Book Description
As individuals and companies realise the importance of their inventions, issues surrounding patent laws and practices are taking centre stage around the world.
This updated edition of the best selling book has been expanded to keep pace with modern day movements and addresses the global issue surrounding intellectual property. Including new information on areas such as software and biotechnology it shows the techniques that can be used by individuals and academic inventors to protect their work and is the ideal reference source.
- Bridges the gap between the legal system and scientific research and avoids legal jargon
- Details the reasons behind patents, their importance and relevance to all researchers and the strategy needed for filing for a patent
- Focuses on the strategy and reasons rather than just being a textbook of patent law
- Adopts a readable style that explains the basics right up to developing a strategy
- Essential reading for all those who wish to keep pace and protect their work
Reviews of the First Edition
"...fulfills a most useful purpose, is soundly based and discusses patent strategy sensibly. I should like it to be compulsory reading for all newly-appointed research managers." S. M Scott - Research Policy
"...should be recommended reading for both researchers and their managers, and those who work with them." Michael Blackman - Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology
Customer Reviews:
One patent book that is worth the money.......2004-10-02
There are too many books about patents these days that are written by consultants (including lawyers-turned-consultants). Most of them are fluff that try to promote some new buzzword, like "intellectual capital management." There's nothing wrong with having a broad and managerial view about intellectual property, but unfortunately most such books are filled with useless consultant-style diagrams and vague notions such as that intellectual asset managers' duties include "sharing best practices", "leadership", and of course "career development for IAMs."
In sharp contrast, this is one of the few books to get into the nuts and bolts of what best patent practices actually are. It's also considerably cheaper than books available from the major legal publishers.
The explanation is clear, and addressed to non-lawyers. A major benefit is that it has a very global view, discussing patent regimes of several major countries, not just the US. In my experience, most tech companies are very naive about such matters. The author also has a lot of practical experience and insight into the personality types of engineers, patent agents and others involved in the patent process. One thing I'd like to see in a 3rd edition would be more concrete illustration of patent "fences", "walls", etc. perhaps by showing some illustrative patents and claims.
As a patent and business attorney who's practiced both at law firms and in-house in Silicon Valley, I found this to be a very refreshing book. I'm considering ordering some copies for clients.
Nice and friendly thinking about Patent.......2000-08-11
For most persons, patent or trademark, such verbs of IPR, are almost very hard to be familiar with. However, after reading this book, I got used and interested in reading related articles or jounals. Sometimes, I even enjoy discussing such matters with others. What is more is it is surely practical and useful for managers or business persons. With the progressively trend of IPR, getting a opning book to enter this new world is so critical and having no choice. However, we could be a little frustrated with some tricking or unfamiliar verbs while reading some related IPR writtings. Fortunately, I got this book and really enjoy it. I fully am sure to recommand this book for the above-mentioned reasons. In addition to me, most of the classmates in the university could enjoy it and find much instriction or delighting in this book. From then on, we have started to research such knowledge. Even, I back to office-career now. My boss have told me to read this book to improve self-knowledge to be a good role in our technology market. This book is just so fancy. And everyone will be very enjoyed it with reading it.

Book Description
When Oxford published Emotion and Adaptation, the landmark 1991 book on the psychology of emotion by internationally acclaimed stress and coping expert Richard Lazarus, Contemporary Psychology welcomed it as "a brightly shining star in the galaxy of such volumes." Psychiatrists, psychologists and researchers hailed it as a masterpiece, a major breakthrough in our understanding of the emotional process and its central role in our adaptation as individuals and as a species. What was still needed, however, was a book for general readers and health care practitioners that would dispel the myths still surrounding cultural beliefs about emotion and systematically explain the relevance of the new research to the emotional dramas of our everyday lives. Now, in The Passions of Life, Lazarus draws on his four decades of pioneering research to bring readers the first book to move beyond both clinical jargon and "feel-good" popular psychology to really explain, in plain, accessible language, how emotions are aroused, how they are managed, and how they critically shape our views of ourselves and the world around us. With his co-author writer Bernice Lazarus, Dr. Lazarus explores the latest findings on the short and long-term causes and effects of various emotions, including the often conflicting research on stress management and links between negative emotions and heart disease, cancer, and other aspects of physical and psychological health. Lazarus makes a strong case that contrary to common assumption, emotions are not irrational--our emotions and our analytical thought processes are inextricably linked. While not a "how-to" book, The Passions of Life does describe how readers can interpret what lies behind their own emotions and those of their families, friends, and co-workers, and how to manage them more effectively. Exploring fifteen emotions in depth, from love to jealousy, the authors show how the personal meaning we give to the events and conditions of our lives trigger such emotions as anger, anxiety, guilt, and pride. They provide fascinating vignettes to frame a "biography" of each emotion. Some are composite case histories drawn from Dr. Lazarus's long career, but most are stories of people the Lazaruses have known over the years--people whose emotional fears, conflicts, and desires mirror readers' own. The Lazaruses also offer a special chapter on the diverse strategies of coping people use in managing their emotions, and another, "When Coping Fails," on psychotherapy and its approaches to emotional stress and dysfunction, from traditional Freudian psychoanalysis to continuing research into relaxation techniques, meditation, hypnosis, and biofeedback. Packed with insight and compellingly readable, The Passions of Life will enrich all readers fascinated by our emotional lives.

