance operations, along with a detailed "How to build bugs" section covering necessary construction techniques. Many of the circuits & techniques described can be applied in areas other than surveillance, but if it's surveillance information you're after, this book cuts through the chaff to give "hands-on" specific details which would be difficult, if not impossible to find elsewhere.
The text is written in a truly interesting style, and is a refreshing change from the usual monotonous reading of electronic textbooks. The author knows his stuff, and has obviously had many years of experience in constructing & implementing bugs & taps, the level of detail proving this beyond any doubt. A word of caution, it is aimed at the competent to advanced electronic hobbyist, and/or Electronic Engineer. Some sections may prove too in-depth for the novice, and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with no electronic knowledge at all. Far from being a criticism, this is a complement to the technical detail contained throughout - well worth the money!
Comprehensive treatment of analog audio survelliance.......2000-06-25
Very good, very impressive (and I don't impress easily) Most books on "covert" or "restricted" subjects are hogwash because those that know, don't tell, those that don't, do. This book offers a comprehensive, focused "build from scratch" treatment of analog audio within the skills of the mid to advanced electronic hobbyist.
The section on microphones and balanced transmission lines is by itself worth the price of admission.
Along with microphones, the book covers amplifiers, gain control, filters and compression; IR, ultrasonic and RF transmission. Unique to this book is the section on stereo bugging - rent a copy of "The Conversation" and you can see this in action in the opening scene.
As the previous reviewer mentioned, the book also contains appendixes which cover basic theory, components, design and electronic construction techniques - very hard to do well and missing from most books.
Best of all, it's fun to read (in the style of Lee Lapin) with many anecdotes of fieldcraft, even if you're just curious. If the author ever decides to do a companion book on digital/data bugging as good as this one, this truly would be the "bible" (in the literal sense of the word) of electronic survelliance.
You'll get your money's worth.......2000-04-21
Cover to cover, this book is THE reference for building bugs and wiretaps. Book contains not only theory, but schematics, descriptions, detailed assembly photographs, and a section full of circuit board layout negatives for those "do it yourself" types. I was suprised to see up-to-date wiretapping methods (Especially with photos!). Every possible electronic surveillance circuit is covered in this manual, along with two or three different modifications of each. Testing information and results also included with each circuit. Check this one out. I'm glad I did.

Book Description
Understanding Surveillance Technologies demystifies spy devices and describes how technology is used to observe and record intimate details of people's lives-often without their knowledge or consent. From historical origins to current applications, it explains how satellites, pinhole cameras, cell phone and credit card logs, DNA kits, tiny microphones ("bugs"), chemical sniffers, and implanted RF/ID chips have enabled us to create a two-edged sword-devices that promise security while, at the same time, eroding our privacy. Understanding Surveillance Technologies is profusely illustrated with extensive references and indexes, laying the groundwork for more specialized texts on specific technologies. It covers each of the major sensing devices and explains how they are used in civilian, criminal justice, scientific, national security, and military applications. It also includes recent changes in legislation and the organization of the intelligence community, and discusses how equal access to high-tech sensing devices and encryption schemes has changed society. Understanding Surveillance Technologies is modular, so the chapters can be read in any order, and is written in an accessible, somewhat narrative style, to suit the needs of journalists/newscasters, privacy organizations, educators, civic planners, and technology centers. It is appropriate as an adjunct reference for criminal justice/law enforcement/military, and forensic trainees, and as a textbook for courses in Surveillance Studies, Sociology, Communications, and Political Science. Now in its second edition, with 1,000 pages and more than 700 diagrams, it is still the only text that comprehensively conveys the breadth of the field.

Book Description
Maps, as we know, help us find our way around. But they're also powerful tools for someone hoping to find you. Widely available in electronic and paper formats, maps offer revealing insights into our movements and activities, even our likes and dislikes. In Spying with Maps, the "mapmatician" Mark Monmonier looks at the increased use of geographic data, satellite imagery, and location tracking across a wide range of fields such as military intelligence, law enforcement, market research, and traffic engineering. Could these diverse forms of geographic monitoring, he asks, lead to grave consequences for society? To assess this very real threat, he explains how geospatial technology works, what it can reveal, who uses it, and to what effect.
Despite our apprehension about surveillance technology, Spying with Maps is not a jeremiad, crammed with dire warnings about eyes in the sky and invasive tracking. Monmonier's approach encompasses both skepticism and the acknowledgment that geospatial technology brings with it unprecedented benefits to governments, institutions, and individuals, especially in an era of asymmetric warfare and bioterrorism. Monmonier frames his explanations of what this new technology is and how it works with the question of whether locational privacy is a fundamental right. Does the right to be left alone include not letting Big Brother (or a legion of Little Brothers) know where we are or where we've been? What sacrifices must we make for homeland security and open government?
With his usual wit and clarity, Monmonier offers readers an engaging, even-handed introduction to the dark side of the new technology that surrounds us—from traffic cameras and weather satellites to personal GPS devices and wireless communications.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but light reading on Surveillance technology.......2006-06-11
This books addresses some topics on satellite imaging, and other technology fields applied to surveillance.
While an interesting reading, and providing very good detail (evolution of satellite resolution over the years) in some areas, it stays on the surface of others, giving the reader (me at least) the impression that there was a lot left outside. Some chapters do not deal with privacy of individuals, but communities.
The book is short and easy to read, and will provide with some good "food for thought".
good overview of satalite technologies.......2003-03-27
this is a great book. its easy to read and informative. it gives clear examples and even includes pictures to help the explain concepts its talking about. its a good sampling of what satelite technology can and cant do and what and how its used in our everyday lives. and about how satelites are used in making maps and mapping and what the maps are used for.
An intriguing examination of the science of spying.......2003-02-09
Spying With Maps: Surveillance Technologies And The Future Of Privacy blends an examination of surveillance technologies with a discussion of the nature and future of privacy in a world which is becoming increasingly open to spy apparatus. Spying With Maps could have been featured in our chapter on social issues, but is reviewed here for its intriguing examination of the science of spying, from using geographic data and satellite imagery to location tracking devices.
