Award-winning reporter and author Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) once again uses his investigative skills to address the primary objections to Christianity. As a former atheist, Strobel understands the rational resistance to faith. He even names the eight most convincing arguments against Christian faith:
1) If there's a loving God, why does this pain-wracked world groan under so much suffering and evil?
2) If the miracles of God contradict science, then how can any rational person believe that they're true?
3) If God is morally pure, how can he sanction the slaughter of innocent children as the Old Testament says he did?
4) If God cares about the people he created, how could he consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn't believe the right things about him?
5) If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the millions of people who have never heard of him?
6) If God really created the universe, why does the evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life?
7) If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages?
8) If I'm still plagued by doubts, then is it still possible to be a Christian?
These are mighty tough questions, and Strobel fields them well. Rather than write a weighty dissertation about the merits of faith, he brings us along on his quest as we meet leaders in the Christian community, such as Peter Kreeft and William Lane Craig. We also encounter his everyday friends and acquaintances that serendipitously fill in the holes in each of the eight arguments against faith. The use of dialogue from personal interviews and a scene-by-scene active narrative makes this an easy and engaging read. However, easy does not mean breezy. This is a book of substance and merit, one that will help Christians defend their faith, especially during the hardest of times, when they have to defend their faith to themselves in moments of doubt. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

3 out of 5 stars True to its title.......2007-09-28

For those wishing to find answers to troublesome questions about their faith, this book is excellent.

For those who are seriously investigating the issue of faith, this book presents some interesting arguments, but is of course very one-sided. Compared to a trial, it's like hearing the examination of witnesses without any cross-examination by opposing counsel. As such, it's true to it's title: it's the case for faith, not a balanced "faith on trial".

Some of the arguments are excellent, others are laughable. For example, the discussion of Hell should be very reassuring to many who have difficulty harmonizing that with a merciful and loving God. On the other hand, J. P. Moreland, an intelligent and highly educated man, says of sociobiology that it reduces morality to a happenstance outcome of evolution. This betrays profound ignorance of sociobiology, which discusses the "moral sense" but not morality (values being a subject for philosophy rather than science). The distinction undermines his argument, but the reader gets no clue about such fallacies.

I just finished this book. My faith was given such an electrified and energized jolt that I am left exhilarated and flabbergasted. The author goes into DEEP detail (so make sure you have the mental energy to really absorb some major information) and he PROVES 100% that GOD exists! You will not be able to argue any differently; I guarantee it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent with some minor flaws.......2007-08-31

In many ways, this is a wonderful book. The questions that he addresses are really the questions being asked; if you witness to non-believers, count on being asked them at some point. It's becoming more and more necessary these days for Christians to be able to answer these objections, especially in light of postmodernism, the "New Atheists," the aggressive promotion of Darwinism (and censorship of those who disagree), the absolute pervasiveness of secular humanism in the education system, etc.

I would absolutely recommend reading these before you go to college, if not sooner - as a current college senior (graduating in 2008), let me tell you that it is essential that you know how to answer these objections, especially if you go to a secular university. Tragically, many people don't really know how to do that and end up abandoning their faith in college as a result.

I once heard a story of a little boy who was asked what faith was and replied that "faith is believing something you know isn't true." Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to agree; this book shows that that sentiment is wrong. Faith is neither blind nor irrational. Strobel here isn't so much concerned with making a positive case for Christianity as he is for defending it against the major objections. Therefore the primary focus of the book is refuting the "Big 8" objections to Christianity (like "why would a God of love allow suffering if it was in His power to stop it?", "isn't it prejudiced to claim that Christianity is the only true religion?" or "isn't eternal punishment in hell unjust?").

The answers to these objections are informative and thought-provoking. There's definitely a lot of helpful material there. The chapters on evolution (chapter 3), the slaughter of the innocents (chapter 4), and the exclusivity of Jesus (chapter 5) were particularly strong. The chapter on suffering and hell were also very thought provoking, although I thought that they relied far too heavily on the free will argument, which I found disappointing as a Calvinist. I wish that the chapter on suffering discussed the Fall of Man more. The only chapter I thought was weak was the chapter on violence in church history; I really thought more could have been done with the topic.

Overall, in spite of some flaws (as I pointed out, I think it tends to rely too much on the free will defense), this is a very good book.

Even if - or especially if - you're not a Christian, I challenge you to read this book. See for yourself if Christianity can really answer its critics.

For you Christians out there, this book is a great witnessing tool. It can help you witness more effectively to non-Christians. It's also a great thing to give to non-Christians. Read it yourself too - it will strengthen your faith. As I said before, if you're in school, this is an absolute must-read, especially if you're about to go to college; this is one book you cannot go without reading, especially if you're going to a secular university. Chances are you WILL be confronted with the objections in this book, especially since so many of our universities are so pervasively secular these days. I can't help but think that a lot of people who left the faith in college might not have left if they had read this book before going.