The Thinking Person's Guide to feelings.......2002-08-18
This is a comprehensive handbook and user guide to human emotions. It has the depth, rigor, and authority of an academic text and the accessibility of a self-help book. It unravels mysteries of human behavior that I wondered about for years.
The book begins with a grand tour of fifteen emotions. Each of these detailed tours begins with a case study followed by a description of the unique dramatic plot, the underlying assessment of personal goals, provocation, personal meaning, and coping strategies for each emotion. The logic underlying each emotion is analyzed. Subtle but useful distinctions are described between related emotions and between emotions and their synonyms. For example, the distinction between envy and jealousy, the difference between anxiety, fright, fear, and horror and the differentiation between embarrassment, shame, shyness, and humiliation is made clear.
A central theory of the book is that emotion and logic ("heart" and "head") cannot be separated. Each emotion begins with our appraisal of how we have been harmed or benefited in a certain way. After this appraisal, we choose a course of action. Knowing the logic of each emotion allows you to decipher peoples' emotional patterns and reconcile them with personal goals.
The book concludes with discussion of several practical implications. These include emotions and their relationship to stress and health as well as descriptions of psychotherapy approaches that can be helpful when coping fails.
I look forward to re-reading and studying this substantial book again and again.

Book Description
The Laws of Spirit opens with the story of Dan Millman’s encounter with a sage in the wooded hills near his home. Through stories, tests, and experiences in the wild, the sage challenges Millman to examine 12 core principles that underlie human existence: balance, choice, process, presence, compassion, faith, expectation, integrity, action, cycles, surrender, and unity. The book shows how these keys — at the heart of every religion, culture, and moral system — can lead to a deeper sense of meaning, connection, and harmony with the world. It also shows readers how these principles can transform relationships, careers, finance, and health. Quotations and reminders from across the centuries inform and inspire readers as they accompany Millman on his journey.

Map of Spirit.......2007-02-09
This book is short and to the point. The problem is that once you have the tools in this book, can you apply them. That seems to be my downfall. Another good guide book out there by my favorite author.
A GREAT BOOK!!.......2007-01-30
This book is one of my all time favorites. I have bought over 40 copies of this book and given them to friends (many of them in turn told me they bought copies of this book for friends and family). If you want to give a gift that will be appreciated, give this book as a gift!
I have reread this book several times!
A really good book .......2006-11-07
I was not expecting such a moving book when I just picked it up at the book store. It is full of life long daily formulas to live by and share.
I have recommeded it to many people.
Everyone should learn and live these laws........2006-07-16
I read this book after reading "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" and "Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior." I highly recommend both of those, but the thing that I like a lot about this book is that it presents it's message in a shorter form than the two mentioned above. I really like how this book is organized into 12 sections "Laws" so that you can look any specific one up as needed.
Each chapter begins with The Law that will be presented, a short verse pertaining to it, a quote relevant to the topic, then it's right to the story/example/point of the lesson in understanding the "Law". It's along the same lines as "Peaceful Warrior" books in that the lessons are learned from a sage through different experiences. Some of the experiences are extreme, -but useful in that - so often, are the life experiences that awaken us extreme.
There is a lot of good information in this little book that we need to help us as we continue to grow in our spiritual path. This is a book I will keep on my 'favourites' book shelf. The shelf where I go back and run my fingers along the book spines and pick just the right book to remember/refresh and read again.
A Wonderful Book of Laws to Live By.......2005-11-06
"The Laws of Spirit" is a wonderful tale through which the author has woven 12 essential laws to live by - laws that, when brought to our awareness, and utilized, can literally change your life!
