5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read.......2007-10-04

I am so sorry that I did not read this book 5 years ago. It explained why my mom behaves the way that she does. I think that everyone needs to read this because there is not a person alive that does not or will not love someone who has dementia or Alzheimers. It gives medical information that is easy to understand as well as ways to best deal with their loved one. It reassures the caregiver that they need to take care of themselves and it helps them to realize that thier loved one still loves them but is sometimes unable to show it in acceptable ways.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for caregivers.......2007-07-27

For those of us who are caregivers, this book is a lifesaver. Before reading this book I was certain that many of the behaviors that my family member exhibits were unique to her. While I often read about Alzheimer's, I never read anything that made me stop and realize that, first, I am not alone, and second, that there are ways that I can handle situations better. This book is full of great suggestions on how to deal with the many behavioral issues that are exhibited by those with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Whenever I have an especially difficult day, I go online to the Alzheimer's page and remind myself how difficult it is for my family member. This book drove home that message, yet more importantly provided me with some tools on how to deal with these issues. I cannot stress enough how much I thought our situation and the behaviors were unique; it is liberating to realize that they are not. As well, understanding why the person exhibits such behaviors makes it much easier to respond correctly.

I wish I could thank the authors personally for this book. I hope they both know that their wisdom, concern and awareness of the Alzheimer patient has made a difference for me, and I am certain has made a difference for many others.

Caregivers -- buy this book, you will find some stress greatly diminished.

5 out of 5 stars The 36 Hour Day.......2007-07-16

The 36-Hour Day is an excellent book for anyone dealing with Alzheimer's patients. It is hard for me to imagine anyone with the disease reading the book, but family members will benefit tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People with Alzheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss in Later Life.......2007-07-01

Well-written, easy to read, and comprehansive..excellent resource! I have already recommended it to others facing a future as a caregiver.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone that has an alzheimer family member, or anyone involved in the care of an alzheimer patient!!!!!!.......2007-06-11

I can not stress enough just how helpful and informative this book is. My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease 6 years ago. In those 6 years we have seen numerous doctors, taken numerous tests, spoke to many Social Workers, Home Health Aides, etc. NO ONE gave me the advice, information, suggestions, help, etc., anywhere near as well and thorough as "The 36 Hour Day".
I think so highly of this book and recommend it so much; that just last week, I had a meeting with the Director of Nursing, Head Nurse, and Social Worker at the nursing home where my Dad resides. I highly recommended this book and told the Dir. Of Nursing, it should be mandatory reading for anyone working in the facility.
If you have a loved one or are a care taker of someone with Alzheimer Disease---RUN do not walk, to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of this book.

    Book Description

Perhaps more than any other Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 decision declaring the segregation of public schools unconstitutional, highlighted both the possibilities and the limitations of American democracy. This collection of sixteen original essays by historians and legal scholars takes the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Brown to reconsider the history and legacy of that landmark decision. From the Grassroots to the Supreme Court juxtaposes oral histories and legal analysis to provide a nuanced look at how men and women understood Brown and sought to make the decision meaningful in their own lives.

The contributors illuminate the breadth of developments that led to Brown, from the parallel struggles for social justice among African Americans in the South and Mexican, Asian, and Native Americans in the West during the late nineteenth century to the political and legal strategies implemented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (naacp) in the twentieth century. Describing the decision’s impact on local communities, essayists explore the conflict among African Americans over the implementation of Brown in Atlanta’s public schools as well as understandings of the ruling and its relevance among Puerto Rican migrants in New York City. Assessing the legacy of Brown today, contributors analyze its influence on contemporary law, African American thought, and educational opportunities for minority children.

      Book Description

Abortion. In a sharply divided America is there a more divisive issue? The bitter debate over Roe v. Wade--in the courts, legislatures, press, and streets--has grown ever more ferocious since the Supreme Court's landmark decision in 1973. For years pro-choicers have applauded Roe as a guarantee of women's rights, while pro-lifers have condemned it as the work of an activist and atheistic Court. Now it looms at the center of a growing political storm, as a new president, an old Court, and a divided Congress reconsider Roe's status in the wake of the controversial 2000 elections.

Anyone looking for a concise, balanced, readable, teachable, current, and complete guide to the case need search no further than this new volume by N. E. H. Hull and Peter Charles Hoffer. Giving due respect to both sides of the conflict, the authors effectively trace and analyze the core debates, examine the case's unique history, clarify the jurisprudence behind the Court's ruling, and gauge its impact on American society. Of special note is their revealing account of how the Court attempted to steer a middle course by rejecting both abortion on demand and the absolute right to life and yet, in the end, wound up igniting a firestorm of protest instead.

Unlike other accounts of Roe, this one examines the complete social and legal context of the case. Hull and Hoffer review more than a century of abortion practice (and abuse), common-law views on abortion, nineteenth-century criminalization measures, and the rapid changes in science, public mores, and civil rights that finally brought the issue before the Supreme Court. They also trace abortion law through the twentieth century, reprise the 1965 case of Griswold v. Connecticut, in which the Supreme Court overturned a state law against contraceptives, and reexamine the highly publicized attempts to reverse Roe in Webster v. Reproductive Services (1989) and Casey v. Planned Parenthood (1992).

