Book Description

As you walk down the street, a tiny microchip implanted in your tennis shoe tracks your every move; chips woven into your clothing transmit the value of your outfit to nearby retailers; and a thief scans the chips hidden inside your money to decide if you're worth robbing. This isn't science fiction; in a few short years, it could be a fact of life.

Spychips takes readers into the frightening world of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).While manufacturers and the government want you to believe that they would never misuse the technology, the future looks like an Orwellian nightmare when you consider the possibilities of surveillance and tracking these chips embody. Combining in-depth research with firsthand reporting, Spychips reveals how RFID technology, if left unchecked, could soon destroy our privacy, radically alter the economy, and open the floodgates for civil liberty abuses.

1 out of 5 stars Pulp Fiction, Pop Science.......2007-09-20

Albrecht's book is a sensational account of what could happen if the laws of physics were suspended and all men were created evil. It is pure fantasy. One of the reviewers said that only in America can someone with such limited knowledge and no credentials write a book about something they know little about. This is a silly book with mistatements galore. It does a disservice to those people who are true privacy advocates but wish to employ technology in a privacy enhancing way. False statements give rise to false fears and that is what Ms. Albrecht is all about. She needs to take a course or two on RFID before she writes about it.

5 out of 5 stars A must read - everyone should know about the uses of RFID to track items, people, ???.......2007-05-13

This should be required reading in schools and colleges - people need to know how RFID can be used - for example, prices being changed based on who is purchasing an item - all people need to know how RFID can be used ethically - and unethically. And it seems corporations are not too hung up on ethics -

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read it.......2007-04-18

This is not light reading, but I truly think every American should read this book! I have heard Dr. Albrecht speak on numerous occasions, and I think that most of us in our nation are sleeping while our freedoms are chipped away. (no pun intended) Our right to privacy is one of the most personal freedoms.

After reading this book, you will think twice about EVERY purchase you make again! Not to mention answering personal questions while doing ordinary business every day.

A MUST READ! This is a highly documented and well-researched book.

I just purchased an extra copy to loan out to others.

5 out of 5 stars The Road to 1984.......2007-01-15

Like many people, I have tended to neglect the downside of new technologies. Even though we are bombarded with advertising these days, it never occurred to me that supposedly responsible corporations would stoop to the lengths described in this book, such as literally spying on my movements while I am shopping! Parts of the book were a bit repetitive, but it certainly made me realize how very easily all of us could be led onto the road to 1984 and away from the privacy and freedoms we have long enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars People need to Wake Up!.......2007-01-05

I've been following industry news on RFID and related technologies for quite some time. Industry tells us that this technology will "simplify your life" or "make life safer". And in some ways it does. However, there are other important points, some even more important than the safety aspects. These points are far from positive, ranging from an almost total lack of privacy in all aspects of our lives, to the centralizing of an amazing amount of information on, and access to, everyone, worldwide. One can only lay back and take this with a comfortable smile if they believe that nobody using this technology will ever have any ulterier, negative, or dangerous use in mind - now and into the foreseable future. Katherine Albrecht, and others she works with, have spearheaded reporting on this for a long time through the group CASPIAN (check it out online), and now this book brings together years of research and information and presents it in a very readable and instructive way. This book is not an anti-technology scare tactic. It simply balances the view and shows us that there are many things about technology that we need to be aware of, cautious about, and that we should not blindly accept all technology that is developed. Hopefully this book will reach the general population. This book would be a good study tool in schools.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best Surveillance book on Amazon.com.......2006-12-11

I come from a Policing and surveillance background and bought this book because I am going into security training including for surveillance and close protection. I bought this book plus "Surveillance Counter-Measures - A serious guide to detecting, evading and eluding threats to personal privacy" and "Secrets of Surveillance - A Professionals guide to tailing subjects by vehicle, foot, airplane and public transport.

Advanced Surveillance, I found, was far superior to these other books. The other books has a lot of basic content in them, but very little in the form of pictures and illustrations and sub-headlines. There are just massive blocks of copy which are difficult to read and understand. The content was also slightly above basic.

