Shame on you Adam for passing this off as an informative guide. If you want to waste your money like I did, buy this book. AmberBamber has said it all. I should have watched the reviews more closely. I will not even try to resell this so called "book". I have already thrown it in the trash, and at this moment it is taking up valuable space in the landfill. Shame, Shame, Shame on you Adam Ginsberg.

5 out of 5 stars Great eBay book.......2007-06-14

a Gotta Have book if you are planning on starting an eBay business in your home in 30 days. Great reference for the experienced eBayer.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2007-06-08

This book is one big fat advertisement for Ebay and for Adam Ginsberg's other ventures. It had very little useful information, and NO information that cannot be found easily on-line or on Ebay itself. It was a waste of my time reading it. It was utterly repetitive and took forever to actually get to any sort of information or advice. There is hardly enough information in this book to fill a 10 page pamphlet...let alone a 300 page book!!! I'm just happy I got it from the library and didn't end up wasting my money as well as my time.

I wish there was actually a book out there to help people who are not complete ebay beginners. The biggest ebay woe is finding sources for products, and there is little help in this book....OH, unless you want to go to the website Adam plugs and buy more stuff from him. SURE, then he'll help you out. HA, RIGHT!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad but............2007-03-27

This book is not bad. It is good for the basics of how to buy and sell on Ebay, if you have never done it, but if you have already been doing business on Ebay, its more of a review than revelation. There are a lot of great little 'tid-bits' of information and the writing style is entertaining, but nothing really eye opening or anything that makes you say hum....It talks about doing your homework and how to to post listings, the rules of ebay but a lot of this is posted on the Ebay site itself. If you are a total novice by all means pick it up, but if you have done a few deals on Ebay and pretty much know your way around you may want to skip this one.

Book Description

At some point in most careers one considers the idea of starting a business. Some people want to pursue a dream, some figure they can beat the boss at his or her own game, and for some people unemployment forces the issue. US Customs tells us most international traders are small businesses, and world trade continues to grow rapidly. Given the improvements in transportation and communication worldwide, inevitably now small business in USA has some international component...some more than others. Surely there is no safer investment for your time and money than self-employment. Surprisingly, for many who start their own businesses, making money is not always the prime motivator. Nonetheless, recent studies provide some remarkable information about self-employment: 80% of the millionaires in USA became so in their own career - 2/3rds are self-employed; the self-employed are four times more likely to be millionaires than others. It seems the most common career move in becoming rich is to become self-employed. This book now shows you how to build a business and takes you through the steps so you will know you can do it, and is structured so you may take positive steps after each chapter toward building your business. Surely you will finish the book before your business gets started, but by the time you finish the book, not only should you feel "ready to go", but actually be on your way. World trade is different from the domestic variety, and small is different from large business. Small Business International Trade has some specific challenges which this book illumines and solves. Starting a business is necessarily disruptive... but to what extent? Like the tennis pro who shows you how to get great improvement out of small changes, book assumes you can stand minimal disruption and risk. For those who desire to engage directly in world trade, and for those who are hired to do so, this book explains how small business trades worldwide.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is one you must read.......2007-07-19

I purchased this book and then ended up enrolling in one of John Spiers' classes on world trade. I can not say enough good about this book and John Speirs' approach to small business. After researching many other books, courses and programs, that seemed to be nothing more than marketing schemes designed to get you to purchase some "must have" resource for an import/export business. While reading this book I feel as if I have a mentor teaching me step by step the way to succeed in small business world trade. His approach is clear and concise. The book is easy to read because it is so well written. I feel that this book has changed my thinking and strategy and has probably saved me from making fatal business mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, straightforward and thorough.......2007-05-10

Thanks very much for your book. It has certainly saved me a lot of mistakes, time and money. The book is concise, well written with lots of practical information on getting your product from conception to market. More than just a basic 'importing 101' book, it includes insights and information that could only be otherwise obtained by years of hands-on experience.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic step-by-step book.......2007-05-08

I picked up this book about a month ago and I just have to say that it's absolutely fantastic. I've been looking high and low for this book and I couldn't find it anywhere until now. Most books just reiterate information you'd typically find in some weekend trading class at a local community college.

