Customer Reviews:
2006 International Residential Code/soft cover.......2007-09-18
This code book is like all such books very hard to get into, but it is a good reference. It lacks as good an index as I would like. The paper, printing and binding are good.
Good code book.......2007-08-13
like my title suggest this is a excellent code book for a residential project, personlly i am in the building trade so i have all the building code books The IRC + all three Voloums of UBC. It all depends on what part of the trade you are in I am in the remodeling part so actually i could probably get by with just the IRC Residential. the main thing to do is find out what code books your city building department is useing.
Like i said if all you can afford is one book then i would go for this book, an then later on as your business grows buy the rest.
This fits your needs if you want to build.......2007-05-17
Ever wonder how in the world you could learn all those building codes and all that crazy jargon your contractor throws at you. Well this will help you gain an understanding of some of the requirements necessary in the residential work.
content on target.......2007-03-19
this is a great book but i'd rather they organize there diagrams better and in a more direct way. grouping them up in a non cohesive way is counter intuitive. Blocks of pages are just diagrams then in the reading I have to go back and find the page with in that block of diagram pages. Its detailed but just not organized in a good way.
International Residential Code 2006 Review.......2006-07-08
The International Residential Code 2006 is basically a technical manual for builders yet is also our bible as far as codes are concerned. It is a great reference.

The world is divided into two types of people: those who wince when they see the words Canadian geese in print, and those who don't. If you are the former, or if you are the latter working for the former, the The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual provides invaluable assistance when you need to get your Canada geese all in a row. Countless newspapers and other publications base their style guides on this manual. The entries are arranged alphabetically and include issues of spelling, punctuation (there is no period in Dr Pepper), grammar, abbreviation, capitalization (Popsicle and Dumpster are, tollhouse cookies aren't), hyphenation (none, surprisingly, in ball point pen), and frequently misused words. There are also longer discussions of things such as Arabic names, chess notation, weather terms, and religious movements. Plus you'll find separate sections on sports writing, business writing, libel, and copyright.
Book Description
Fully revised and updated, the essential handbook for all writers, editors, students, and public relations specialists.
More people write for the Associated Press than for any newspaper in the world, and writers have bought more copies of The AP Stylebook than of any other journalism reference. With this essential guide in hand, any writer can learn to communicate with the clarity and professionalism for which the Associated Press is famous. Fully revised and updated, this edition contains over 5,000 A to Z entries--including more than 50 new ones--laying out the AP's rules on grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation, and word and numeral usage. Comprehensive and easy to use, The AP Stylebook provides the facts and references necessary to write accurately about the world today: correct names of countries and organizations, Internet language and search techniques, language to avoid, common trademarks, and the unique guidelines for business and sports reporting. The final word on media law, The AP Stylebook also includes an invaluable section dedicated to crucial advice on how writers can guard against libel and copyright infringement. The veritable "journalist's bible," this is the one reference that working writers cannot afford to be without.
With more than 50 new entries plus updates of more than 100 others, The AP Stylebook includes such features as:
* An A to Z listing of guides to capitalization, abbreviation, spelling, numerals, and usage
* Internet guidelines
* Sports guidelines and style
* Business guidelines and style
* A guide to punctuation
* Supreme Court decisions regarding libel law
* Summary of First Amendment rules
* The right of privacy
* Copyright guidelines
* Proofreaders' marks
Customer Reviews:
Wouldn't write without it.......2007-07-28
Also know as the AP style guide, this book should be every copywriter's and journalist's bookshelf. This is the definitive guide to punctuation, grammar and writing style for magazine and newspaper articles as well as most business writing. And it is vastly different from the style of writing most of us learned in school, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style. If you are thinking about writing for magazines or newspapers, or starting a copywriting business, you absolutely must get a copy of this.
Good Introduction to AP Style.......2007-07-07
I bought this book because I had a client that used the AP Style in their marketing communication and all outgoing documentation had to be reviewed using the AP Style. Being a technical writer, I had not used the AP Style before. Now I have a better understanding of why words are used the way they are in a newspaper. However, about 20% of the AP Style does not apply to technical writing.
AP Stylebook.......2007-05-29
A must have for all print designers. Great reference material for graphic and web designers.
Wanna be a reporter? Duh........2007-02-25
If you aspire to have any sort of career in print or online journalism, you should not need a review to tell you that you need this book. Duh.
However, I am going to give this book only four stars because AP needs to stop being losers and end the silliness of capitalizing the word "Internet" or writing "website" as "Web site." It's dumb.
Great Resource.......2007-01-16
This is a great book for anyone, from an aspiring writer to the accomplished journalist. The information within is very valuable and very well organized.

Customer Reviews:
Not a basic wiring guide.......2006-09-21
This is THE guide book for electricians and engineers. Almost 700 pages of useful information. The layout, tables, and ease of understanding have all improved over past editions. But this is not a basic wiring guide and it will only frustrate those without some electrical background. If you need to meet code - you need this book.

Pricey but essential.......2006-06-29
Revised, expanded, and essential to anyone in the building industry because these codes apply across the board, including virtually all states in the US. The IBC has replaced state and other building codes. This volume provides information in the English measuring system. I prefer the looseleaf edition to the bound volume because it folds completely open and you can leaf through the pages more easily, as you are constantly being referred from one section to another. Of course you will want to update your other international code books as well.