Advanced Surveillance has a lot of diagrams and pictures. It is also laid out up in such a way that makes it easy to read and understand. There are also plenty of case studies from the author to give context to the concepts it teaches.

It would certainly be good for anyone working in surveillance. I have also used some of these principles in close protection to help identify any surveillance threats at the embus/debus locations to make sure no-one is following a principal upon departure from a venue.

My biggest criticism however is that Advanced Surveillance only has a basic table of contents, making it very difficult to navigate. An Index would also help.

It could also go into 'surveillance indicators' a bit more such as looking out for bananas (operatives catching up around a corner to chat), uniforms (such as team members carrying the same brand of mobile phone and/or bag, which happens more than we'd like to admit) and behaviours such as peeking and target fixation etc.

Other than that... excellent and definately recommended above those other books mentioned previously.

5 out of 5 stars The target audience for the surveillance book.......2002-08-01

In light of the previous review, I thought it would be useful to clarify the audience for people considering buying this book. Understanding Surveillance Technologies wasn't written for hands-on hobbyists or electronics buffs. There are some really good books out there with detailed schematics on designing cameras, audio devices, and more. Instead, this book was written to fill a glaring need for a comprehensive text introducing and explaining the scope of surveillance technologies and the many fields in which it is being used, including traffic and community safety, DNA testing, corporate and retail surveillance, and much more.
In a sense it is a "surveillance studies" text that describes the technologies and the ethical considerations concerning their use. This information is useful to newscasters, journalists, politicians making executive decisions about allocating public funds for surveillance technologies, corporations, legal assistants, post-secondary instructors, and students and beginning professionals in law enforcement, forensics, and military surveillance. If you need to know what surveillance encompasses, how it came about, how it's being used, and how and why we need to take a good hard look at how it's implemented, this book rounds out the picture more thoroughly than any other text on the subject at the present time. 1 out of 5 stars Practically useless.......2002-07-18

To read this book is a complete waste of time, at least if you are interested in technical information.
Hundreds of pages dedicated to description of problems starting almost from the Creation, when there was a vague similarity to what present technology can do, but no really good information for users or hobbysts.
Go to other books and save a lot of money!

5 out of 5 stars "Industry standard introductory text" well-deserved.......2001-08-24

While those interested in specific cutting edge surveillance technologies per se will not find much of value here, those who want a sweeping reference to EVERYTHING (well, almost) in the field definitely need this book. The meticulous research on historical development of the various technologies is evident, and though technical detail is absent, readers are still given a good ideal of how things work. A mind-boggling array of available applications is presented, together with societal and legislative concerns. The modular structure of the chapters and the many references to resources elsewhere make this book a convenient starting point for both readers who want only an overview, and those who need to delve deeper into a particular technology.

I can only say that I am impressed by the effort taken to collect all the information in this understandably thick volume.

if you believe the "man"! While my experience truly rests killing off a different form of "bugs", this book does provide a useful overview of the field of electronic pests. I've recommended it widely within our professional guild. The author is careful to present a mix of common tricks that are really simple (for example, just leaving a tape recorder running in the room), but still shows how this can be extended into the 21st century.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A text for the serious student of the art.......2003-10-01

This is the best book in this genre that you will read - not that there's much competition. The title sells the book a bit short because it actually covers a wide range of eavesdropping technology, not just small radio transmitters.

This book has many strong points. The author claims to have provided equipment for numerous police forces and his experience shows in his concentration on collecting good audio, so important for courtroom use. Unlike other texts in covering this topic the author has a good grounding in basic physics (eg: circuit noise) which puts this book streets ahead of any others.

Points well covered include: microphones including placement, reflectors and resonators; EQ curves; filtering; limiting; dynamic range and analogue techniques to dig out or improve weak audio. There are more advanced techniques in amplifier design and stabilization of high gain blocks than other texts cover.

Reflecting standard professional operating procedures where audio is often sent by carrier current, ultrasonics and infrared - all of which are well treated - there is little mention of RF bugs with only a few narrow band FM circuits shown. "Shifty" also mentions repeaters (something you don't read much about) and hardwire, techniques heavily used by government agencies. Some simple but well-tried wiretapping techniques are covered. Counter bugging gets coverage with some interesting circuits, such as a time domain reflectometer. The References should be titled Further Reading.

