Book Description
Written in an engaging and informative style, Qualitative Methods in Social Work Research invites readers to embark on a journey of discovery to explore new forms of inquiry, including participant observation, intensive interviewing, and the use of documents and archival materials. This new text provides a practical "how-to" approach to learning qualitative methods tailored to the needs of social work students as well as established researchers who want to expand their knowledge of qualitative methodologies. Beginning with a description of the social science origins of the diverse family of qualitative methods, the author takes the reader through the basic stages of qualitative inquiry: choosing a topic and designing the study, entering the field of sampling, data collection, data management and analysis, and writing up the study. Strategies to enhance the rigor of a qualitative study and approaches to multimethod evaluation research are discussed as well. The book contains a number of features to enhance the practice of qualitative methods, including classroom and field exercises, a list of computer software programs for qualitative data analysis, and a recommended reading list of monographs by noted qualitative researchers. Special attention is given to the needs and concerns of the social work researcher, including a discussion of important distinctions between qualitative research and social work practice, the importance of researcher/respondent difference in ethnicity, gender, age, social class, and ethical issues associated with carrying out qualitative research methods. The epilogue offers suggestions for enhancing the inclusion of qualitative methods in social work research education. Though intended for social work students and researchers, this text is also useful for a wide audience of clinicians and professionals interested in the qualitative alternative to research.
Book Description
If you are about to start law school or are in your first year, this book would be a good companion. Now in the fourth edition, this text has helped thousand of folks become better law students and down the road, better lawyers.
Like other introductory books, it covers the basics: reading and briefing cases; preparing for class; outlining and study groups; taking exams. There are exercises so you can apply what you have learned. In addition to these essentials, the book focuses of what is often quite elusive: legal analysis; Why do courts follow precedent?; How are cases applied and distinguished?; How is ambiguous language interpreted? Legal analysis is the hidden ball of the first year, and with this book you will be well on your way.
There are chapters on legal writing (not necessarily boring or highfalutin') and on oral argument (not necessarily terrifying). These chapters will help in first year writing and Moot Court Programs. And, for those of you who aren't sure, there are chapters revealing the wide array of careers that will be open to you.
The book reads fast, well, and is often funny. That said, drawing on the work of philosophers, psychologists, and novelists, it takes you and your calling quite seriously, but never (not even once) pompously.
Customer Reviews:
good review.......2007-08-31
The University of Florida recommends reading this book before starting law school there. I read it and found if was a very good cohmprehensive review of what to expect. It makes the first few weeks of school seem a little less intense if you have an idea of what you're getting into.
Hope this helps and Go Gators!
Excellent book to help prep your mind........2007-08-28
Nothing will completely prepare you for the brain battery that is law school, but this book will help prepare you to the basic concepts and get you in the right frame of mind before you start Orientation. Get it. Read it. Then work hard at your classes and you'll do great.
Easy to read, but lacks content.......2007-05-15
This book covers a variety of subjects, introduces law school, gives a very basic introduction to note taking/exams, gives a few pointers on writing and generally eases someones worries if they are concerned about law school.
However, that is all it does. It does not contain anything you will actually need to know for law school. It will just make you feel less uneasy about it.
If you can rent it at your library for free, it is worth a browse, but it isn't worth actually buying if you want to actually learn something before or during law school.
This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound.......2006-08-11
This book is humorous, insightful, and worthwhile.
Buy It, Borrow It, Just Get It........2006-05-19
The single best book that I have found which really does explain the study and practice of law, hence the title.

Sixty Second Motivator.......2007-09-19
This is a great little book. It is written in a light style that makes it easy to read and digest the principles that Jim spells out. If you have ever tried to make a change and been unsuccessful in accomplishing your goal this little book will help you to understand why you failed and how you can increase your chance of success. I found it to be helpful both with my own personal goals and in better understanding what may help to motivate my clients to achieve their stated goals.
It Really Works!.......2007-08-08
Forget the motivational seminars, DVDs, and CDs. This little book has more insights into motivation than anything else I have seen! No hype here.