This book is strongly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Did Nothing to Restore My Faith.......2007-08-30

Since the premature death of my mother, I have had a crises of faith. I became an agnostic (not overnight, but after a long perod of reflection). I bought and read numerous books about God, religion etc. This book did nothing but make me angry. Supposedly I am supposed to kow tow to a deity who slaughters innocents for a "greater good."

All of the explanations about the problem of evil are circular and rely on biblical testimony. The Bible was written by Men and NOT by God. It is not infallible. Strobel cherry-picks the Bible--choosing what is to be taken literally and what is a metaphor for something else. If I were to believe even SOME of the Bible, I would have to conclude that God is at least partially evil in nature.

I also have to say that the analogy of the bear in the hunter's trap is the most pathetic thing I have read in a long time.

I can punch holes through all of the arguments presented in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not so talented.......2007-05-22

Poorly laid out explanations and a lot of circular logic, and using things as evidence that are themselves unproven. One must understand that quoting from ones own holy book is not evidence to people who do not believe in said holy book's words. Someone that already buys into the religion will love this, but it will not turn the mind of a single skeptic.

5 out of 5 stars OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS FOR SALE.......2007-07-27

This is one amazing woman. The story about how she became a lawyer is nothing short of awe inspiring. And the stories in the court room will make you cringe and maybe even cry. And then there's the stories of the high profile celebrities who walked after they murdered. Very disconcerting and nauseous.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing........2007-04-14

Pandering.

Easy read though. As she implicitly acknowledges in every chapter of this book, she's a prime example of what she's criticizing.

She also appears to be intellectually dishonest and does not respect the legal system. Her tirades (and "tirades" is fairly accurate) against high priced defense attorneys (easy target, everybody hates them, right? me too) are quite simplistic for what I'd expect from a former prosecutor.

I can't believe that a person who comes across as a fairly average thinker, and a zealot, somehow managed to achieve a 100% conviction rate, without bending the rules a LOT.

Still, not a bad read. Burned through it very fast.

I would have given it 2 stars, until I found out there were sections in the book plagiarized. An former officer of the court who steals intellectual property, that deserves a ZERO.

3 out of 5 stars Media and money can win you a case........2007-02-14

Nancy Grace host of her own show on CNN, a legal commentator on Court TV and a former prosecutor who never loss a case criticizes the criminal justice system including defense attorneys, judges, and juries. She also comments on controversial cases like Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, and Scout Peterson among others. She also suggests ways to reform the legal process to help victims of crime rather then criminals. Her book is factual and you can tell she has a zeal for justice. And I agree with almost everything she says in this book, especially that criminals should not profit from their convictions.

1 out of 5 stars She's Nuts!.......2007-02-02

It is impossible to read this pitifully bad book without also conjuring up the image of Nancy Grace on CNN. She appears nightly with her face invariably twisted and contorted in rage and disgust, while bullying the weak and hapless and hopeless. It is beyond bizarre that CNN allows this embarrassing, demented freak to continue to appear on its programming. Nancy Grace may be the meanest and most cynical person appearing on television. And she's crazy.

This book is about convincing the moderate believer to become a more extreme believer. If you're looking for rationalizations to support an existing belief, this book is for you. If you're looking for practical evidence to support belief, look elsewhere. This book glosses over the questions of skeptics.

    5 out of 5 stars Colloquial Apologetics.......2003-04-03

Sproul's accomplishes two things with this book. He manages to instruct Christians into the dilemmas of their faith while at the same time providing a way for them to be able to refute the objections skeptics pose to their religion. All of this is done in fairly colloquial language which augments the validity and credibility of the book: Christians have good answers for the tough questions and they are able to verbalize them clearly as well.

    Book Description

A Jewish person has different objections to Jesus than an atheist, yet most apologetics books are geared toward conversing with non-religious people about the gospel. Michael L. Brown, a Jewish believer in Jesus, has been writing popular books on talking with Jews about the Messiah for years. Now he takes those discussions even further with this newest volume of Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus. It focuses on the New Testament and traditional Jewish objections to Jesus, giving believers the important background information they need when discussing matters of faith with people who share many of their beliefs. This book is the perfect starting point for gentile and Jewish Christians who wish to speak intelligently with their Jewish friends or family.

V'Da Mah SheTashiv: Know What To Answer (To Missionaries) A Thorough Jewish response To Missionaries
I read the author useto be a drug taking fully irreligous Jewish youth, and then he suddenly came to religoun- of Christianity. It is indeed easier to meld with the large majority and not haveto keep all those many Jewish laws. But then again in Moslem lands its easier to be Moslem. For those truly seeking the Truth, volumes of volumes are way too much. It's really not that difficult.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written, detailed and accurate, but pointless.......2006-12-22

This is the fourth volume of a planned 5-volume set. (This review is basically the same as for the previous volumes.) Collectively, the set is a ground-breaking resource of first-rate scholarship. Unfortunately, the subject matter is incredibly arcane.