There are some disappointments: all these techniques are old - in fact they are standard procedures from the 1930s updated with modern components. That does not mean they are bad techniques, they are well-proven, but technology has moved on. There is nothing about tapping coax, Cat5 cable or optical fibre. The RF bug section mentions sub-carriers, double sideband, wideband FM and spread spectrum but gives no circuits. There is no mention of microwaves, digital modulation or scrambling, all standard 1960s techniques. There is nothing about video. "Shifty" even dismisses as laboratory curiosities technologies in use since the 1940s. The author's writing style is too idiosyncratic by half. I had to read it twice. Not good for someone who claims to be a journalist. His war stories, though, are entertaining.

Still, if you want a Further Eavesdropping 201 textbook, this is it. This book is not for beginners, even though "Shifty" provides some good tutorials (eg: circuit board design). If you have a background in electronics and want to be able to offer professional advice on privacy and security, read this. But for stalkers and wannabe spies - this is out of your league.

3 out of 5 stars the buggers bible minus the bugs.......2003-05-04

Im dissapointed! The book is both overpriced and over-hyped! In fact, there are no R.F. (radio-frequencie) bugs in the whole book. Which is something one would expect! The only chapter on rf bugs gives you some general info on what a bug is...and there are a couple of diagrams on how a 1 transistor rf core might look...(might look!) No board layouts for same . It does have a number of amplifier circuits and a nice rf sniffer(bug detector with audio) It does have a number of projects which appear to be the same as the home workshop spy. Perhaps same writer. It does have some merits but id wait till you can pick it up used.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!. THE best Electronic Reference manual I have read.......2001-01-09

Without doubt, this book is definitely THE best Electronic surveillance Reference manual available, and is just about the most informative book I have ever had the pleasure to read. I say "Reference" because that is how I would define its contents - as a true reference, both theoretical & practical. From cover to cover, this book is packed with information regarding all aspects of analogue electronic surveillance, and includes detailed circuit diagrams (yes, with component values too!) of working examples throughout. Also included are sections on actual surveillance operations, along with a detailed "How to build bugs" section covering necessary construction techniques. Many of the circuits & techniques described can be applied in areas other than surveillance, but if it's surveillance information you're after, this book cuts through the chaff to give "hands-on" specific details which would be difficult, if not impossible to find elsewhere.

The text is written in a truly interesting style, and is a refreshing change from the usual monotonous reading of electronic textbooks. The author knows his stuff, and has obviously had many years of experience in constructing & implementing bugs & taps, the level of detail proving this beyond any doubt. A word of caution, it is aimed at the competent to advanced electronic hobbyist, and/or Electronic Engineer. Some sections may prove too in-depth for the novice, and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with no electronic knowledge at all. Far from being a criticism, this is a complement to the technical detail contained throughout - well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive treatment of analog audio survelliance.......2000-06-25

Very good, very impressive (and I don't impress easily) Most books on "covert" or "restricted" subjects are hogwash because those that know, don't tell, those that don't, do. This book offers a comprehensive, focused "build from scratch" treatment of analog audio within the skills of the mid to advanced electronic hobbyist.

The section on microphones and balanced transmission lines is by itself worth the price of admission.

Along with microphones, the book covers amplifiers, gain control, filters and compression; IR, ultrasonic and RF transmission. Unique to this book is the section on stereo bugging - rent a copy of "The Conversation" and you can see this in action in the opening scene.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, the book also contains appendixes which cover basic theory, components, design and electronic construction techniques - very hard to do well and missing from most books.

Best of all, it's fun to read (in the style of Lee Lapin) with many anecdotes of fieldcraft, even if you're just curious. If the author ever decides to do a companion book on digital/data bugging as good as this one, this truly would be the "bible" (in the literal sense of the word) of electronic survelliance.

