This book was very informative and eye opening. I recommend it for anyone with a teenager that wants to know what to look for on the internet.

Hey Folks,
Mrs.Good takes you through her experiences with the sexual predators that she enounters in her great work as a civilian UC helping the FBI put these folks where they belong...in a cage away from our kids! This book discusses the many facets of this section of law enforcement and even brings you into a trial and shows you the sleazy attempt by a defense lawyer to get the predator from having to do the time for his, or her, crime. This is a great book to companinion "To catch a Predator" by Chris Hasen. These two books are must reads for anyone interested in this subject. God Bless you all, Doneaux.

5 out of 5 stars I commend R. Stephanie Good for this book.......2007-05-21

I have read this book, and found it very interesting! Repetitive it was NOT. There are ALOT of sick pediphiles out there, and this lets them know we have their number! This woman works at getting them off the internet, and it doesn't take over night, it's alot of making sure she has who she thinks she has. I think R. Stephanie Good is a "PLUS" to life, if only more people were more like her this world would be a better place.

5 out of 5 stars Reality.......2007-05-15

The book exposes the real world we live in and the dangers it poses. The author does an excellent job of telling the stories and not getting into too much detail. We need more people willing to risk their own personal life to help others.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-04-04

Wow...This book really lets you right into the middle of these frighteningly perverted cases. The Dateline series only scratches the surface. Before reading this book, you can't even imagine the things these grown men will do and say to get what they want. Thank God for people like Stephanie Good and the FBI agents she worked with who protect our children from these horrors. Hopefully this book will raise the awareness of this problem and make parents more aware of the dangers their children face online.

In Donnie Brasco, FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone tells the story of working so deep undercover in the Mafia that the truth of his identity became blurry even for him. For six years, Pistone posed as jewel thief Donnie Brasco in order to pull off one of the most audacious sting operations ever. Because any small detail could blow his cover, Pistone adjusted his personality and habits to earn the trust of Mafia soldiers, connected guys, captains, and godfathers. He was so successful that many FBI surveillance teams assumed that he was yet another Mafia guy. This memoir paints a vivid portrait of the underworld of wise guys by revealing their code of honor, their treacherous dealings, their relationships with their wives and mistresses, and their lavish money habits. The suspense in Pistone's story builds as he unfurls his experience of life on the edge of good and evil and on the verge of death.

4 out of 5 stars Joe Pistone was one street-smart dude!.......2007-08-21

Gripping story of Joe Pistone posing undercover as Donnie Brasco for 6 years (!) to infiltrate the mob. As I read the story, I couldn't help but keep thinking how brave and street-smart this guy is. One slip and he's a dead man! Pistone thoroughly covered all his bases to maintain his fake identity. In the end, after the FBI agents announced to his mob ties that Donnie was actually an undercover agent all this time, they doubted it could be possible, and told the agents their was no way Donnnie was working undercover. That's how good this guy was!

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-01-07

I'd put money that you've already seen the movie. What you wanna know is if the book is any good/better/different, right? I'd say different. For example in the book "Donnie" is much older, perhaps over forty - his kids are in high school, whereas as I recall Jonny Depp's Donnie was late twenties/early thirties perhaps, with pre-school-ish kids....Maybe that's not a big deal. A bigger difference is much of the tension in the book comes from one of Donnie's early connections and sparring partners, Tony, who feuds with Lefty over "control" of Donnie - this is a very important strand in Donnie's rise in the Mafia, and as I recall wasn't in the movie at all. Bottom line is there is far more in the book than the bare bones story told in the film, and it's a well told tale. Forgettaboutit, just buy it....

5 out of 5 stars A Hero's Book.......2006-03-28

Agent Pistone is a hero. His willingness to go deep undercover for years to clean house on organized crime is amazing. I wouldn't have done it and salute his willingness to put this mission ahead of his own life.

Joe Pistone got and grew a unique assignment for the FBI. Starting with car theft rings, he was able to penetrate and become a made member of an organized crime family. As his association and the opportunity for deeper penetration grew, he had to live more and more of his life with the mob. This entailed no dinners at home, missed children's birthdays, weeks without seeing his family and the stress of always being in character for long, long periods of time.