Dr. Brown is the leading expert on responding to objections to Jesus and Christian theology raised by knowledgeable Orthodox Jews. He has a doctorate in Semitic languages, the books are well-researched and well-written and he covers the material in detail, going into Talmudic interpretations, Rashi, Maimonedes, etc. Although such Jewish theologians are unfamiliar to most Christians, their names are as familiar to knowledgeable Jews as Moody and Scofield are to Christians.

Although most purchasers are gentile evangelists, material is arranged essentially as dialogues between an Orthodox Jew and a responding Messianic.

Unfortunately, the books are rather pointless. Why? See Evangelism Explosion. If a person is not open to the gospel, no amount of arguments will matter. You can see similar debates in Internet newsgroups between Protestants and Catholics, Protestants and Mormons, Messianics and non-messianic Jews, etc.

I took Brown's course on Messianic Apologetics in 2003. He started by having two Messianic Jews try evangelizing him and he responded as an Orthodox Jew would, with arguments from his books. One of the evangelists is an Israeli graduate of the Jewish Studies program at Christ for the Nations and a Messianic rabbi experienced at Jewish evangelism in Israel and the U.S.

Responding like a non-messianic Orthodox, Brown "wiped the floor" with both of them, with things like "Are you Jewish?" "Is your mother Jewish?" "Is HER mother Jewish?" "Do you keep kosher?" (Contrary to the Bible, the Israeli Supreme Court says a person only is Jewish if their mother is Jewish. Hence, if the mother's mother wasn't Jewish, the mother isn't Jewish, so he's not Jewish, etc.)

It then moved on to, "Numbers 23 says, 'God is not a man'. Since Jesus can't be God, all your so-called 'messianic prophecy proofs' are worthless. Also, they can't be proofs, since Messiah has not come yet. Where do Hebrew Scriptures say Messiah will be God? He will be anointed, but only a man. Where does Isaiah 53 talk about Messiah? It's not a messianic prophecy; it's talking about Israel."

One evangelist said, "Since the Temple is destroyed, sacrifices can't be offered. How do you get atonement for your sin?" The response was, "After Solomon's Temple was destroyed there were no sacrifices. How were Daniel's sins forgiven?"

For non-Christians reading this review, understand that Brown didn't "wipe the floor" with them because their arguments were wrong. They had never heard arguments from "anti-missionary" experts such as Tovia Singer and were not prepared to respond "off the cuff". Brown's books show that many Orthodox arguments contradict Scripture or historic Jewish interpretations or both.

For gentiles considering Jewish evangelism, an argument often raised by Orthodox Jews is, "If you could read Hebrew you would know that's not what it says." Brown studied Semitic languages because he kept getting that argument even though he's Jewish. He said materials written by Christians for Jewish evangelism routinely have Hebrew errors. Brown is also knowledgeable in biblical Greek and often debates "anti-missionaries" about both the Hebrew and Greek texts.

Sadly, despite claims to the contrary, what comes across in the 18-hour course and books is the attitude of "I am going to convince THAT person." An informal survey has indicated it is EXTREMELY rare for a Jewish person in the U.S. to accept Jesus unless the person (1) was raised secular or (2) marries a Christian. Such people are willing to listen to and honestly evaluate the beliefs of Christianity. Missiology studies show that 80% of people raised in a religion stay in that religion. Anyone who is Jewish, doesn't believe in Jesus and knows many of the arguments Brown is refuting has already made up their mind and this won't matter.

Jesus interacted with religious leaders who disputed him but he did not get into extended debates like those in Brown's books. Also see Matthew 10:14

Although Dr. Brown is VERY active in evangelism, I can't help thinking, "How many HUNDREDS of times MORE people could have been brought to Jesus if time spent researching and writing for a VERY small audience almost TOTALLY RESISTANT to the gospel had been spent reaching out to the MILLIONS of people who are simply indifferent and uninformed but are willing to listen if someone tells them?"

If you are a Christian considering Jewish evangelism, review the sample pages, examine the books if you get a chance and visit "anti-missionary" websites, e.g., Tovia Singer. You'll see this is EXTREMELY unproductive SUPER-specialized work requiring responses to arguments you won't hear ANYWHERE elsewhere.

But don't let that deter you from GENERAL Jewish evangelism. MANY Jews are quite secular. Their main arguments are "I'm Jewish. Jews don't believe in Jesus." and "What about all the persecution the Church has done against Jews?" They are open to the gospel if you hang in there and honestly address their concerns with sensitivity.

And if YOU think Jesus or the apostles CONVERTED from Judaism to Christianity, YOU need to learn about the history of the Church BEFORE 100 A.D. In Acts 15 the apostles created "Christianity" for GENTILES, as a religion PARALLEL to Messianic Judaism.

TELL your Jewish friends that JESUS IS JEWISH. He was born Jewish, he was Torah-observant, he died Jewish, came back from the dead Jewish and he's STILL Jewish.