The difference between this book and other books I've read is that this book actually gives you practical advice for small businesses. It beautifully outlines the steps you need to develop your own products from start to finish. Economies of scale for most products make it almost impossible for small business owners to compete for market share. Instead, the book focuses on innovation which is a more viable option for most people.

This book has really inspired me to pursue my product and I feel more confident now than with any other book. Thanks for an awesome and informative read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-04-10

Spiers gets straight to the point. Lots of good, useful help for anyone just starting out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent business book!.......2007-03-24

John Spiers has produced a top-notch product with this book! I am very wary of accepting advice from those who tell you "how-to-do-it." Most of the time, you end up getting "advice" from some phony who has never really done it, but instead has made all his money on the books and materials claiming he has! John Spiers really HAS done it, and he's done it for over 20 years. The beauty in this book is the simplicity in which he walks the prospective trader through the process, step-by-step, of starting an importing firm. Mr. Spiers also uses his gifts of wit and humor so the reader actually enjoys the learning process, from beginning to end. This book lays out a totally different plan as to how trade is actually carried out by the small firm compared to the rest of the books out there. He gives plenty of suggestions to avoid the traps encountered by countless other wanna-be traders, ensuring you don't become one of them. To echo other reviewers of this book, the recommendations given by John are useful to anyone starting any kind of business. If you're serious about starting a trading firm or even just thinking about it, your $20 will be well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-09-29

Just getting into the book selling biz. I have been going through cancer and now need a job where I can tailor my hours around all of my doctor's appointments. I like both this book and the Stephen Windwalker books. Very good information without alot of extraneous stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-25

This a great book to help those interested in selling books online. It is very bold of Mr. Weber to enpower the competition. But it is a very smart book that will help those motivated to help themselves. I recommend it to all interested in getting online selling books.

4 out of 5 stars The Home-Based Book Store.......2007-09-17

Very good book for the person who is contemplating entering this type of business. Seemed to cover most of the bases. If he didn't and I do actually go into business, I guess I'll find out pretty quickly. But, overall, since I've read a few other books dealing with this topic, I feel the author covered the subject matter well and I would recommend the book to others.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-08-27

This is a fantastic book chock full of information. I've already started using some of his suggestions and am looking forward to having my own online used book store.

It would be a tremendous book to have BEFORE you set up your business. I think this would be helpful for anyone at any level that is selling books on the internet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for DUMMY Books........2007-02-26

Well organized as usual with a Dummy Book. Easy to find answers to questions. Love the idea list for home businesses. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Be Your Own Boss!.......2006-01-01

I would classify this book as more of a general overview of all the important things you need to consider before actually starting your business. For particulars you will definitely want to contact a good business attorney and a good accountant. Not to mention, you'll need to interface a lot initially with your local city/state governments to get tax forms and your business license.

This book seems to work best if you already have an idea for your business. Granted , they do throw out a few ideas for things like medical billing and place an emphasis on what could be described as services geared towards either elderly folks, or dual income families who are too busy to deal with traditional family type things. If you already kind of know what you think you want to try, this book will primarily help you fine tune your thoughts, and bring them to reality.

The section on Managing Money is probably one of the best things anyone can read. Obviously, if you're in business, the goal is to make money. By understanding the basic accounting principles presented in Part II of the book, you'll be well on your way to managing your business money wisely.

For general knowledge, my favorite part of the book was Part V. Here you will find Top 10 lists that describe common myths and pitfalls, and even success producing ideas to help you on your journey as a home based business owner. If you have a family, you'll want to take note on the section about what I would call, "The good way to set up your office." Which means, keeping distractions from the spouse and kids to a minimum while you are working at home.