Through this book, the reader gets a day-to-day view of the mob. Often bored as only guys with too much time on their hands and nothing to talk about except cars and girls can be, his existence is enlivened by the sudden forays to steal and kill (he was able to avoid involvement in any murders, helped save many and avoided direct involvement in theft). Playing on the greed of Mafioso and the seeming ability of Donnie to connect them with money making scams in Florida, the mob lets Donnie in and eventually become an insider. Along the way, the reader gets to see mob guys at work, at play (particularly eating and spending money until they were broke), scheming against other made family members, and living the life with all the swagger and pride having "made" the mob gives these hoods.

Pistone was incredibly successful. His wires and testimony lead to the arrest, conviction and deaths (through mob killing of some of those who had vouched him up the organization) of many mobsters. This is a fascinating story.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2006-02-26

This was an amazing book. It provided a great look into the life of one of the greatest FBI agents to ever live. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in the field of federal law enforcement or if they just want to enjoy a suspense-filled book.

Book Description

Selected for the 2007 Amelia Bloomer Project list of recommended feminist literature for young readers
For thirty years, Lucinda Delaney Schroeder held an unusual government position: she was one of the handful of women special agents with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In August 1992, she accepted an assignment that forever changed--and endangered--her life. She posed as a big-game hunter in Alaska in order to infiltrate an international ring of poachers out to kill the biggest and best of that state's wildlife.
A Hunt for Justice recounts her dramatic story--a story she was not legally permitted to write about until her retirement in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars You Go, Girl!.......2007-08-30

In 1974, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hired its third female agent, Lucinda Delaney. And unlike the first two women in the agency, she was determined to do more than checking cargo and baggage for smuggled contraband.
And thus began a career in which Delaney, who married biologist Lonnie Schroeder soon after, spent 30 years working undercover, bagging poachers and other hunting scofflaws.
Her fascinating story has been recounted in "A Hunt for Justice."
Schroeder tells of her struggles to be taken seriously in an agency that gives "old boy's network" a really bad name. A degree in criminology and an overwhelming passion for solving mysteries led Schroeder to her chosen career, and a dogged determination--some might say stubbornness--kept her in it for 30 years, despite outright and undisguised sexual discrimination and harassment, administrative roadblocks and hostility.
Today's generation doesn't remember the struggles involved for women in the 1960s and '70 to be taken seriously in formerly "male" occupations. Employers could--and did--discriminate on the basis of sex, motherhood and pure bias; those women who persisted were subjected to verbal and physical harassment. It is a testament to Schroeder's passion and determination to do her job that she not only did it, but was instrumental in bringing down an international poaching ring operating in Alaska.
And this case is the crux of the story. Her struggles in the beginning, building a family and juggling being a wife, mother and field agent are just background for the real story, the undercover "Operation Brooks Range" in 1991.
Poachers at this time could make serious money taking hunters into Alaska for "guaranteed" trophies: moose hunts began at $6,000, sheep and grizzlies cost hunters $7,000; combination hunts were as high as $18,000.
As Schroeder begins her undercover operation, at a hunter's bar called "The Bear Den, she finds out why the costs are so high: " `Wow! Pretty hefty prices,' I said, sliding the brochure and videotape into my oversized black leather purse. `Not when you consider that everything's guaranteed,' (the bartender) replied."
One of the biggest violators was a guide named "Bob Bowman" (Schroeder changed the names to protect privacy). He had "all the elements of a violator--small airplanes, wealthy clients and lots of big game ..."
But with 64,000 licensed guides in 591,000 square miles of wilderness, catching him was almost impossible.
Until Schroeder and an informant wangled their way into a hunt with Bowman by pretending to be hunters in search of big trophies who weren't willing to take the time and hardship to hunt legally.
Operating by word-of-mouth, with clients coming in from Italy, Germany and other foreign countries, staying under the radar and having an almost supernatural ability to sniff out undercover operatives (and allegedly no compunction about "eliminating" them), Bowman's operation had been going on for years, even thought the agency knew he was dirty.
Illegal hunts included using small planes to tire out grizzlies and moose, spotting game and dropping the hunters right on top of them, despite a law forbidding flying and hunting on the same day, and conducting hunts in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Schroeder spent 11 heart-pounding days in Bowman's camp, worried that violators she'd arrested would recognize her, worried her informant might slip and give up their secret, worried the illegal hunters would leave the country with their evidence--and trying to convince herself that the time away from her daughter and husband was worth the stress and fear.
This woman has guts--and smarts. She got on Bowman's good side by translating for his Italian guests, got in with them by speaking their language, worked up a relationship with the wives of the poachers by helping in the kitchen and seeming compassionate, kept the foreign hunters' evidence in the country with a well-told lie, and brought home a terrific piece of evidence in the form of a Dall sheep trophy she shot in ANWR.
Here, Schroeder's overriding reason for taking the risk is seen:
"I hated to kill a magnificent ram like this one for a case, and I wondered for a minute if I was any better than the crooks who killed animals for their own selfish agendas."
Schroeder's agenda should in no way be seen as anti-hunting. As she points out in the Preface, "... I championed ethical and legal hunting. Nothing in this book should be construed as being anti-hunting. My job was to stop illegal hunting and poaching that diminished legal hunting opportunities. I fully acknowledge and respect the tremendous contribution that hunters have made to wildlife conservation worldwide."
This book reads like a thriller, with international intrigue, heart-stopping action and a gutsy heroine who's not afraid to face her adversaries head on--even in a foreign country--in order to make her case.
Schroeder writes well, infusing her prose with imagery and action, making her characters three-dimensional, even the bad guys. She doesn't hesitate to tell of the lengths she'd go to, nor does she gloss over her fears and concerns about her family and her work's effect on them. But her passion for solving crimes and putting criminals away is obvious, and her book makes for a compelling read. I sometimes forgot I was reading a true story, it was so well done.
True crime is a genre one either loves or hates, and I happen to love it. "A Hunt For Justice" goes right up at the top of the list of well-written good reads. If you're not a fan of this genre, read it for the history, for the excellent picture of the struggles women have gone through to be considered equal, or for the damage illegal hunting and poaching does to the wildlife populating.
Whatever your reason, just read the book. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-06-20