Hebrews 4:14 ... WE HAVE A GREAT HIGH PRIEST who has gone through the heavens, JESUS ...

THE HIGH PRIEST ISN'T CATHOLIC AND HE ISN'T PROTESTANT--HE'S JEWISH!

5 out of 5 stars VITAL Apologetic points NOT TO BE MISSED.......2006-12-17

The stakes are certainly VERY high on this one.

I predict that Michael Brown's four volumes on ANSWERING JEWISH OJECTIONS TO [The Messiahship of] JESUS, will rank as one of the most important apologetic works of this or any century. (and let the fur-fly all you like, I'm convinced of it). Just look at some of the topics covered in this fourth volume in his extensive review of Jewish and Rabbinical objections:

5.3. Matthew 2:23 says that when Jesus moved to the town of Nazareth, this "fulfilled what was said through the prophets: `He will be called a Nazarene.'" There's only one problem. The prophets never said this! Matthew actually made it up.

5.4. Matthew 27:9-10 is totally confused. First Matthew quotes part of a prophecy from Zechariah, then he says it comes from Jeremiah, and then he takes the whole thing totally out of context. What a mess!

5.6. The New Testament is full of historical inaccuracies.

5.7. None of the important historical writers of the period--Roman or Jewish--make mention of Jesus. It's questionable whether he even existed.

5.8. Modern scholars are in complete agreement that the Gospels portray a mythical Jesus. There is very little that we can really know about his life.

5.9. Jesus was not born of a virgin. In fact, we have traditions that actually tell us who Jesus' real father was--and it wasn't Joseph! Anyway, the idea of a god being born to a virgin is just one of several pagan myths that made its way into the New Testament.

5.10. The genealogies of Jesus given by Matthew and Luke are hopelessly contradictory.

5.11. The Messiah is David's son. If Jesus were really born of a virgin, then Joseph was not his father and he is really not a descendant of David, even according to Matthew's genealogy. And if you claim that Luke's genealogy is that of Mary, Jesus still doesn't qualify, since the genealogy in Luke goes through David's son Nathan, whereas the Messianic promises must go through David's son Solomon. Therefore, Jesus cannot be the Messiah.

5.12. Jesus cannot be the Messiah because he is a descendant of King Jehoiachin. God cursed both this king and his offspring, saying that none of his descendants would ever sit on the throne of David.

5.13. Jesus did work some miracles, but they were not by God's power. We have traditions that tell us he learned magical arts in Egypt.

5.14. Jesus didn't fulfill any of the Messianic prophecies. We know that the New Covenant writers actually reconstructed the life of Jesus so as to harmonize it with certain predictions made by the prophets.

5.15. When Jesus failed to fulfill the prophecies, his followers invented the myth of his substitutionary death, his resurrection, and finally, his second coming, which, of course, they completely expected in his lifetime.

5.16. Do you want irrefutable proof that the authors of the New Testament didn't know what they were talking about? Well, look at Matthew 23:35, where Jesus states that the last martyr spoken of in the Hebrew Scriptures was Zechariah son of Berechiah. Actually, that was the name of the biblical prophet (see Zech. 1:1); the last martyr was Zechariah son of Jehoiada (see 2 Chron. 24:20-22). So, either Jesus, your alleged Messiah, didn't know his Bible, or else Matthew (or the final editor of his book) didn't know the Tanakh. Either way, this is a glaring error that cannot be ignored.

5.17. The New Testament is self-contradictory (especially the Gospels)!

5.18. Matthew claims that when Jesus died on the cross, "the tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people" (Matt. 27:52-53). This is obviously complete nonsense, without any hint of historical support. If such an incredible event ever took place--something like "the night of the living dead" in ancient Jerusalem--someone would have recorded it.

5.19. The teachings of Jesus are impossible, dangerous, and un-Jewish ("Hate your mother and father," "Let the dead bury their own dead," "Give to whoever asks you," etc.). There's no way he should be followed.

5.20. The New Covenant is anti-Semitic. It is filled with negative references to the Jewish people, and it blames them for the death of Jesus.
.22. Jesus was a false prophet. He claimed that his apostles would live to see his return, a prediction he missed by two thousand years. He also predicted that not one stone in Jerusalem would be left standing when the Romans destroyed it. Well, have you ever heard of the Wailing Wall?

5.23. Jesus was a cruel and undisciplined man. He violated the Torah by cursing--and hence, destroying--a perfectly good fig tree for not bearing figs even though the New Testament writers tell us that it was not the time for figs. So much for your wonderful Messiah! He even called a Gentile woman a dog when she approached him for help.

5.24. Actually, Jesus also taught that salvation came through obeying the Law. Just read Matthew 5:17-20; 7:21; 19:16-30; 25:31-46. This whole "gospel of grace" message is the invention of Paul and the other writers.

