One of the most feared crimes among urban dwellers, armed robbery poses a serious risk of injury or death, and presents daunting challenges for law enforcement. Yet little is known about the complex factors that motivate assailants who use a weapon to take property by force or threat of force.
Armed Robbers in Action is not like previous studies that focus on the often distorted accounts of incarcerated offenders. Richard T. Wright and Scott H. Decker conducted dangerous, life-threatening field research on the streets of St. Louis to obtain more forthright responses from robbers about their motives and methods. They also visited several crime scenes to examine how situational and spatial features of the setting contributed to the offense. Quoting extensively from their conversations with the offenders, the authors consider the circumstances underlying the decision to commit an armed robbery, explore how and why targets are chosen, and detail the various tactics used in a hold-up.
By analyzing the criminals' candid perspectives on their actions and their social environment, the authors provide a fuller understanding of armed robbery. They conclude with an insightful discussion of the implications of their findings for crime prevention policy.

Brilliant........2004-09-24
All I can say is... wow. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to currently be a student of Richard Wright's, studying Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. While this ethnography is extremely insightful and intriguing, it doesn't even begin to capture the sheer brilliance that IS Richard Wright. He is truly a one of a kind researcher, and many of his ideas have been groundbreaking in the field of Criminology -- especially since the studies for this book were done in the '80s, a much more conservative period as far as criminological research is concerned. This book would be interesting and even entertaining for anyone, but especially for those with a background in Criminology or Sociology. I would also recommend Richard Wright's other piece about this research project, BURGLARS ON THE JOB.

This is first rate ethnography that is well-written, insightful, and entertaining. Yes, I said entertaining, as in a good read. Fascinating book that will really make you think about what lies behind criminal decision-making . . . highly recommend it.

Laughed my ass off and then thought about it........1999-09-25
I spent three years being bored to points beyond death in law school, but this book was something all together different. The fact that it was written at all is impressive. You read about the inner city in the papers, but this book takes you there, and not just into the slum, but into the heads of the dregs of society. The logic expressed by the subjects of this book is so radically foreign to those of us in textbook America. Take a chance and look into the underclass. Oops, I used the class-word. I know we don't have those in this country, but this book may make you think. I only wish Pat Buchanan could meet some of these guys.

Well, Unless You Have Another Book in Mind..........2003-08-26
... You'll probably have to buy this one, regardless of your feelings about the shortcomings of this one. As a defense attorney practicing in federal court, I deal with conspriacy all the time. How nice it is then, to have a little portable book that is compact and durable enough to bring to counsel table at a motions hearing! I mean really, that's just a useful thing to have. Author is a former AUSA, not that that is a BAD thing, necessarily. My bottom line is that you really do need a good treatment of the relationship of the law of conspriacy to the law of evidence. Maybe I'm just taking a short cut here, but I think it's pretty handy.
The rest of the sections are all right. You could probably sum up the law of conspiracy in two words, but I'm fairly sure that Amazon won't print one of them...

A good study guide, but..............2005-09-10
I purchased this book for a friend as a graduation gift from the academy. It is very useful for study, especially with the CD. However, it not suited for field use as it is the size of a regular text book. I certainly recommend it however, purchasing an additional pocket guide for the street is a must.

I used this text with introductory Constitutional Law students. Most found it one of the best texts they have ever used. They were particularly pleased with the author's approach. Pohlman gives a good sense of the historical setting. The students found the briefs very helpful to their understanding of legal thinking. Most of the cases are well edited.

Lots of info, but spare me the victim's rights lectures.......2005-10-01
For a first semester course in criminal justice, this is a very comprehensive textbook. Lots of information, and you can learn a lot. I didn't use any of the on-line features, so can't say anything for them.
But in every chapter, once you get past the important subject matter, you get beat over the head, repeatedly, with a lecture about how everyone outside of the criminal justice system is oppressed. Hispanics are oppressed, women are oppressed, urban blacks are oppressed, EVERYONE is a poor sad victim of THE MAN. Statistical data to back up the claims are as shoddy as I've ever seen. Over and over I filled the margins of my text with comments on how these errors are used to blatently skew the arguments. This is so overbearing that our instructor wouldn't even discuss these pages during our lectures.
A consistant pattern is to present supporting opinions as being from "experts," (often unnamed), while opposing opinions are "controversial," despite that these positions are devisive across the country. You have to read carefully to recognize these biases, and not let them take root.
One early chapter spends pages discussing the inherent racism in the criminal justice system, only to imbed in a short paragraph that criminologists are by no means of one mind regarding its existence.
Then you have the partial statistics: "...nearly sixty times more Americans are arrested than are sent to prison each year." But no mention is made of the percentage of misdemeanors vs. felonies, or how many went to jail vs. prison.
Weak support for statistics abounds throughout this book.
If you can get past that and concentrate on the basic concepts, you can find plenty to learn. Just remember, as presented by these authors, the white man is bad, especially the white policeman. Diversity, understanding, lowering of standards, and a great big Kumbaya will heal us all.