There is a section on marketing, but in lieu of just that section alone, I would definitely recommend "Guerilla Marketing" by Jay Conrad Levinson. It's a very dry read, but there are a lot of interesting and unique ideas for getting word out about your business with out spending much (if any) money. And when you're in business for yourself, the more advertising you can get for free, the better!

I really like the way the authors describe how to get in to the home based business. Meaning, the idea of working at your full-time job (which you may or may not like) while you test the waters with your own venture on the side. That's excellent advice because if your business idea doesn't take off, you're not stuck without any income. Plus you can stay under your current employer's medical plan (A HUGE money saver!)

Overall there is so much information in here, it will be hard to take it in all at once. Likewise, as I stated earlier, the most important thing to remember is make sure and check with a professional accountant and lawyer in your area before/as you get started so they can help walk you through the particulars in your area. Every city and state is different in terms of setting up a business when it comes to taxes and getting your license.

Bottom line is, if you are semi-seriously considering starting a home based business, do yourself a favor and pick up this book and read it through. You'll get some good advice and knowledge on what it takes to be your own boss. Of course the other thing you can do is, talk to other small business owners in your area. Take them to lunch and learn as much as you can from those who are successful small business owners.

I think this book is great, concise, and entertaining. It is just what I was wanting to know.

5 out of 5 stars The obvious choice for anyone starting a home based business.......2005-06-22

Paul Edwards shares his great knowledge in yet another book to help anyone start thier own business. This book will answer every question you can come up with and answer it in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. This is why it will help you to become successful. I highly recommend this book, it has great tips, information and ideas to help you start and run your own home based business successfully.

3 out of 5 stars Another home-base business book from the Edwards.......2005-03-18

Working at home seems like a dream for many. The Edwards have written several books on working on home. Their advice is sound and filled with common sense. However, this book does not rate a 5 because it is lacking in details about individual businesses you can start at home. They do have other home businesses books, as I stated. These are filled with 3-5 pages at the most on some individual businesses, but does not go too far into details about each, obviously. But for an overview of starting a home-based business at all, this is a decent book.

While I was a bit skeptical about making such a purchase, thinking it was only going to be a reiteration of common sense, this book totally surprised me. It contains tips on just about anything a person considering starting their own business might wonder about and need to know from what type of name to use, to how to organize the business legally to how to best design business cards. I'm extremely impressed!

This is a great buy!

If you are considering starting your own business, you probably already know that there is great opportunity for those who manage lay the proper ground work. Rieva has done an excellent job with this book. However, as one of my developer clients once said "Sometimes the best way to make money building a new building is to start with a great deal on an old building. Buy Rieva's Book. Do your homework. Look to see if you can reduce your start up cost with a well designed acquisition. And don't rule out getting a great deal on a business (or some of its assets) from a Chapter 11. Get a copy of Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers.

5 out of 5 stars It helping a novice!.......2007-06-27

Now I've taken a few business courses in college (accounting 101, Micro and Macro Economics, Statistics, etc), but I knew that starting a business would take some extra knowledge.

This book was an excellent reference for me. My particular business didn't fit the normal idea of a business, but the book still helped me explore both the direction that I wanted to go and the direction I wasn't going; just to make sure that I considered what I was doing in an objective manner.

I really appreciated this book in starting up my business, and it will surely get used as my business grows.

I liked how many different chapters there were, because it helped me to easily find answers to my questions.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough, through and through........2007-05-19

This book is really thorough. I started my quest for information with the Dummies Retail Business Kit. That book was also really helpful, and a great introduction. I found Start Your Own Business to be a lot more informative and helpful than the Business Kit book, but I worry that if I had started with it, I would have been initially overwhelmed. There is a LOT of information. Unfortunately I still need more information that is specifically geared to the retail business, as this book is more broad. But VERY helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for..........2007-08-05

I read this book looking for ideas to help supplement by regular income by doing something from home. This was NOT the book for me. Most of the suggestions were totally useless for me and required a lot of skills/education that I don't have and would have to obtain before I started. For example, two of the suggestions are Accountant and Lawyer (!). This would better have been titled as "Careers That Allow You To Work At Home If You Want To." Also, as a side note, the projected earnings about Medical Transcriptionist was WAY overinflated...I am doing that currently, and my mother owns her own business and makes really good money, but not the $40-$60 an hour stated in the book. That's outrageous!