As a female looking for a career in wildlife law enforcement this was a great book to read! Lucinda Schroeder did an excelent job writing this true story, it was hard for me to put it down at night. Because Lucinda is a female she had a great advantage over men at catching poatchers in Alaska, and this reminds us all that you don't have to be male to succeed in this line of work. The book was full of excitment, danger, humor and fun. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-08

This is a GREAT BOOK....there are very few books written by undercover agents that rings so true. This woman had guts....

1 out of 5 stars Shady .......2007-04-01

Do wildlife officers ordinarily hire undercover informants that drink themselves into a stupor day after day in the field? Looks like from the book his early demise from "organ failure" was from drinking himself to death. No wonder he couldn't tell whether he was in one river drainage or another.

Pretty shady. The last poster is right that she does not know north from south, which is odd since they are never actually very far off the haul road and could see the oil pipeline and the road easily. In fact, Happy Valley is actually on the road itself wheras the book tries to make it sound like it is way off somewhere. The Sag runs parallel right next to the road, and the Ivishak flows right into the Sag.

A good book if you live in the city five thousand miles away and don't know up from down.

1 out of 5 stars Author busted by an Alaskan who's actually been there..........2007-03-28

I've spent more than a decade in this area as a pilot and wilderness guide and have to blow the whistle here.

Despite how enraging it is for outside hunters coming here taking our fish and game illegally, it is equally appalling to see the criminality and incompetence in our federal officials

My hopes for professionalism were dispelled by numerous errors of astonishing degree. The officer, claiming to have studied maps and impressing us with "memorizing" geographical details before going - makes multiple statements demonstrating she does not even know the Brooks Range lies south of, not north of most landmarks identified in the book (e.g. Happy Valley air strip, etc.).

This basic confusion of not even knowing north from south is confirmed elsewhere. For example, fog regularly rolls in from the Beaufort Sea (in the north), not from the south as claimed in the book. But you'd only know that if you had experience here.

The author makes numerous errors throughout such as misnaming tussocks as "pingos" - confusing a 12-inch diameter grassy tuft with mounds of earth covered ice that can be more than a mile in diameter and more than a hundred feet high. People living in cities thousands of miles away can be "snowed" by a poseur like this, but anyone who actually has some experience with the geography and fauna can see this is a shocking degree of ignorance. Like confusing an elephant with a cockroach.