Ambient Findability: What We Find Changes Who We Become
ASIN: 0262134721 |
Book Description
Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design--guidelines for needing less and actually getting more.
Maeda--a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer--explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on.
Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products--how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."
Customer Reviews:
Simply disappointing.......2007-10-08
I want my money back. When I buy a book called THE LAWS OF SIMPLICITY, written by a university professor I expect more than this! John Maeda simply does not deliver.
The first two laws I could appreciate. Even though they are not new, they deserve a place. But from then on it's disappointing. "3: Savings in time feel like simplicity". Well, duh. "5: Simplicity and complexity need each other" Shameless!
And then there are statements that are simply wrong, e.g. "Simple objects are easier and less expensive to produce" (page 62). That's obviously not true in general.
I had hoped that this book contained some universal laws about simplicity, applicable to e.g. life in general and software applications in particular. No such luck.
I am grateful to the reviewer who recommended "Universal Principles of Design." That book was (and is) very helpful in my profession.
Sometimes you need to listen.......2007-08-24
In the spirit of the book: useful, makes objectives more right, simple book too. Pay attention, move on.
The simple and complete book about Simplicity!.......2007-08-24
Buy this book to be inspired from the Simplicity point of view. Not rated with 5 stars, add this one yourself!
Essential reading..........2007-08-15
I heard the author (John Maeda) on a radio interview and I was intrigued by the things he had to say... This book is an essential guide for anyone interested in reducing clutter in their life, business and home.
I can't recommend this book strongly enough.
Great idea but Maeda's style may not be what you're expecting........2007-08-03
I found the laws themselves to be thought provoking; my mind immediately engaged the task of relating the laws to my own work. While the laws themselves are a delicious reduction the text itself is just the opposite. With such a dogmatic title strapped to a compact book I expected Maeda to directly confront on the topic of simplicity in a brief yet concrete manner (similar to how William Strunk hits the target dead on with The Elements of Style). Instead Maeda only lightly probes "simplicity" with lots of personal anecdotes, abstract thoughts and the iPod (for most examples). The book is more of a meditation on the topic than a "law" book.
I highly recommend reviewing the laws at John Maeda's site: [...] and consider doing your own meditations. Read the book only if you're interested in viewing the cogs turning in the mind of Maeda without them producing the condensed sweetness you might expect in such a compact tome.
(The hardcover book itself is nicely designed, printed and bound for those of you interested in good quality book and a favorable price.)

Customer Reviews:
Makes me feel smarter!.......2003-12-01
I am desk jockey who does electrical design work. I have little in-the-field electrical experience. I use the NEC codes frequently to make sure what I design is code-compliant. I have a copy of the standard 1999 NEC book and found many parts of it difficult to interpret. This new "handbook" version has answered all of the questions and uncertainties I had about the code. It has an illustration and explanation for just about every question I could think of. Even when I don't need a certain thing, I have found myself leafing through the book just to learn more.
I would recommend this to anyone, but especially engineer types or those who are inexperienced. I feel much more confident about my job and I don't have to ask electricans those questions that make you feel stupid anymore. Even master electricians will appreciate the explanations of code changes from the 1999 version. Overall, I can't recommend this book more, well worth the $50 or so more than the standard NEC book.
Amazing........2003-01-29
If you hang around with fellow homeowners, there's a lot of water cooler conversation about various things, including the electrical code. This book just nails everything you ever wondered about, everything you haven't yet wondered about, and a few thousand things that you'll never need to know. Want to install a subpanel? Want to figure what gauge of cable to use to supply it? Want to know how to calculate the in^3 fill of a box? How deep to bury an underground cable? How to use raceways? That information totals about 1/4 of 1% of the contents of this book.

Customer Reviews:
What a joke..........2007-06-06
Interesting the similarities between the last Virginia Plumbing Code and the first International Plumbing code, eh? It's not coincidence.
It appears that the "International Code Council"... located in Virginia, no less... had a stroke of brilliance. They produced a gem of a name for their book- the "International" Plumbing Code. What? They using these codes in Mexico? Ecuador? France?
A good name sells anything. This book is a ridiculous reduction of plumbing codes, stuffed into a few pages. It's obvious very few contemporary issues are addressed. Unfortunately, bureaucrats aren't plumbers... which is why several states have adopted it as their new gospel on plumbing, and the International Code Council's dreams are becoming reailty. I've had multiple discussions with individuals "just so excited that someone finally took up the task to umbrella "all" the plumbing codes into one national code... so we can all be on the same page now... like the National Electrical Code!"
Absolutely hysterical
It is what it is........2007-04-07
The "code", in this case plumbing, is essentially an overpriced, legal document.
Most states have created their own version of plumbing code with many, major municipalities adding restrictions at local levels.
Whereas in a perfect world, "the" plumbing code would rigorously define a system of best practices - our United States, plumbing codes reflect insurance companies' interests in establishing a safe ( reasonably, low level of liability) datum.
The "code" is written by attorney's in cooperation with plumbers, builders, supplier's of materials and various, other, self interest groups.
It is vague, possesses no visual representations, poorly indexed, unreferenced and in many cases a hinderance to the adoption of new materials and design.
It is at best marginally practical.
However - because there is no popular movement to make the code "more accessible -" we are stuck with it.
It is what it is!
just good enought for name sake.......2007-03-19
with 148, the book didn't really go into detail into why some of the codes were wrote certain ways. I've read many other code book and they offer explanation into why its a certain way. This book doesn't make the code relatable so its going to feel cold to read, just bare details.
