4 out of 5 stars Can't Wait for New Edition in December 2005 .......2005-10-21

Great book. As an educator, it was the best one on the market. It only lacks current data, but the new edition coming in a couple of months should take care of that.

3 out of 5 stars Safety and Health for Engineers.......2003-11-02

I just passed my ASP and this book was an excellent introductory text. While it is understood that many other reference have to be used, I recommend this book as one of the first you review.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea, but flawed execution.......2001-01-11

Although this text does cover a wide range of safety topics, it is somewhat dated and contains a farly large number of typos. Therefore, the reader has to be careful. The book needs to be updated and the typographical errors corrected. If that were to be done, it would definitely be a five star book.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for preparing for the CSP exam........1998-09-18

If you're going to purchase one book to prepare for the Certified safety Proferssional (CSP) exam this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I EVER read.......2002-12-04

This book was fascinating from the first page until the last. Mr.Kunen has a way with words that will grip the reader as he did me. The intimate details of the crash and the lives of the young victims will bring a tear to your eye. And how Ford Motors was defeated in the end will have you cheering in a bittersweet way. A masterpiece. I have read hundreds of books and this book tops my list to this day even though I first read it 6 years ago.

    4 out of 5 stars Reckless Disregard.......2002-01-01

I happen to know the grandparents (both sets) of one of the students killed in this crash. The book has a big impact on me, not only for the tragedy itself, but that it has a personal meaning also. I had a hardcopy of this book in the library in which I worked and now I want my own copy.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-03-12

My math teacher was on the bus when it crashed and allowed me to read one of his two copies of this book, 3 of his friends were killed and if it was n't for his other friend he would have died too for he was sitting 3 rows from the front and saw the youth director get blown up when the explosion occured.

5 out of 5 stars James Kunen did an exceptional job........1998-06-14

I had seen a road sign in Kentucky referring to a bus crash, but didn't know anything about it. One day I saw Mr. Kunen's book at a local bookstore and realized it was the same thing. When I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. Up until that day it was a road sign; afterwards it was a tragic memorial to the death of the innocent.

      Book Description

Shifting Out of Park: Moving Auto Safety from Recalls to Reason is an in-depth look at the automobile recall process. Vehicle safety and reliability is considered to be better than it has ever been, yet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) continues to issue as many as 30 million vehicle recalls per year. A paradox perhaps. This book discusses the history of the recall process and the reasons NHTSA devotes a high percentage of its attention to this matter, with more vehicles recalled than sold each year. Yet it administers this program in a costly and rather ineffective manner for all parties involved. First of all, compliance is difficult to enforce since up to a quarter of the recall notices, on vehicles, are not attended to by the owners. Second, the cost of recalls is very high in terms of cost per vehicle. NHTSA estimates that recalls cost automakers about $100 per vehicle per recall. But that's only part of the costs, namely, parts and labor. This estimate fails to consider costs such as engineering, tooling, and producing the replacement parts. Worse, it ignores indirect costs, which dwarf direct costs and include the loss of market capitalization, market share, and brand damage as a result of a recall. Third, there is a cost to those who do take their vehicles in to fix the recall. Having to fix the recall causes extra risk of accidents due to additional travel, loss of time and productivity due to bringing the vehicle to the dealer, and cost of fuel needed to make the additional trips.

It is possible that the recalls may risk more lives than they save. It is estimated that the additional travel, caused by owners fixing the recalls, causes three to four deaths a year, let alone many injury and non-injury causing accidents. The program is expensive in more ways than just monetarily, and the question of whether or not the safety benefits of the recall program outweigh the costs has been asked, but remains unanswered. The Federal Government refuses to study the issue and claims that the small number of actual facts and the large number of unknown factors make it next to impossible to evaluate the program.