We are led to believe that on the one hand this operation was internationally famous for using airplanes to herd wild animals into the guns of poachers, decimating huge numbers of animals - and yet the investigator needs to commit crimes herself instead of following simple legal protocols in busting the operation - and keep her own crimes secret from the district attorney and supervisors until she has retired and the statute of limitations has expired.

The author justifies lying to the operators (understandable) - but also to her supervisors, to international officials, and to the district attorney. The hypocrisy of the whole campaign is perhaps best summed up on p 265 where she chirps to her supervisor about how she "won't be telling for a long time" how she illegally coerced statements out of foreign clients. Had that been known at the time of the trial then the evidence would not only have been dismissed, but possibly all the charges dropped due to flagrant misconduct.

This officer holds out the sacred "justice to animals" as the rationale for committing crimes herself. What gall to express how her faith in God and her departmental awards (based on her own concealed criminal conduct) justify whatever she does.

If law enforcement officials lie to everyone around them, including supervisors and the U.S. attorneys prosecuting cases, and if they commit crimes themselves - then how much faith are we to place in law enforcement? Remove the sacred "defense of animals" excuse and supplant it with the basic greed for profit in book sales, in personal promotion, in the rapture of exercising raw power over people - and you see what is wrong with the author.

Because she is an admitted criminal, and because she is so appallingly ignorant of basic geography and natural phenomenon for which she poses as an expert - I simply cannot trust the veracity of much this person says. It makes me wonder what lengths this person has gone to in order to obtain convictions of people in pursuit of her own advancement.

Too bad because there are indeed poachers and if the crimes alleged in this book were true, it was completely unnecessary for the author to commit crimes in prosecuting them. There was nothing necessary beyond simply contracting for and then participating in illegal hunts.

Lastly, the pretentiousness of all the melodramatic terms - eg a "harrowing" day of being flown around in the back seat of a plane and eating "hot turkey, gravy, buttered rolls, peach cobbler" - and the "camp hell" with heated wall tents, cots, personal servants and so forth... It was quite off-putting to those of us who have actually spent time in the same place alone and with whatever we carried on our persons to survive for weeks at a time.

You cannot paint everyone else in this camp as a pampered, out of shape slob and the author - receiving the same service - as wonder woman. The b.s. meter, especially in light of all the lying and criminal conduct on the part of the author, is registering "full on". Trying to imbue an interview with a restaurant owner about same-day airborne hunting violations as if it were a back-alley Russian Mafia gangland encounter while also enjoying five course meals at taxpayer expense is ludicrous.

Almost no readers have been to ANWR, so maybe the author can get away with lying and incompetence. Readers won't question federal officials who couldn't mount a snowmobile expedition to the Ivishak camp. But a snowmachine ride at 40 below is nothing to a regular Joe Alaskan.

What bunglers. Should have asked one of the work crews at Prudhoe Bay or Pump Station Two to run out there in place of those weanies. Those workers are outside every day in that stuff, and so am I. We don't give up whimpering like little school girls.

There's more I could go into but the upshot is you have a federal agent who has had to wait until retirement and expiration of statute of limitations to confess to criminal conduct, and who demonstrates extreme lack of competence in basic field skills in her alleged area of expertise while feigning a "toughness" that isn't credible.

Animal justice deserves better than this.

Book Description

Seldom has the netherworld of the mafia been revealed with such fascinating detail and sheer suspense. Like the classics of the genre-from The Godfather to The French Connection to Wise Guy-Takedown leads us to the inner ring of a conspiracy of corruption and terror that held the city in its grip for nearly fifty years.

Rick Cowan was a young NYPD detective in 1992 when he dropped by a Brooklyn waterfront warehouse to investigate a recent fire bombing-only one in a string of interviews he considered routine. But what he found there was far from routine, for it would take him on a five-year odyssey and nearly cost him his life. In fact, he had stumbled upon the lead of a lifetime-the suspicion that he might unearth the hard evidence police and federal agencies alike had been chasing for decades: the proof of collusion among the mob families to extort billions from the nation's most influential corporations that call New York their home.