5 out of 5 stars 200 Best Home Businesses My Review.......2007-02-06

I loved this book, granted you could really think of many of these ideas yourself, but truly not everyone is savvy on the internet to research. 3 out of 5 stars Home Business Review.......2007-01-19

I enjoyed looking at the various options, however some "home Business'" were really not logical. However even, this book does stimulate the mind, and gets you thinking about what talents you have that you could put to use as a home business.

The author mentions many different alternatives for supplementing
income. These alternatives include review of utility bills for
large entities. The rendering of expert advice is another potential
business. The author mentions concert promotion, consulting
engineering, eBook Publishing, freelance writing, graphic design,
rare book dealerships and seminar services. This acquisition would
help anyone seeking to supplement their current income. It could
be useful for retirees and others on a fixed income.

    4 out of 5 stars A very refreshing book.......2006-07-07

I picked up this book not knowing what to expect and I was very surprised to find a new type of approach.
The author has done a wonderful at holding my attention and I highly recommend it.
I'd also like to recommend that you read Untapped Wealth Discovered. This too is a very smart and refreshing book and the authors have packed lots of vital info into their book.
Both of these books are well priced, very affordable and great motivators for both the interested and serious reader.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14

Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!

    5 out of 5 stars Exellent Book.......2007-05-11

Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

3 out of 5 stars Vague on Medical Claims Billing/Transcription, but valuable for starting a business in general........2006-09-08

After much anticipation, I received my Start Your Own Medical Claims and Transcription Business book; however, I was sort of disappointed. The aspects of starting a business was outlined beautifully, but what this book was missing was the information that was stated on the title. There are little references throughout the book that go into some detail about medical claims and transcription, but failed to go into any major detail. The money that I spent was not a total loss, there were some very good points in the book. For the money, it is worth it, but do not think that after reading it that you will be ready to quit your day job and start your own.

5 out of 5 stars On my way to self employment.......2006-02-25

This book was just the thing I needed. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who is considering a business venture of their own. It was so helpful.

It is bulleted for you to be able to do a step by step so that you dont get lost or confused when starting your business. It is informative, uplifting, it motivated me, it gave me the incentive and it gave me the courage to know I could do it.

So far Im moving forward and by summer will be employed for ME! MYSELF! and I!

I have dreamed of being a business owner and yes it is happening. Not all the credit goes to the book because you have to have the will and the desire to go after this and you have to really want it, but the book has taken all of that and made it possible. Im very happy with this purchase and can say that if you are thinking about being your own boss. This will be the best investment you make.

3 out of 5 stars Good outline for billing business.......2005-10-24

This book is a good general outline and business reference for anyone considering starting a business. The book focuses on sound general business information applicable to any business and it's owner. What to do and how to market a business, the tasks and research involved. The old adage of fail to plan - plan to fail, comes to mind. The book also has more information for transcription than claims (I think claims was an afterthought), but it discusses process for medical billing and some resources and references that may prove useful. A good general reference book for a claims biller or transcriptionist. However, this book will not give you the training or experience you will need to bill medical claims confidently.

2 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough.......2005-02-13

As founder and developer of a unique medical transcription company, EchoScribe Inc, I know what it takes to start a transcription company. This book comes short intoo many places. Details are lacking and not for the beginner nor the advanced transcriptionists that wants to start their own company. In fact, come to our website directly to see how we may help you start your own company. Our careers section www.echoscribe.com/careers.asp has many interesting options.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-03-09

I've read and re-read Bewsey's book, Start and Run a Home Cleaning Business and she's done a fabulous job. There are lots of ideas for people generally in business for themselves working out of their homes. She has great goal-setting questions and really tries to focus the reader on thinking, not just about cleaning homes, but providing a service that clients will call upon again and again. Bewsey has wonderful customer service ideas, marketing and pricing your service. She's done a great job and this book has already become a very usable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to get you started..........2006-11-02

This book got me started and is wonderful! For even more information check out the global cleaning association site and housecleaning pro site also google Suze and Ev. I've read it all and these are the best I've found!