With this book Dr. Kevin McDonald evaluates the recall process and starts a discussion on how it might be changed for the better. He discusses the three components of traffic safety in order of importance and how they contribute to automobile accidents: driver safety, roadway safety, and vehicle safety. He also discusses automobile regulation and the three steps that must occur for regulation to take place: public awareness and demand for action, legislation, and continuing administration. He unravels the legislation and litigation that started in 1966 with the creation of NHTSA and continues today, including an exhaustive analysis of the TREAD Act, passed in the wake of the Ford-Firestone recall. Separate chapters are devoted to how the courts have handled recall orders and the recent trend to have courts, not NHTSA, order recalls and how they affect the recall process. Dr. McDonald then compares the current American recall process and its history with the recall processes of several foreign countries with excellent auto safety histories. He gives suggestions for improvement that will allow the recall process to save money and better serve the American public. The book is clear and to the point and will serve as a descriptive resource for all parties, from judges and lawyers to auto designers and mechanics to concerned citizens, interested in traffic safety in America and the auto recall process.

Introduced in 1962, silicone breast implants had been used by between one and two million women by the time they were virtually banned in 1992 by David A. Kessler of the Food and Drug Administration. While the ban came about because manufacturers had failed to demonstrate the safety of the devices, Marcia Angell, executive editor of The New England Journal of Medicine, argues that there actually was no medical consensus to support the contention that implants could cause widespread illness. Science on Trial examines the silicone debate and argues for the reliance on scientific evidence "to curb the greed, fear and self-indulgence" of such disputes.

      Book Description

In the early 1990s, sympathetic juries awarded huge damages to women claiming injury from silicone breast implants, leading to a $4.25 billion class-action settlement that still wasn't large enough to cover all the claims. Shockingly, rigorous scientific studies of breast implants have now shown that there is no significant link between breast implants and disease. Why were the courts and the public so certain that breast implants were dangerous when medical researchers were not? The answer to this question reveals important differences in the way science, the law, and the public regard evidence--and not just in the breast implant controversy.

      4 out of 5 stars Science Triumphs.......2004-01-12

I read this book back in 1996 before the issue of implant safety was settled. I recall the impression it made on me with regard to the widespread ignorance that surrounds us, not only on specific scientific principles but also on the whole idea of the scientific method. This book illustrates why hypotheses and theories can never be evaluated by a court of law. It also illustrates why in any critical review of data one must have a control. If the incidence of a disorder is the same in a group getting implants as it is in a group that does not get implants then it is impossible to reasonably argue that there is any connection between implants and the disorder. Silicone is one of the most inert materials around and people are exposed to it all the time. I strongly recommend this book for anyone looking for further proof that our schools do not teach science adequately.

5 out of 5 stars Medical evidence vs court testimony vs belief.......2003-02-03

Please note that the more or less average "average ratings" come from reviewers who either rate this one star or four to five stars. In my opinion this illustrates the main point of the book, i.e. that people either evaluate things based on medical evidence, on the opinion of experts, or on their personal belief based on personal life experience/expectations. The different ways of evaluation produce conflicting perceptions, conflicting world views which we see played out many aspect of life. I think that Dr. Angell is gutsy to even take on an issue which generates tremendous controversy. I believe that she presents the arguments for medical evidence very well. Chapter 5 is the best brief and understandable description of what medical evidence is (and is not) that I have ever read. I recommend the book on that alone. I hope that some day Dr. Angell will update the book to include more recent research.