All of the key actors are here: Norma McCorvey, the "Jane Roe" who never actually had the abortion she originally sought; attorney Sarah Weddington, who challenged Texas law by drawing on her own abortion experience; lobbyists on both sides of the question; and each of the Supreme Court justices. This is a book that can inform and enlighten those on either side of the debate, as well as all of those in between.

This book is part of the Landmark Law Cases and American Society series.

5 out of 5 stars Is it murder or is it a right?.......2005-02-03

One of many controversial Supreme court cases in the United States is the case of Roe v Wade. Norma McCourvey was a 23 year old pregnant divorced women. Norma took on the name of Jane Roe to secure her identity infont of the public. Roe lived in the state of Texas. She wanted to terminate her pregnancy the only obstacle was that with in the state of Texas a women was not allowed to have an abortion unless her life depended on it.Roe was pregnant from an affair she had which caused her marriage to fail. Roe took the case to the Supreme court alleging that her rights were being violated and that under the amendments 1,4 9 and 14 she had a choice. The attorneys who would carry on this case were two young women named Sarh Weddington adn Linda Coffee. Both had recently graduated from the University of Texas. Sarah at the time was also pregnant, but would go on and have the child. Attorney Henry Wade was force with the decision to allow Norma nad other women to have an abortion. Two years after the case was presented the court decided that in fact a womens right to choose on what to do with her body was hers and nobody else.
I would reccomend this book to everyone who is interested in politics. Due to the fact that no matter how someone feels towards a certain topic you may never know what your decision might be. I might one day become a lawyer and reading this book opened my eyes ;to realize that I can not allow my morals and beliefs to get in the way of my profession. I would also reccomend this book to anyone who has strong feelings on whether abortion should be legal or not. Finally I just enjoyed this book because although abortion is a very controversial topic it is also one a very easy book to read and comprehend.

5 out of 5 stars A highly readable and engaging book on the topic.......2003-10-13

This is a highly readable and engaging book on the topic, covering the history of abortion laws from early 1800s to the Clinton years. To explain the legal shifts throughout those 200 years, the authors describe the social, political, religious and scientific forces that have lead up to each turning point, and how those shifts in turn have influenced further shifts in a seemingly never ending chain. They do so by presenting the various sides of the debate in an even-handed and concise manner, without losing depth on the one hand and without getting bogged down with technicalities on the other. What I found of particular interest was the behind-the-scenes debates of the Justices both in Griswold v. Connecticut and in Roe v. Wade that shed light on their final decision.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Bang for the Buck.......2007-09-29

Sessler paints a clear picture of each of the American V8 engine families during this time period. He presents the strengths and weaknesses of each design as well as their specs and histories. Even the novice reader soon knows why certain engines succeeded (e.g. the Chevy Small Block and Ford's 385 series Big Block) when others failed (the Ford 312 and Chevy 409), as well as which of the "Off-Brands" are good (Buick's 455 and the AMC 401 for example). I wish he had included more specs like bore spacing and engine weight in his data panels. Likewise I disagree strongly with his assessment of the V8 engine as "For all intents and purposes dead and gone". There have been a number of new V8 designs introduced since 1974 and some of the old designs are going to be around for decades to come. Overall however it is hard to think of a motor book that gives more bang for the buck than this one!

      4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-11-11

This book was good about giving info about all types of engines and the differences between them. I still rate it a 4 and hope you enjoy it

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-03-03

You simply cannot go wrong. This book, at this price, is a veritable font of information. The only thing I'd like to see is an expansion of the detail. Info is given on block and head casting #'s, and valve sizes, but no info on camshafts. What's more, there were more American postwar engines in the period that were every bit as interesting as the V-8s (Corvair, Slant-6, etc.). I'd gladly pay more to see it expanded in it's scope. All in all, great book.

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2001-08-29

This book is what I was looking for a while!!!Great detail!Priceless facts!A must have for any motor head whether you like Ford Chevy Mopar or whatever. Its here! The book binding was a little cheaply made but the information was...WOW!I would have been happy if it was written on notebook paper! The book puts the engines into familys which is very comprehensive.I learned a lot and gained new respect for almost all the engines this book references!!!

Hardin is to theoretical and strategic labor relations as Elkouri is to contract administration. It is the place my staff is instructed to start on any collective bargaining issue. Also as with Elkouri, it tries so hard to be balanced that neither management nor union regotiators may be able to find the hard edges they might be looking for. Its utility in the public sector depends on how similar the state or local bargaining law is to the National Labor Relations Act. If the bargaining duty language is similar to the NLRA, the public sector practitioner will find Hardin useful.

      Book Description

When Americans cast their ballots on November 7, no one expected that the outcome would still be in doubt more than a month later. For the first time ever, it seemed, the presidential election had ended in a dead heat, with but a few hundred votes in Florida separating Al Gore and George W. Bush. The stage was set for an extraordinary drama of recounts, challenges, court cases - and hanging, swinging, and dimpled chads.