5.25. The teachings of the New Testament may have started out Jewish, but before long, they became totally pagan. This was done intentionally, since the Jews rejected Jesus as Messiah and only the pagans would listen to the message.

5.26. Jesus was really all right. He was a good Jew and a fine rabbi. It was Paul who messed everything up and founded Christianity.

    5.28. Jesus abolished the Law.

    5.29. Paul abolished the Law.

5.30. The Torah is forever, every jot and title, and only traditional Jews keep it. In fact, even the so-called new covenant of Jeremiah 31 says that God will put the Torah in our hearts. Therefore, since Jesus abolished the Torah, he cannot be the Messiah.

5.31. Anyone who changes the Law--no matter what signs or wonders he performs--is a false prophet. That applies to Jesus!

5.32. Observance of the Sabbath has been the hallmark of the Jewish people, separating us from other nations and identifying us with the covenant of God. Since Christianity changed the Sabbath, Christianity is obviously not for the Jewish people.

5.34. If the death of Jesus really inaugurated the new covenant spoken of by Jeremiah the prophet, then why hasn't it been fulfilled?

    - These are what you call, "THE MAJOR-LEAGUE QUESTIONS AND OBJECTIONS."
Dr.Brown answers them (often briefly, yet WITH DEPTH in addressing the problem or objection) by both logic, reason, and historical scholarship and documentation.

I highly recommend all four of these books to any serious student of Jewish and Christian relations and the very important reasons for the long-held objections and misunderstandings between both camps.

If you're a commissioned sales rep calling outbound biz to biz, this book is NOT for you. Nothing new or original here. I suggest you read books by Art Sobczak, Bly or one of the best books ever written on the subject. Telesales Tips From The Trenches by Joe Catal

5 out of 5 stars Gets beyond chit chat.......2002-04-08

It's obvious that the reader with "nothing new here" comment did not read the book, it doesent stress chit chat at all, read this book, apply it, and become respected in the art of selling, not in the art of telling.

There is no better tool for a sales coach than the Richardson series. I am not fond of Guru books in general, but I have used Richardson's books to coach sales teams, and gotten results. Salespeople at every level fail to integrate skills like checking into their presentations, but most think they do. Too much "telling" happens during presentations, e.g. most salespeople see an interruption by a client as rudeness rather than an opportunity, and respond accordingly. Richardson's tools help coaches manage even the most seasoned sales pros to their potentials. If you are looking for motivation, this series is not the ticket; the success stories focus on the sales process, not results. However, I have seen salespeople become better personal communicators after attending Richardson's seminars, while achieving better sales results; I do not think this was just a coincidence.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2000-12-27

For anyone selling high ticket items business to business, this book will get you get killed. It's obvious she must sell to consumers. You start out a call with the "how ya doing" routine, and you'll be classified as the typical bimbo headed telemarketer. Top executives don't waste time on chit chat nonsense. when I finished reading this book, I threw it away.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to sales and phone sales........2000-11-01

I first read this book when I entered the tele-sales field in 1995 and consider myself quite fortunate for it. Not only does the book address telephone sales, but it is really geared towards consultative sales. The treatment of sales content and phone techniques is very rudimentary, so it is definitely a lot more appropriate for entry level sales reps. I am sure this book contributed to my own success and I that is why I am recommending it be used as a training guide now that I am in sales management.

5 out of 5 stars Magesterial work which profoundly changed history.......2007-03-14

In the 17th century, the world underwent dramatic and incredible changes. The Scientific Revolution was gathering pace, Europeans had experienced the Reformation and the Renaissance, and boundaries and horizons in all areas were being expanded and changed at a breakneck pace.

Into this time of upheaval comes Descartes, one of the greatest Philosophers to ever live anywhere in the world. While 'modern' philosophy, which broke off its roots from Scholasticism, does not necessarily begin only with Descartes, it is true in Descartes the agenda of post-Scholastic philosophy is most clearly and beautifully expressed in logical terms.

Descartes's project is to take into account the implications of the scientific revolution for philosophy; for Descartes, it is no longer religious authority or pure philosophical speculation which tells us the most accurate truths about the cosmos, but science based on observation and the use of mathematical and logical methods employed by the aid of natural human reason.

Descartes sets into motion an astonishing project into motion; to basically remove Scholasticism and its corrupt and inept attempts to understand the universe and replace it with a complete and unified system of knowledge, based on certain truths clear and knowable to anyone, whatever their class or background.

Descartes, following a plan of 'meditation', withdraws from the senses and attempts to consider the universe as it is to the intellect. Descartes carefully invokes several skeptical doubts about our knowledge, the existence of the external world, and our own existence and attempts to set out what he felt was true and what is not. The famous phrase 'Cogito ergo sum' is one result, though Descartes's overall system and arguments are more complex.