Featuring eccentric, larger-than-life New York characters and an undercover cop on the brink of being discovered-and murdered-at every step, Takedown is a riveting real-life procedural and one of the most important investigative books of the season.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but a tough read.......2007-08-18

I'm of two minds on this book. The history of the mob's control of the trash and paper recycling industries in and around NYC are fascinating. But a great deal of the book consists of verbatim transcripts from wires worn by Cowan in his interminable dealings with the mob, many of which are repetitive. Only for the real lovers of mob stories.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2004-07-25

Over the course of the past few years, my love of reading books about the mafia went dormant. When I arrived upon a copy of "Takedown" in a used book store, my interest was revitalized. The story in "Takedown" is unbelievable not because it is untrue, but because it is unbelievable how many times Rick Cowan avoided certain death. Though it is unbelievable at times, it is a true story.

By chance, Rick Cowan was in the right palce at the right time. This young detective made the mafia believe he was a cousin in a garbage hauling family. Through this false pretense, he was able to infiltrate the Gambino Fanily to its highest level. Such a task was thought to be out of reach to the NYPD. The stories Cowan tells of his interactions with the mafia have a level of authenticity to them. You can almost hear the stereotypical accents being spoken as you read. I question whether some of the stories were exaggerated to make the book a more exciting read. Surely any man faced with some of these circumstances would crack or slip.

Cowan even discusses the strain three years uncover put on his family. This is an aspect of the investigation that receives little attention in similar books. I also enjoyed the epilogue in which Cowan discusses whether he felt remorse for "ratting out" the friends he made in three years.

Reading a book about the real life mafia is much more exciting than any movie or TV show available. While there certainly must be some fabrications present in the book, none were so glaring to take away from the story. I would recommend this book to any person with an interest organized crime.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-03-02

Cowan's book is a riveting account of an undercover NYPD's officer infiltration of one of New York's most powerful Mafia families.

Much like a similiar work "Donnie Brasco", Cowan keeps the reader in perpetual suspense as the detective narrowly escapes detection from the Mob and exposure from his own colleagues.

He also provides a detailed and penetrating view of the Byzantine mechanics and day to day grind of the mob controlled "garbage business"

This book is one of the most successful at describing what life is actually like for low and mid level mafiasio.

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down.......2003-10-30

Here is a book that has all of the dramatic tension of the Godfather or the Sopranos with the added distinction that it's all true. Detective Cowan bravely infiltrates the inner chambers of NYC's garbage cartel and the colorful yet dangerous characters that he deals with are right out of central casting. The story unfolds quickly as he is accepted into this circle. At one point when his cover is almost blown by a distant relative who is not in on the operation the tension is palpable as Cowan deftly avoids detection.
I found this story absolutely fascinating and the writing captures the conversations in a way that puts you right there at the table with these guys. Frankly this is a movie waiting to happen.
It amazes me that someone would make such a personal sacrifice and take the risk necessary to do this type of undercover work but at the same time Cowan's tale makes you understand to some degree how a detective can get caught up in such an assignment.
This is a fabulous read.

5 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best mob books.......2003-10-25

It just goes to show that even though Rico took it's toll on the mob heirchy in the 80's certain rackets such as the garbage cartel have only been taken down in the last few years. Most of it happend by luck one day when a police officer happend to be on the scene when the cartel threatens Bendetto's. In steps the role of the undercover cop as one of the Bendetto's cousin's. A guy who isn't all against going into the cartel to save the business. He ends up meeting many powerful gangsters Including Allie Shades Malangone(Genovese) and Joey Francolino(Gambino). The undercover cop hassles with other trash hauling competitors and gains the trust of Francolino and some others. The case ended up resulting in the takedown of the cartel for the most part for all we know. It helped lower the cost of trash hauling in NYC, but still the other companies that came in afterward were no saints like BFI who got hit with the same practices the mob used but they just didn't whack anyone for all we know. Highly recomended reading.

4 out of 5 stars True Story of Bikers, Drugs, Sheriff's and Women That Reads Like Fiction.......2006-09-22

A unique trip into the anatomy of the toughest of the bikers combined with an exciting, real life drama of undercover work on the edge of disaster.

Through his connections in both law enforcment and the biker culture, Detroit has captured a true story that reads like fiction. Mix together one compromised biker willing to trade his fellow bikers for a get out of jail free card, a beautiful undercover deputy sheriff willing to ride with the bikers and law enforcement constrained by the rules of the game and you have one hell of a story.

The writing style has the tight feel of a screenplay where more emotional content will be added on the sound stage. The absense of emotion does however add to both the reality and the stark terror of a very dangerous undercover operation running on the edge of disaster.