    5 out of 5 stars You'll get your money's worth.......2000-04-21

Cover to cover, this book is THE reference for building bugs and wiretaps. Book contains not only theory, but schematics, descriptions, detailed assembly photographs, and a section full of circuit board layout negatives for those "do it yourself" types. I was suprised to see up-to-date wiretapping methods (Especially with photos!). Every possible electronic surveillance circuit is covered in this manual, along with two or three different modifications of each. Testing information and results also included with each circuit. Check this one out. I'm glad I did.

      Book Description

Understanding Surveillance Technologies demystifies spy devices and describes how technology is used to observe and record intimate details of people's lives-often without their knowledge or consent. From historical origins to current applications, it explains how satellites, pinhole cameras, cell phone and credit card logs, DNA kits, tiny microphones ("bugs"), chemical sniffers, and implanted RF/ID chips have enabled us to create a two-edged sword-devices that promise security while, at the same time, eroding our privacy. Understanding Surveillance Technologies is profusely illustrated with extensive references and indexes, laying the groundwork for more specialized texts on specific technologies. It covers each of the major sensing devices and explains how they are used in civilian, criminal justice, scientific, national security, and military applications. It also includes recent changes in legislation and the organization of the intelligence community, and discusses how equal access to high-tech sensing devices and encryption schemes has changed society. Understanding Surveillance Technologies is modular, so the chapters can be read in any order, and is written in an accessible, somewhat narrative style, to suit the needs of journalists/newscasters, privacy organizations, educators, civic planners, and technology centers. It is appropriate as an adjunct reference for criminal justice/law enforcement/military, and forensic trainees, and as a textbook for courses in Surveillance Studies, Sociology, Communications, and Political Science. Now in its second edition, with 1,000 pages and more than 700 diagrams, it is still the only text that comprehensively conveys the breadth of the field.

      Book Description

Maps, as we know, help us find our way around. But they're also powerful tools for someone hoping to find you. Widely available in electronic and paper formats, maps offer revealing insights into our movements and activities, even our likes and dislikes. In Spying with Maps, the "mapmatician" Mark Monmonier looks at the increased use of geographic data, satellite imagery, and location tracking across a wide range of fields such as military intelligence, law enforcement, market research, and traffic engineering. Could these diverse forms of geographic monitoring, he asks, lead to grave consequences for society? To assess this very real threat, he explains how geospatial technology works, what it can reveal, who uses it, and to what effect.

Despite our apprehension about surveillance technology, Spying with Maps is not a jeremiad, crammed with dire warnings about eyes in the sky and invasive tracking. Monmonier's approach encompasses both skepticism and the acknowledgment that geospatial technology brings with it unprecedented benefits to governments, institutions, and individuals, especially in an era of asymmetric warfare and bioterrorism. Monmonier frames his explanations of what this new technology is and how it works with the question of whether locational privacy is a fundamental right. Does the right to be left alone include not letting Big Brother (or a legion of Little Brothers) know where we are or where we've been? What sacrifices must we make for homeland security and open government?

With his usual wit and clarity, Monmonier offers readers an engaging, even-handed introduction to the dark side of the new technology that surrounds us—from traffic cameras and weather satellites to personal GPS devices and wireless communications.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but light reading on Surveillance technology.......2006-06-11

This books addresses some topics on satellite imaging, and other technology fields applied to surveillance.
While an interesting reading, and providing very good detail (evolution of satellite resolution over the years) in some areas, it stays on the surface of others, giving the reader (me at least) the impression that there was a lot left outside. Some chapters do not deal with privacy of individuals, but communities.
The book is short and easy to read, and will provide with some good "food for thought".

5 out of 5 stars good overview of satalite technologies.......2003-03-27

this is a great book. its easy to read and informative. it gives clear examples and even includes pictures to help the explain concepts its talking about. its a good sampling of what satelite technology can and cant do and what and how its used in our everyday lives. and about how satelites are used in making maps and mapping and what the maps are used for.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing examination of the science of spying.......2003-02-09

Spying With Maps: Surveillance Technologies And The Future Of Privacy blends an examination of surveillance technologies with a discussion of the nature and future of privacy in a world which is becoming increasingly open to spy apparatus. Spying With Maps could have been featured in our chapter on social issues, but is reviewed here for its intriguing examination of the science of spying, from using geographic data and satellite imagery to location tracking devices.
