Had the information I was looking for in braced frame design using the uniform force method. A large portion of the book is dedicated to braced frame connections and truss connections which a resource I was looking for.

2 out of 5 stars This is an example book........2001-10-11

If you have some basic knowledge of LRFD design and connection. This would be an OK book. It contains so many example in many load cases and connection type. All of them are hot rolled steel or high force connection. In example it dose not tell how to retrive this equation, reference to variables, and how to use this equation.. you only have to guess. If you guess right, then it can be applicable to real construction.

5 out of 5 stars For engineers looking to make connections..........2001-03-27

Tamboli's connection handbook complements the AISC Connections Manual beautifully. In a clear, easy-to-follow way, it addresses all of the major procedures for connecting structural elements and the philosophy behind them. The handbook uses thoughtful examples and good photos to explain how connections work and are built. The tips it gives, especially for connections to composite members and space trusses, are particularly helpful in practical design. I have never seen a more complete, quality connections manual, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of the latest connection techniques.

I am a civil engineer. I have been studying and designing steel structures for years. In Vietnam, this type of structure is not popular, and nobody knows how to make it good, make it beautiful.

The only thing I really want right now is to be the one of the best in area of designing steel structure.

So, this book may bring me some good knowledge, some new idea. That's all. I do want more information, like a sample of pages, picture, drawings, what can be included in this book

And at the end, I am so sorry about my English. I am not good enough in English.

        Book Description

Steel is one of the most versatile materials available in the construction industry and its many applications have enabled architects and engineers to
go far beyond what was once considered possible. The volume documents all aspects of steel as a construction material, first looking at the historical development of building with steel. This is followed by several chapters which examine to a high degree of technical detail the physical properties of the material, the principles of construction using steel and the wide range of steel elements and their uses. The final chapter presents 54 examples which illustrate the many applications of steel in construction – from simple halls to complex multistorey buildings. These examples were selected because of their innovative use of steel, demonstrating its great potential for minimising the materials and montage necessary. For ease of comparison all the plans have been drawn to the same scale. The volume concludes with a listing of the relevant norms and standards.

5 out of 5 stars Steel Construction Manual.......2007-08-27

This book has multitudes of examples of how steel use has developed and is developing. It offers the designer basic details and sizing ideas. If one is looking for a book on detailed steel sizes, forms, and dimensioned details this is not it. However, if one is looking for an overview of the product to better understand it and how to incorporate it into projects, this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Steel Construction Manual.......2004-01-29

The title of this book, in my mind, is a misnomer. If you're looking for a true manual of steel construction, meaning a how-to book, this isn't the book to buy. This book is centered around architecture, not down and dirty steel construction techniques. There are no methods included in the book for such things as calculating loads, yield, tensile, etc. If you want a world wide sampling of connecting means, truss designs, etc. with no dimensions in the examples then this is the book for you. In short I am very disappointed in my purchase as it doesn't suit my needs.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for architects and engineers.......2003-10-09

This book gives an overview of steel in building construction, mostly its structural uses. It differs from the Concrete and Masonry versions, which lean more towards a summary of the building codes, and the Glass version, which goes on at length about solar effects, in its more lengthy review of the engineering basics involved. (But perhaps the subject lends itself to this approach, being more specialized.) The text is also the easiest to read of all the books, more than compensating for the lack of color pictures anywhere. The middle technical section covers the subject in a very orderly way, beginning with the structural properties of small components and proceeding on to the assembled skyscraper. The last sections will leave you scratching your head unless you're a structural engineer though.

There is also a section on construction practices, where you might be reminded to leave an inch or two of space under your column base plates to allow for construction tolerances, and to use special expanding grout for filling it instead of mortar or concrete, which would shrink on curing and provide opportunities for water to get in. Or to try to achieve equal compression in all your columns, so settling will be uniform.

Surprisingly enjoyable, and not used in the other books but maybe not possible there, owing to their extensive excerpting of tables from building codes, is the way the text does not normally keep referring you to figures, but allows you to read uninterrupted. The figures are there, as in the other books, but they have more extensive captions which allow them to stand alone and be read in parallel with the main text.

Like the other books in the series, there are no equations to speak of, or very few. Just an attempt to explain all the relevant principles in a qualitative way and to demonstrate their use with hundreds of meticulous drawings.

I was looking for a book to help me complete an architectural drawing for office partition wall framing with metal studs. I found this book is not written for readers who want to find details in architectural drafting and design of metal stud framing in order to comply with commercial building codes.

3 out of 5 stars Classroom textbook use only.......2007-02-23

The author admits he wrote this book to assist with classroom teaching. As an additional explanation to a teacher explaining it, the book would be great. The problem is his explanations are hard to follow and the picture angles and lighting make it hard to see many of the details he refers to. I ended up skimming the book for good basic ideas. He obviously is very knowledgable in the field.

I am a general contractor that needed good and reliable information on metal framing. This book is well worth the money and has allowed me teach in house crews how to properly work with metal framing components. This book shows a variety of procedures and a lot of "tricks" of the trade. I can honestly say that this book will take you from zero knowledge to actually being able to frame a decent size job starting with proper layout and moving onto framing around obstacles and a variety of different things like headering doors and windows, framing soffits, framing for suspended drywall ceilings, furred walls, interior and exterior walls, etc.

This book has saved me hours of time right after I read it and started applying the information. My crews can cost me over $100/hr when they stand around trying to figure out something or have to redo work. Having them read this book before a job has saved hundreds of dollars and has produced a much better end product than we have had in the past.

If you are new to metal stud framing, you need this book.

        2 out of 5 stars Leaves a lot out........2005-04-14

I'm not sure who this book is written for. It has a lot of nice pictures, and some details about the more simple parts of framing with metal studs. But it leaves a lot out. Whenever anything gets complicated Mr. Clark says, "your foreman will tell you" what to do. He doesn't explain to the reader how to decide what will be wanted. That leaves out every reader who is a foreman level and above. It's not a book for builders, contractors, architects, designers, engineers, supervisors, or anyone wanting to convert from light frame wood construction to metal framing construction. For example, there are no structural calculation tables for bearing walls and no reference to where one might look to find structural calculation data for metal framing. One chapter talks about structural framing and mentions that the components are a heavier gauge than non-structural walls, but there is nothing to say how much heavier gauge is needed where, or how light of a gauge can be used in non-bearing walls either. There is nothing about how to select the gauge or type of material for particular applications. All of that kind of information is left to "your foreman will tell you."

And, it's not very good for the workman on the job either. My son bought my copy because he was out working on a commercial job where metal framing was required. By the time he had gotten around to buying the book after working a few days, he had learned just about everything he needed to know from other workers. It's not all that hard or complicated to bend down a few tabs. He gave the book to me saying that he found little or nothing he could use on the job. Yes, there are a few helpful hints here and there in this book, but overall it's a real disappointment whether you're a workman on the job or a supervisor wanting to know how to select material for the job. Maybe it could be used for a classroom teaching of beginner framers. They could get some good ideas before starting on the job site.

2 out of 5 stars Not for neophytes.......2001-04-18

Despite the reviews and the suggestive title, this book will NOT provide a grounding in metal framing for those wishing to convert from traditional skills. Designers/architects will learn nothing regarding metal framing compared to wood framing. Little or nothing in the way of loading is provided. This book may have tips for seasoned experts but it certainly assumes that you come to the table with plenty of metal framing experience.