The story is based around a man who has recently begun both a physical & spiritual journey, and the sage he meets along the way. This sage teaches him about each of the 12 laws, providing wonderful examples & showing him how to apply each one to every-day life.
I love that each "law" is explained in "down-to-earth" language and that, due to the examples given, it becomes quite easy to see how they can be used to better our lives on a day-to-day basis.
"The Laws of Spirit" is a relatively small book, as it can easily be read in 1 or 2 sittings. However, I would suggest either keeping the book handy so that you can re-read it, or taking some notes so that you can easily be reminded of the many insights given. (I chose to take notes, so it took me a little bit longer to finish the book - but I now have the info. I need to put into practice all that I learned).
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality & personal growth. It's an easy, interesting read, that is jam packed with wonderful insights.
Book Description
Do you panic at the thought of making an important decision in your life? When faced with the prospect of changing jobs, getting married, or moving to a new home, do you vacillate, procrastinate, and run, hoping that the need to make a choice will go away? Or do you jump in headfirst just to get the decision over with?
If this sounds familiar, you are in luck, as Dr. Foster, Director of Boston's Chestnut Hill Institute, is here to help! Based on his twelve-year study, What Do I Do Now? presents 30 laws that great decision makers use to navigate their way successfully through tough choices. Each law is illustrated with real-life stories. You will learn why you shouldn't make a decision until you feel ready to do so (Law #2), why you must set priorities (Law #14), why obsessing over details is costly (Law #16), and why listening to friends for advice isn't necessarily the best thing to do (Law #24). Apply the laws in order and one at a time; you may find you need to use Law #1, Law #10, or all 30 laws, depending on your situation. Easy-to-apply exercises are included, and there are no mind-numbing pro/con lists.
Dr. Foster also gives his own professional advice in a series of essays entitled "Perspectives."
In concise and easy-to-understand language, he tells you, based on his experience, what the ten biggest decisions faced by people are and how to handle them; how to set priorities when you aren't quite sure what they are; and how you can tell that you've made the right decision.
Once you apply the 30 laws, you will see your decision-making skills grow, as well as your confidence!

Answers for "What Do I Do Now?".......2005-06-18
Can a simple decision change our lives permanently for the better? Yes.
When life hands us struggles or challenges or problems (or whatever euphemism you use to talk about when life gets hard), decision-making sometimes seems cloudy. Recently I read a thought-provoking book on decision-making called "What Do I Do Now?" by Dr. Charles Foster. In it, he lays out 30 laws of good decision-making he's developed from his over 14 years of studies with tons of participants.
Maybe this sounds a little dry, but believe me - it's anything but dry. Better decisions about our lives and activities can have resounding results capable of creating great joy, opportunity, prosperity and peace in our lives.
Just as a little taste of what's in there, I'll share some of my notes:
Law #1 - Focus on the most important thing.
(Wow, there's a great rule. Well, duh! I've heard this before. Yada, yada, yada! But wait... then Dr. Foster reveals...)
How do you recognize the most important thing?
* It's something that will make your life wonderful. (Oh, yeah. I forgot that decisions can do that. Good point.)
* Or it's something that will enable you to take care of your most important responsibility. (Yeah, when that's taken care of, I'll breathe easier. Sounds sensible.)
* Or it's something that will make it possible for you to solve your biggest problem. (Oh, yeah. That's right. Decision-making is about solving problems, not drowning in ambivalence.)
* Or it's something that will address one huge, stubborn fact you've been refusing to accept. (Hey, buddy, what are you implying? That my lack of focus on making good decisions and taking action might be a problem for me? Errr, well, I kinda see your point.)
* Or it's something that fits who you really are. (You mean it's OK for me to value myself as highly as I value others? That if I do what the Big Guy put me here to do, that might be a great decision? Maybe I should do more to fulfill my purpose. And maybe that would actually make me happier. What a concept!)
Law #2 - Don't Decide Until You're Ready
(I didn't have a problem with this concept. I take my dear sweet time already. I need to think more about his Law #4 - Choose It or Lose It.)
Law #3 - Look for all the good things that can happen.
(In the middle of struggle, we often fail to see the great things that can come of making good decisions. If we don't yield to the pressures of the moment, we can list out all the great things that can happen from making a good decision. Just so you'll start to think about what GOOD things can happen, the good doctor lays out...)