Descartes argues that the cogito, along with the goodness of God who does not make a creature merely in order to decieve it, ensures there are certain and indutible truths about ourselves and the world which will ensure his project will be a successful one. But Descartes encourages the reader not merely to accept his arguments but to put them into practice themselves, hoping in doing so they will discover new truths about the universe which will be plain to anyone using the light of reason.

Descartes in his other works uses this method as a justification for his approach to science and mathematics. Descartes was in every sense a polymath; a trained lawyer, an excellent writer, a student of human anatomy (in which Descartes made many pioneering experiments and observations), a brilliant philosopher and (for his time) physicist, and a mathematician of genius. However, while much of his science is now plainly wrong and was superseded by better scientists such as Galileo and Newton, the agenda Descartes set for philosophy remains much the same even today, especially in the Analytic tradition. Philosophy owes to Descartes two great achievements, one, in applying more rigorous logical methods to philosophical problems while paying attention to the results of science, and second, the re-introduction of skepticism into philosophy which provides a valuable check against dogmatism, but which would only truely be extended to its fullest possible means by David Hume.

Whether or not one ultimately agrees with Descartes's arguments, it must be acknowledged he is a great geius who stands shoulder to shoulder with people like David Hume, Liebniz, Spinoza and Kant, who all radically changed the way philosophers look at the world and the problems it poses.

    4 out of 5 stars oh descartes.......2007-01-19

well..descartes is kind of long winded.
he's trying to prove we can KNOW things about the natural world, which he does. fantastic.
the problem now is by decartes standard can there be agnostic or atheist scientists?

4 out of 5 stars Translation is good........2005-09-26

I leave it to the reader to determine the merits of Descartes' thinking; that this work is seminal is obvious and needs no exegesis (nor does explanation of the text do any good for those who have yet to read it). The Cambridge edition is in my opinion the best out there for the English speaking world. It is a clean, literal rendering that does a great job of capturing the Latinate sense of Descartes' terminology in English with minimal obfuscation.

5 out of 5 stars Cogito Ergo Sum - The Matrix?.......2004-04-21

As a former student of philospohy amid the dreaming spires and an avid movie fan, my delight at seeing a modern rendition of a classic theory, instead of just seeing Shakespeare 'done teen' (10 things i hate about you...etc.) was clear to all.

The Matrix also did me a favour, because, to my mind, the key to unlocking philosophical concepts is always in the useful analogy or visualisation and here was a 2-hour visualisation with Keanu and special fx.

Anyway, Descartes' best-known piece is probably my favourite among the classic theories; accessible, easy to understand and easy to take a view on, as opposed to, say, Kant's theory of moral obligation...

All Descartes really does is walk you through a series of logical thought processes that he took himself through in order to clarify his views on God and existence. The classic sceptics, for example, believed that we could not know anything, whereas Descartes shows us his reasoning that God is all the proof we need.

For example, Descartes takes us through such questions as, how can i know the dream from the waking? how do i know that i am not a brain in a vat being manipulated by some devil? Since all philosophers seem to agree that logic is an acceptable proof, we then follow Descartes' attempts to reason his existence and he reasons 'Cogito Ergo Sum' (NOT Cotigo Ergo Sum as one of the other reviews suggests) or, 'I think therefore I am'. Go ahead and make up your own mind, it sounds ridiculous, but it becomes quite fun when you realise the difficulties in proving your own existence...! Enjoy.

By the way, this edition is fantastic and has all you need to lead you on to further reading, should you wish.

    Book Description

The Torah doesn't speak of Jesus at all! ''You're completely misinterpreting Isaiah!'' ''This verse has absolutely nothing to do with your Jesus! It's not even a messianic prophecy!'' ''As for the real messianic prophecies, Jesus fulfilled none of them.'' These are some objections raised by Jews regarding Jesus as the Messiah. Using the Hebrew Bible, rabbinic texts, and the New Testament, Dr. Michael Brown provides thorough answers to nearly forty such objections. This third installment of Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus looks specifically at questions raised about messianic prophecies in Isaiah, Daniel, Psalms, Haggai, and Zechariah. It's an invaluable resource for seekers and for anyone wanting to point students of the Torah to Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars WOW , WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW !.......2006-11-14

This is a great book for gentiles because it is such encouragement to our faith in Jesus who is the Messiah, the Prophet and the Priest in the order of Melchizedek. Thank you Michael Brown ! On the other hand, it is truly an encouragement and a great introduction to the Jewish people who are truly looking for their Messiah. Michael gently removes the veil of bias that has trapped Messiah's people for 1,000 years in darkness. For a time such as this, God gave his chosen people a man like Michael Brown, himself a Jew, to come against years of arguments and to let the light shine in and reveal the Glory of God.

