Would have like to have seen color photos instead of black and white drawings. Many how to books at gardening stores have the same or better information.

Modern Landscape Overview.......2007-01-07
This is a great book to see many of the better landscape projects around the world. Lots of new ideas, details and strategies for designers to look at. For the price (28$ for a hardcover and more than 500 pages!), a really nice resource. Good photo book for non-designers, too. A little redundant about some projects that are in other books of this sort, but for the most part has many new ones that I have not seen.
Ultimate Landscape Design.......2006-03-13
A concise pictorial essay of the state of Contemporary Landscape Architecture globaly. Fantastic images for each project. A short paragraph per project is provided, giving the reader a brief introduction to each project.
Beautiful book!

Customer Reviews:
Little use for the serious birder.......2007-05-07
I found this book to be of little use to anyone other than those just beginning to be interested in birding. Many of the chapters could be combined into simply a chapter entitled how to attract birds. Many are repeates. This book is also seriously lacking in usable pictures of many of the birds that it discusses.
Bird-by-Bird Gardening.......2006-12-07
I just started reading Sally's book, one of which I should have written myself, but am delighted in the way she has designed this topic. As a person with a forestry background, I have long advocated that the birds represent the plant community, however indirectly. That said, once one gets the needs of a particular species, which has been well brought about by the endangered species advocates, then a landowner can tailor approaches with managing property in order to attract those birds. Other wildlife is benefitted, too, but we do concentrate on birdlife. So, this a two pronged effort: pay attention to the plant associations, and then realize the wildlife management aspects resulting. Each of us can be an earth citizen, making a vital contribution on one's own land. I have a radio show and weekly newspaper column here in NH, "COUNTRY ECOLOGY" where I pursue these ecological profiles and whatever one can do to make things prosper. I formerly built over 11,000 bark-faced natural birdhouses during 14 years in that business, and was on the board of directors for NABS. I take care of two UNH natural areas on Squam Lake, where "On Golden Pond" was filmed years ago.

Indispensible.......1999-11-29
This book divides plants and shrubs into hieghts and seasons and then allows the reader to flip parts of the pages to mix and match by virtue of the pages being quartered. You can flip page sections to arrive at the perfect verticle combo, like those children's books that allow you to put an alligator head on top of a mouse body with duck's feet because the pages are divided. It's the easiest, most fun, comprehensive book on gardening I own - and I've got tons of 'em. This is a must own for anyone planning a garden, or who wants a quick plant reference with all of the most important information you need at your fingertips. each 1/4 page has the size, seasonality, care, good illustration, flash symbols, region, latin name, and brief review of the plant.
Book Description
Water has featured prominently in garden designs for thousands of years, and its appeal to the senses still attracts the imagination of gardeners worldwide. Ponds and other water features need careful planning, and though there are other books with wonderful ideas, many of them lack the very practical information that water gardeners need to know.
"The Master Book of the Water Garden" is the most comprehensive book on the subject. It includes detailed step-by-step illustrated instructions on all aspects of water garden construction and maintenance--from building a raised pond to propagating marginal plants. Philip Swindells also provides advice on choosing a style based on the reader's budget, time constraints, available site, and proposed function.
Customer Reviews:
ONE OF THE BEST.......2004-06-26
This book has all the information needed to build and maintain a pond. There is everything you need to know from A-Z including maintaince, plants, fish, etc. A must have.
Great coverage for building ponds and water gardens.......2001-07-19
This is an excellent book for building water gardens, ponds, pools and streams. The subject is covered thoroughly with detailed descriptions about installing fountains, lighting, islands, and landscaping. There are lots of lovely photos that will let your imagination grow as to the kinds of ponds you can design and build. You are only limited by the size of your yard. There is a large section about adding different types of water plants to specific areas of the pond. Plus, there is good coverage about adding fish, attracting wildlife, and performing seasonal maintenance. Construction techniques vary from simple to more complex designs, including waterfalls and ripple effects. Another book, Nash's The Complete Pond Builder, seems to have slightly better construction detail and also more examples of smaller ponds. However, Swindells' book is much more comprehensive and it contains a lot more information about maintenance, fish, and plants.
COMPLETE!.......2000-04-08
This Book has GREAT content. Not only does it have clear, and easy to understand diagrams of plants, but it supplied me with information to build my own pond. Now, my pond is filled with koi that rest underneath some waterlilies . The water hyacinths, (which I did not know about until reading this book) , smell soooo wonderful. My pond would never be complete without this book. I say you buy it, because it is worth it's price!