5 out of 5 stars Well Written - Very Helpful.......2006-09-06

This book is very well written and an excellent guide if the reader is looking to build a successful, profitable home cleaning business. Susan Bewsey does a good job of outlining the steps you need to take to get this business off the ground, and to maintain the business. She also gives a good general idea of what all the business involves. As far as holding your hand to go get the license, bonding and insurance...no, she doesn't do that. But she does tell you what you need, and where and who to check with to obtain them, and to get more information on them. After all, different country's, states, and even city's requirements differ. If you're going to make it in a business of your own, you need to be able to do some things for yourself.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-05-21

The book is so basic - no details. For example, you would think it would go into the details of insurance - what the difference is between bonding and liability insurance and advise you as to which you need, and where to go for this, and how much to expect it to cost. Instead the book only says, "This Insurance is important protection" and will "offset the costs of major damages". Same with Licenses. It tells you that you need one - offers no advice as to how to go about getting one, if there are fees, etc. - zero details at all. I was very disappointed in this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-04-02

This is a good book, not too original or with the times though, times are changing fast. I would recommend augmenting it with the Suze and Ev method for starting a cleaning business, which is available online. Google it!

    5 out of 5 stars I've bought it twice!.......2007-05-07

I first bought this book as I considered opening a vintage goods shop with my mother. It was such a good resource, we each wanted our own copy. I found the information to be very useful as we mapped out our business plan and eventually opened our little shop.
The shop eventually closed when we had to give up our location, and cancer claimed Mom's life. I have been feeling the urge to have a shop again lately, and wanted to re-read the book. Apparently I've lent it to someone who never returned it to me! Mom's copy was nowhere to be found either, so I ordered another copy. A small price to pay for the information and guidance imparted within.

5 out of 5 stars Turning Your Passion Into Profits.......2006-02-01

I just found this charming, useful and inspirational book on sale at a local book store. This collaborated effort by a Victoria Magazine contributor and successful small business owners like Debby DuBay, retired United States Air Force officer, was absolutely inspirational and had so many useful tips for a new business owner such as myself. I found information on my business plan and the small business administration, etc. In addition, I tried to contact many of the contributors to the book, but most I could not contact. I boldly contacted Ms. DuBay who enthusiastically provided me with many helpful tips on my new business! I love this book and highly recommend it for all! It is a timeless book!

5 out of 5 stars Where is Victoria Magazine?.......2004-02-16

Written by the editors of Victoria Magazine who collaborated with successful women such as author, shop owner, retired Air Force Officer and Veteran Debby DuBay this book is a must. I have tried getting in contact with Victoria Magazine to no avail, but a few of the women they highlighted are still available to mentor women like myself. I am a professional woman who wanted to turn a passion into a career and Ms DuBay has been my mentor. Thanks to this book I was able to contact her. Highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational, educational, enjoyable!.......2004-01-22

Wow! If you need a guide on how to turn your passion into a profession - I recommend this book. The experts have been used to provide input, and I love Debby DuBay's story in this book and in The Business of Bliss. The information provided about the Small Business Association is the best and I received a low documentation loan following the outline in this book! I owe my success to Janet and Ms DuBay. Highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational, informational, must have book!.......2004-01-19

Purchased this book in Limoges Antiques Shop, Andover, MA from one of the contributors; Debby Dubay, ret, USAF and author of her own series on collecting Limoges porcelain. This book is remarkable and if you are considering starting your own business or turning your passion into a profession this book is a must. Debby DuBay credits The Business of Bliss and Victoria Magazine for her success - but her input was invaluable with the success of this publication.