4 out of 5 stars To be used as reference book only.......2005-02-04

Brown knows an astounding amount of information about rabbinic writings, the torah and ancient bible translations. The book is a gold mine of responses to common Jewish objections to Jesus.
The bad news is that you need to have the whole collection to see the responses to some questions (or else it will say, "see book 4, #500", etc.) or you have to dig for the answers to certain objections (such as the Nazarene objection and others).
Another unfortunate thing: his verbage. Although better than Tovia Singer's, he still sometimes speaks in terms that confuse the average layman.
Speaking of Singer, it seems that in every book Brown is grinding an axe against him. That and the lubavitchers. This might be okay if you know someone who's involved in the outreachjudaism organization, but not so good for other groups. And he misspelled the name of the "Jewsforjudaism" rabbi.
The dead sea scrolls' validity has been questioned, but Brown builds several cases based upon them assuming they are valid.
The references to Islam, ancient virgin cults and other fringe topics seem a tad unneccessary.
Also, it's quite easy to get lost in Brown's complicated footnote system. It would seem that he has the entire Library of Congress at his disposal.
But, to Brown's defense, he has left no stone unturned, and deemed no objection too silly. For most objections to Jesus, you can find what you're looking for just by looking at the table of contents. For the more obscure matters, one hopes that brown will produce a searchable CD-ROM providing access to such hidden information.

5 out of 5 stars If you are serious about Jewish objections to Jesus.......2005-02-01

This is a very important and scholarly work. No seeker of the truth on the issue of messianic prophecy would want to be without it. I look forward to a Jewish response(If one ever comes),perhaps as scholarly as this book or even better???

5 out of 5 stars Best so far in the series.......2004-12-25

I am a little disappointed that the author was not able to finish the series in the third book, but this one was definitly the best of the series! I started it at Togos, and wasn't able to put it down until I had finished it. It was just mind boggling how much evidence this fellow was bringing up to defend every fascit of objections that I have been hearing to Messianic Prophecies that I got from my cousin's Rabbi. But I must admit that now I am already growing anxious for the next book to come out...this is a really great series to invest in!

Fashion photographer Mario Testino takes pictures of what he sees--and what he sees most is models. His color-drenched fashion work is well known to readers of magazines like Vogue. He has a particular knack for catching famous posers off guard--Naomi Campbell looking over her shoulder as her exceedingly low-cut dress is zipped up her back(side); Carla Bruni, backstage at Dior, fully made-up and fully unclothed, shielding herself from Testino's spotlight. Madonna, perhaps his most famous celebrity muse, dancing offstage with her brother. All of these images are vibrant and compelling. But Testino's strength as a photographer is truly revealed when he puts his lens to less glossy images: a man's torso, crisscrossed with sheet marks; a stark black-and-white dual portrait of two young Muscovites; goldfish swarming in a plant-filled tank; a crowded, bronzed South American beach.

The hundreds of previously unpublished photographs that make up Any Objections? are reproduced on full pages of heavy, pearly paper, unfettered by captions (the photos are all easily referenced at the back of the book). If you don't think you'll be able to resist the urge to tear out the pages to hang them on the wall, you might consider buying an extra copy.

5 out of 5 stars No Objections Here.......2007-06-15

In fashion photographer Mario Testino's first published book of photographs (1999) he shows over and over that he has a wicked sense of humor, a priceless asset for anyone and certainly for a photographer. Who else would shot an aroused elephant ("Jumbo")? Or Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss seated facing each other on toilet seats? (One of these women is buck naked but you'll have to purchase the book to see which one.) There is also a series of four photos that are entitled "Roving Fingers." Check out what I call the mad-hatter carrying a sign that reads "Gays in the Millinery." There is lots of skin here since several of the photographs are of scantily clad folks at the beach in Rio de Janiero. Many of these images are far more erotic than the much posed models currently published in so many photography books. (I would put the photo entitled "Dreamer" in this category.) Many of the people are so real that you can almost smell them. the two-page foldout of a painter in Lima ("Exhibitionist") comes to mind. There is much cleavage, both fore and aft and just as many crotch shots as well.

A word about the layout: there are several pages that fold out with photographs that mirror each other. Although the pages are not numbered, the photographs are reproduced in smaller size in the back of the book, complete with titles and the places where they were shot: Rio de Janiero, Paris, Naples, Moscow, Miami, New York, Moscow, etc.

Almost everyone in this hooty volume appears to be having a good time. You will too if you pick up this book that several books published later imitate but do not surpass.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photography.......2007-03-14

O.K. so I'm not a photographer. I've no expertise to offer save as one who likes photographs. This having been said, this book is so much fun! I love it! What others may have justly criticized as poor lighting, poor composition, or poor exposure, has, for me, an entirely different effect--I'm left feeling as if I were present, drinking it all in, flowing with the chaotic, glamorous moment, of sometimes beautiful people in their not necessarily beautiful lives. The characteristics which others find a detraction make it, for me, a lived experience--which is not to say that the people become more likeable but they at least become more understandable.

    5 out of 5 stars A FUN BOOK.......2007-01-24

Even though he is one of my favorite photographor, I did hesitate to get this one , becasue all the reviews were not CLEARLY cool-but WHO CARES to get a photography book and it was not time to choose a life time guidelines or English dictionary to find out which one contains more words and clear to understand.