Four Flavors of Good Things That Can Happen
1. You get more of what you were hoping for.
2. You get something from them that you never imagined you'd get.
3. The outcome you were looking for might be much more likely to happen than you realized.
4. The outcome comes with a smaller price tag than you thought.
(I think you're getting the idea here. Better decisions lead to better outcomes - often unforseeably better.)
I hope the notes above give you some enjoyable food for thought. There are 26 other great thought-provoking, decision-spurring laws in the book. This guy spent the last 14 years studying this stuff and his ideas are elegantly simple and clear. Some may seem obvious but believe me - this guy makes each point alive with possibilities and how-to's.
In closing, let me just remind you of Law #8.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE BETTER OPTIONS.
Don't let yourself be mired in the challenges of life. You can choose the answers you need, the answers that make sense for you. I hope you choose something that will make your life wonderful today.
$ Down the Drain! Don't make my mistake!.......2004-06-02
I saw the average star rating and didn't look further - I knew this was the book I wanted. If I had bothered to read the first review I would have been warned about what I fell for. This IS NOT the book. It's a few pages that barely cover any information at all, just an overview of his first 10 principles.
Buyer Beware! - This eBook is not the book described........2004-02-25
The descriptions and reviews on this page refer to the printed book, not the ebook. This ebook consists simply of a brief 7-8 synopsis of 10 of the 30 laws, along with a link to the publishers website, and an ad to buy the full book. To make matters worse, amazon.com is charging $2.00 above retail price.
There is very little more information in the ebook than is in the summaries on this page. Don't waste your money on what is essentially a $5.00 advertisement for the printed book. Buy the printed edition insead.
Well what DO I do?.......2003-10-18
I can't decide whether or not to read this book. There are so many other books to choose from, and I keep putting off the decision. People tell me this is a good book, and although I appreciate the opinions of others, I'm uneasy making the decision. I feel frozen on the spot. I give the book 3 stars, since it's the middle score, and saves me having to make a decision either way.
I'm happy to have read this bood.......2003-09-25
I've always had a hard time making decisions. In fact I would research the heck out of everything in order to make one measly decision. I've always been happy with what I decided on, but I've alway went with there's always something better. Well it got so bad that I've got to the point of enjoying the research of something vs. going straight to the decision making....what a waste of time. What do I do Now? is a great life advice book but more importantly outlines what one considers when making a decision. What's great about this book is that instead of slowly getting to each criteria through researching, you go straight to it and make a decision quickly. I don't feel guilty for not able to make a decision either. It used to be that I thought I was too wishy washy to make one but in reality did not have enough info. to make a decision. The book helps in that it tells you at what step you are in a decision process. I'm really really glad I read this book!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent, non-hysterical look at the gay lifestyle........1998-11-03
Magnuson presents a non-hysterical, meticulous analysis of the gay community. Using their own publications and materials as his source of reference, he presents a perspective rarely given serious audience. In an age where balanced, honest debate is all but absent on this issue, Are Gay Rights Right? raises the issues succinctly, and doesn't distort conclusions to satisfy the politically correct. I have checked many of the works Magnuson cited and found his references to be accurate and undistorted. Gays have cited this work as a threat to them in that it is inarguable in its research and accurate in its findings. I can think of no other source that presents a more descriptive, sobering snapshot of the gay community. This thoughtful and provocative work should be used in our classrooms.
Accurate, Timely, and Needed for Our Country!.......1998-08-29
After reading this book and meeting the author, I believe this book finally brings the truth to those who really want to shine light on a very important issue. Facts are Facts, no matter how old they are. The fact that George Washington was our first president is never going to change. No matter how far we as a society have fallen from what's morally and ethically proper, the truth may hurt a few, but really help a lot.
Out-dated, distorted, stereotypical re-hash of homosexuality.......1998-06-30
Although the cover says "updated edition", this book is anything but current. The author cites "present day studies" which are referenced from the 1960's. Another quote refering to "modern medicine" is from 1971. The author also presents his personal opinions referenced as fact. The book is basically fodder for those of the extreme religious right who believe that homosexuals are less than human, that AIDs is an exclusively gay disease, and all the other lies and distortions that they choose to believe, despite our current knowledge and understanding of homosexuality. The author feels that the "good homosexuals" are those that remain celebate and in the closet. The "evil homosexuals" are those who are visible and in partnerships with other homosexuals. The author also believes that jobs, homes, and access to public accomodation are special privileges that should be denied to homosexuals, i.e. gays rights are special rights. The author paints all homosexuals and homosexuality with a very broad brush; a brush coated with gross distortions and out-dated myths. A look at the facts negates practically all that is written in this book.