      1 out of 5 stars Biases Aplenty.......1999-12-16

For the true story behind implants, one's time is better spent reading John Byrne's "Informed Consent". He was in charge of Dow's "ethics" program and his wife also had implants. Contrary to what Dr. Angell writes in her book, there are many studies showing immunological responses to silicone oils (most recently a study by researchers at the FDA - June 1999). The Institute of Medicine in their recent report termed the FDA study "interesting", choosing to rely on previous, and seriously flawed, studies purporting to show no link between silicone and disease (the same studies quoted in Dr. Angell's book). One of the studies looked at women who had implants for only one month (!), which is as ludicrous as determing smoking doesn't cause cancer after studying a person who smoked for only a brief time. There are thousands of court documents proving fraud on the part of the implant manufacturers. Reading through them makes one realize how powerful corporations are and how the bottom line is far more important than the health and safety of the consumer. Breast implants (saline and silicone) have NEVER been approved for safety by the FDA. They only have pre-market approval, which means they can be on the market pending the manufacturers submission of safety data. To date, the manufacturers have been UNABLE to prove implants safe. Unfortunately, the medical community and the corporate community are oftentimes inextricably intertwined. Money is the motivator. When Dr. Angell speaks of greed, I'm sure that's at least one thing she knows a lot about.

      5 out of 5 stars Finally, a rational argument!.......1999-06-03

People have a tendency to let their emotions rule their mind, or in this case, their breasts. Luckily, this book chooses the mind.

        Book Description

Last year consumers spent $4.9 billion on infant products such as portable cribs, cradles, infant carriers and car seats. Today's parents, many of them older, dual income, and mobile, demand product features that fifteen years ago were unheard of: portable cribs that weigh only a few pounds and easily collapse for storage, car seats that double as infant carriers, tandem strollers for parents who jog. Products, it turns out, that are too often inadequately tested and ultimately unsafe. Marla Felcher's year long investigation has revealed case after case of infants and toddlers being seriously injured and killed by these products and case after case of manufacturers going to great lengths to cover this up. It's Not an Accident will expose the inner-workings of the infant products industry, highlighting the tactics used by corporate giants such as Hasboro (Playskool), Evenflo, Kolcraft, Cosco, Graco and Century Products to keep consumers in the dark about their safety records.

        5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2003-08-20

This impeccably reasearched and skillfully written analysis of the baby products industry is a "must read" for all--not only just parents and child care providers. As a collegiate professor, Department of Business and Management, University of Maryland University College, Europe, I've used it in classes to illustrate the principles of product liability, to raise business ethics issues, and to examine the machinery of federal regulation. Resulting discussions have lasted for hours, and rank among the most interesting that I've facilitated. Kudos to the author!

5 out of 5 stars A must for parents and educators.......2003-08-11

An intelligent and thorough analysis of an industry that has much to answer for in terms of business ethics. I highly recommend this book for parents, grandparents, and educators on all levels, particularly those teaching the intricacies of products liablility law and consumer {misinformation}. Felcher is an excellent writer and builds both compelling and heartbreaking arguments for legislative change. Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Consumer Movement.......2001-04-23

American families trust that the products our babies use, from strollers to cribs to swings, will keep them safe. Unfortunately, we found out the truth in the most terrible way. Our beloved son Danny was the fifth baby to die in the Playskool Travel-Lite Portable Crib. When we discovered that it had been recalled five years earlier, our friend Marla Felcher embarked on a groundbreaking investigation of the juvenile product industry that led to this book.

Read "It's No Accident" and ask yourself, why aren't American manufacturers required to safety test most baby products before marketing them? How can they be allowed to set their own voluntary safety standards? Why don't most parents hear about the tens of millions of unsafe children's products recalled every year? What is the CPSC and why can't it effectively protect our children from disabling injuries and death?

"It's No Accident", which Marla dedicated to Danny's memory, shows that his death was a symptom of a fundamentally-flawed system. Read this book and warn your friends. Nothing will bring Danny back to life, but "It's No Accident" will prevent other, needless tragedies. It is the cornerstone of the next big consumer movement.

Felcher does an admirable job pointing out the numerous flaws in the juvenile products industry and showing how your own young children could be at serious risk. For example, did you know that those popular bath seat rings actually contribute to bathtub drownings and that many, many popular juvenile products are recalled because they are dangerous without your knowing? You will be outraged after reading this book once you discover how little is being done to protect young children from dangerous products at the expense of corporate profit. This book is a must read for all parents of young children and would make a terrific baby shower gift.