The author has taken complex concepts and made them easy to understand in an entertaining way. I use the practical tips not only to motivate my patients, but also to motivate myself!
The Sixty-Second Motivator- Book Review.......2007-06-12
Both my husband and I enjoyed this book a lot. We found it to be a neat, well organized little book written in an easy-to-understand, straight-forward style that is genuinely enjoyable while at the same time providing valuable insights about why we do or do not do things. While we found it quite analytical about key factors concerning motivation, the book didn't make us feel intimidated or "preached at". The tone of the book came across to us as friendly, low-key, very helpful, analytical and a valuable "keeper" to refer to in life's future situations.
Excellent read!!.......2007-03-08
This is an excellent read and one book you will finish reading. They say that most poeople don't finish books they buy, but this one is soo relevant to our lives that you will want to read it cover to cover several times! Keeping it in my day planner for a random quick read infusion throughout the day helps keep me on track!!
The missing link!.......2006-09-19
Having read Jim Johnson's No Beach No Zone weight loss book, I knew WHAT to do, plain and simple, and WHY it was important. So why wasn't I doing what the book laid out as a proven plan for weight loss? It's all about motivation. There's even a chapter on motivation in his weight loss book - but this book takes it one step further, into the science of motivation. Personally I think both books dovetail into one another well, especially if your lack of motivation happens to be in the field of losing weight. The science of how to lose weight permanently, and the science of motivating yourself to do anything. Once again, this is all based on research and not what one guy thinks.
One of the best surprises about this book is the way it is written. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this book is more of a story than a collection of facts, and reads almost like a mystery. One thing's for sure, it's extremely engaging. I read the whole think in one sitting; the research and strategy don't take volumes to explain or lay out. I'm not one to read huge volumes, and Jim Johnson always makes a concise read devoid of medical mumbo-jumbo. The actual motivation chart takes up one page and really makes you think about what makes your own self "tick". The only excuse for not getting motivated is if you aren't willing to give up one hour of your time, and a little more time spent thinking straight.

Customer Reviews:
Adequate & Annoying.......2004-03-03
The authors' explanation of the workings of the Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc systems is adequate but is not particularly well written and often lacks clarity. This is certainly not one of NOLO's best offerings.
Especially annoying was the authors' frequent and tedious editorializing. I suspect most readers of this book want the facts, not the authors' socialistic, simplistic opinions.
Significant error in VA section.......2002-08-17
page 10/7: "E. Medical Treatment....And dependents and survisors of a veteran who has a service connected disabilities, or who receives a veterans pension, are entitled to care in VA facilities if they are unable to afford private care."
I have been a VA employee for 16 years. The above is WRONG. There IS a pilot program in a handful of VA hospitals allowing dependents to use the VA hospital. Otherwise, this is NOT the case.
..."The VA can also pay for long-term care of an elderly or disabled veteran in a private nursing facility if there is no space in a VA facility."
This is also not entirely correct. The operative would is CAN. However, the VA is only obligated to pay for the care of veterans who have a certain percentage of Service-Connected Disability. If they pay at all for any others, most VA's only pay for care for a VERY limited period of time.
Could reading about federal regulations be entertaining?.......2001-05-04
The authors of this comprehensive guidebook come close to achieving this feat. As they point out, many Americans are not receiving all the benefits they deserve under our current system. By explaining the various benefit programs and laws in conversational English, they hope to help readers ensure they are getting everything to which they are entitled. It's also helpful that the text is presented in a visually interesting two-column format with plenty of headings, boxes, and even the occasional illustration.
Each chapter explains a different benefit program or set of laws designed to protect the rights of older Americans. Security and Medicare take up more than half the book. The discussions of Medicare claims and appeal procedures are particularly thorough, complete with samples of Medicare summary notices explaining what the sometimes confusing columns of numbers mean. There also are chapters on Medigap policies, Veterans benefits, private pensions and 401(k) plans, and federal civil service retirement benefits. However, if you're looking for in-depth information on Medicaid coverage of nursing home costs, this is not your best resource. While Medicaid's basic eligibility rules are briefly discussed, the complexities of transferring assets to qualify for Medicaid benefits are not.