Turned out, it was such a good and fun photography book to joy the moment. From this "ANY OBJECTION?", more than Fashion and SEX, he has created as a whole new concept of PHAIDON'S own style. Sex is not a serious on here as he often makes in its own way. However, even tough his art pieces contained homosexuality, full nudity scenes, there are not any shocking sex/gay scene to look at. Things were processed his view way. I enjoyed to have them and to look at. Plus, it is collectable work. :-)

I saw this book in the Judaica section at Barnes & Noble, and glanced through before I put it back in the Christian Fiction section. I actually have the first book, and this one is built on the same techniques-Talmud, and rabbinic mysticism and speculation is used to produce "proofs" or real issues are cleverly sidestepped.

For example, he makes a point about how Christianity is claimed to be otherworldy (due to its gnostic and dualist tendencies), "anti-flesh" by talking about Christian hospitals and charity work, etc. But this is not Christian work--it is humanitarian work. It just takes cosmic bugaboos to scare Christians into treating other humans decently.

The use of Talmud and obscure rabbinic literature, etc., is the same approach that Christians tried in the renaissance. This literature is very interpretive and can be manipulated into almost any conclusion. Meanwhile, Christians have criticized such literature as spurious, slanderous, and ridiculous for centuries. In the same way, brown (in the first book) looks at pagan literature and scriptural passages where some of these pagan tendencies were absorbed by Israelites to defend the same type of paganism that created Christianity.

The other reviewer was correct. Only secularized Jews or mercenary Jews (ignorant of scripture or those who might convert for a mate) are likely to consider the ridiculous claims of Christianity.

If you are interested in the "Jewish Problem" spend your money to support the religious right's efforts toward the nazification of the United States. Why convert people through dialogue when you can legislate their choices in faith in a republican government, grow Christians through the "public" education system (with Christian fundamentalist school boards and duh coach history teacher), denying economic opportunities to us "Christ killers", and marginalizing non-Christians through every means available?

We hear about "messianic Jews" (Is that something like a Muslim Jew?) and are led to believe that Jews are apostacizing from God in droves. But there is a growing disillusionment among Christians, and people like Tovia Singer (and myself to a much much lesser degree) talk to Christians on a regular basis who are considering Judaism. They are usually lifelong church Christians who have gone beyond the emotional rants and have studied their faith and found it lacking concerning God, and that Christianity does not represent even Jesus' teachings. And Tovia Singer and others do not target or intend to provide an outreach to gentiles, nor do Jews spends millions of dollars to missionize gentiles like Christians do Jews---and still they come to us.

So if you are a Christian, this is a great book to convince you that the money you put in the offering plate and mr. brown's pocket to convert God's people into gentiles is not wasted.

Counter-missionaries (loyal Jews) read such books to refute missionary lies---but the people reading us are more often dissillusioned Christians than Jews. My current efforts have seen results among Latin Americans whose ancestors were force baptized, murdered in Christian auto da fes, and run out of Catholic Spain who are returning to God.

So mr. brown's book(s) are helpful. But Christians might do better reading them because most of them do not even know what their faith teaches or what they "believe." Many Christians do not believe in the trinity, original sin, nor do they understand these doctrines. We can refute every falsehood, but it helps to see them catalogued in order to systematically expose them---not for Jews, but for Christians leaving and considering leaving the "fold."

    5 out of 5 stars Essential!.......2004-12-23

This book is just plainly essential in my view to Jewish Evangelism. Remember we as Christians are to proclaim the good news to Jerusalem, and Judea, and to the ends of the earth...the first places are Jewish and we are commanded to share Jesus to the Jews FIRST and THEN to the Gentiles. This book is a great primer for carrying out the task commisioned to us as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach!

5 out of 5 stars Important book for Gentile Believers to Read as Well.......2004-12-07

I wanted to review this book from a slightly different angle. This book is about answering Jewish objections to Jesus, but in the process of doing this he explains a lot of concepts that are important irrespective of this debate. For examples, he goes into great detail about the trinity, Messiahship of Jesus, sonship of Jesus, etc. Topics that, quite frankly, very few people understand. This book is certainly the best presentation on these topics I have seen. So even if you don't know any Jewish people this is still a very worthwile book to read.

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource.......2004-10-08

Dr. Michael Brown's Answering Jewish Objections Trilogy needs to be on the bookshelf of every Messianic Jew, every Christian, every apologist and I highly recommend that even all non-believing Jews read this Trilogy, that they may see a comprehensive response to anti-missionaries, and Messianic beliefs accurately represented, that they may see who Yeshua (Jesus) truly is.
The extensive research, scholarship, and conversational style of writing in this book makes it perfect for the scholar to the lay-person.
The Answering Jewish Objections Trilogy is highly recommended!