The Definitive Garden Book.......2000-07-04
This book's title says it all. Peter McHoy wrote the book (in fact, he has written numerous books) on gardening, but The Ultimate Garden Planner tops the list. Whether you want water features, a rock garden, a formal or an informal garden, or a wildlife-attracting haven, here is your one-stop, step-by-step planner.
Large color plates on every page illustrate a compendium of outdoor features. McHoy incorporates planting diagrams, cross-section views, and numbered instructions with plant identification.
The result gives novice and veteran gardeners alike hundreds of choices to adopt outright or adapt for your own particular terrain and needs.
Two green thumbs up!

Customer Reviews:
Stimulate Your Design Ideas.......2000-05-28
The Ultimate Garden Designer is one of the best books I've read on the subject. I've been gardening for about twenty years and have read and done much in landscape and garden design. If your looking for a book about concepts, not specific plants this is the best one I've come across. It will NOT make you into a garden designer if you don't already have a working knowledge of basic design concepts. [To further clarify it does not go into long discussions on UNIVERSAL principles of garden design, it does however give great design perspective insight into each specific plan and feature.] What it will do is stimulate your design ideas based on your potential applications of a given design theme.
The book has many colorful three dimensional renderings and two dimensional plans. They are categorized into complete gardens and garden features.
The complete gardens are based on theme's such as cottage, kitchen, family, plant enthusiast, disabled, water, Japanese, etc. Each plan has renderings and a plan, a short "design philosophy" discussion, a plant selection thought process, unique features identified, and design variations. The design variations are great for stimulating ideas on ways to adapt a given style of garden to different lot constraints (ie. long and narrow, corner, or triangle lot). The garden features section walks you through the styles, materials, and techniques for things such as water features, rock gardens, pergolas, walls, steps, herb gardens, etc. There are great color photo examples, different design sketches, and a discussion of design considerations.
The book also includes a plant directory of the most common plants in the included plans. Some will be familiar and some won't since this book was written in the U.K. But the plants list is not the main attraction here.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who is enthusiastic about designing their gardens as a whole and not just a mish-mash of disparate plants. A must for every serious garden library.
Very comprehensive.......1998-02-28
Having looked at many, many landscaping books, I can honestly say this one is among the best. The pictures are beautiful yet practical and feasible. Lots of practical suggestions help modify for your own yard.

The Ultimate Planting guide.......2003-01-27
The Ultimate Planting Guide. Noel Kingsbury Ward Lock. London 1996 ISBN 0-78063-7370-7
Where do you start when you want to select plants for your garden? Noel Kingsbury sets out to answer that question in this well-illustrated and comprehensive book.
Reading "The Ultimate Planting Guide" is rather like consulting with your own garden designer. You start with the question "What type of garden do I have?" and your answer "Shady", "dry", "Acid Soil" will lead you to a section on choosing plants for your own type of garden. The next question to answer is "What kind of garden do you want?" and the author discusses briefly the different styles of garden - classic, cottage etc. He moves on to selecting plants for the backbone and body of the garden. In his extensive section titled "A Plant for Every Place" he presents a series of five colour illustrations showing different approaches to a very plain, square front garden. These take you from ordinary through nice and very nice to stunning.
His major section on "Planting Principles" helps the reader understand how to combine plants and use them to best effect in different types of gardens and in various environments. There are very short chapters on "Aftercare" abd a brief bibliography.
This is a pleasant read with something for every gardener from novice on up. The material is well organized and the illustrations both attractive and relevant. This is good value for money and would make a great gift for a new gardener.