The result of the operation was spectacular with dozens of felony arrests and numerous convictions.

Highly recommended.

It is sad that for whatever reason, perhaps the desire of some involved to continue living, that this story has not made it to the screen.

4 out of 5 stars A look into the 1970's southern calif. Hells Angels 4 1/2 stars.......2006-03-05

Wayne Carlander a Sargent for Orange county division of narcoatics is teamed up with a new partner one Victoria Seele he is not to pleased to have a new partner and that being a woman to boot. But he has a plan they dectectives have been wanting inflitrate the bikers to gather information and Carlander has his chance when he gets Cliff Mowery to turn to be a informant or rat in exchange for early parole and teams him up with investigator seele and go undercover.

Seems like unlikely team victoria is the picture perfect all-american girl you know the perfect cheerleader and cliff a biker with a hatred of cops well known in the biker community and buffed out bad boy the one that all the women secretly fantaisize about.

This follows them in the mid to late 70's as they go undercover and infiltrate the hells angels. But unkown to mrs seele that this will have lasting effects and will change her in ways she could never know in the beginning.

I gave this book 4 1/2 stars even though it was a pretty good book because the author and the author explains this in the forward that he has put in dialogue to keep the interest of the reader and you have to notice this in sections of the book because you know there is no way even through interveiws that he could these accounts so it makes you go How Does he figure that or know and this in turn makes you wonder how much is made up dialogue. But this is a good book so give it a read

5 out of 5 stars One of the most fascinating books I've ever read.......1999-09-02

It feels pointless to write about a book that is out of print. However, this book made me wish for more by the same (pseudonymous) author. I became very interested in the Hell's Angels, and thought a lot about the man who acted as an informant. In my experience, this was a book that really stays with you.

Informants and Undercover Investigations is a comprehensive work on a subject that has traditionally been shrouded in secrecy. Based on recognized practices and case law, this book examines frequently encountered informant issues and provides guidance on how to successfully operate an informant. It identifies informants as one of the most unstable components of the criminal justice system but emphasizes the value of a closely controlled informant in a criminal investigation. With case studies and appendices, this text also examines the US Marshal's Witness Security Program and reviews current local, state, and federal cases for best practice protocols.

4 out of 5 stars Our Insatiable Appetite For Mafia Books.......2003-04-21

Over the past several years there has been an immense body of literature, fiction as well as non-fiction, devoted to the topic of the Mafia. In fact, colleges are even offering courses analysing Mafia Literature.

It seems we have an insatiable appetite when it comes to reading about these wise guys.

The newest book to be unleashed is D. Lea Jacobs first work of non-fiction, Friend Of The Family. According to the inside flap of the book, Jacobs is an established author of historical fiction, writing under a different name. In view of Jacobs' previous writing experiences, it is not surprising that the book reads like an adventure novel rather than a non-fiction tale.

The crux of the story centres around two of the most famous successful undercover criminal operations in the annals of the FBI, the Coldwater and Pizza II operations. The main protagonist is the FBI's first and probably one of the best undercover agents to work against the Mafia, Ed Robb, known as Tony Rossi to the Mob.

It was Ed Robb who in fact pioneered the tactics, techniques, and procedures that continue to guide today's FBI covert operations.

At times reading the multitude of facts, stories and players, seemed like I was watching a spider weaving its web and eventually capturing its prey.

Although, I must admit, it was very often difficult to keep track of all of the names tossed around. However, thankfully, to rectify this problem, an appendix at the back of the book lists the cast of characters. It also indicates to which Mafia family each of the bad guys owed allegiance and who were the good guys.

Apart from describing and analysing the various sting operations of the FBI, the book also explores the conflicts faced by the main protagonist.

The mental stability of Ed Robb played an extremely important role in the overall undercover operation.
As mentioned in the book, " a deep undercover penetration could change forever the mental makeup of the participant. Like the death of a loved one, a wrenching divorce, or any other extremely stressful emotional trauma, they are never forgotten and the effects are permanent."

There is no doubt that the facts and insights Jacobs presents are by and large absorbing, and often unexpected. We are reminded that behind the tough guy mask of these criminals are often paranoid personalities who can concoct infantile schemes leading to their downfall.
One moment they may be gentle, funny or sad, and in the next moment they believe they are invincible and that nothing can harm them.
