Book Description
Examines structural aspects of high rise buildings, particularly fundamental approaches to the analysis of the behavior of different forms of building structures including frame, shear wall, tubular, core and outrigger-braced systems. Introductory chapters discuss the forces to which the structure is subjected, design criteria which are of the greatest relevance to tall buildings, and various structural forms which have developed over the years since the first skyscrapers were built at the turn of the century. A major chapter is devoted to the modeling of real structures for both preliminary and final analyses. Considerable attention is devoted to the assessment of the stability of the structure, and the significance of creep and shrinkage is discussed. A final chapter is devoted to the dynamic response of structures subjected to wind and earthquake forces. Includes both accurate computer-based and approximate methods of analysis.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
This book establishes a proper firefighting mindset and promotes maintaining preparedness for the extreme physical and mental demands of firefighting operations in high-rise and standpipe equipped buildings. Armed with firefighting weapons that would be much more appropriate at a car fire, far too many fire departments are on a collision course with disaster and tragedy, should they encounter a serious high-rise fire. Countless false alarms, along with good luck while relying on bad habits, have greatly exacerbated the deadly disease of complacency. District Chief McGrail draws from his 25 years of experience, along with the lessons learned from many other fire service professionals, to provide a foundation for success and safety during high-rise and standpipe operations. The words Everyone Comes Home are just words. The actions necessary to ensure that everyone does come home are based on a lifelong commitment to excellence, and the consistent application of good fireground habits. This book is a compilation of those good habits and the many lessons learned by a man who is truly passionate about firefighting and firefighter safety and survival.
Among the many valuable topics covered in this book are:
Standpipe system pressure regulating devices, pressure restricting devices and pressure reducing valves
Cautious and disciplined elevator use during high-rise operations
Elevator rescue operations
Proper engine company suppression selection, including techniques to operate more powerful firefighting weapons with limited manpower
Air support operations during high-rise emergencies, with or without an internal resource

Bible.......2007-03-10
This book is the bible of structural engineering of tall buildings. Every designer should read it and every time you want to design a tower, you should use it. Thanks for hectic effort Prof. Taranth provided to help the structural engineers.
A must source for structural engineers.......2003-04-12
This is a great analysis and design book in tall buildings. You will find plenty of examples and discussions. Although the book does not get deep into some of the advanced topics, it is still a great source for structural engineers.
Very Practical and Useful Book.......2001-12-07
It is a very practical book containg material which will be useful to those engaged in the design of tall buildings. The unique thing about this book is the fact Taranath has given details of many important tall buildings, which will guide us before choosing a framework for the new building. He also explains how a structural system can be chosen. It has numerous practical examples. The code clauses are clearly explained. The Design for Wind and Earthquake are given in a nice manner with reference to latest codes of practices. His explanations are very easy to understand. Lateral and gravity systems for steel, concrete and composite constructions are given with numerous drawings in seperate chapters. Analysis techniques are given in an easy to understand fashion with less mathematical complexity. Design methods are also given. Discussion on related items such as damping and cladding systems,Foundation design, seismic design of Diaphragm ,etc. are also included. The data on Structural quantities will be a boon to those who want to have a preliminary estimate of the building, they are going to design. In all, it is a book worth buying and will serve as a reference for a long time. With this book and a proper software, we can design any tall building with ease.

Customer Reviews:
Not directly applicable to US market.......2007-04-01
I was searching for a book regarding high-rise concrete construction and settled on this one. As I suspected, the information in this book does not represent how things are done in the US market. (NOTE: Bamboo scaffolding on page 305 and shirtless/shoeless workers on page 213). The portion of the 417 page book related to concrete frame construction is only 20 pages. The book is not entirely useless but covers all topics only very briefly.
Tall Buildings Construction.......2006-02-23
This book is fairly well written. I noticed a few typos / factual errors, but that tends to be true of a lot of technical books that are published nowadays. I think the technical content of the book has been worth the purchase price. The book covers a variety of general technical issues related to the construction of tall buildings, sometimes on difficult site conditions. A good overview of the subject. Tends to focus primarily on structural engineering issues, which as a structural engineer myself, I appreciate.
Book Description
Since the first skyscraper was erected a century ago, tall buildings have intrigued people everywhere. Today they are so commonplace that it is hard to imagine the modern landscape without them. But skyscrapers are more than relics of the 20th century; they have evolved, along with out technological, spatial and aesthetic needs, as the new urban landscape. Tall Buildings explores how the genre is being redefined for the 21st century, presenting a critical review of the current state of tall buildings, discussing structural inventions, programmatic innovations, and social and urbanistic implications. Twenty-six skyscrapers and highrise structures designed in the last decade around the world exemplify these concepts. Each project, fully illustrated, is accompanied by an explanatory text. Included are Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso in Malmo; Norman Foster and Ove Arup and Partners' Swiss Re Headquarters in London; Steven Holl and Robert Silman's 5th Avenue and 42nd Street Tower; Hans Hollein and Josef Janda's Monte Laa Towers; Arata Isozaki and Toshiko Kimura's JR Ueno Railway Station; Rem Koolhaas's CCTV Tower in Beijing; Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, Francisco Serrano and Alejandro Fierro's Los Arcos Bosques 1 in Mexico; Renzo Piano and Charles Thornton's New York Times Headquarters; Richard Rogers and Ove Arup and partners' HHR Tower in Korea; SOM's Jin Mao Tower; Dr. Kenneth Yeang and T.R. Hamzah's Elephant and Castle Eco-Tower; plus various World Trade Center proposals.

25 projects in photos and tech. drawings on glossy paper.......2005-09-06
25 selected, half realized and half not projects are very well depicted in this survey by excellent photos, renderings, plans, sections, site plans, models, sketches, details, hard line presentation drawings, etc. There is a balance between larger photos and more numerous tech. drawings. The book "Skyscrapers: The New Millennium" (ISBN: 3791323431) includes more projects, but fewer tech. drawings.

Book Description
The Detail in Building series is an essential source of contemporary data covering the key elements of building design that form the vocabulary of current architecture. Previous titles include Staircases, Soft Canopies, Glass Canopies, Columns, Cable Nets and Wind Towers, and a publication on Balconies is currently in preparation. Each is clearly analysed, both historically and in terms of recent examples by key practices around the world. The combination of building context, design aesthetics and technical solution, as revealed in the case studies, is highly informative as well as unique in a field where specific technical quality of design detailing is often insufficiently exposed by the superficial presentation of designs. Service Cores, the seventh title in the series, deals with the internal vertical cores of buildings: the parts that contain the elevators, elevator-shafts, lobbies, staircases, mechanical, electrical and IT riser ducts, toilets and other components necessary both for environmental servicing and to provide access to the building's useable spaces. Initially associated mainly with skyscrapers and science buildings, service cores are becoming equally essential in the design of other highly-serviced building types, from laboratories and high-tech buildings to hotels, shopping malls and stadiums. The author discusses the historical treatment and development of service cores, and provides an outline guide to the considerations required in their design. This is supported by a series of case studies, featuring mainly skyscraper buildings from all over the world by a range of architects of international renown.