The Washington Post, America's premier newspaper for politics and elections, has been in the forefront of the post-election coverage, and in this book its award-winning staff provides the first full-length account of the closest and strangest election in our history - from the last frantic days of campaigning to the networks' premature election-night projections; from the "butterfly ballot" to the manual recounts; from the first legal challenges to the final adjudication. The Post has offered unsurpassed coverage of the events that transfixed the nation and the world, and now its all-star team of reporters has produced a page-turner to rival the best political thrillers. Deadlock is a wholly original work of history-in-the-making, written by David Von Drehle and Ellen Nakashima, two of the paper's most accomplished political writers, drawing on the reporting of over two dozen top reporters and columnists in Washington, Florida, and Texas. The Post will publish a seven-part front-page series based on the book right before Inauguration Day (January 14-20), and the book will contain additional chapters that will not have appeared in the newspaper. Books will be in stores by mid-February, making it the first post-election book available to readers. Phil Graham, the legendary publisher of The Washington Post in the 1950s and early 1960s, famously called newspapers "the first rough draft of history." His newspaper has now produced not a rough draft, but history itself - rich, detailed, nuanced, and groundbreaking. This is a book that no citizen should do without.

      3 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer.......2004-09-19

If I could have given DEADLOCK another half-star, I would have. It's a fine, straight-ahead account of the disputed Florida election, and I've got only a couple of negative things to say. For one thing, there are a great number of characters who pop in and out of the book, and I wish the editor would have inserted a Cast of Characters page. And for another thing -- and this is not anybody's fault -- we know, almost four years later, more than the authors did when they wrote this book, almost immediately after the election. As I finished, I wanted to know the results of all those after-the-fact recounts that were conducted by various news organizations. But I'll have to find another source for those (though it's pretty silly to even care, at this point). Overall, a quick and informative read.

      5 out of 5 stars 2000 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.......2003-10-16

DEADLOCK BY THE WASHINGTON POST IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS ON THE BUSH/GORE 2000 ELECTION RECOUNT VOTE.

4 out of 5 stars More Detail Would Have Been Nice.......2002-11-28

Two things struck me while reading this book, the first is that I doubt there is a book out there that is truly balanced and not somewhat biased. The second thing was that Gore really got the shaft, not so much by the recount wars, but by the election official that came up with the Butterfly Ballot. In the history of the USA this decision ranks up there with new Coke and the XFL, what a mistake. As far as the reporting in the book it was not bad for a review of all the articles they had in the paper, but it did not really dig into the particular issues very deeply. I wanted more detail and behind the scenes with both the candidates. I also wanted more details on the court cases; I felt like the sky-high overview of the issues of the cases did not do such an important issue justice.

In reading the book I think a little bit of a democratic bias comes out, just a little, but enough to notice. I also thought it interesting that they had far more details of the Gore group then the Bush camp, it follows the perception that the Post is somewhat liberal in its views. The book is an overview that came out almost 10 minutes after Gore hung up the phone on the second concession call so there are a few more details out now that they did not get in the book. Overall it is a good effort and a readable book, but not the end all be all on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific re-telling of a gripping era in American history.......2002-03-01

I don't care what Repubs say, there was no liberal media bias apparent in this book. They showed both campaigns, warts and all, and let the public form its own opinion. The book was a fantastic behind-the-scenes re-telling of America's most recent Constitutional crisis, one that could have disrupted government for years to come. Of course, recent events have taken peoples' minds off of this contentious election, but this book should be pushed as much as possible so people will never forget that every vote actually does count sometimes.

        Book Description

This five-volume documentary collection—culled from an international archival search that turned up over 14,000 letters, speeches, pamphlets, essays, and newspaper editorials—reveals how black abolitionists represented the core of the antislavery movement. While the first two volumes consider black abolitionists in the British Isles and Canada (the home of some 60,000 black Americans on the eve of the Civil War), the remaining volumes examine the activities and opinions of black abolitionists in the United States from 1830 until the end of the Civil War. In particular, these volumes focus on their reactions to African colonization and the idea of gradual emancipation, the Fugitive Slave Law, and the promise brought by emancipation during the war.

          Book Description

Similar to large cities, rural towns have undergone dramatic change since mid-century. The decline in retailing, changes in manufacturing, and jobs moving abroad have had a tremendous impact. Yet while rural and industrial areas have similar concerns about adjusting to a changing economy, successful urban strategies cannot be blindly transferred to rural areas. Nor can rural areas be considered homogeneous. They differ in ethnic makeup, industrial structure, topography, and natural and human resources. Appreciating the diversity of rural areas, this book presents case studies from different industries, regions, and cultures, providing examples of the activity in small town and rural development, and reflecting on how these strategies might be pursued elsewhere. This collection provides examples of communities that have attempted to affect their future. Telling the stories of small towns that do not attract the attention of national media, this book celebrates the success, creativity, and vision of rural residents. Also included are examples of less effective rural development initiatives, which can be lessons to analyze and avoid mistakes. Ultimately, what is best in small town and rural development is the result of community engagement. This volume will help people to begin, or strengthen, that process of engagement.
