Review of Fiance & Marriage Visas by I. M. Bray.......2007-09-19
This book is very clear and concise in explaining everything I need to do in order to get my husband to the U.S. I was getting and hearing so many different "stories" so this is the most helpful thing I've found. Very highly recommend it! I especially love the fact that it is always up to date...
Good Advice and easy to follow - unlike a lawyer!.......2007-08-08
DO NOT BELIEVE THE REVIEW BY SUSANNA I. BOGUE. She states that the book tells people to file the I 130 first THEN later file the adjustment of status form - this is UNTRUE, and if she had actually read the book (as I have) she would see on Pg.257 it clearly states to file the I 130 and Adjustment Status forms together. This is just another lawyer trying to scare people who are navigating the path through immigration that they NEED to fork over thousands of dollars to a lawyer, when the filing fees are sometimes too much for people to pay. I have a couple of these immigration books by this author and they all cut through the legalized mumbo jumbo and put things in simple English. Of COURSE things change EVERY DAY with immigration, which is why the author constantly advises readers to check the immigration website for changes in fees and forms etc. This is a great book to help you understand immigration procedures and requirements. And with copes of necessary forms which show you exactly how to fill them out you would be hard pressed to go wrong! The book tries to cover issues for everyone - both people who are here legally and illegally, the author even recomends people who think they may have some difficulties in their case to seek the assistance of a lawyer.... but if you have kept within the laws immigration provides throughout your stays in the US this book will be a very useful tool for you!
General guide.......2007-06-08
I was interested in this book because I will marry a US citizen next year and I wanted to be informed about the different options to apply for residency. The book does a good job of informing the options for different scenarios: living in the US vs. living overseas, applying in the US vs. applying overseas, having a legal status vs. entered the US illegally, etc. Each chapter explains each of these cases, provides details about the forms, and gives instructions on how to complete them.
On some of these instructions on how to complete forms, however, the author describes the answer to certain questions as "self-explanatory" when they are not necessarily that obvious. Also, some sections are the same in several chapters (and the reader will be indeed directed to a further chapter) but some of the instructions on how to complete the forms, the number of copies required, the color of the paper to use for each copy will be different in one chapter and another. As a word of advice, always check the USCIS website and get the latest forms and fees from them.
On the positive side, the book contains tear out checklists at the end that come handy when putting all the paperwork together. On the downside, I wish the book would cover more extensively the case of persons already in the US. For example, if you have a J visa, or an OPT work permit, or a H1 visa, what are the rules for people in those cases? They only mention that while in the US and not having "overstayed" your visa for more than 180 days its ok to apply for an adjustment of status, but what are the legal implications? Does applying for a change of status cancels any other visas? Does employment has to be interrupted or cancelled? Is it mandatory to apply for the work permit while the paperwork of the green card is being reviewed in order to work, or if other visa is current can the applicant keep that until receiving the resolution of the application?
As you can see, there are still many unsolved questions, but I guess for cases that are more general is an OK source of info.
A great and useful book.......2007-05-15
A must for anyone who is trying to emigrate to the US because you've gone and fallen for an American! The process is hard and complicated and this book makes such a difference. I couldn't have survived without it.
Very informative and easy to follow.......2006-08-01
This book is an absolute life saver for those trying to muddle through the United State's fiance/spouse visa process. It include step-by-step and line-by-line instructions on all of the forms and tries to answer any questions you might have. It also includes checklists in the back for each visa process.

- Is interested in living permanently in the U.S.
- Is a friend or relative of someone who wishes to live permanently in the U.S.
- Wants to become a naturalized citizen
- Has no legal background or any familiarity with U.S. immigration
This book helps you discover the important requirements you need to meet and offers tips and insights into dealing with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS). - Clear information on the immigration process
- Up-to-date information on various application forms
- The rights of legal aliens
- Recent changes in immigration laws
- Review of English and Civics tests
- Pointers on the interview process
- Survey of U.S. history, government, and culture
- Coverage on visas and green cards
- Troubleshooting immigration problems
Becoming a U.S. citizen carries important duties and responsibilities as well as rights, rewards, and privileges. Before you make the decision to pursue U.S. citizenship, you need to be aware of what you stand to lose and what you stand to gain; you also need to be sure you’re ready to fulfill all the obligations of a good citizen. U.S. Citizenship For Dummies will help you understand all that it means to become a citizen of the United States of America.

Good book but not needed.......2007-05-16
I read this book for US citizenship. I found it very lucid and to the point. If you are interested in knowing US history in a concise manner this book will not dissappoint you. However if you intend to read this book just for passing US citizenship exam then the flashcards on the website of USDOJ are enough and I don't recall anybody being asked any other question apart from them. Goodluck!
US Citizenship for Dummies, by Cheri Sicard.......2007-04-10
Not as thorough as I'd hoped. I've had to seek other references as well (Bill of Rights, Constitution, Representatives, application for citizenship--N400).
Would have 5 stars if it were not outdated.......2006-07-27
This book is very good and very agreeable to read and learn the topics. Simple plain English and fun to read.
Took one star out because the edition I received is 3 years old.
Nonetheless, a very good book.
Just passed the Citizenship interview and test, and frankly I think I would have succeeded with only the flash cards I downloaded from the USCIS site. But then again, maybe I was simply lucky and got an easy test :)
US Citizenship for Dummies.......2005-08-13
My wife ordered this book for herself after checking out several different books that her friends were using. This book is the most complete in terms of the information available under one cover -- it also proves easy to understand and utilize for someone who has learned English as their second language.