The authors mainly stick to the facts, but every once in a while they reveal their view of our society's tattered safety net. For example, they call our failure to enact a comprehensive, universal health care plan a "national disgrace."
Great summary of the Social Security system!.......1999-08-04
This happens to be the best all-around book concerning the difficult subject of Social Security that I have read. Understandable and very well written. The sections regarding disability are filled with just the info I needed to know.
Book Description

Anyone looking for a comprehensive introduction to the study of family violence.
Customer Reviews:
Family Violence.......2007-08-04
I really found this book helpful and full of information. I used it for a class that I was taking called family violence and abuse. Wallace does an excellent job outlining indicators of child abuse and he also provides different catergories of abuse such as elder abuse and alternative life style abuse. I often find myself struggling to use books assigned to each class because sometimes they are just not useful. I have spent lots of money on class texts that I have not opened once. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH THIS BOOK. IT WAS VERY USEFUL.
Superb!!!.......1998-11-21
Harvey Wallace's text book, which is being used in my Seminar:Domestic Violence Course, is a wonderful source of information about all types of domestic abuse. The extensive coverage on the many forms of child abuse is an excellent source of information for all careers, especially social workers, teachers, school psychologists, and future or current parents. I am also very glad to see that Wallace includes Elder Abuse and Gay and Lesbian Abuse in his book, types of domestic violence which often go overlooked.

Customer Reviews:
Not So "Great".......2004-12-27
I was excited at the prospect of the author updating his earlier works, especially the "Badmen and Bloodletters" series. What I saw was a shock. To begin with, did anyone edit this before it was printed? There are pictures with incomplete captions, misspelled names, incorrect names. A lot of what appears was lifted directly from those earlier Nash books without any updates or editing. Thus, I was shocked to see the continued use of the offensive word "Negro" in Nash's narratives.
In some cases, Nash covers old ground from his previous work. For example, although he goes into greater detail on the William Heirens case, he ignores recent information that casts doubt on Heirens's connection to the infamous lipstick message. Allegations that some of the evidence that put Heirens away aren't new, and I was surprised that Nash didn't cover them, especially with his connections to the Chicago area where Heirens operated.
Although I can accept using motion picture "stills" to illustrate historical figures when actual photos aren't available, this tactic was over-used.
Finally, Nash uses the book to attack authors and others who displease him. He repeats his grievances against Ann Rule, for example, in connection with her work on Ted Bundy. That was, again, just copied from his other books. However, he adds a diatribe against Bill Kurtis, a fellow Chicagoan and well-known "true crime" television host. The passion with which he attacks Kurtis is puzzling.
Few know crime history as well as Jay Robert Nash, but this book doesn't do justice to his talents and knowledge.
With a true crime bibliography of more than 12,000 entries.......2004-06-06
The result of ten years of painstaking research which has subsequently been distilled into a two-volume work of seminal importance by compiler and editor Jay Robert Nash, The Great Pictorial History Of World Crime offers a vividly narrative text of profiling the faces of crime around the world and is enhanced with more than 2,500 illustrations, an annotated index of approximately 10,000 entries, and a true crime bibliography of more than 12,000 entries. Alphabetically organized, Volume I ranges from Assassination; Bigamy; Burglary; Cannibalism; and Drugs, to Fraud, Gangs, Gangsters & Organized Crime; and Kidnapping. Volume II ranges from Celebrity Slayings; Mass Murder; Serial Killers; Unsolved Homicides; Piracy; Robbery; Secret Criminal Societies; and Terrorism. Drawing from local, national, and international archives, police and intelligence agencies, museums and historical societies, as well as Nash's own vast private collection, The Great Pictorial History Of World Crime is quite justifiably recognized as the standard reference work in the very specialized field of historical research dedicated to crime and the criminal. This is a unique and strongly recommended acquisition for personal, academic and community library World History and Criminology Studies reference collections.