It's rarely easy to deal with federal bureaucracy, but few tasks are as complicated and fraught with potentially irreparable errors as attempting to immigrate to the United States. If immigrating isn't a matter of life or death, that is, if you have a few days or weeks to do the research that will significantly improve your chances of getting what you want, Allan Wernick's U.S. Immigration & Citizenship is the place to start. Wernick is a professor, lawyer, and immigration-law expert, and his readable chapters will tell you what might help, or hurt, your application, how to obtain and extend a visa, and what you have to gain, or lose, by applying for citizenship. It also addresses the needs of employers, telling them how to stay out of trouble with the law, and highlights new Web pages that cover the ever-changing rules and links concerning immigration.
Section I is all about getting a green card. It discusses family-based visas and permanent residence based on work, talent, or investment, as well as lottery green cards, whether lawyers help your lottery chances, and what INS risks might be involved in entering the lottery. Wernick further covers potential obstacles to permanent residence, and how best to go about the immigrant-visa application process. Section II takes the next step, launching into naturalization and citizenship. Wernick writes about the risks of pursuing naturalization, its requirements (physical presence, good moral character, English competence, etc.), and how to go about applying. Other sections go into nonimmigrant visas (student visas, temporary professional workers', and the like), refugee and asylum rules, and employer sanctions, with attention to both employer obligations and employee rights.
The guide is full of case histories that help illustrate and personalize the rules, and it's enhanced with practical appendices loaded with resource agencies, state-by-state addresses, Web sites, and e-mail addresses, plus a list of 100 questions posed by INS naturalization examiners, and the answers they expect. --Stephanie Gold

don't know where to start? get this book first.......2005-11-15
I'd recommend this book to anyone who's about to file an immigration petition or need a crash course in the complex immigration law. When I worked on my first petition to adjust status, I used multiple dictionaries and needed a legal advice (and had to take the day off to recover). The language of the INS forms is hardly comprehensible to a native speaker and now imagine somebody with only a basic understanding of the language trying to wade through the lingo of the INS forms -- a nightmare. Well, I got smart and bought Wernick's book for my next petitions and I was able to do it all by myself. Now, I am often checking for updates to the book on Prof. Wernick's
website and his new
blog .
good, basic overview of immigration and naturalization law.......2001-08-01
This book provides a good, solid overview of immigration law. It is not an overly-detailed guide that addresses every possible nuance of immigration law. Rather, it discusses the basics, the terminology, the myriad avenues through which which a foreigner can gain legal residence in the US. This book would be a good starting point for someone wishing to immigrate to the United States, for an alien residing in the US who wishes to become a US citizen, or for an employer seeking to bring immigrants into its work force. There are many anecdotal examples, which make the book easy to read. This book may not answer all of your questions within its pages, but it will give you enough background information so that you know how to ask the right targeted questions of the INS or an immigration lawyer.
Informative and easy to read.......2001-01-28
This 2nd edition would appear to reflect INS rule and fee changes in the last couple of years. The book covers all facets of immigrating to the United States from the different categories of VISAs to Permanent Residence and Naturalization. It is somewhat like a condensed version of INS law written in plain English. For clarity, the author backs up every major point pertaining to a given aspect of immigration/naturalization procedures and rules with a real-life example. The less one knows about immigration/naturalization laws, the more helpful this book will be. Conversely, if one is familiar with INS procedures and is looking for specific information above and beyond the basics, chances are it won't be found here. However, the book contains a section listing many helpful websites covering immigration law and policy.
Concise and indispensable.......2000-12-21
Help with one of the most complex issues many people have in dealing with our government is always needed. When that help comes from a well respected source in an easy to follow style it is a godsend. I can't even explain how many hours this book saved me.
Immigration review.......2000-01-05
Good book, but almost no help with the appeal process. Should tell you how to appeal, who to talk to to do it, do you need a lawyer etc? But almost nothing about that very important area. Also nothing on how to request a deportation hearing, and/or what to say/do when you are in it.

I bought the 2nd edition ( ISBN:0973455187 ) of this book. I really love it, especially the step-by-step sequence of it. I would say that even I do have the broadband internet connection but if I would be searching for the information that I have found in this book, It would have cost me at least $1000/- worth my time. If you are looking to migrate to Canada then this book will be a smart start that can save you $$$$$ and time.
if you've got access to the internet............2006-02-13
I wish I'd read more of the reviews before I bought this book.. There is one review (Reviewer: Raj. April 20, 2005) that explains that this is just a copy of what available at the Canadian immigration web site... and that's what it is. There is NOTHING in this book that is not available at the www site... DON'T waste your money!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Good overview.......2002-02-19
This book is a good overview of all USA visas available to the prospective immigrant. Doesn't bog the reader down with too much detail, but it is good for a first look at how a person might be able to live and work in the USA. Also has some useful case studies to clarify certain points and allows reader to make a good comparison between routes into the US.
Good overview, but short on specifics for me.......2000-04-06
This is a good introduction to the topic of immigration to the United States, but it didn't provide enough depth for me. I think this is a limitation of the subject matter, more than just this book. Immigration issues are so broad-ranging that it would be impossible to cover them all in a short book. Specifically I was looking for details on TN visas; they're covered, but not enough for me. This would be a good book to use as a jumping-off point to find further information.
That is a very good book........1999-08-19
I am currently researching ways to get a work permit in the U.S.A. There is a lot of "common wisdom" around about the subject, but no one seems to know the precise facts. You need this book to know about this. Don't let the low price put you off, it's complete and - as far as I can tell - the author is a real expert on the subject.
